Mark Felt Is Deep Throat?

Everyone be careful to avoid being stampeded by people saying they knew all along that Deep Throat was Mark Felt.

Actually, his name has been near the top of the list for a while. Tim Noah in Slate gives a good rundown of the recent flurry of Felt speculation. The Post's 1997 retrospective on Watergate mentioned him briefly. Washingtonian has a good summary of Deep Throat speculation that features Felt prominently. Scroll to the bottom and see what Felt told reporter Jack Limpert in 1974. Limpert asked Felt directly if he was D.T., and Felt didn't exactly say no. Felt said, "I don't think it will ever be resolved whether it was an actual person or a composite."

Felt has been fingered as D.T. by Ronald Kessler, a former Post reporter. Howie reported in February the results of an informal poll/contest, conducted by Editor & Publisher (apparently it sampled its readership), showing that only William Rehnquist topped Felt among suspected Throats. That was probably because of rumors that D.T. was dying, and Rehnquist had been suffering from such poor health. The poll results:

Rehnquist: 15%. Mark Felt: 8%. Fred Fielding: 6%. Henry Kissinger: 6%. L. Patrick Gray: 5%. George H. W. Bush: 4%. Gerald R. Ford: 3%. Pat Buchanan: 2%. Alexander Butterfield: 2%. Bob Dole: 2%. Leonard Garment: 2%. Alexander Haig: 2%. Diane Sawyer: 2%. Ben Stein: 2%. Pope John Paul
II: 2%.

A May 1, 1977 story by Woodward and Scott Armstrong mentioned Felt in passing: In a tape, Nixon refers to someone calling Felt "the White Rat," and Nixon speculates on whether Felt is Jewish.

At the moment, the newsroom is a bit abuzz about this. Bernstein won't confirm, and there's no word from Woodward or Bradlee.

The truth is, Deep Throat is more interesting as an enigma, as a Mystery Man. Uncertainty is liberating. In foggy realms our imagination and creativity are unfettered. If D.T. is just a top FBI official, it's a huge letdown. First of all, it'd be better (from a dramatic standpoint) if it was a White House insider, rather than someone in law enforcement. (Why does an FBI agent leaking to a reporter not seem as snazzy as, say, a White House lawyer having a spasm of conscience?) But no matter who D.T. is, he's more interesting when we can project onto him a personality of our choosing.

So I'm hoping this latest D.T. revelation doesn't pan out. There've been so many before (Pat Gray, Fred Fielding, etc.). If Mark Felt really is Deep Throat, all we can say is: Oh. Him. Um, now what do we do?

I still think it was Nixon himself.

Weird that Vanity Fair breaks the story.

Posted by: chris | May 31, 2005 1:06 PM | Report abuse

you have to read to the end of the VF story. felt's family sez they approached woodward, but (paraphrasing) woodward cancelled appointments and doubted if felt had the mental facilities to understand what his family was claiming.

the VF story also says Felt agreed that selling his story in some way -- to pay for his grandkids' education -- would be a good reason for Deep Throat to break silence.

Posted by: chris k. | May 31, 2005 1:11 PM | Report abuse

i'm appalled on three counts. first, that felt would find the need to sell (and then defend) making money off of his story after all of these years under the pretense that he had misgivings about what he'd done--and then use funding for his grandchildren's education as an excuse for doing so. second, that we would pick a tacky magazine like vanity fair as the forum for making his disclosure. and, last but certainly not least, i'm apalled that it is taking the washington post, woodward and bernstein so long to confirm or deny this disclosure. every hour they wait is an embarrassment. ssuming that felt is indeed deep throat, their lack of response will be seen for exactly what it is: a sour grapes attempt to get as much publicity for themselves as possible out of the announcement now that they've been pre-empted.

Posted by: mrscissors | May 31, 2005 1:29 PM | Report abuse

Don't feel let down Joel! What do you do now? How about investigating and telling the real story about W&B's methods? It's highly likely that Deep Throat was a composite "person" who was actually several different sources. Maybe that's one of the reasons W&B have been slow to confirm this story. They may be worried that if they confirm it's Felt, then suddenly they may have other sources stepping out of the woodwork saying "wait a minute, that wasn't him, that was me..." This is a huge issue. If there really were multiple sources, then W&B conducted some shady journalism and hid their activities under the heading of protected source. While it doesn't diminish the impact they had, it certainly tarnishes their methods and makes some of their other work suspect. Why should we even suspect such an act of deceit? Well, to see suspicious journalism, one only has to look as far as Woodward's supposed deathbed visit to William Casey, former CIA director. (It's a pivotal part of his 1987 book "Vail.") Here is the rebuttal: 1) Casey's wife, who was at the hospital constantly, said the visit didn't take place. 2) There were guards posted outside of Casey's room, but no one saw Woodward visit. 3) The nurses on the floor said Casey NEVER WOKE UP from his coma the whole time he was in the hospital. (I knew one of the nurses who attended him.) So... how could Woodward have interviewed him? Most important, how could Casey ever say that he didn't? That's the real issue: Sources who can't contradict the journalist! This is the big issue with Deep Throat too. W&B have long said said they would wait until Deep Throat died before revealing who he was. Uh-oh, Mark Felt has certainly complicated things now by coming forward and saying it was him. Felt may have been the main source, but, as you mentioned in your first post in this string, Felt himself once told a reporter that he thought Deep Throat was a composite person. There's your story right there Joel. THAT is "what you do now."

Here's the operative paragraph: Joan and Mark junior [Felt's children] urged him to go public, explaining that they wanted his legacy to be heroic and permanent, not anonymous, and adding that perhaps he could profit from his revelations. Felt argued with them, saying he didn't want the story out there. Joan recalls saying: "Bob Woodward's gonna get all the glory for this, but we could make at least enough money to pay some bills, like the debt I've run up for the kids' education. Let's do it for the family."

The kids are pressuring Felt to do it for them, for the money.

I don't believe Felt is Deep Throat. I agree the book "Silent Coup" makes a compelling case for Alexander Haig

Posted by: Hank | May 31, 2005 1:58 PM | Report abuse

what can we do now that D.T. has been revealed? Simple: let's find out who really killed JFK.

Posted by: Grassy Knoll | May 31, 2005 1:58 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Felt was always near the top of the list, but none of those on it really fit the mold provided by All the President's Men. DT was no one, not even a composite. He was a lot of free-floating scraps of information and Woodstein's collective hunch of the moment. Ben Bradlee let them get away with it. What a break for all of us.

Posted by: rob in dc | May 31, 2005 2:04 PM | Report abuse

This doesn't smell right to me, his kids are pressuring a senile man to say this, to get them money. Several times people have come out to proclaim they figured DT out, and so far none of them has been right (and sometimes ridiculous). I'll believe it if and when Woodward confirms.

Fielding is the most likely candidate in my eyes, a guy who would have known a lot, been sympathetic to Dean, but low profile enough figure that he wasn't involved in the actual crime.

And Silent Coup was a horrible book.

Woodward and Bernstein are able to refute that a person is Deep Throat, aren't they? I mean, if someone who is not Deep Throat claimed that he was, then they could deny it. Yet they aren't.

There are no other women on the list because Woodward and Bernstein have in fact publically confirmed that Deep Throat was a man and not a woman. They ruled out Diane Sawyer. They have always said that the way they described Deep Throat (physically) in their book is accurate.

Posted by: spygirl | May 31, 2005 2:22 PM | Report abuse

It seems to me that if a person reveals that they are a source in a story themselves, that the journalists no longer have a reason, need or obligation to protect them. Hence, if Felt was Deep Throat, they could confirm it. Since they didn't confirm it, Felt isn't Deep Throat.

Posted by: Deep Throat | May 31, 2005 2:25 PM | Report abuse

Felt isn't Deep Throat. The reason why W&B will neither deny nor confirm Felt as DT is because they said they would not reveal any details about DT until he is dead. So,DT is not dead. And Felt needed some money.

Posted by: True Washingtonian-->Seattlite | May 31, 2005 2:28 PM | Report abuse

To the best of my knowledge, Woodward has only confirmed that one person is NOT Deep Throat -- Michael Eisner.

I suspect that a number of documents currently in locked storage will remain in locked storage until the DT obit appears in the Washington Post, front page and above the fold. Some will probably accept a facsimile of the newspaper headline.

Until that time, I thankfully accept the joint "no comments" that are issued by the official keepers of the secret.

For a man to come out and say he's D.T. when he's not D.T. would be more embarassing than being D.T.

Woodstein will have the final say on this matter.

Posted by: Felt Like DT | May 31, 2005 2:38 PM | Report abuse

The best part of the Vanity Fair piece was that it starts with Felt's daughter (who does come across as a bit of a gold-digger) answering the door for Woodward, and she has NO IDEA who he is.

I was born several years after the Watergate scandal, and I have known who Woodward is for as long as I can remember. You'd think if your father was on the shortlist of people suspected to be Deep Throat, you would have at least an elementary knowledge of the Watergate scandal.

Woodstein have, in the past, refused to deny that someone was DT on the theory that if they continued to deny that various people were DT, eventually, DT's actual identity would be obvious. I think the fact that they are refusing to confirm is an indication that either they don't believe this is coming from a mentally competent Felt or Felt is not DT.

Posted by: txpd | May 31, 2005 3:07 PM | Report abuse

"Silent Coup" makes a convincing case that Woodward knew Haig. That's all. To make a case that Haig is Deep Throat, they would have to establish that Haig had access to CREEP, and Colodny and Gettlin don't even TRY to make that assertion.

I'm kinda leaning toward believing Felt. It just seems to fit....

Who was "DeepThroat"? This seemed like an important question . . . about 1985. Now, Nixon is gone. The Societ Union is gone. East Germany and divided Berlin are gone. The Cold War itself is gone. Even Reagan is gone. The Chinese are into cellphones and building Wal-Marts. The world has changed and moved on from Watergate, which ruined the press by making what were ink-stained wretches think they could be stars, brand names like Woodstein. That is one reason the media is so out of touch today. History will remember the Watergate period as the "Age of Nixon," not the "Age of Felt." I am not a Nixonian. I always voted against him. As my grantmother used to sat "His head is not shaped right." She did not know how right she was. As she said, his head was not shaped right, but on the inside. Nevertheless, I recognize his historial greatness. Who was "Deep Throat"? Who, besides Larry King who will four-wall this, cares?

Posted by: Joe McNulty | May 31, 2005 3:33 PM | Report abuse

I might be among the earliest to label Mark Felt as Deep Throat - in a college paper, of which I still have the original (I'm 52 now). It was for a class on the politics of the bureaucracy at UCLA. I explained that Felt, as a life-long bureaucrat, had the most to grain from leaking: to protect the integrity of the agency from being corrupted by L. Patrick Gray, Nixon's hand-picked henchman, who steered the FBI away from the White House.

I can prove it - I still have the original, typed paper.

Which one of them lived in Bethesda? Heard an interesting rumor about that.

Anyway, too quick to jump the gun here--Felt is 91 and clearly could've had $ for his kids far earlier. Could be him, yes, but not necessarily is.

And I agree with W and B holding back. You give your word then you stick to it. That's what they're doing and that's what is the right thing to do.

As for people caring, well as a 22 year old recent college graduate, I've been fascinated by the story and grew up outside the beltway although I work within it now.

I won't deny that Felt certainly fits the profile, but so do another dozen on the short list of Deep Throat possibilities.

Why would DT ask Woodward and Bernstein to not release his name until he was dead, only to do it himself? And why would he go to Vanity Fair, of all things?

Still no word from Woodward on this, and until he, Bernstein or Ben Bradlee say something, I'm going to remain very sceptical.

Believe it was Woodward who offered secrecy until death (as opposed to DT asking for it) as part of a reporter's mantra to not reveal an anonymous source. As long as DT wished to remain anonymous, then Woodward was going to keep his mouth shut (except for telling Bernstein and Bradlee). Once you reveal an anonymous source you lose all credibility as a trustworthy reporter, even for the one or two that are trustworty today.

The sinister plot thickens, as Felt was passed over by Nixon for top FBI command. Nixon and company believed Felt to be Jewish and Nixon had problems with so many Jewish persons in top Govt levels. Hoover and Johnson were very tight pals and lived next door to each other in DC. Each had close associations to oil billionaire Clint Merchison in Texas, where a party hosted LBJ telling the DOB JFK was not going to bother him any longer. Felt being tight with Hoover also clued him into the deepest throat story of all on the Zionist associated hit on JFK. Felt got a large number of Hoover's secret files upon his death. Felt wanted the lead position in the FBI to keep the cover up going on JFK. They hated Robert Kennedy for telling Hoover to resign. Felt took out Nixon softly for the same reasons as JFK was taken out. Greed and Power corrupt absolutely. Mark Felt and others likely need to be in prison, as a large number of the FBI upper levels all know the Zionism thing played a major role in the death of a president and divided loyalties.

Posted by: Sleepers | June 2, 2005 9:52 AM | Report abuse

Yes, the covert games of Mark Felt were really about putting Warren Commission lackie Gerald R. Ford into the President's spot. As Nixon was not playing Hoover's games too well, and were becoming overly concerned of all the "Jew Boys" in the high Govt. positions in Washington. The house of cards in a highly involved high level cover up were about to come tumbling down and take out not only the FBI, but half the highest ranking people in DC, including LBJ, Ford, Hoover, Earl Warren, etc. Nixon pushed for the RICO Act, which Robert Kennedy wanted to take on organize crime, which was high Jewish controlled. The giant scandal that Mark Felt sought to dodge was only one click away from being exposed by Nixon to keep his spot in power. Just like Zapruder knew where to stand to get the prime shots with 8mm tape, which made his kids millionaires, so these Felt kids seek the same riches. Riches for keeping real dirt in high places concealed. The whole story on Mark Felt's motives and opportunities have yet to be told, even by the very helpful toward the bigger DC cover up Woodward and "Bernstein."

There would be no debate about this at all, if Nixon were not a crook. He was, he covered up the thing, made an enemies list, kept the war going, lied about it all. If anybody became a snitch as a result, the beginning of it all can be laid at the feet of Richard Milhous Nixon and those of his cronies that did not have the personal courage to say no to unabated law breaking. Period. And stop all this Zionist Jewish crap. Nixon was a quaker and he single handedly brought down the government himself. Just goes to prove that bad men come in all religions, colors and party affiliations.

Mark Felt coming out of his closet appears to lead toward heads to roll in DC. Nixon's big fear on Watergate was if the DNC had the goods on his connection with the JFK set up. Nixon was in Dallas at the Pepsi convention, which helped to mix up JFK's appearance schedules and other factors that lead to his extra time for the ride down the streets of Dallas without the Limo's top on to challenge Nixon's comment on how well he was liked there in Dallas.

And there appears more to the sorted story that pulls in Bush-41 and lots of others:

A well-documented book takes Bob Woodward to task as not telling the public a
complete story of how he supposedly got into the Watergate Affair. See,
"Silent Coup: The Removal of A President" by Len Colodny and Robert Gettlin, St.
Martin's Press, Inc., 1991. Bob Woodward's supposed story of how he got involved
with Mark Felt of the FBI is likewise incomplete and dodges all kinds of
necessary details. See Woodward's story, Washington Post, June 2, 2005.

Bob Woodward went to Yale University as a history major near the time that
George W. Bush, likewise a supposed history major, went there. Is Woodward, like
Bush, a member of the Skull and Bastards Society meeting for satanic
homosexual rituals in a windowless building at Yale, called "The Tomb" ?

What recently prompted George W. Bush to permit Bob Woodward to interview
Bush at length in the White House? Woodward,, a supposed author of several books,
apparently has his books "ghost-written".

Some guy named "Darrick Tenderlove" - a washed-up gay pornstar with rightwing political leanings - claimed last night on a radio show in northern California, KVMR( to be the "real" DT, a mechanic whose expertise at installing "monster truck tires" on White House limousines put him in touch with the corridors of power and claims now that Mark Felt never paid his bill for services rendered (the tires, one assumes). Needless to say, I believed every word of it the moment I heard it.

It would appear that ole Woodward and Bernstein played a role not unlike the shooters in the JFK assassination to get LBJ in place, except this time it was Ford.

The choice of Woodward and Bernstein's "Deep Throat" term is even more interesting. Hoover was supposed to be homosexual and Nixon's nickname was "Tricky Dick," which seems to suggest someone somewhere being used and abused along the lines of Linda L's problem in looking for satisfaction. Just who was DT doing?

Then when we get to watch Oliver Stone's movie on JFK and the nice gay photos that David Ferrie and the Trade Mart person Garrsion tried to prosecute sent up to DC to black mail Hoover into helping in the JFK cover up. Hoover knew if the news of his homosexual bias came out, all those secret black mail files he kept on everyone would not help. He knew he had to play LBJ's and Clint Merchison's game, the same game Hoover played far too often.

Nixon has long been a crook, since the time he broke into the Dean's Office at Duke to fix his grades in Law School. Most of the US Congress is not much better and they are mostly like a lot of used car salemen seeking their next high commission for unloading a load of corporate control on the citizens.

JFK's Dad fixed the election wins in places like Chicago with his Mafia connections, and nothing really changed with Nixon. LBJ was about to be charged with all kinds of crimes, when the shooting of JFK went down in Dallas.

The US is being run by a bunch of crooks ever since. Woodward, Bernstein, and their DT "Felt" buddy have a lot of explaining to do because their basic intentions appear very similar to the Dallas shooters job on JFK. Nixon shut down LBJ's big Vietnam war and cost all those Texas Lockheed-Martin, Halliburtons, and Brown-Root lots of money. JFK was going to do the same. Plus off Israel's big nuke plans.

Nixon's plumbers had access to lots of pay off money from places like Howard Hughes and his antinuclear test efforts in Nevada. Cuban BB Rebozo has a safe full of money to pass out for Nixon.

Then Warren Comission Ford comes along to save the day and pardon's Nixon so all the huge scams won't come out. How nice---checkmate.

All these Bonesmen with these homosexual ritual games in caskets going on in DC still to grease political intimidations.

The higher up one goes in DC, the more likely one finds a crook. Especially in the White House.

In example:
Can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500
employees and has the following statistics:

29 have been accused of spousal abuse

7 have been arrested for fraud

19 have been accused of writing bad checks

117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses

3 have done time for assault

71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit

14 have been arrested on drug-related charges

8 have been arrested for shoplifting

21 are currently defendants in lawsuits

84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year

Can you guess which organization this is?

Give up yet?
It's the 535 member United States Congress (House & Senate).

Lots of people think Woodward and Bernstein, their old stomping ground the W. Post, and their finacial backers have a lot of explaining to do.

Another example:

Watergate was a coup d'etat. Felt's true role is to deflect attention from the CIA. The family of central banker Eugene Meyer owns The Washington Post, which has long established ties to the CIA.

According to Webster Tarpley and Anton Chaitkin (The Unauthorized Biography of George Bush): "The reason the Watergate scandal escalated into the overthrow of Nixon has to do with the international monetary crisis of those years, and with Nixon's inability to manage the collapse of the Bretton Woods system and the US dollar in a way satisfactory to the Anglo-American financial elite...

Until 1972, Richard Nixon had been a compliant pawn of the Rothschild-Rockefeller cabal. In 1947, he answered an ad placed by some powerful businessmen looking for someone to run for Congress. The advertiser was none other than Prescott Bush, grandfather of Dubya, and a partner in Rothschild banking asset Brown Brothers Harriman.

After his humiliating defeat to California Governor Pat Brown in 1962, Nixon worked for John Mitchell, Nelson Rockefeller's personal attorney and lived rent-free in a posh apartment owned by Nelson Rockefeller. His job was to become President in 1968 when, to the consternation of his conservative supporters, he pursued Rockefeller's "internationalist" polices.

The bankers pulled the plug on Nixon because he was becoming unmanageable. Already before 1972, Nixon is heard on tape agreeing with Billy Graham that something had to be done about the "Jewish stranglehold" on the mass media or the "country will go down the drain." He also referred to elite-party-place Bohemian Grove as "the most faggy goddamn thing I've ever seen".

Houghton obtained a memo under the Freedom of Information Act in which Bennett admits he is briefing Bob Woodward. "Woodward's gratefulness was manifest in the way he kept the CIA, in general, and the Robert R. Mullen Company, in particular, out of his stories."

If we count the Kennedy Assasination, the impeachment of Richard Nixon was the second coup d'etat by the central bankers in a dozen years. They were steps leading to their attack on the World Trade Centre and the inception of the repressive Patriot Act.

Last week, the "free press" earned the title "Deep Throat" by demonstrating that, for a small price, it would swallow anything.

The carefully staged event illustrates how far it has gone from being guardian of the public interest to being an instrument of mass deception and social control. In the New World Order, traitors like Bob Woodward and Mark Felt are "heroes" while our defenders like Richard Nixon are defamed.

Felt and his Wash Post helpers wanted Nixon gone because he kept pulling the FBI into exposing itself on its CIA cooperation and reopening the JFK cover up.

What happened to the theory that the Watergate break-in had nothing to do with President Nixon but was a personal enterprise by John W. Dean to protect his then-girlfriend Maureen by removing information that linked her to a call-girl ring run out of the Democratic National Committee headquarters in the Watergate?
