Jared Loughner alleged to be shooter, sources say

Federal law enforcement officials identified the gunman who shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) and killed six others at a political event in Tucson Saturday as Jared Loughner, who appears to have left a trail of Internet postings, including some that express convoluted observations about government.

Loughner was taken into custody at the scene.

Giffords, who in November narrowly won reelection to a third term, was hosting her first "Congress on Your Corner" event when the gunman ran up and began shooting her and others in her entourage with a Glock handgun, according to law enforcement sources. Authorities suspect the gunman had multiple ammunition clips, sources say.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation.

Terrible. Truly a shame.
Please explain how this young man was able to obtain a Glock handgun with a multi-round clip? What a shame.

It's a wake up call people! Let our debates and discussions be civil!

This violence definitely is the result of the intense political rhetoric. The vitriol fomented by Beck, Palin and their ilk are persuasive to weak minded individuals such as Jared Loughner.

This was a politically motivated attack. Yes, the guy was crazy. But who put Gabrielle Gifford in the crosshairs, who said it's time to reload. Why are Progressives under attack?

This is a direct result of such blatant prodding.

I can't think of a time that this has been worse since the McCarthy era.

Regardless of the political leanings of Loughner, who is probably psychotic, virtually all of the commentators that incited him were of the right wing - the Palins, Paladinos, Cantors, Mitchells, Limbaughs, O'Reilly's, Bachmanns, Becks, Robertsons, Grahams etc etc. It goes on and on and on. There is nothing comparable to this amount of irresponsible and reckless inciting of violence on the left.

Maybe the man is just crazy. It doesn't always take some conspiracy to go around shooting people. Ultimately there is no one to blame but Jared Loughner.

I am laughing at you, and neither of us know the facts.

And yes, I like the 2nd amendment of that darn constitution.

Let's move on and pray for Mrs. Giffords and her family and everyone else who was hurt or killed by this lunatic.

Posted by: 912anita | January 9, 2011 2:49 AM | Report abuse

lupur,

Mein Kampf is definitely left-leaning. It's statism (worship of the state) mixed with nationalism. Loughner also listed next to Mein Kampf the Communist Manifesto, which everyone will agree is leftist (international statism). Just working from Loughner's reading list, though, doesn't give us much because he's got decidedly leftist literature mixed with decidedly rightist literature (like Ayn Rand), all of which just gives us a confusing hodgepodge of nothing.

When that guy flew his plane into the IRS building, people assumed he'd be a right-wing nut, but he wasn't. He proved to be an Obama supporter. So why fly a plane into the IRS? Because he hated the government. Plenty of leftists do, for varying reasons. Look at a lot of the far-left rhetoric in this country that talks about how the government is sold out to the corporations, and how we need to overthrow the corporate government establishment. That's all left-wing.

And what about the anti-government protests of the '60s. You can't honestly claim that these protests were coming from the right, can you? Plenty of anti-government rhetoric comes from the left.

The left, too, has a history of violence. This isn't to say that the right doesn't, but let's not be ignorant. Leftists have shot plenty of people and bombed many others in this country. I mean, the last president to take a bullet was Reagan, and it wasn't some NRA, pro-gun nut shooting at him.

A left-leaning person shooting a Democrat is not beyond the realm of reason, too. Giffords had just voted against Pelosi, from what I understand, which upset some people. Loughner had also apparently met and interacted with her at some point before, according to someone who knows him, and he regarded her as an idiot. For a guy who was confused and probably didn't have very sophisticated or deep political convictions (thus mixing Mein Kampf and the Communist Manifesto with their political antithesis in Ayn Rand in a reading list), any politician whom he didn't respect probably would have sufficed. Some people just want to cause the world to burn down around them. This may have been one such guy.

My main point though, is that people like you need to lay off the politics. Even before people knew who the shooter was, they were jumping into these comment forums and onto blogs and whatnot, blaming Palin and the Tea Party, etc. It just didn't pan out, I'm sorry to say. Loughner's acquaintances have characterized his politics as left-leaning, and, really, politics seem to be secondary at best as a motivation in this killing. Mostly, it's just that the guy was messed up in the head, and neither right-wing nor left-wing rhetoric can be to blame for this.

Mein kampf is left leaning? Attacking a DEMOCRAT is left leaning? Owning a gun is left leaning? Ranting about big governemtn takeovers is left wing? Typical tea party tactics. Distort facts until they fit into your own delusions and you are never wrong,

You know as well as I do why Gifford was attacked, she was a popular democrat in an conservative state, and the motivation given the guy's youtube rantings about government make it clear that the target was premeditated, I think it just PATHETIC how every tea partyer and his dog is trying to shift blame over something that is clearly a result of their own radicalism. To quote shakespeare "the fault lies not in the stars dear caesar, but in ourselves"

And crazies being left wing, I'm sorry but that would take a little too much time to refute here except to say go get a little historical education precisley the OPPOSITE is true

Honestly This guys rants about original intent of the constitution, about Govt takeovers and conspiracies and debt, precisely the tea party platform,

And I know you have probably been to a lot of tea Party meetings, but I hope you are not ACTUALLY stupid enough to think that the average democrat buys into the communist manifesto do you? Other than some aging hippies and a few sad college arts students in their "look at me, I'm deep" phase life actually takes the darn thing seriously

As an outsider perhaps it is presumptous
to comment, however, after reading all these postings I am in despair.

From the FACTS available it appears this
deranged individual deliberatly targeted
the congresswoman, his political stripe is of no consequence.

Here in my country (Australia) we also
have our fair share of right and left wing
ideologues in the media but the discourse is a little more civil and much less inflammatory.

What is a matter of moment to me was the
easy availability of him being able to
LEGALLY purchase his weapon and thereby
lies the true culprit.

Some years back we had a mass murder at
Port Arthur in Tasmania and as a result
of that our ULTRA conservative Prime Minister and close mate of George W Bush
initiated legislation BANNING the sale and
import of semi automatic guns.

Many people overseas look to the USA as
a beacon of democratic freedom and applaud efforts by you to bring that political
concept to other countries.

This is a tragedy that is oft repeated and
yet nobody wants to move against unfettered gun ownership.

Poor fella your country!

I find it somewhat curious that MumboJumboo, 912anita, and others are so desperate to tie this to the Tea Party. From the evidence we have so far, which is obviously incomplete at this point, Loughner was left-leaning in his politics, or so say people who knew him. The Sarah Palin, Tea Party line would work if it were someone of that political mindset pulling the trigger, but this doesn't appear to have been the case. Loughner does appear to have been paranoid in many respects, but his political dabblings, at least from his reading list, appear to be somewhat mixed and confused, leaning toward quasi-anarchism. That people who have known him over the past several years describe him as left-leaning is not entirely surprising.

This pattern is becoming all too familiar. Some nut does something crazy and destructive, and the left is immediately out in full force blaming the right. Then, as details unfold, it's discovered that the perpetrator was actually left-leaning. The left quiets, but never apologizes, or else it just keeps blaring loudly that the right is to blame, even if all of the evidence points otherwise. This same thing happened when the guy flew his plan into the IRS building in Texas last year or the year before. At some point, people need to wake up and realize that very often, these acts are committed by people who are simply crazy. The victim may be a political figure, but the violence itself is not so rooted in politics as in madness.

On the other hand, if you want to keep claiming that politics is at the root of people who act out in this manner, then the left is going to have to take a long, hard look at itself because the last several crazies have all been left-leaning people. These people are not adopting the rhetoric of the right (as nutty as that rhetoric is sometimes), but of the left.

So then why Giffords? Maybe there was no particular reason at all. Maybe she was a high-profile target of convenience. Maybe, too, it was because Giffords had rejected Pelosi as minority leader. Maybe, too, it had to do with a desire to start and out-and-out war between the right and left. Or maybe it was just the senseless act of a madman, for which we shall never receive an explanation.

Whatever you choose to say about this tragic shooting, however, it takes a particularly bizarre contortion to claim that a left-leaning person bought into the very arguments that he despises and rejects and acted in violence based on those rejected beliefs. That just makes no sense.

And, lupur, it's worth saying that these kinds of crazies do show up in other countries, too. Sometimes they are just using knives instead of guns. Sometimes they actually have guns. In the case of Japan, one group of crazies even armed themselves with sarin gas and attacked the subway. We probably do see more of these in America, but we're also apt, as Americans, to notice them when they happen here, whereas similar events in other countries are quickly forgotten by us.

I hope you realise that under that logic, nboone could blame the tea party no matter what happens, even if it IS their fault,

The fact is, as I said before, this level of gun violence would not exist without the ridiculous gun laws in this country, (certainly happens much more rarely if ever in other countries) and the anti government Hysteria is not a coincidence,

I really can't see how any rational person can not help but come to that conclusion, it is a direct conclusion, a movement conctinuously demonizes and promotes ideas govt conspiracy and takeovers, continuosly implies the "need for action" and implies even in a half joking way about violence, and then one of their acolytes actually does something in line with the rhetoric, tell me, in what universe is that line of reasoning unresonable?

To simply blame it on bad luck, or one bad, or that the guy is a left wing commie, or whatever excuses you can come up with is nothing but a rather pathetic attempt by the tea party to escape blame,

Giffords was on Kos "target" list:

Evidently, she was "targeted" by the liberal Daily Kos because she wasn't faithful to the Constitution:

Three problems with this assertion:

-The term is "Progressive" - "Liberal" fell out of fashion in the late 1980s. Progressive is more self-descriptive

-Progressives don't burn the US flag (or anyone else's either)

-Progressives are not communists (which maybe is WAY too much nuance for conservatives to get their heads around late in the evening)

Sheriff Clarence Dupnik pointed to the vitriolic political rhetoric that has consumed the country as he denounced the shooting that claimed several of his friends as victims, including U.S. District Judge John Roll. "When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," the sheriff said. "And unfortunately, Arizona I think has become the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."

Arizona - mecca for the home schooling Nazis.

Yeah, maybe. But you people have NO credibility. If he were a liberal, you'd be going to town with it. So maybe just shut your yaps for a day?

Of course, now we know that a deranged lefty killed a bunch of Democrats.

Will we see any navel-gazing articles by the media about how the left creates an environment of hatred -- and turns it on themselves?

No, of course not. All of you who took such joy in proclaiming this was a right-wing Tea Bagger attack will now pretend it never happened. And that clown Obama will go on Oprah and cry about it.

This is not by any means a particularly violent time in our history. The late 1960s saw the assassinations of President Kennedy and his brother Robert and their own assassins, Martin Luther King, Medgar Evers and four innocent little black girls. Just a sampling.

Right here on this page is an article regarding the secession of the South. Perhaps some will think our Civil War wasn't violent enough to stand up to the nastiness of our time.

There's the furor over the sinking of the Maine (later proved to be accidental), and no doubt things were not terribly peaceful when this nation rose against the British in the 18th century (twice). Both had their share of irresponsible calls to violence against the innocent and harmless.

Stop hijacking this sorry event for political blathering and see it for what it is: one individual with severe problems committing a heinous act. He has plenty of antecedents, and they go back a long way before the demons most of those here are blaming for today's events.

Amazing and distressing that otherwise sensible people use this forum to disparage, even insult, people or political groups with whom they disagree. A better strategy would be civility.

Vitriol and nasty generalizations do not advance an argument but undermine the credibility of those who engage in them. If you feel your point of view or your remedy to our nation's problems are worthy of consideration, present it with respect for others, especially those you are tempted to write off as hopeless or not worth engaging.

Clearly your intentions are good; your method is somewhat suspect. Name-calling makes the attacker more reprehensible than his targets and his message is lost.

When things like today's tragic events occur, some people think of the accumulated baggage of weakness on the right masquerading as strength, fairly or not. The equation goes: crying about being voted out of the White House as if they can't stand democracy=the modern right=bullying rhetoric and big guy posturing=weakness=something will explode sooner or later. Weak lefties don't have that masquerade of faux toughness nd focus on the second amendment associated with them, they're just more obviously weak. You reap what you sow in this age of Big Baby Conservatism, where too many people go on Fox and act as if they would prefer one party rule. Given how silly I think many rightwing pundits are, I doubt we'll see much introspection about "wow, why did so many people automatically think, Fox viewers. How did we get that 'we can't cope with democracy' image? And yeah, I can say that, because I used to consider myself a conservative before so many of its spokesmen on Fox went all Big Baby. You used to think character and principles when you thought of conservative spokesmen back then. These days, it's the silly Fox noise that creates a din that screams OMG we can't cope with life in a democracy.

When I expressed outrage when Angle first expressed her calls for violent threats, a serious gun-toting, christian co-worker said that he would vote for her "without reservation".
The politics of the shooter are meaningless. His mental state is not an issue. The fact remains that there have been thinly-veiled calls for exactly this sort of action, made in an atmosphere that has been deliberately poisoned by those who seek to gain by dividing us and inciting us against each other.

It is clear watching his YouTube broadcasts that Loughner was upset by Republican efforts to force the House to read the Constitution. He seems to have swallowed the Tea Party's arguments hook, line and sinker on this one, and the House Republicans played into his hands by going along with demands they read the Constitution on the House floor. I can see why he was irate. It wasn't the real Constitution, but the bowlderized version stripped of the votes of slaves, etc., and cleaned up for C-Span. We need the original version with all its warts and molds, and not this cleaned up version. So much for Tea Party activism on this point. Yet another example of how the Democratic establishment is rolling over the Tea Party reformers.

Completely agree with anyone that says that tragedies like these are not, yet at least, to be used by anyone for politics. There are plenty of nutjobs around the world belonging to either extreme (though they do tend to focus on the right in the US), and any sensible person should condemn such actions as a first response.

PS: Not for politics, but for the sake of reality: saying that Mein Kampf is a socialist favourite is the very epitome of moronic Glenn Beckism. A person whose favourite books are the Communist Manifesto (written by a Jew) and Mein Kampf (urging the killing of Jews) is seriously deranged.

Posted by: fp3690 | January 8, 2011 8:03 PM | Report abuse

And people wonder why the Chinese and Russians control the media so much? Because of its ability to incite violence.

Ironically, under a communist or socialist system those calling for violence or racial hatred, even vaguely, would have had legal liability for their actions. Not here though.

People are unequivocally responsible for their actions, but the media shares responsibility for sensationalizing the political rhetoric and legitimizing it by giving it a voice to reach tens of millions.

This was a horrible event but if America continues to feed upon itself politically and socially, it will give impetus to future horrors no doubt. Is it any wonder why America has lost its leadership in the world given the images it projects of itself? We've always been violent, but political violence carries special concern for those that have experienced their own political violence. Alas, we are becoming the best argument for not pursuing the American way of life.

Rhsimard, you are right and you are wrong.

It is true that innocent people including a 9 year old child have been murdered, and everyone should grieve for them.

But there is an entire movement of people out there encouraging these kinds of murders, for their own political ends. From Jesse Kelly to Sharron Angle to Sarah Palin, even high powered politicians are urging their followers to take up their guns and pursue their ends through violent "2nd Amendment" means. This kind of provocation, if unchecked, can only result in more deaths.

No moral person could stand by silently while they continue to advocate murder, and you should rethink your position.

The Republican/Corporate oligarchy continues its dumbing down of American education and rewriting American history.
The right-wing mouthpieces continue their inciteful lies.
Right-Wing terrorism has killed more Americans than Al-Quaeda. Most of the victims have been darker skinned than Congress. Congresswoman Giffords is Jewish. Texas Teabaggers seek to replace a Jewish Republican Speaker of Texas House with a right-wing "Christian" who bought the insurance policies of Aids patients as an investment, and believes "sodomy" in the marriage bed should be outlawed.

The roots of this evil lie not in the left, the right, talk radio, Capitol rhetoric, Dems, Repubs, Tea or any other party. They lie in those who put more value at a time like this on political attack/defend reflexes than on the value of human life and respect for it. Sorry to disappoint all you assorted axe-grinders and hobby-horse riders, but the young man's ramblings and gibberish are classic schizophrenia, and he probably would have opened fire on a group made of completely different people, because his problem was what was going on INSIDE his head, not outside.

Loughner's ravings revolve around demands that currency be backed by gold or silver, which is a Libertarian talking point; and he rails against federalism, which is a right-wing talking point.

The guy's posts are incoherent anyway, and he is obviously very sick mentally, whatever he believes his politics are. The fact that he has been functioning well enough to have created his posts is a bit surprising.

Noting the roles of Beck, Bachman, Angle, Palin and others in whipping up violent hysteria is not simply a political tit for tat. The point is that people in the public domain used to take their roles seriously enough to avoid inciting crazed elements of our society to action.

Our current right-wing demogogues delight in hinting at "second-amendment remedies" and then backtracking when confronted by their irresponsibility.

The fact is that anytime you promote violence or hatred, someone is going to act on the emotions you have incited in them. It happened with the shooting in the Glenn Beck Tides Foundation case. It happened in the case of the affluent taxpayer who flew his "private plane" into a federal building. It happened in Oklahoma City.

When it finally happens, the hate mongerers immediately point out that the killer was crazy and also "read the Communist manifesto." Hell, Hitler read the Communist Manifesto. Then, they tell us how peaceful their organization is, disavowing all the racism, name-calling and outright lying that is all on the record.

Remember when the Chicago federal judge's family was murdered and Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, stood on the floor of the U.S. Senate and suggested that the murder might have been caused by "activist judges?" Because Republicans were in power and the media refused to question anything they did, that disgraceful episode went largely unnoticed. Naturally, Cornyn included the required caveat that he did not "condone violence."

Of course, this is a personal tragedy. But it is also a tragic consequence of our national politics and the "leadership" of people like Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck, Sharron Angle and Sarah Palin.

No amount of weasel words can erase that fact.

Also, there was the article on Daily Kos written on Wed Jun 25, 2008 titled 2010 will be primary season by kos which stated that "As we've seen these past couple of weeks, we've got a problem in our caucus --while we have been busy stocking up on more Democrats, fact is the good ones are being swamped by the bad ones." It went on further to say later in the article that "Who to primary? Well, I'd argue that we can narrow the target list by looking at those Democrats who sold out the Constitution last week. I've bolded members of the Blue Dogs for added emphasis."
One of the names listed was Giffords, Gabrielle (AZ-08)
It also said "Not all of these people will get or even deserve primaries, but this vote certainly puts a bulls eye on their district."
Remember this was on Daily Kos.

I would not be surprised if the record bears the following for this deranged murderer: anti-goverment, tea party, self proclaimed patriot.

Very soon there will be an accounting for the Beck's, Palin's, Bachmanns (etc.)of this country. Why: Because "the simple believe every word" (Proverbs 14:15)

McCarthyism had's it's 20 minutes too. But it was exposed too. My prayer is for the victims families and those who are still alive.

A lunatic is a lunatic and has nothing to do with politics. Everyone on this site that is spewing hateful language towards the other side is doing the same thing that all the talking heads do on tv (and there are hateful talking heads on both sides too.) Please stop spewing hatred and just say a prayer (or send good wishes if you don't believe in prayer) for Rep. Giffords, her family, and the families of all the others that were killed or hurt.

The gunman listed BOTH Mein Kampf AND The Communist Manifesto as favorite books. He, also, listed We the Living, Ayn Rand's extremely ANTI-COMMUNIST novel along with the Wizard of Oz and Alice in Wonderland. He, also, thought we needed to all use a new alphabet. This kid was confused. We won't know what he really believed unless he talks, and I doubt he ever will. He has a decent shot at an insanity plea.

More telling is the photo on his myspace page with an American History book with The White House on the cover and a gun over that.

Still, I doubt he would have even noticed Giffords if Sarah Palin hadn't put a big target on her and told him to reload.
