VIDEO: 'Foolish' college kids 'just vote their feelings,' New Hampshire speaker says

By Peter Wallsten

A Washington Post story Monday on GOP efforts to push new voting laws is getting a lot of attention, largely because of some controversial comments about college students by the new speaker of the New Hampshire state House. Speaker William O'Brien called college kids voting behavior "foolish" and ridiculed them for voting "liberal." "That's what kids do," he said.

Here is the full video of his remarks, to a Rochester, N.H., tea party group, captured on video by a state Democratic Party staffer. His comments on voting start at about the 8:30 mark.

Here's a full written statement released by O'Brien's office to the Post:

"New Hampshire, unlike most states, allows for same day registration of voters. This coupled with a lax definition of residency creates an environment in which people may be claiming residency in multiple locations.  Thereforethere is need for a clear definition of residency that should apply to everyone.

"The vast majority of people agree with the principle 'one man, one vote.' We encourage all individuals, regardless of age, to be part of the political process. However, any one person should only be able to claim residency in one location - that's common sense.  We must protect the integrity of the ballot process. Our goal is to tighten the statute.

"This is not an idea targeting any particular political party or ideology - it's simply about getting back to the basic principles of ensuring residency and protecting integrity of our ballot system."

Lisaaitken is your typical, dead-from-the neck-up ditto head who feeds off the anal crumbs falling from the fathead Rush Limbaugh's reeking anal orifice. Typical, 1950s hogwash hinting that anyone who doesn't buy into their dead 18th century philosophy is somehow liberal socialists with--as her fat, swilly, sour drug addicted hero Phlegmbaugh has repeated ad nauseum (literally) for going on three decades now--"young skulls full of mush".

Mush? What in the hell does he call these brain dead morons in the Tea Party who think that somehow, Barack Obama was born as a consequence of a dark Jihadist plot to establish a President in the United States who would bring about a world Caliphate. If you want mush sister, look no farther than within your own stinking little tribe of bigots and rednecks who think books are for starting big bonfires, you smelly little Nazi pig.

College students and those who don't have drivers licenses or state issued ID's need to come out in force in our next election. I don't have a lot of money, but I'll help someone get a state issued ID so they can vote if they pass the same kind of legislation here that they are trying to do in so many other states(they are trying in my state). If everyone that believes voting is a right and not a privilege helps those who are disenfranchised by these Republicans to get a state issued ID, we can make sure to get enough turnout to vote these turkeys out. They don't respect your right to vote and won't listen to your voice- they don't need to be there.

Funny. When I was in college, I voted Republican. Then I grew up and never did that again.

Why do Republicans hate Freedom and Democracy?

Wake up all college students as now the repubs think you are to dumb to vote. Please vote and vote for the democrats before the repubs take away your right to vote. I am sure the student with the worst grades is smarter than any T-BAGGER.

The GOP is on a national campaign to eliminate Democratic voters. Do away with unions, college kids voting, poor people shouldn't be allowed, Acorn, etc. etc. Couple that with Citizens v. United which allows corporations to elect representative, throw in the Koch brothers, funding of tea baggers, etc. etc. and I think you start to get the picture. If they can squash the little guy (middle class) then they will control all. It is time for the working class people to rise up at the election polls and tell the GOP that this country is not for just the RICH!!!!

Don't know what planet some commenters on this are on. College kids vote 'liberal' because most college professors and the overwhelming orthodoxy on college campuses is LIBERAL. Plus, college kids pay no taxes. So they don't yet know the feeling of having incompetent bureaucrats confiscating your hard-earned cash and then wasting it on their pet projects and just kicking the can down the road instead of facing the serious economic consequences of bloated debt/deficits.
MOST people come to understand this when they grow up and join the real world. Politics is not just about good intentions and being NICE to people

Where to begin! College kids (interestingly enough, when they are in college they are "kids", when they are on the battlefield they are young men and women) DO pay taxes- they pay sales taxes, they pay motor vehical taxes, gasoline taxes- and if they earn enough income tax (the money is withheld from their checks, even from on-campus student jobs)

as for voting liberal, it's as Steven Colbert put so well- reality has a strong liberal bias.

What is wrong with the mediocre anti-intellectual right that they constantly talk about American ingenuity and exceptinalism- failing to recognize the techonlogical, agricultural, scientific and sociological advances were largely achieved in these bastions of liberalism- that's because innovation, creativity and progress require open-minds not already married to conservative dogma or strait-jacketed by regional/religious ideologies.

University "Kids" read more, analyze more, travel more, interact with a broader spectrum of diverse people than your average 44 year-old wage-slave whose world exist almost exclusively of paying the bills and raising a family.

As for being "nice," one thing that college students have much less of then older folk is cynacism.

State Speaker William O'Brien (R) and other morons like him are NOT what made New Hampshire great. In fact, MY family is one that was multi-generational like many who were forced out by obnoxious and wealthy politicians that have no God-given sense at all.

What Speaker O'Brien and even Jeanne Shaheen, the state governor fail to acknowledge is that there is a strong and growing population of college students that are MIDDLE-AGED ADULTS! These persons care for elderly parents while also putting their kids through college.

This growing population normally votes relatively conservatively.

So, while these geniuses make blanket statements to the press representing MY home state of New Hampshire, let me make myself perfectly clear in helping to eradicate any rumors that people from New Hampshire are imbeciles like O'Brien and Shaheen.

New Hampshire's current administrators in Concord might want to take that long walk from their offices during lunch break down to the mental health hospital and get some free counseling to help them grasp what is reality in 2011 and to stop living in their delusions.

O'Brien needs to stop living in the dark ages of the 1950's and get out once in awhile to meet and exceed the highly technological era of United States politics - and quit embarrassing the hell out of me and my state!

The Granite State is similarly home to many part time Florida residents, but somehow, the GOP doesn't go after stopping that vote. i.e. its not about the principle, its about winning.

Can you say irony? The GOP's entire platform depends on people voting their feelings rather than thinking (climate change denial, abortion, gay rights, etc., etc.). The GOP's tool box is just one big set of one-liners invented to cause knee-jerk reactions in constituents.

On the other hand, college students, who probably had to do some thinking to get where they are, would seemingly be a demographic most likely to analyze their choices and vote according to logic. Is it any surprise they vote as liberals? www.killingmother.blogspot.com.
