White House: 'No comment' on Palin 'blood libel' debate

By Perry Bacon Jr.

The White House wants no part of the debate over former Alaska governor Sarah Palin's use of the term "blood libel."

In a press briefing on Thursday morning, White House spokesman Robert Gibbs acknowledged he watched Palin's statement on the Tucson shootings, but he wouldn't say if President Obama has. Gibbs refused give any White House perspective on Palin's remarks.

"I'm happy to speak to what the president said and how he came about saying it, but I'll let others opine on that," he said, declining to even utter Palin's name.

Palin's use in her statement of the controversial phrase "blood libel," which refers to anti-Semitic falsehoods dating back hundreds of years, inflamed her critics and drew condemnation from some Jewish groups.

Palin called efforts to attribute blame for the shooting "reprehensible," saying that "especially within hours of a tragedy unfolding, journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn."

The gunman didn't not think he would live through this. Why would you want to meet his expectation through the death penalty? He wanted to die.

Better, and less expensive, to let him rot in jail for the rest of his life.

President Obama went to give a tribute. Nobody knew that around 30,000 would show up. In fact, that particular building could not hold that many. Those 30,000 people didn't get engraved invitations. They came on their own (many several hours early) to support their own just like anybody in government (from all political persuasions)could have come if they wanted to do so.
People came out of respect for the dead and wounded.
Some people came for closure and to show that their city was not a violent one by nature.
This was NOT a planned pep rally. That kind of reaction about a 'pep rally' is just plain unwarrented nonsense as well as Monday morning quarterbacking.
Some people seem to be upset that Obama got a good reception. He said the right things for those people and the tv audience because that's what they/we wanted to hear, just as prior presidents said what needed to be said in their particular situations.
Arizona came together as one; they put flowers and notes all over the place. They needed that spotlight to show their compassion and love for one another.
Come on: Get a grip. Give credit where credit is due.

President Obama did a masterful job in his memorial speech by focusing on the individuals who were involved in the Arizona catastrophe. Why are people so quick to call him a liar when they do not know the facts? The fact that she opened her eyes for the first time voluntarily is significant. It is not the president who is faulty in this, it is the ones who can find no good in a person trying to do the right thing for the country. Hilary is just reminding us that we have terrorists who are against our country and our leaders. Certainly this flawed individual who did these unspeakable acts was against the political figure he wished to annihilate. And like any terrorist, he cared less about who got in his way.

"reprehensible" "pundits" "manufacture" "incite" "purport" "condemn" and of course "blood libel" - these words are foreign to Sarah's blog and tweets. She should go back to her comfort zone of plain talkin' and hang out that speechwriter to dry.

bulldogss:

A) Then there would be almost no blogs.

B) Would that include all the blogs that incite violence against an actual elected official, as for example...The President of the Unite States?

C) Last time I checked, Palin has not been elected to squat, and the only time she did, she quit. Maybe TLC can hire a security detail for her or she can use the same security firm as her proxy bobo Joe Miller.

You Georgia yokels are amusing in your idiocy.

I am not a politician, I am a simple constituant. What have I learned in life? That we take responsibilities for our actions. If I were to place a posting of Sarah Palin on a web site with cross hairs on it, the FEDS would be at my door within the hour and if someone were to shoot her as a result, the FEDS would rightly arrest me as well as the shooter. If these laws are correct for me, then they are also correct for Ms. Palin, she should be tried for murder.

Sarah Palin and Jesse Kelly's comments/depictions were divisive and could have contributed to the Arizona shootings and killings. Pres. Obama and others throughout history have asked for a kinder, more gentle nation. We owe it to one another to think before we use depictions and/or words of hatred. It stirs up a crowd so why think it would not incite violence in the mind of deranged individuals? Instead of placing blame on anybody, we should use this terrible tragedy to tone down our speech and actions. In the interest of our nation, we should not be defensive; just change our way of operating.

Libeling was the only thing media did as soon as bullets entered the bodies of unfortunate victims. Overwhelmingly. 5 days in a row. Now they discuss "blood libel" and how dangerous these 2 words are coming from the mouth of Palin. They never tire to fuel up controversies out of nothing. But, since it was intended, and they took the bait, it is good fun to watch. I am so happy we are so far below here in backward post-soviet country of Latvia from this level of hypocrisy and whining that goes on in the USA over the totally nonsensical stuff. But we are sure coming closer every day as lawyers and journalists get more "professional".

On other hand, have your fun while the economic REAL problems are approaching. Or, may be all this circus about who said what when and how it may harm someone really helps to get economy going, and survive the double dip with dignity. This must be democracy in action, I am watching with deep reverence. But where all the money comes from to support such lifestyle, I have no idea. "IOU" issued all over the world in form of the USD? Then one day someone will have to act to protect the value of these IOU s or ...

So here comes a need for a person of action instead of armies of whiners-so that they can continue whining:)

the LAST thing most American Jews want is for the Tuscon episode to be turned into a debate over the history of the term "blood libel". It's a debate they wouldn't win. The White House is doing exactly the wise thing by refusing to comment on it.

According to other sites the difference between Sunday and Wednesday is she opened her eyes spontaneously on Wednesday whereas on Sunday she was opening her eyes at the doctor's request. Apparently the spontaneous opening of her eyes is a significant milestone.

As tho' we held license to inform or camoflauge guilt in this matter,

any party conforming or holding contempt justified for any but the perpetrator,

is guilty of a second crime. The act to obscure guilt, even their own.

Forfeiting the right to engage and endorse prosecution of the crime,

by the act of avoiding our own guilt (of not having organized to interfere)

we simply entertain both the intent of the atheist and his supporters.

I agree that the subordination of rational justification to the

sophisticated fear of God is _ appropriate _.

And a reasonable point to consider the reference to Blood Libel.

Focusing on the scizm and division within the body,

as tho' some figure in public were - more disinterested -,

is a mistake that puts the innocent among the guilty,

and it is wrong... an evil which the body is guilty of.

It's a point to consider wisely that the conflict of blame and guilt

and the appropriation of the interest of the well constituted,

has burned unmeasurable for milleniea, already.

Prayer, reflection, and mediatation are all appropriate,

and so is the voice of the guilty among us, to confess.

Jumping the bandwagon to superiority is a false way out...

Sarah Palin has demonstrated time and again that she is a deceiving and unscrupulous woman utterly unversed in any of the needful political discourses but easily trained to utter preposterous lies and to appeal to the basest element of her audience. This mischievous “blood libel” nonsense is yet another attention seeking ploy to build her bubble reputation. The woman hardly deserves the media attention she keeps getting, and certainly doesn’t warrant White House attention. Obama has been consistently clear on this point stating a number of times when asked about her that he doesn’t think about her or her opinions. Gibbs is just following suit, which is entirely appropriate. I suppose this would change of course if by some improbable treachery Palin ends up running for president. Obama will have to cross that bridge to nowhere when he comes to it.

I thought Obama made a pretty good speech and thought/hoped this type of assault on each party would die down, ohwell. I am not an Obama supporter by the way.

The Witch hunts begin...
So now Palin comes out with a response to this tragic incident and tries to appease the "media" and democrats, but uses the words "Blood Libel" as the attack on her character. Now this also turns to more "media" and political BS (I would think the Jewish community would be happy to see the words used in a more accepting definition as just plain "falsely accused") as the media is mainly controlled by Jews and I guess Palin is now saying she is the "victim?" whose blood they want? What a crock of BS our "news?? media" puts out these days and holds on to. I watch it all as a JOKE instead of meaningful news anymore. Palin might have choosen a better wording, knowing just what low life news and politicians are these days, but as it stands and anyone with common sense can see, she was just defending her character by the onslaught of the media and democrats. In my opinion, even though I am not a Palin fan(unless she is out hunting and fishing!), she was right on "target".

let it go already, the majority voters of each sides party is no longer amused. I need to change my card to read No party affiliate.

Obama's speech was the most shameful thing he's done to date - in a long list of shameful acts.

"Gabby opened her eyes!!" WRONG. The doctor reported she opened her eyes on SUNDAY - there is video of this. For Obama to say this in his speech is a lie, and nothing more than a way for him to gin up the dopey college crowd in the audience. Then he repeated it FOUR TIMES for effect.

Furthermore, it's now being suggested that Obama may have compromised the case against the death penalty for Loughner, by saying the federal judge "just dropped by to watch Gabby", when in fact, he was on official business with the Congresswoman, which would have guaranteed the death penalty for Loughner. You'd think a president - who's supposed to be a CONSTITUTIONAL LAWYER (as he keeps telling us), would know not to say anything that might compromise an ongoing investigation.

Ask yourself: How do you think the families of the victims feel about this? How do you think they feel about the memorial for their loved ones being reduced to a Democratic campaign pep rally, replete with wolf calls, shout outs and dozens of cheers?

This shows the desperation of the Democrats, who experienced a shellacking in November. This shellacking runs DEEP - not just a Republican takeover of the House, but takeover of governors, state legislatures, city officials... all the way down to dogcatcher. The American people REJECTED the Democrat party on the largest scale in HISTORY, and the left is LIVID about this. They are looking for ANYTHING to avenge November, and will exploit any event they think will hurt Republicans and help Democrats. Witness their SHAMEFUL behavior in the wake of the Tucson shootings, as they tried to pin blame on Sarah Palin, Conservatives and the tea party.

Desperate...shameful....pathological.... pathetic. This is the face of the jerry-built, collapsing ruin that is the Democrat Party.

Reactive products of this event are unnecessary to prevent future a recurrance. Citizens' complaints must be taken frankly when presented and established mechanisms of addressing the subjects must be carried out as public officers are sworn to do. For review:

ARS 36-533 Petition for Treatment (http://www.magellanofaz.com/media/157424/3-18_form_mh-112_affadavit.pdf).

Federal Law October 22nd 1968, Pub. L. No. 90-618, 82 Stat. 1213 (also known as GCA or GCA68, and codified as Chapter 44 of Title 18, United States Code lists as a "prohibited person" with regard to firearm sales, "Anyone who has been adjudicated as a mental defective or has been committed to a mental institution." Federal law to which FFLs are bound to adhere in practice.

Pima County Sheriff Dupnick and Pima County Community College bear some serious responsibility and review for inaction in the face of ongoing incremental concern over this guy's unmitigated descent into schizophrenic or other psychotic disorder. They cannot continue to sit on those records as an answer to their oversight of critical responsibilities leading to this outcome.

The firearms department clerk at the Wal*Mart deserves a medal and a personal presentation of honor singling them out as the sole person able to exert decisive preventive action and stood up that day. Tucson needs to recognize the discretion that person exerted against all possible repercussions such an act may lead to. Dupnick should not be allowed in the same room as this under-recognized and under-compensated citizen of the day.

I am not the far right. I would have voted for Hillary over Mcain but not Obama. I grew up and still in the political circles on the democrat side with many family members in politics. I see things from the inside out not looking from the outside in. The republicans were not there because they were not invited. Only the local ones. With the media falsly blaming certain people and groups for what happened and Obama indirecly taking jabs at those groups in his speech of which I watched in full with a couple of other democrats who work for the party. I know what he did. If you dont agree with him he will attack you as it has been shown by calling the tea party tea baggers multiple times. His partisanship rate is at 8% the lowest of most presidents. That means only 18% of his bills had bipartisan support. And that went up when the tax extension were past. The first 18 months in office he total ignore the republicans which are part of our government. He didnt meet with them until the health care debate on TV and you saw the way he treated them with his comments. you might of thought it was right but as some one who is Independent and lean more right every day he is in office I thought he was out of line as the President of the greatest country in this world. He is a very dividing president.

And as far as Nanacy Pelosi, at least she showed up! What is disgraceful is reading the comments from those on the right who are bound and determined to continue the divisive rhetoric and hatred of all things Obama.
