Obama holds Silicon Valley summit with tech tycoons

By Perry Bacon Jr.

Updated 10:26 p.m.
WOODSIDE, Calif. -- President Obama traveled Thursday night to northern California for an evening meeting with a group of Silicon Valley chief executives, among them Mark Zuckerberg, the founder of Facebook, and Steve Jobs, the ailing head of Apple.

The closed-door session with 12 technology leaders was held at the home of John Doerr, a partner at the major Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers. Others in the room include Oracle founder and chief executive Larry Ellison, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings and Twitter CEO Dick Costolo.

Although some in the business world have had an often-tense relationship with Obama, such as the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the president has been popular in Silicon Valley.

Obama attended a major fundraiser last October at the home of Google executive Marissa Mayer, and he met with Jobs on that same swing. Eric Schmidt, Google's executive chairman, campaigned for Obama in 2008 and has served as an informal adviser on economic issues since then. And Doerr, a longtime Democratic donor, has served on the president's Economic Recovery Advisory Board for the last two years.

White House officials said Thursday night's meeting was mainly to discuss Obama's innovation initiatives. He has promised to fund tax credits for research and development; to reform the bogged-down patent system; and to blanket the country with high-speed wireless-Internet connections.

Others attending the session were John Hennessy, the president of Stanford University; Carol Bartz, president and CEO, Yahoo!; John Chambers, CEO and chairman, Cisco Systems; Art Levinson, chairman and former CEO, Genentech; and Steve Westly, managing partner and founder, The Westly Group.

So? What was the purpose, to show he likes technology? Big deal. Tons of money on what could've been a conference call or presidential campaign dinner; in other words not on our dime.
Are we going to bail out Facebook? It doesn't need it more than any of the others we bailed out, apparently.

Perhaps Google could pay its fair share of taxes. Liars and cheats talking to the liar in chief on how to screw tax payers.

We are broke and Obama needs to park Air Force One and use tele-conferencing.

He along with his union thugs are bankrupting America.

The Democrats are just THUGS.

Nothing gets under the skin of conservatives more than the President meeting with highly intelligent innovative people. This stuff does not sit well with their Tea Party ditch diggers constituents. "Look at'em talk'in bout that Intertube and puters!!!"

EarlC writes...Unlike Bush who was not only AWOL in the Natioanl Guard and the White House, Obama is a full-time President.

Bush served as a fighter pilot in the Texas Air National Guard.

What did you do in the war, Daddy? Where was Joe Biden during the war? How about Bill Clinton?

Full time? Sure, when he isn't playing golf or shooting hoops.

Also, you should perhaps learn how to spell.

So Obama's gonna ask the techies how to create new websites whose main purpose is to host advertisements that will entice people who are way over their credit limit to buy new crap. Now this is really going to bring jobs back to the U.S.

I wonder if he gave them the "comes a time when you've made enough money" oration??? That kinda sums up his real views on innovation, doesn't it?

jhouse770, how can it be a secret meeting if everyone knows about it? Were you looking for the video recording, a transcript, and an explanation as to how your invitation got lost in the mail?

Wait a minute! Pres Bo went to Woodside, California to meet with the billionaires?
Did he tell them? You all have made enough money. Give all of your excess money to me and let me spend it on the issues that are important to me.

Another showy geek-a-thon. I wonder if Obama asked any of the CEOs about their outsourcing strategies or how he plans to to create more American jobs, say in manaufacturing? It would be nice to know if he is actually interested in how these strategies are impacting the average high-tech worker and Silicon Valley morale, but i bet he was just interested in asking Mark Z, about how he could find the switch to turn off the internet. *sigh*

President Obama and all Democrats in 2012

Obama has nothing in common with these people. They created wealth and he is destroying it.
He never ran a hot dog stand, or cut a check for any employee. A true died in the wool big government man, schooled by a communist in Hawaii and by Saul Alinsky's Rules for Radicals, Obama is the worst president we have ever had, without exception.
Read Charles Krauthammer today and see how the flim flam man Obama is trying to con the American People with his Louis XV proposals.

Lets see how it must go whenever Obama meets with business people...
Obama: "Can you explain free enterprise? to me again." "I know the enterprise is; that's a space ship. And free is what everything the government gives away is, but I don't get free enterprise."

The former VP can have secret meetings with oil co. executives and it is a grand conspiracy, according to the media and the President's supporters.
Yet he can secretly meet with the largest media companies in the world and gets a pass.

What hypocrisy.

Obama does know that they are increasingly in control of the flow of information to the average American, as the power of the old guard network TV and print fades.

Obama can push technological innovations until the cows come home, but if the final products of American innovations still end up being mass produced in China or elsewhere overseas, that still won't create enough domestic jobs for the millions of Americans!

Perhaps the President could suggest to California Lt. Governor Gavin Newsom that Gordon Getty; should pay the overdue $6,440,000 bill at MACDONALD BANK … after MACDONALD BANK earned the Getty Oil Company shareholders … $4,000,000,000. The President could also discuss the $22,000,000,000; Getty war crimes lawsuit … with Gordon Getty -- which is going forward in Washington.
An employee at the Getty owned Pierre Hotel in New York City wondered why there were so many Germans being hired and staying at The Pierre during World War II. He called the FBI and the FBI charged J.P. Getty with Espionage, FBI File 100.1202, June 26, 1940. 43,000 people were killed in the UK while J. Paul Getty was in Berlin still shipping oil to Hitler five months before Pearl Harbor; December 7, 1941. The mother of J.P. Getty was German. 2003 documents declassified by UK Warfare Ministry reveal that in Oct. 1941 the pro-Nazi Jean Paul Getty employed and lodged Nazis at his Pierre Hotel in New York City; Nazis who were involved in spying on and sabotaging Allied Forces’ war production plants. As aristocrats with treasures of art were executed -- beginning in 1933 -- with the outbreak of war; Getty assiduously added to his vast collection with the Nazis. The Rembrandt of Marten Looten hangs in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The Gainsborough of Christie purchased in 1938 is at The Getty Museum in Los Angeles.

Obama is a disaster by any measurement. People like you , who live with their heads in the sand, blind to anything remotely connected to reality, are what make America a very sick country.

...all these teck companies need to set up a welfare fund..as robotics and supercomputers take more and more jobs away ;;well people still need to eat and live so someone has to support them..so set up a fund where those knocked out of work can draw a pay check,,afterall robots just need electricty..if not then expect the american people ""to walk like an egyptian ""also we the people need to nationalism all coporations and reverse the horror of us alwways at their mercy..rather lets have then work for us and the betterment of humanity..as they were originally charted to do..not be given human status //or a living id as they have become ;;at the pearl of humanity..people then can do social things like get a check but work for the community ie tutor kids,,clean up neighboorhoods,,parks streams rivers etc ..if not we then need to get rid and excute non working/non productive members of society;;so folks what is it..nationalism copors..or stop all births and rid the population of unemployed people;;

Transcript of Obama tech meeting in Silicon Valley February 17, 2011
John Doerr: Hi everybody, thanks for coming. I just wanted to start out and remind everybody here that you all work for me.
All: Understood
Obama: Thanks John, we all know who’s in charge, but I need you folks to do something for me. I’ve got figure out how to turn this economy around by 2012. Or you’re all going to be listening to stories about Moose hunting the next time you want to meet with the President.
John Chambers: Don’t look at me. I voted for the old guy last time. Didn’t think it would turn out this way.
Steve Westly: But I want to tell you about my approach to business, based upon my eBay experience
Doerr: Yes Steve, we all know it’s better to be lucky than good, but that’s not going to turn the economy around by 2012
Eric Schmidt: Look, these guys don’t know what they’re talking about. What we need to do is open source government. Instead of hiring case workers to manage welfare and unemployment offices, let’s just ask users to submit ideas about how these underutilized resources can be used better. For example, let’s sell advertising on the backs of shirts of welfare moms and the unemployed, and then have them pick up trash on the freeways.
Obama: Hmm, I don’t know Eric…
Dick Costolo: @Woodside mansion. Pasta delicious!
Schmidt: OK. Another idea. Instead trying to figure this out ourselves, let’s get on an advisory board of a country that’s working well, say, like Sweden. We listen to their ideas, copy them, and then give the ideas away for free. And we sell advertising on the backs of shirts of government workers.
Steve Jobs: Yes, Schmitty, I know that’s how it works for you. But I think we really need to revolutionize the way this country works. Like what if we combine the prescription drug program, FEMA, and the National Endowment for the Arts, into one thing. We’ll call it the iPFArt. Yes, that’s it…
Carol Bartz: $#@! You boys always think you know the answer. What the country needs is tough love. Let’s cut, cut, cut back the federal employees until we have one thing left that works. Who says we need to grow the economy anyhow? This whole growth thing is over-rated. Why, while I was CEO of Autodesk, for the first 10 years, I turned it from a billion dollar company into a billion dollar company. Nobody complained. They just learned to accept the status quo. That’s what this country needs. To just accept it!
Dick Costolo: cant believe i missed the office 2nite. steve carrell ROCKS!
Larry Ellison: Barack. The problem is you are measuring the economy with someone else’s numbers. Instead you should be thinking like Kirk and the Kobayashi Maru. If you don’t like the rules of the game, the change the rules. Instead of publishing numbers about GDP, you need to be measuring the economy with different metrics—how many new jobs there are in bankruptcy law, increases in yacht sales, whate

Unlike Bush who was not only AWOL in the Natioanl Guard and the White House, Obama is a full-time President. He is trying his best to enjoine everyone in trying to fix what is broken in this country. All that the Republicans are doing is destructive to the USA. Republicans will not be happy until they have all the money and own as many weapons as they can. I guess when they get all the money, they'll need the guns to try to keep it. GREED is what it is ll about for these lowlifes.
