Witness: 'He was just firing'

By David A. Fahrenthold

Steven Rayle, a Tucson doctor, had come to the event with a friend, intending to meet Giffords.

"She's pretty moderate, I like the way she's done things," he said. He said when he walked up, Giffords was standing on the sidewalk in front of the grocery store, wearing a red suit jacket and talking with two other people.

"There was no protestors. It was a very tiny crowd, maybe 20 people," he said. That crowd was mingling around the table and sidewalk, he said, under a banner with Giffords' name.

A moment later, Rayle said, he saw a young man wearing sneakers and what appeared to be navy blue sweats approach Gifford with a semi-automatic handgun raised. The man shot Giffords once in the face, he said.

The man said nothing, Rayle said. After Giffords fell, he said, a number of people near Giffords sought to flee but were trapped -- hemmed in by the table and a concrete post. The gunman fired into the crowd, he said.

"It was so close, and sort of a tight thing, there was nowhere easy to run," Rayle said. "So most of the crowd got it, you know."

"People that were there were just sitting ducks," Rayle said. "I don't think he was even aiming. He was just firing at whatever."

After a few seconds, Rayle said, the man stopped shooting and tried to flee.

"I ducked behind the concrete post, and then as he came around that, I laid on the ground as if I'd been shot," Rayle said. He said the gunman passed within five or six feet of him. When Rayle looked up, the gunman had been tackled after running just 10 feet or so. An elderly man held his torso down, with help from a Giffords staffer. Rayle held down the man's feet.

He said the police arrived within a few minutes, but ambulance crews did not arrive for 10 or 15 minutes after that. The entire time, he said, the gunman said nothing to explain his motive: Rayle said he thought he heard the man speak just once. As members of the crowd piled on to hold him down, he said, the gunman squirmed and struggled. He thought he heard the gunman say "Stop."

A former emergency-room physician, Rayle said he looked around and saw at least five people shot. One was a girl that he believed to be about nine years old. Four others, he said, appeared to have died at the scene.

American society is in decay. The honest, law abiding citizens are few&far apart. The majority of the US citizens are now wackos who are crazed, mentally ill b/c of their belief that folks living an honest life gainfully employeed are superior to these jerks who will not even consider work, eve for a job.Bet JL was attending PIMA with no cost himself.Sure would be nice to recieve $400/month for food stamps,$ for each child born into a family w/no working adults. At 1 time truely disabled were given this priviledge but those who can work, now say.."why not me?I'll stay home on my duff b/c I'm entitled".As the de- mented altered minds in decay w/ murderous thoughts to those citizens making it the American way one chose Giffords.Reaching out to give hope for her constituents(an old time street corner method before demented souls could legally purchase guns)speaking w/those who she served.Soon the deranged, psychogically satanic believers will out # honest Godly people. We are no longer the home of the free & the brave,as more of us securing ourselves in our home with a false sense of security. This fault begins the life of the indigent encouraged by free hand outs.Back to J.L..I believe an extensive background check on all folks purchasing guns should be conducted months before allowing a person to purchase a gun.As criminal/psych records required to purchase guns & ammo.If end result is person w dark/demented traits(ie, JL's rants & dark occult thoughts)which millions are turning to as a means of threatening innermost thoughts as JL's hatred of thoughts/ethics of the good citizens.Death& mayhem was directed at Gov-ment,now Governmental Leaders are targeted now.We the honest people who own firearms to hunt game to feed our family & hope not to be forced to kill in a manner to save a family member.Soon the honest will not have a means to protect lives of our families.US citizens seeking to live the "right" way, regardless of the few pennnies left after bills, often bills b/4 food will continue, but as the majority of demented, grudgful animals, use guns on innocent people for personal gain & at- tention,$,material goods, etc.Let's give them attention. After a witnessed mass murder(regardless of mental illness, take their life. The proof is there&they deserve to loose life as the murderer took more than one life.We the people MUST arm ourselves as we never know which window door or street corner we stand on.Ever lurking killers are standing beside us&are quickly outnumbering the innocent.JL's attack was filmed, victims shown..guilty as seen.Waste no time, put him to death ASAP.No $ wasted on an obviously quilty man.Put him to death, just as he killed Christina. It is time for Congress,Senate to change the laws for mass murders.Waste no time.Put them to death w/in 30 days of crime. It is now time for new laws to protect us from mass murderes.Evil is overtaking goodness, law makers protect us.

Desertdiva1, you have your facts incorrect. The "Dead to him" Democrat who worked on the Giffords campaign was not the shooter but someone else entirely. None of the details you posted relate to the alleged shooter Jared Loughner.

Upon further review of his videos, notice from this guy's youtube page that he also likes to burn American flags, plus he doesn't believe in God.

In essence, what we have here is this: The Communist Manifesto, an athiest, a flag burner, a pot smoker, a Hendrix and Doors fan and a friend who played in a band with him says he was "quite liberal."

Yet, you people say this guy is a Sarah Palin conservative.

PLEASE.

Here is Jared Lee Loughner's youtube page. Check out his favorite books:
http://www.youtube.com/user/Classitup10
The Communist Manifesto
Mein Kampf

Also, a friend of his in high school, Caitie Parker, said Loughner was "left wing, quite liberal," was a "pot head," and listened to music like "Hendrix, the Doors, Anti-Flag." See the link:
http://www.businessinsider.com/woman-who-says-she-went-to-school-with-alleged-shooter-says-he-met-giffords-in-2007-2011-1

And many of you blame Palin for what this guy did? He was a liberal. There is not an ounce of evidence out there that I have seen showing that this guy was a conservative, listened to Palin, was mad about health care or that he went to tea party rallies. You are all just listening to left-wing hacks out there and running with it without a scinitilla of basis.

I cannot believe you all would try to make political points on the day so many people were killed and injured. Even as diehard liberals, I thought you were better than this. I figured many of you would at least wait to get the facts, be classy and not jump jump to baseless conclusions. You just "assumed" this guy was a conservative who listened to Palin when it is NOT true.

I certainly don't blame liberals like you, Barack Obama, Howard Dean, or any other liberal out there, for what this guy who appeared to be a liberal did. He was crazy. He needed medciine. He seriously must have been schizphrenic or severaly bipolar with psychotic/mixed features.

This is what you all need to understand: A very sick person did this unspeakable act. It wasn't a liberal or conservative act--and you shouldn't try to rationalize the irrationality of the act of a mentally ill peson.

to AnnnsThoughts: I think the main thing this guy has in common with the anarchist leaning Tim McVeigh is that he too had a fictional character with the same name do an almost identical act PRIOR to his own dastardly act. Tim McVeigh followed in the footsteps of Tom McVey, a fictional terrorist character in a best selling book, and Jared followed in the footsteps just one and one half days after a twenty-something year old Jared on Grey's Anatomy went on a shooting rampage and had dozens of victims. Unstable, paranoid people may see these characters as signs to emulate their behavior and while liberals seem to be more angry with Rep. Giffords as of late as compared with conservatives and moderates, who have been acknowledging her independence from the more liberal elements of her party this past year and especially this past week, it is just as ridiculous to accuse them of intentionally motivating this nut as it is of you to blame Sarah Palin. "Blueboy"s recent rant may not have inspired the shooter, but he expressed much more hate than Tea Party supporters who hoped she would not be re-elected last November and had made no attempts to kill her since their close finish long ago. We only show our prejudice when we jump to conclusions prematurely and most comments demonstrate this idea clearly.

When Jesse Helms suggested that President Clinton was not welcome in North Carolina where he was not liked and "people had guns" the season on D(d)emocrats was officially open, no permit needed. Having been closed since the '70s thinning the herd would again become the watchword. Unfortunately a great opportunity was missed to have the Capitol police arrest Senator Helms and send a shiver through his like. He could than face a jury of his peers and explain why his statement wasn't an illegal threat to a sitting President.

The yammering class will have a lot more difficulty now in getting the cat back into the bag. A good start was made, however, by the Sheriff of Tuscon. I'm hoping he is not alone.

Okay, people who are trying to say that "BoyBlue" on DailyKos is Jared Loughner need to think a little bit more about this. All of the news reports suggest that Loughner is a 22 year old. The poster on DailyKos said he personally met with Giffords to urge her to run for a newly opened congressional district in 2002. Loughner would have been about 13 then. How could that possibly make him "BoyBlue"?

She ought to be tried for treason; at the very least run back to Alaska so she and her inbred family can hunt helpless animals for food (it's 2011- there aren't any freaking grocery stores in Wasilla?) The fact that this happened in McCains backyard is ironic. He introduced this peon to the world and he should be held accountable.

I noticed that one person wanted to know where and how this nut got a gun. Will we live in one of the nut states that gives any nut the right to carry a loaded cancelled weapon? In this nut state you can buy a weapon without registering without a waiting period just buy it load it strap it on your legal.

The Republican governor and controlled senate and house passed and signed into law the right for these nuts to carry a loaded cancelled weapon.

The old west towns had it right; you must leave your guns at the edge of town, but not this nut state. You can legally carry a cancelled loaded gun that you can buy without registering the weapon. Real Sharpe elected officials.

Desertdiva1, could you advise where you have found that information?

It is being reported that the shooter had an extensive online record indicating anti-government views, advocating an alternative currency, and evidencing an obsession with the Constitution, all positions favored by the right wing.

(Which seems a lot more consistent with what happened, although it is hard to say in the initial hours following such an event.)

If people bother to research the facts they will learn that the shooter has worked for Rep Giffords re-election campaign and is a left wing Democrat. He posted two days ago on DailyKos that Rep Giffords was "dead to him". He was angry because she voted against Nancy Pelosi for speaker. No immigration issue responsible, no "right wing hatred" stirred this sick individual. He belongs fully to the left as an anarchist. Now the question to ask is why after reading his post on DailyKos did no bother to contact the authorities?

Mr. Kelly's spokesman today would only say that he couldn't see any connection between their campaign events and the shooting.

Loughner shot her IN THE FACE at point blank range. How brutal! I truly wonder if she'll survive the night. If she lives, how much of her head remains after a gun shot through her brain. I'm very saddened for the others who died, and for those who are in critical condition fighting for their lives.

Even back in March of last year, Palin supporter Elizabeth Hasselbeck was calling Palin's "crosshairs" website that targeted Rep. Giffords "despicable". She said it looked like "an Al Qaida Christmas card".

Let's hope she makes a full recovery.

Sara Palin's map with targets can be seen at http://twitpic.com/3o7jnn

Gabriella is marked on that map as a target.

This was an attempted assassination of a US Congressional Representative. Its politically motivated. Its not a random act of violence. Anyone else on that map, marked with a gunsight as a "target" needs to be very, very careful.

Sara Palin should be called before the House of Representatives to explain her behavior. I want to see her stand before Congress and attempt to justify this map.

How did this psycho get a hold of a gun? Thanks one helluva lot NRA. I guess the shooter was "law abiding citizen" excercising his 2nd Amendment, right?

Guess what the Republicans are going to do because of this latest shooting tragedy?

Nothing of course.

I wish the Congresswoman and every else injured during the shooting all the best and a speedy recovery.

The GOP are such hypocrites.... So, how patriotic it is that Sarah Palin lowers her sights - after a victim is shot!!!

The doctor is quoted elsewhere as saying it took 30 minutes for the first ambulance to arrive. The public safety response needs to be looked at as well.

Representative Gabrielle Giffords was one of many Democrats that appeared on a map of the US on Sarah Palin's political action committee with cross hairs on them. It was scrubbed today!IMO this shooting is a result of people who post rhetoric like palin did.Isn't she moving there now,is she looking for this congress women's seat. Why else was it removed so fast from her site. I hope someone had a screen shot saved as anyone hurt or killed as the 9 year old was could go after her for inciting people to do violence. JMO

Jared Lee?

Big F'ing Surprise, huh?

Shot a 9 year old girl at point blank range...

A real hero. A real "American Patriot," for sure.

John Boehner recently said that "It's not up to me to tell them what to think" referring to a birther who disrupted the reading of the Constitution. So he condones and allows this type of rhetoric to go unchecked. There in lies the problem. If Republicans in Congress condemned some of the out of control rhetoric from even members in Congress, perhaps this wouldn't have happened. Instead, Republicans have for the past two years allowed members of Congress to disrespect the President, they have allowed right wing radio "entertainers" to spew their hateful rhetoric, they have allowed our country to be subjected to a constant 24/7 barrage of fear, scare, smear, hate and racism to go unchecked. They take no responsibility for what has been said over the past two years and now they want to express outrage and sorrow. Too late now, the damage has been done.

As a Tucson resident and supporter of Rep Giffords, I fear that this tragedy is the result of the especially toxic political atmosphere in our state. While the gunman may be mentally ill, the vitriolic content of political discourse about patriotism, gun control(we have almost none here), and widespread anti-government rhetoric may have incited him to commit such a terrible act. We must forget the others who died, including a 9/yo and a respected federal judge.

so she was shot in the face with the report that it was point blank.
the doctor said it went through her head.

she is fighting for her life.
but her life will never be the same.

that's what a head shot does.

i hope she doesn't end up brain dead.

This incident is what the "HOT" anti-government, anti-Obama, rhetoric which has so pervaded the body politic since President Obama came into office. These rich radio and cable demagogues make inflammatory statements, which also rile the "KOOKS" always circling nearby. So to those in the national media who have become intimidated into silence from not criticizing these flame throwers this is an example that words have consequences, and sometimes they're deadly..
