Creepy Tale of a Sperm Donor
In the business we have a thing called a "talk story." That's what my colleague Michael Leahy produced on Father's Day, a tale of a sperm donor who decided to be Daddy For a Week. Different people will have different reactions to this story, but these people made me squirm. You read this and think: Something here is just not right. There's a whiff of narcissism: the donor seems to be dabbling in parenthood, treating fatherhood as a momentary reinvention, like trying out a new haircut. [Journalism students: Notice that at the core of this very powerful story is some amazing and almost painfully detailed reportage. Great reporting makes great journalism; you don't need lots of groaning, throbbing adjectives and various auxillary adverbs spicing up the text merrily.] Leahy fielded an avalanche of questions on our site yesterday.
