HUGE BREAKING GOLF NEWS
Tiger is 7 under after 12 holes??? Guess the wind ain't blowing at St. Andrews. When the wind doesn't blow on the Old Course, it's a putt-putt operation for Tiger. [I can't seem to find it on TV. Also I need coffee.] [Oops, he dropped a stroke on 13.] [I found it on TV, on TNT, and they are in full reverential mode, all the hallowed-grounds-of-golf stuff, and misty visions of Nicklaus in his Fat Jack stage.] [This is the latest iteration of Jack's Last British Open. Every couple of years he plays the British Open for the last time, and we all sniffle a little bit.] [Just a quick shout-out to Old Tom Morris.] [I am bad luck for Tiger. He hit into a hellish bunker, is now 5 under.]
Let me just note that dot.com has a new home page and I'm pretty sure I'm getting defaulted, personally, to the local home page as opposed to the national/international home page, and it makes me wonder if this blog will also now become a local blog. Which is fine! I can do local traffic. I can do the best bagel. Seriously I am all about local news. I can blog pretty much nonstop about my ordeal every day at lunchtime, as I search for matter that will make the hunger go away, and endure various efforts by restaurants and sandwich chains to force me to read complex menus with too many options. More on this exciting topic later, as Achenblog Goes Totally Local.

I'm a tad disappointed. I saw there were no comments yet and wanted to add "first to post on an Achenblog" to my list of accomplishments. Oh well. I love to watch Tiger win. I don't know exactly why. My father-in-law doesn't like him because "he wins too much". I understand his sentiments, and yet even as I know it would be somehow be good to root for the underdogs, when Tiger starts winning I get all excited! I'll have to turn to TNT and check things out.

What I want to know is why people say: "I really don't like Tiger, he wins too much." See, logically speaking, when you're the best player in golf and you dominate the game, you will win a lot of tournaments. Why are people complaining about Tiger being a good athlete in golf? Why don't they complain about other golfers not stepping up and challenging Tiger! Tiger is my favorite athlete out there because he consistently pushes and challenges himself, even beyond his own records. When you're good at golf, you win. So, stop complaining about Tiger winning---he's just getting started.

Stop calling him "fat Jack"....those of us who are really fat are taking offense at that pudgy remark... And as for Tiger, he roars! He's good for the game, good for ratings, and good for US, which we need internationally right now :-)

sorry bostonreader.

Oh, don't apologize to Boston--I lived there too, before DC, and they've got enough to celebrate between the Sox and the Pats, to not be too whiny about anything!!
C'mon Joel, how's Tiger doing?? Those of us at work need an update!!

I don't know where this will appear, or if it will appear, but just want to commend the achenblog. It's real funny. Is this a blog right now?

If the British Open is on TNT does this mean that it will be on NBC this weekend? So, what happens to Sunday's NASCAR race on NBC?
Perhaps you can comment on the relative merits of this conundrum -Golf vs. NASCAR?
And what does it mean for human civilazation.
(There are no fat NASCAR drivers)

Bostonreader shouldn't feel ashamed for wanting Tiger to win. If Jack Nicklaus hadn't won such an exorbitant number of times, would he have his face on a fiver or be serenaded off every major course the way he is? You must have dominant players to make sports compelling! When Tiger wasn't winning, it took the wind out of the PGA's sails. It's all good bostonreader, and the sports world is ultimately grateful that Tiger is in the lead today. So, forget your father-in-law. He apparently doesn't appreciate watching history in the making.

who are the best Muslim golfers in the world these days? Several other individual sports, including tennis and swimming and badminton and croquet would surely benefit from the involvment of all races, religions, roustabouts and rudy-poos. Athletics can be a great unifying force, emphasizing teamwork, hard work, fair play and personal bests. Good clean fun for everyone, eh?!?

OK, at the risk of offending everyone, NASCAR is a total crock....I mean what is the point of driving around in circles and wasting gasoline?? My opinion is the same as Hawkeye's on MASH when asked if he was going to the cockroach races...."No, I think they all just go to watch the cockroaches crash"....

Actually I think a blog about how there's nothing to eat for lunch would be quite interesting. I work adjacent to the Union Station food court hell. There is literally nothing to eat there for lunch that does not simply depress me the moment I go foraging. Worse than that, it is crawling with schoolbusloads of teeny-bopper tourists or (worse) old people on tour from some vaguely Red State area, whose sole functions at Union Station appear to be (1) cause traffic jams, delaying important tasks by people working for a living and (2) bringing enough business to the station food court that there is no pressure to lower prices on the clearly 2nd or 3rd rate food. Now there's a blog for you. Let me know when you want to have lunch.

Hey, I'm an old grandmother who got into the game after years of watching it with my husband. Love Tiger, but I really love Phil Michelson. Was most thrilled when he finally got his green jacket. He is one class act. He was very gracious some years back when he took second and since then I believe the person who won passed away in a plane crash. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about,( I truly can't remember his name) but ever since then I've been on his side and cheer for him all the time. Like right now! Hope he does well.

Michelle,
Nextel Cup race at Loudon, NH (a track I've raced at myself), will be on TNT Sunday afternoon at 1:30 PM EST.
NBC will be carrying the British Open.
As far as wasting gasoline going around in circles goes, Judy, I think that NBC and Fox would beg to differ. The NASCAR Nielsen ratings and the rates they're getting for commercial time make it quite profitable. Now, I think they should switch over to ethanol or methanol like some of the domestic open wheel series use, but I think the advertising $$ from the oil and gas companies is too good to do that right now.
No fat NASCAR drivers, that's funny.
No bald ones, either.

Yow - didn't mean to come across whiney - I'm not that neurotic (well, at least not about golf!). I love to watch Tiger win. And yet am happy for the guys who manage to beat him. So it's all good!

Mr. Achenbach,
please dont switch to totally local. I dont and have never lived near the DC area. As a Post addict I continue to channel the paper and pull up this website in every country/state I am in. I dont want to be 'out of the loop' because I am outside the belt. dont do it!
