GOP freshmen help derail Patriot Act extension

By Scott Butterworth

Updated 9:45 p.m.

Nine Eight House Republican freshmen and three inaugural members of the Tea Party Caucus voted against a proposed extension of three Patriot Act provisions Tuesday night, blocking the measure from passage under fast-track rules.

The House clearly backed the measure, voting 277 to 148 to extend the provisions, and most Republicans stuck by their leadership and supported the extension. But enough defected, joined by most Democrats, to keep the measure seven votes shy of the two-thirds majority required for passage under the fast-track procedure.

The House is likely to bring the extensions back up before the end of the month under regular procedures, when a simple majority would suffice to send it to the Senate.

Attention immediately swung to whether House members sympathetic to the tea party had decided the matter, especially after Rep. Dennis J. Kucinich (D-Ohio) said Monday that the vote would be "the tea party's first test."

The Republicans who voted no Tuesday night included Roscoe G. Bartlett (Md.), Paul Broun (Ga.) and Walter B. Jones (N.C.), all of whom were original members of the House Tea Party Caucus when it was founded last summer.

And nine eight GOP freshmen also voted no: Justin Amash (Mich.), Michael G. Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Christopher P. Gibson (N.Y.), Tom Graves (Ga.), Randy Hultgren (Ill.), Raul R. Labrador (Idaho), Robert Schilling (Ill.), David Schweikert (Ariz.) and Rob Woodall (Ga.). (Updated: Graves was actually elected to office last June and thus is not an official freshman.)

The full list of House Republicans who voted no is after the jump.

Justin Amash (Mich.), Roscoe G. Bartlett (Md.), Rob Bishop (Utah), Paul Broun (Ga.), John Campbell (Calif.), John J. Duncan Jr. (Tenn.), Michael G. Fitzpatrick (Pa.), Christopher P. Gibson (N.Y.), Tom Graves (Ga.) Dean Heller (Nev.), Randy Hultgren (Ill.), Timothy V. Johnson (Ill.), Walter B. Jones (N.C.), Jack Kingston (Ga.), Raul R. Labrador (Idaho), Connie Mack (Fla.), Kenny Marchant (Tex.), Tom McClintock (Calif.), Ron Paul (Tex.), Denny Rehberg (Mont.), Phil Roe (Tenn.), Dana Rohrabacher (Calif.), Robert Schilling (Ill.), David Schweikert (Ariz.), Rob Woodall (Ga.), Don Young (Alaska).

Democrat this Republican that; do any of you really think anything has changed under anyone of them. They are all beholding to money, period. Big money lobbyists, corporations, bankers, financiers, oil companies, and Middle East Dictators; like Mubarak! Winning an election takes big money! We worship the popular rich people in this country. We forget that to get rich you have to be evil. Willing to crush your opponent in any way possible legal or not! But we do not think that much into it. We like the idea of being rich and live through the rich. Why shows like houses or cribs of the rich and famous are so popular. We do not care they declared corporate bankruptcy several times in the past, causing little old ladies and families to lose everything they had invested with Mr. Popular, who walks away with his millions safely tucked away. We also ignore his terrible comb over. Follow his every move on TV drooling over the aspect of being like him. I don’t blame anyone we all started early in the school yard. Remember when the bullies and obnoxious were our favorites. The popular ones elected to the student council or homecoming king and queen. Rich, good looking and make fun of the less fortunate and we loved them. It has not changed! We idolize the rich and popular as adults as well. Not the hard working truck driver or police officer, boring! And so that is who we elect as our representatives. The rich and popular. The fact they would sell their mother for fifty bucks goes unnoticed. The fact they call you names like stupid and fool behind your back is of no importance. The fact not one elected official in the last seventy years gave a damn about the people who voted them into office is of no concern. The fact they lie to you is of no relevance. The fact they tell you what you want to hear and then vote the complete opposite goes completely unnoticed. Republican or Democrat makes no difference! They are in it for the money and they know you are too stupid to figure it out so they don’t care. Any doubters are welcome to check it out. Bet you would be surprised! Bet you would be disgusted with how many spend four to six years in office without voting on a single bill, but put millions in their campaign coffers. Yea that is right they get paid to abstain as well as vote against the people. But we don’t have the time to notice! Government by the people for the people assumes we pay attention. And we know what ass-u-me gets you!

Any real Patriot would be ill this passed in the first place. Taking away our rights out of fear is ridicules. Hysteria leads to all kinds of bad things like lynch mobs, McCarthy Senate hearings, and legalized torture! This is NOT American or Patriotic in any way shape or form. This stupidity parading around as a “Patriot” Act is obscene and for cowards only! Already the abuses are growing. Sell drugs be labeled a terrorist and go to Gitmo without due process, without notification of arrest. Just whisked off the street and disappear for three years! Soon it will be anybody who speaks out against the Government. Hey traitor and terrorist what did you say about Odumbo it ’s off to gitmo for you, see you in three years. Though after being water boarded for three years you will no longer remember your name; when they release you to oops wrong person. The founding fathers are spinning in their graves over this unconstitutional travesty. Just like the dozens of mistaken addresses on raids leading to dozens of innocent home owners being gunned down by mistake. Just recently it was a grandmother, a little old lady shot thirty, or more times when she pulled a gun on the unannounced intruders that kicked in the wrong door. Why due process was so important to our forefathers. A police state like Hitler’s is not what they wanted. But what the Patriot Act gives our government! Think very hard before you praise this hysteria driven loss of all your freedoms.

The left wing media wants liberal leaning Americans to believe that Tea Party is about supporting mainstream neo-cons and racism.
The right wing media wants called conservative Americans to believe that all of the police state takeover is to protect us from terrorism and the commie takeover.
When will people realize that both parties are completely controlled by international banksters. It's all an illusion folks. Originally the modern Tea Parties (before being hijacked by through neo-con propagandist) was about trying to educate people about the left-right paradigm.

Let's not get carried away here. The only reason why this happen is because they probably saw the Democrats (as big a rat as the Republicans) supporting it. They do that out of inertia not common sense or decency. However, this article left out the most important part: the portions of that abomination that were struck down. And all I want to know is, do we still get sexually molested at the airport?

USA PATRIOT ACT = Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act

So now, we are not going to be UNITED and STRONG, and we are NOT GOING TO PROVIDE ANY TOOLS REQUIRED TO INTERCEPT AND OBSTRUCT TERRORISM.
Oh my God, we are living in unprotected country and yes I know, there are some of you praying for attacks to happen, which I am sure our Government (or those who pull strings in our Government) can arrange in no time to happen.

Let me get this straight;
Self called Republicans call this Constitution down toilet and freedom stealing act a "USA PATRIOT Act", but the Health Care Reform Act that suppose to create health insurance for all Americans, they cal it "Job Kiling Act".

PATRIOT ACT = Uniting and Strengthening America by Providing Appropriate Tools Required to Intercept and Obstruct Terrorism Act; (WOW, they are so creative and hard working day and nights when it comes to arresting people, deporting people, detaining people, taking anything away from people, but when it comes to giving the same health care they get from government to the rest of America............OH BOY!!! there are too many pages to read and no time to read it, its job killing, repeal it, socailism, communism, welfare state, and God knows what else they come up with)

Left-wing zealots? Freedom-loving libertarians including the great Dr. Ron Paul, led the charge against this Bill of Rights-shredding abomination.

Maybe you're just a sucker who bought into the nonsense that increasing the surveillance police state's power is "critical" to "protect" us from "terrorism".

Quite to the contrary, the PATRIOT Act ENSHRINES terrorism - terrorism by the state.

"Those who would trade essential liberties for temporary security deserve neither liberty nor security." - Benjamin Franklin

"It is the duty of every patriot to defend his country from its government." - Patrick Henry

You left-wing zealots seem to forget that there was a left-wing supermajority in Congress, yet the Patriot Act was never challenged. Obama has done nothing to remove any facet of it......in fact, government spying and "police state" policy is stronger now than ever. We have warrantless wiretaps, warrantless cell phone monitoring, and the TSA thinks it is the Gestapo. Oh, and NOW the TSA will be unionized......that will make them worse than ever!

Our great President is doing a splendid job of rescuing this nation from the inept clutches of the GOP who idly sat and watched Bush and Cheney destroy it along with their Wall Street backers. Fools like you don't give a darn about that, you just hate that Black family in the White House. admit it. President Obama cannot remove the evil created by the GOP in just three years. Slowly he is getting around to it all. So if you'd just shut your ignorant mouth, open your mind and look for the truth, and ..... tell the truth for once. you'll find there are no left wing zealots behind the GOP Patriot Act, only left wing patriots who truly do love their country. Maybe you need to learn to READ. I never said I supported this crap under Bush in ANY way at all.
What I was pointing out is that the far-left had every opportunity to get rid of the horrid thing but never even tried. The right-wing had ZERO power to stop them. But Obama was high on his health-care-reform mania, foaming at the mouth to get it passed, even if it meant bribing his own party members to do it (which he did).

Left-wing zealots blame everything on Bush but never accept that their own party in power has made things worse.
Government spying on American citizens is WORSE now than it was under Bush.
The TSA is WORSE than anything under Bush.
Gitmo is STILL OPEN.
We're STILL in Afghanistan.
Unemployment STILL SUCKS, despite Obama giving hundreds of billions of dollars to RICH PEOPLE.
And Obama let the GOP tax cuts for the RICH remain in place.

And despite all that, and so much more that is worse now than it was under Bush, the leftists continue to blame Bush for everything while they give their Messiah Obama a free pass to do all the same things, or worse.

How in the world did you ever interpret what I wrote as "under Bush it was patriotism"?!?
I get the feeling you are a blind far-left sheep spitting at anything you feel is even remotely from the right. I wanted Bush OUT. But now, I want Obama OUT even MORE, because under Obama everything is going to hell here in America. Our basic freedoms are being taken away one by one. Congress has been the most corrupt in history (both sides of the aisle). So far, it is way too soon to know how bad or good the tea party folks will be. I am willing to give them a chance before I criticize them......partly because they can't possibly be any worse than Obama, Reid and Pelosi have been.
WAKE UP!!!

Conservatives should be just as opposed to a police state as liberals. Nothing could be more un-American than spying on your neighbor and having a secret police force that works in concert with AT&T and Verizon to eavesdrop on your conversations, emails and tweets.

I have also never understood why Republicans so strongly supported torture of criminal suspects. Since the abolition of slavery and Jim Crow laws, our judiciary was considered a model for the world.

As the saying goes, even a broke clock is right two times a day. The Tea Party guys got it right for a change. I wish the rest of Congress would stand up for the Constitution every once in a while.

Ha! I finally have some respect for the Republican party. They didn't pull a "lemming vote" (where every GOP member votes identical) as they usually do.

I can't respect a party that always votes the same. That means either you are clones of each other or you never vote your conscience.

Hooray for freshman! And I'm a Democrat!

I can't believe that those wackjob Tea Partiers were actually on the right side of this issue. The Patriot Act is a civil rights abomination, but the majority of politicos are afraid to vote against it for fear of appearing "weak on national defense and terrorism". That the Tea Party actually said no to the re-authorization is nothing short of a miracle.

Posted by: gotoran | February 8, 2011 8:25 PM
I agree there are a few whack jobs that joined the Tea party, most are not. Remember the tea party is not the republicrat party of old. all though all all of those jumped on board after the early reports were in the last election.
And this was NOT the first test this was the second. The TEA party wanted to repeal the health bill not the R's. The R's wanted to "fix it" read make it even better for the insurance companies
Some food for thought on that subject:
Insurance does not keep the cost of anything down it only adds to the cost. If the premiums do not bring in more than the total cost of care provided + plus the cost of agents, office space, paperpushers(salarys + bennies)+lawsuits + profit for stock holders. They are then losing money. They do not and will not do that.
When you buy insurance all you are doing is gambling that the "house" will lose. and it occasionaly does. Just like the "houses" in Vagas ocasionally pay a big winner and many get a little. Yet most go home with much less in their pocket than they went with.

If you change that to *some* Republicans, then you're right. The mainstream of the party wants the abomination made permanent.
