Ariz. tea party activists voice shock at shooting

By Sandhya Somashekhar

Trent Humphries was headed to the local Safeway for some milk when he was stopped by a police barricade. It wasn't until later that he would find out that a congresswoman with whom he had often clashed politically had been shot there, along with more than a dozen people. A neighbor was among the dead.

"We were sickened," recalled Humphries, an organizer with the Tucson tea party movement. "Obviously, we do not condone violence. We've had dozens and dozens of events and we've never had violence. Whoever did this, they're not grounded in political thought. I would be very surprised if it was someone who had ever come to our meetings."

Across Arizona, conservative and tea party activists expressed shock and dismay at the shooting of Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others in the grocery store parking lot in Tucson on Saturday morning. Though little was known about the alleged shooter Saturday afternoon, questions inevitably arose about his politics. Giffords, a moderate Democrat, had been frequently criticized by tea party groups for her opposition to the state's crackdown on illegal immigrants and her support for the health care overhaul.

Liberals on Saturday blamed the tea party movement's sometimes militant rhetoric -- for example, former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's advice to her supporters via Twitter, "Don't Retreat, Instead - RELOAD," or Nevada Senate candidate Sharron Angle (R) advocating "second-amendment remedies" for some of the nation's problems. Palin had also posted a U.S. map depicting crosshairs over the states where she hoped to oust Democratic incumbents. That map no longer appears on the Web site of her political action committee.

Some Arizona tea party activists, like Humphries, said it was unfair to connect the politics of a large and mostly peaceful movement to the actions of an individual. The day's events led others to question the environment fostered by some of the more confrontational members of their movement.

"You have to be very careful what you say. We live in a very polarized environment here in the United States, and while I do believe in the Second Amendment, no one should be referring to Second Aamendment solutions," said Patrick Beck, president of the Mohave County tea party group in the northern part of the state.

"I've given many speeches to my group and at different events in my area, and in doing so I'm very conscious of who's listening," he said. "When I look out at the crowd, 99 percent of the people I see are just like me -- average, everyday Americans who want constitutional government, fiscal responsibility, things of that nature. Every once in a while, though, I see someone -- how should I put it? -- who is getting too excited, who seems a little farther on the fringe...I realized I had to tone down my comments a little bit, less yelling and screaming and more educational."

When asked about the Palin target map, Beck said: "I don't know. It's really easy in the context of what happened this morning to look back and say, 'I don't know if this was such a bright idea.' At the same time, there are other politicians from the other side of the political spectrum who have said similar military-style sayings. Do I really believe they are intending harm on people? No."

Sharon Angle and Sarah Palin are both defending their mean spirited threatening words of violence, their ignorant call for aggression, painting targets on people and then when those people are murdered all these shrill, crotchety evil hearted women can do is defend their antagonist hate filled words? no remorse? where is the apology? where are the regrets? wow, these women are domestic terrorists, they should both be in a jail cell and be made to repent.

Attempts by malicious leftist malcontents, marxists, drones, and various other idiotic Obama supporters to smear good American citizens (some of which are tea party supporters), and blame them for this heinous crime will fail dismally. Just as attempts to blame Rush Limbaugh for McVeigh's OK City bombing were just as ridiculous as the gibberish posted by some of the idiots who are posting here.

You leftist haters can go pound sand. We won last November, and idiocy like your usual smears about such violent crime (usually the domaine of you leftists), will not change anything regarding November 2012.

I can see November, 2012 from my house and it looks better than ever.

Wow, there have been a couple people who have made very intelligent comments here. The Dems trying to use yesterdays shooting for self ambition, and to start with Obama if you want to point a finger? I figure the previous posts were made by people connected to the White House or share the lack of oxygen that the White House does. The answer for yesterdays event lies in a previous event from 1999 with the Columbine shooting. It was addressed to Congress through the father of one of the victims. http://www.getipm.com/personal/father-plea.htm. It is also addressed in the Federalist #10. Obama, Reid, Pelosi are part of a destructive faction.

In the last 24 hours, LEFTISTS HAVE LOST THEIR MINDS.

If you try (in your fever-adled brains) to hold the TEA Party or Palin (even remotely) responsible for yesterday’s atrocity... then you must hold President Hussein responsible whenever anyone in this country brings a gun to a knife fight and shoots someone. PERIOD. Your own logic will be at work.

Let me repeat, Leftists: YOU HAVE LOST YOUR FRICKIN' MINDS.

Leftists and Democrats want us to focus on the (alleged) “right's sometimes martial anti-government rhetoric" after the tragedy yesterday. Maybe they should start with President Obama. He's clearly the worst offender.
http://gatewaypundit.rightnetwork.com/2011/01/did-barack-obama-cause-the-shootings-yesterday-in-tucson

** Obama: “They Bring a Knife…We Bring a Gun”
** Obama to His Followers: “Get in Their Faces!”
** Obama on ACORN Mobs: “I don’t want to quell anger. I think people are right to be angry! I’m angry!”
** Obama to His Mercenary Army: “Hit Back Twice As Hard”
** Obama on the private sector: “We talk to these folks… so I know whose ass to kick.“
** Obama to voters: Republican victory would mean “hand to hand combat”
** Obama to lib supporters: “It’s time to Fight for it.”
** Obama to Latino supporters: “Punish your enemies.”
** Obama to democrats: “I’m itching for a fight.”

If Leftists really want to consider the atmosphere of violent language, they should start at the White House.

This was a predictable outcome of the extreme hyperbolic rhetoric that has become a mainstay of the tea party movement -- claims that Obama and the Democrats are trying to destroy the nation, assertions that left-of-center members of Congress are guilty of unAmerican activities and beliefs, commentaries equating progressivism with communism or Marxism, and inflammatory calls to "take back the country" and resort to "Second Amendment remedies" will only serve to boil the blood and embolden the irrational thinking of a handful of the most fervent supporters of Angle, Palin, Beck, Bachmann, Brewer, et al.

People who aspire to positions of leadership need to recognize the inherent potential hazards of such inflammatory commentary. Simply because one has the First Amendment Right to say a thing does not mean it is the right thing to say.

I'd say the people who crow the loudest about "gun rights" are the most culpable in these incidents. The idea that it should be EASIER to own guns in this absurdly-violent nation is an affront to logic and reason. The NRA has been stomping on reasonable legislation for decades, like a nationwide computer registry of all gun buyers, which would greatly assist law enforcement.

It only takes a single shot for a so-called "law abiding citizen" to prove what's really been going on in his squirming mind. This particular punk's firearm legal status isn't clear, but there are plenty of cases in point. Obsession with deadly weapons is an indicator of derangement, no matter how many flags you fly.

It's just a matter of time before some drooling Tea Party global warming denier goes after a scientist with the excuse that Cap & Trade cost him a job, etc. Most Tea Party folk are too stupid to understand that a stable climate is keeping them viable, and atmospheric chemistry doesn't recognize tax policy or greedy human wants.

Dear Partisan idiots from both sides. AMERICANS were attacked today. Shortly before McKinley was shot, hostile rhetoric came from Mark Twain, Wm. Jennings Bryan, Wm. Randolf Hearst. The assassin had tried to contact Emma Goldman, so she was arrested. Goldman HAD incited violence, but Czolgolz, the assassin, was too crazy for even her. Hearst HAD suggested that someone should shoot McKinley. Inflamed rhetoric is not new, and fanatics are not either. The argument that his "acquaintances" called him a liberal means nothing. This is a Republican leaning district and to the right, "nuts" and "liberal" are used interchangeably. My friends from the right in this post, prove this. Anyone they disagree with is "liberal". Hateful behavior is not isolated to the Tea Party. Republican filmmaker Evan Coyne Maloney of Brain-terminal.com was attacked at a liberal gathering. So this is on both sides and must stop. Not a new problem, but we learned at the turn of the last century to modify it. We must re-learn this lesson again. The issue of was not the overbearing imagination of these people, they had been receiving death threats and their offices attacked. "We are on Sarah Palin's targeted list," Giffords said. "The way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of the gunsight over our district. When people do that, they have got to realize there are consequences to that action." That is a quote from the victim. It is a ironic talking point, since it seems to me Palin, in this case did not incite this person. His YouTubes and tweets reflect a irrational mind that can not be attributed to ideology. Now, those that think they know history and claim that National Socialist German Workers Party was the choice of Rudolf Jung. According to Wikpedia the party "was opposed to non-nationalist political movements, especially on the left, including the Social Democratic Party of Germany (SPD) and the newly formed Communist Party of Germany (KPD)" " Socialist" was added to attract middle class workers in Bavaria looking for more rights, and known to be anti-semitic. The only take over of property was Jewish property. The business community wanted a return to the Kaiser until the "Fuhrur principle" and elections were won. After 1933, a great many backed it, but many resisted till the destruction of Germany. Nazism is a great accusation for opponents, but does not fit either ideology. Hitler was out to destroy laissez-faire capitalism, socialism, communism, economic liberalism, and democracy. This fanatic's reading list included anti-communist and communist readings. You cannot rationalize a schizophrenic ideology, any more than left or right can put Hitler's rantings in the other party. Fact is rhetoric is not civil, both sides have been physically attacking each other. We are from the UNITED States. Uncivil behavior has taken out our best and brightest. Overturning elections with bullets should be one thing we are ALL against.

The only thing I would add is "conveniently forgetting".

The reason you libs always reach for this stick, is you think its the quickest way to tar anyone on the Right. For all your outrage over Hitler mustaches on Obama signs, this has been Play #17 of the Leftist playbook for quite some time.

The reason I know better is because I took the time to actually learn history instead of using it.

Look at this article from Politco... talks about "targeting" blue dog democrats by liberals...

The congresswoman was a blue dog democrat... and now we are finding out the shooter is a liberal nutcase (am I being redundant?). It appears that it's not Palin's fault she was shot but the hate coming from the left.

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0807/5498.html

Liberal blogger TARGETS 'Bush Dog' Dems

...Matt Stoller, who blogs at the well-trafficked OpenLeft.com, has compiled a list of 38 House “Blue Dog” Democrats who have voted with Republicans on key legislation, and called on the activist community to put pressure on them...

“They are going to be very methodical in this first stage,” said Conn Carroll, author of the Hotline’s Blogometer, of the Netroots. “I’d be very surprised if they end up TARGETING more than two or three people on the list....

One of Stoller’s potential TARGETS, Rep. Melissa Bean (D-Ill.), has won reelection in a conservative-leaning suburban Chicago district.

The war in Iraq has ignited much of the liberal base’s discontent. Over the last several weeks, several Democrats in TARGETED races have softened their position on the war, fueling even more outrage from the left.

"KNOXVILLE, Tenn. — An out-of-work truck driver accused of opening fire at a Unitarian church, killing two people, left behind a note suggesting that he targeted the congregation out of hatred for its liberal policies, including its acceptance of gays, authorities said Monday.

A four-page letter found in Jim D. Adkisson's small SUV indicated he intentionally targeted the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church because, the police chief said, "he hated the liberal movement" and was upset with "liberals in general as well as gays." "

Hmmm...the young man's reading list betrays those who would like to suggest this was a tea party type of guy. The Communist Manifesto is not the stuff of a tea party Flag waver. When all else fails, ask the folks who knew him. The first to speak up speaks of a leftist. Really? Actually, he sounds a bit more like a nutcase anarchist, but there will be a lot of crow to be consumed when this has run it's course. Ah, the cost of offering an opinion based on political emotion before one has the facts.

But, if you need someone to blame for it let me pint you to Chris Matthews. He regularly has on guests who spew the vilest of hate speech ~ like they think it would be good to blow up another federal building or a daycare center.

For example just last evening on MSNBC Mark Penn told everybody that Obama needed an Oklahoma City event to reconnect with the people.

Posted by: ptrppr100 | January 8, 2011 7:47 PM | Report abuse

It is time for individuals to look closely at Sarah Palin and understand that her every word and deed is self serving to promote her own interests. It is time to recognize that those who speak of God and the Lord in one breath and reject the principles of love expressed by Jesus in the other are far removed from any semblance of charity and goodwill.

All choices have consequence and when we cast stones as words and images activating hate and divisiveness in others, we practice everything but the Christian way of being.

Man's first responsibility is to turn towards the kingdom of God and not to his neighbor with malice of intention. Anger does not serve God, whether in the guise of politics or living.

If all that we build is based upon gossip and judgment, whom do we honor with our thoughts, words and deeds? Certainly it is not the God who created us.

I ask you, did not Jesus turn the other cheek/ Why then would we honor politicians, who wear their beliefs like the feathers of a peacock while having no demonstration of charity in their heart.

Consider that there is always another viewpoint of any subject and self righteousness is never far from vanity. If we differ from our neighbor, it does not make him evil or give us right to incite riots and hate in those who follow us.

Sarah Palin, like most who benefit from the anger and dissatisfaction of others, serves not their heart when she speaks divisively in her unceasing self promotion, but rather activates the worst in them and confirms their right in holding it.

All who incited the ignorant to violence, who serve the lower nature of their followers, are vessels not for the love3 of God but for the passions of the mind.

Let us enter into silence and take stock of our careless words and images designed to cause effect. Are we here to remind each other of God and His sacred presence or to worship our viewpoint about one thing or another.

Let us remember the principle of wisdom. It is better to be in harmony with our heart and that of our neighbor than to be right. None who cast stones upon their neighbor or hold their opinion like a flag in their parade of vanity, march to the rhythm of the Holy Spirit but to their own need to be seen and heard.

In the past, before radio, and now, the digital age, when a person who has the media's attention made a public statement, say in New York City, it didn't reach the rest of the country until weeks, or even months later. Now, when a public official says something, no matter how trivial, it reaches everybody else in this country, including the world, instantaneously. It is not, so much, what is being said, but who is listening; which is, potentially, much, much more than the people in the room. Of course, this raises the odds of a psychopath or terrorist responding in an unfriendly manner. This is common sense. It is an unassailable fact that in order for Democracy to flourish we must have an educated society, which endows people with the ability to think critically and to filter out incendiary remarks a public official might make. This is why education is so important to sustain a true democracy. For without it, even the provocateur can attain the highest office.

Everyone knew this was coming. Virtually every act of violence committed in the last 2 years, the Left has been trying to pin it on the Tea Parties. It's always been the Next Page In Their Playbook since the 1930s... nothing ever changes. What this is really about is the Left's perverse, fascist desire to round up all the Tea Partiers and shut down the opposition to their Socialization of America plan, aka, fundamentally re-founding the country. They knew Americans would resist this, that's why the first thing DHS did was focus the anti-terror apparatus on the "home grown" threat. This is their Reichstag moment. You lefties have been waiting for this, admit it. Long, feverish nights, dreaming of boxcars full of conservatives heading off to who knows where. It's the stuff fascist dreams are made of!

Not a world of "shock" Teabaggers express, or will express, washes the blood from them. They, along with FOX News, Limbaugh, Palin, and the rest of the right-wingnuts, Angle, the thugs taking guns to town hall meetings, etc., have been making love to this with just about every word they've written or spoken since Obama won the White House.

Next, after their "shock," transparent and thin as celophane, has worn away, we'll hear from them that the killer is just a crazy guy with a gun, then we'll hear that he's a socialist, or a leftist, or anything but a right-wingnut child of theirs.

But heart and soul he is their child and his crime is their crime. The sin lieth at the door, and it has been lying there for some time. But Palin, et al, despite warnings, kept stoking the right-wingnut fires with whacky rhetoric, thick with images of guns, targets, etc., and the result has been these predictable murders. It is on their heads.

Nevermind that Jesse Kelly is most famous for his famous event where he fired an M16 and invited others to fire it at

Sure they'll say: "This is a horrible thing, but it's likely completely unrelated to anything political." Just like the fellows who were going around assassinating abortion doctors; "loan gunmen." And no relationship between incitement from demagogues such as Palin, and Kelly and the benighted individuals who decided to act on that incitement.

And of course if the shoes were on the other foot, these same folks would be for calling out the national guard and making mass arrests -- so this is complete cynicism on their part.

The blood is on your hands Sarah, and Kelly, and Tea Party, regardless of how crazy the man is who pulled the trigger.

Oh for goodness sakes!! The fact is, Republicans/conservatives/right wing/tea party/ Obama haters have been throwing temper tantrums for the past two years. President Obama has been subjected to more hate and disrespect than any other President EVER!

George Bush presided the deaths of over 4000 thousand US Military, the maiming of thousands more because of faulty intelligence and sending them to fight with not enough troops and not the right or enough equipment. So, what exactly is your point? Let's blame President Obama because Republicans don't like him? Yeah, right!

And these Tea Party people have brought GUNS to their rallies.

It is time for American political discourse to become more civilized and stop demonizing those one disagrees with,
or calling them morons, or other epithets of choice. That happens on all sides but unquestionably the irresponsible talk has been more prevalent from the right wing than from the left.

It was easy to see something terrible would happen in Jan Brewer's Arizona.

26 December 2010

Sarah Palin and Jan Brewer – A Gruesome Twosome

Will we ever see the day
when Sarah Palin goes away?
She now appears on a t.v. reality show
in a landscape that’s always covered in snow.

She showed us how in her land benighted
one can shoot a caribou even if short-sighted.
It is trapped and before a camera placed to make it look bigger
giving Sarah plenty of time to pull the trigger.

She yells about non-existent death panels in Obama’s health care
but is seemingly totally unaware
of the death panel in the Arizona of Republican Jan Brewer,
a state which, since she has been governor, many compare to a reeking sewer.

Given Brewer’s hatred of immigrants or anyone not white
is she among those who think Obama to be President has no right?
She wants people of whose face she does not approve
to quickly pack up and themselves remove.

When she manages to utter a half intelligible sentence she raises the alarm
about people she is convinced might cause harm.
She must bitterly regret she can’t pick up a gun and cook their goose
just as Palin from her helicopter shoots her moose.

While Sarah is broadcasting her mind-numbing pretentious rants,
not a word from her as Jan pulls the plug on those waiting for organ transplants.*
Many wonder just what Madam Governor plans to do with her huge stash
of millions of dollars in unspent contingency cash.

For reasons unknown Palin decided she would take a trip
and stand on Haiti’s sinking ship.
She arrived surrounded by a select chosen few
consisting of a Fox News channel crew.

Hasn’t that unfortunate country suffered too much
for it now to be allowed to fall into Palin’s clutch?
Haven’t the people been through enough
without having to watch Sarah as she struts her stuff?

Are those who tout her as a 2012 presidential candidate really serious
or are they snorting something that makes them delirious?
But if she does turn out to be the Republicans’ choice
then throughout the land all sane people can rejoice.

* Brewer cut organ transplants form the state’s health care system even though she is sitting on millions of dollars of unspent discretionary federal stimulus cash. Many think she’s the one who needs a transplant. – of a brain.

Sure the shooter is a deranged individual. Because of the relentless hate speech bombarding him and others from the Far Right - in speeches, Faux "News," Tea Party activist, Palin, and rightwing bloviators - clearly has impact.

For most, the impact is on how they vote and how they demonstrate. Yet this Tea Party hate speech is an incitement to violence, pure and simple. "Lock and load"? How else for someone on the edge to interpret that?

The American left simply does NOT behave this way. When is the last time you heard Democrats say something like "lock and load" or refer to "Second Amendment remedies" if the election doesn't go their way.

This kind of speech and incitement to violence is the sole responsibility of the Far Right - which is the only kind of conservatism allowed in this country. No, Left and Right are NOT equally responsible, and it's irresponsible - and delusional - to say they are.

Funny how the Tea Party leaders are trying to flee the consequences of their hateful, nativist, and racist rhetoric

I don’t know what the shooter’s politics were, and I’m sure he was insane whatever his personal philosophy. Nor do I believe that Tea Party activists are legally culpable for today’s massacre. But I do know that the Tea Party and the Republicans have, for the past two years, repeatedly used incendiary rhetoric about “Second Amendment remedies” and have condoned the carrying pistols and automatic rifles to town hall meetings and political rallies. They have created an atmosphere where violent rhetoric is the norm, not the exception.

The GOP and its right wing allies have taken politics to new lows, not to the point of actually inciting civil war, but not that far from it either. The Republican Governor of Texas has raised the possibility of seceding from the Union, and every political disagreement has been posited in terms of evil vs. good, or liberty vs. tyranny. Our progressive tax system and regulatory agencies which have existed for nearly a century are criticized daily as being akin to communist plots and our president is regularly denounced as a socialist, a communist, a Muslim or as a terrorist sympathizer.

It is also true that right wing assassins have already murdered at least one abortion doctor, several police officers and a guard at the U.S. Holocaust Museum. Right wing propagandists like Glenn Beck, Michael Savage and Mark Levin spend hours each and every day inciting hatred and fear in the most outrageous manner. Hate radio is big business, and it is irresponsibly supported by other big businesses. And make no mistake about it; this is not a bipartisan problem. Today, only one side of the political spectrum is beating the drums of violent rhetoric. Unlike violent leftist movements from America’s past (which were forced underground and denounced by the political left) today’s right-wing terrorists and terrorist supporters are accepted by and included in the highest policy making circles of the GOP and its conservative movement allies.

I don’t blame conservative politicians for the actions of an insane individual, but I do blame them for creating an environment in which insane people feel just that much more secure in their delusional thinking and just that less inhibited about taking violent action.

Sincerely and sadly,

While 99.9% of those who listen to outrageous political statements, those who spout those statements must also live with the fact that there is that small percentage that truly takes them too seriously.

Claiming your president was born in Kenya (help us jesus, the lady shouted in Congress) or that he is a Muslim, communist, fascist, socialist (terms with a lot of mutual exclusivity) -- these statements inflame hatred and fear.

You reap what you sow.

Why the hate?

Listen to Keith Olbermann, Rachael Maddow, Rush Limbaugh and the other hatemongers who are put on the air by their stations to foment hate to make money.

Money talks, and the Olbermanns, Maddows and Limbaughs will keep the hate and cash rolling in.

"If ballots don't work, bullets will." - Tea Bagger activist Joyce Kaufman, who was originally going to be the chief of staff for tea bagger Alan West. It doesn't matter if a right-wing judge was among those hurt, just like you tea baggers DON'T CARE that Muslims were victims of the 9/11 attacks, and Muslims have been attacked by Islamic terrorists since the start of the war on terror(and killed in greater numbers than troops are). Save the bellyaching about alleged double-standards for condemning all Muslims, because the ONLY time you right-wingers complain about prejudice is when it happens to YOU.

You endorse laws that allow cops in AZ to harrass people for citizenship papers even YOU don't carry around. You've endorsed violent revolutionary rhetoric, and now you want to whine about being stereotyped as the violent nuts you pretended to be. And wasn't it tea baggers who showed up at Obama rallies with MACHINE GUNS? I don't think tea baggers are violent people, I just think they're a lot like gangster rappers, who exploit violent rhetoric and imagery for short-term gain, but don't want it pinned to them when something happens. Well, now something has happened, people are dead, and suddenly you wanna be DOVES? Please, the absolute BEST and most patriotic thing you could possibly dio for America is to just be quiet. You know, like you did when Bush and Cheney were bombing countries for oil and TORTURING people in direct contradiction to America's Constitution and values.

Assuming he IS a "tea partier", then James Loughner is to the "Tea Party" as Nidal Hassan is to Islam.

There are ALWAYS crazies in ANY large group of people loosely united under some sort of vague ideological tent. Conflating the behavior of the insane, violent few with that of the vast peaceful majority multiplies the damage they do a hundred-fold. It happens on BOTH sides and it does NONE of us any good.

Those who think this disgusting attack the result, in part or in whole, of aggressive political rhetoric should perhaps refrain from spewing it themselves. Take a deep breath.

And we should ALL wait until we have more facts before we make our final judgements.

Folks, everybody please chill out.

This is a horrible thing, but it's likely completely unrelated to anything political. Seriously.

Look at this guy's video's on youtube. He shows all the marks of being severely mentally ill, likely schizophrenic. I don't think this shooter had any conception of, or interest in, things like health care, or Sarah Palin, or Barack Obama, or immigration, or any of the other current political-debate hobby-horses.

This man was living in a world entirely of his own disordered imagining, and it's likely that whatever role Rep. Giffords played in his internal fantasy life was completely removed from the political positions she stood for in real life, just as it's likely that this guy never even looked at or cared about Sarah Palin's site.

Let me repeat: this was not a political assassination in the sense that everyone here seems to think it is. It is the isolated act of a severely ill individual. Terrible, deeply tragic, but not a comment on right-wing/left-wing politics. And everyone who is trying to make it into that, both left-wingers and right-wingers, is probably going to look really silly in the morning.

Take a deep breath, wait for the facts, and for now let's all just mourn the loss of human life and human potential that this day represents - mainly that of the shooting victims, but also of the shooter himself, who represents a life lost to the terrible scourge of mental illness.

Finally, let me close my quoting one of Mr. Loughner's youtube videos:

"I'm a sleepwalker - who turns off the alarm clock."

'Nuf said.

I don't think the Tea Party is responsible for this. The guy who did it is. Has Angle's, Palin's, and their rhetoric contributed to creating an atmosphere of hostility, divisiveness, polarization, wanton anger, and self-righteous despair?

Yes, it likely has. So, convict them of irresponsible speech, if you must, but not culpability in this particular crime.

That said, one casualty of this crime is the right wingers' argument that being able to carry a firearm openly, like you can in AZ, will always stop crimes of this nature from occurring.

Tell that to the parents of the dead 9-year old girl. That law didn't help her.

WELCOME TO THE 21ST CENTURY AMERICA!
THE CURRENT ASSASSINATIONS WERE PREDICTED!

The assassination of a federal judge and the attempted assassination of a member of Congress in Arizona was predicted by those who have LIVED similar experiences before.

HATRED BREEDS VIOLENCE. HATE SPEECH BREEDS VIOLENCE. Just ask the Tea-Bigots. Just ask the radio talk entertainers who are paid to tell ignorant listeners to do violence.

Just read the Websites and the commentaries on them. It ALL BREEDS VIOLENCE that today has resulted in the assassinations of at least 8 people in Tucson including a federal judge and the severely injuring of a Member of the U.S. House.

There WILL be more IF this nation of cowards are permitted to continue their HATRED toward one another. That IS what "history" teaches us that for some reason some Americans have ignored to the detriment of this nation, and to themselves.

For those IN Congress who are now "shocked," they are hypocrites given their conduct on the Floor of the House and Senate, in their political rhetoric, and on behalf of ner do wells who pay for the HATRED among us.

There will be more assassinations given the hatred that exists. It cannot be stopped once it has been fostered by politicians, Wall Street, radio talkers, and others.

Please take a look around. There are assassinations occurring everyday on America's streets while most Americans just shrug it off, leaving it to the police, meaning that MORE are sure to occur UNTIL Americans stand up and say ENOUGH!

The "status quo" is NOT acceptable. Leaving matters like this to the police, to the judicial system is NOT enough by the rest of Americans. THIS is a matter for EVERY American to shoulder and to resolve to STOP, unless of course no one really cares who is assassinated.

Welcome to the 21st Century America. It is just the beginning. And, it has been self-induced.

Since the US is fighting a fundamentalist terrorist movement in political Islam, we have to be clear about the nature of extremism even if it means confronting the fundamentalist extremists in the US. In Isaiah Berlin's essay "The Pursuit of Ideal" he talks about how "romantic" idealistic movements--such as Nazism and Communism--tend to totalitarianism precisely because they want to remake the world according to some ideal. To make the ideal omelet, he said, who would not support breaking some eggs? Yet the eggs keep getting broken and the omelet never gets made.
For those TPers and Obama haters--I am sure you will be quick to excuse your role in this affair as morally pure, so I will just leave you with a quote: "Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice . . .

There is a massive difference between putting crosshairs on a map to indicate that a district held by a Democrat is being targeted in an election battle and some nutcase who walks into a crowd and starts shooting people. The former does not... imply in any way support for the latter. Anyone with any sense at all would know and acknowledge that Sarah Palin nor the Tea Party has never endorsed the use of violence against political opponents. Even Sharon Angles' comments were in the context of a hypothetical situation in which the federal government had ceased obeying the Constitution and had utterly precluded the use of the ballot box solution. There are some people who will use any excuse at all to attack conservatives. Why don't you simply focus on offering support for the wounded and slain instead? Right now, unless factual evidence of a conspiracy is discovered, the only person responsible for this tragedy is the shooter....period.

My my... I suppose then I can condemn all liberals for the bombings committed by the radical left, not to mention the violent attack by SEIU members on an African American vendor at a Tea Party Rally - the only violence I have seen at such an event...yeah, funny,it was done by Union members... yet I see no such condemnation of them in the Washington Post.

We need to realize that the rhetoric, and the firing people up and … for example, we’re on Sarah Palin’s ‘targeted’ list, but the thing is, the way she has it depicted, we’re in the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they’ve gotta realize that there are consequences to that action.”~~U.S. Representative Gabrielle Giffords

While we revere and will fiercely defend our Constitutionally guaranteed right to free speech, we will not allow the shouts of "fire" in the political theatre of the past few years to go un-noted, and those who created and incited the atmosphere that resulted in today's act of naked political violence will be held to account by our justice system.
Those elected officials who fail to fulfill this basic duty of American Law will be held to account at the ballot box.
There was recent talk of "Second Amendment Remedies". There is no credible doubt that this deliberate and premeditated act of violent cowardice is a direct result of that incitement. Those who aided and abetted the political campaign of the author of this "Second Amendment Remedy" language also bear direct responsibility as co-conspiritors.

Charge Glenn Beck and Simple Sarah with conspiracy to commit murder.

"...and while I do believe in the Second Amendment, no one should be referring to Second Amendment solutions," said Patrick Beck, president of the Mohave County tea party group in the northern part of the state.

And yet, your own "tea party" candidate for Senate, Sharron Angle, did just that. You can't throw that stuff out there and not expect it to hit anything.

This can not be successfully spun. Tea Party 'leaders' have been very reckless with their rhetoric. Now they must reap what they have sown.

Tea Party. Bunch of murderers who kill by proxy. Same with Fox News and the rest of them. I bet they are rejoicing now, Limbaugh and Beck and the rest of them. Just read the blog comments out there like "The only good liberal is a dead liberal." And "1 down, 19 to go." America and our politics has become totally disgusting. Our once great country in over the hill.

Crocodile tears. I'm sure Palin is sorry everybody isn't dead. The headline should read: "Innocent Americans Assassinated by Right-Wing Terrorists." This is the legacy of Bush-Cheney amplified by McCain-Palin and the Tea Baggers, with plenty of blood on the hands of McConnell, Boner, O'Really, Beck, Limbaugh and all the haters at the Fox Noise contingent. When is Obama going to call out the National Guard to secure the state of Arizona from these Right Wing Terrorists? When is the Washington Post going to hold the Tea Party, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh and the GOP accountable? Do we all have to arm ourselves to protect ourselves from the haters?

The fruits of all your hard work finally realized. Nice work, Teabaggers.

We didn't hear a peep of criticism of Palin or Angle from the Tea Party at the time of their outrageous incitements, so we don't need to hear their sniveling excuses now!

Yeah, right. The Tea for Terrorists Party has been threatening violence against our democratic system of government.

The Tea Party = Al Qaida
