By Popular Demand: Cattle Buyer Jokes

My folks are in town, we mostly sit around and tell jokes and shoot the breeze and eat too much. My Mom reminded me that my uncle recently mailed me some Cattle Buyer Jokes. (It's always nice to get jokes in the mail. It's a tradition that's in decline.) My uncle has cattle, so he's up on all the latest cattle humor. Anyway we sat around and read the jokes aloud. They have to be told properly, with the right pauses and inflections and accents, and the ensuing laughter ideally should be unrestrained and guffawing, almost in the category of hooting, with some cackling thrown in, all the mirth heavily accentuated by knee-slapping and table-pounding.

Here's one that put us all in stitches:

Two cattle buyers from Oklahoma were on a trip to Central Texas to look at a set of cows when they were pulled over by a State Trooper. The trooper walked up and tapped on the driver-side window with his nightstick. The cattle buyer rolled down the window and WHACK, the trooper smacked him in the head with his nightstick.

"What the hell was that for?" the cattle buyer asked.

"You're in Texas, " the trooper answered. "When we pull you over in Texas, you better have your license ready by the time we get to your car."

The trooper ran a check on the license and the cattle buyer was clean, so he gave him his license back. The trooper then walked around to the passenger side and tapped on the window and the other cattle buyer rolled down the window and "WHACK", the trooper smacked him on the head with the nightstick.

"What'd you do that for?" the cattle buyer demanded.

"Making your wish come true," replied the trooper.

"Making WHAT wish come true?" the cattle buyer asked.

"I know you cattle buyer types," The trooper said.  "A hundred feet down the road, you're would've turned to your buddy and said... "I wish that SOB would've tried that on me!"

[Here's another one with a punch line that caught me by surprise:]

A cattle buyer stumbled through the front door of a tavern, staggered up to the bar, and with difficulty, crawled onto a barstool where he swayed back and forth.

After he finally got stablized on the barstool, he yelled at the bartender, "Give me  a double shot of your best whisky,"

The bartender politely replied, "Sir, it appears you've had enough to drink.  I'm not going to be able to serve you.  Let me call you a cab so you get home safely."

Incredulous, the cattle buyer said, "Let me tell you where you can go.  I should have known better than to come into this dive."

Gathering all of the dignity he could muster, the cattle buyer weaved his way out of the bar.  About 10 minutes later, he wobbled through the side door of the bar and ordered a drink.  The bartender again refused to serve him and asked him to leave the bar.

A little later, the cattle buyer came into the bar through the back door and demanded a drink.

The bartender said, "Look buddy... You're drunk and I'm not going to serve you.  Now you can either let me call a cab or the police.  It's your choice."

The cattle buyer slobbered, "Damn... How many places do you tend bar?"

[And now finally this, the best of the bunch:]

Late one Fall, a cattle buyer was taking delivery of 1,500 yearlings 180 miles away.  Because of the number of cattle and several sellers being involved, he took his secretary with him to help with the tallying and paperwork.  By the time they got the cattle weighed, loaded, and the trucks on the road, there were a few snowflakes in the air.

The cattle buyer and his secretary stopped at a restaurant to get something to eat and by the time they finished eating, a full fledged blizzard was underway.  They started for home, but only went about 20 miles before they came to a road block where the Highway Patrol was turning traffic around because the road was closed due to white-out conditions 50 miles down the road.

They went back to the only motel in town to get a couple of rooms but there was only one room left and it only had 1 bed.  They talked it over and decided they didn't have any choice but to share the room.  Later that evening, they went to bed and the secretary said, "I'm a little cold... Would you mind getting me an extra blanket?"

The cattle buyer thought a moment and then replied, "You know what... Since we're sleeping in the same bed tonight, maybe we ought to act like we're married."

With a twinkle in her eye, the secretary said, "That doesn't sound like too bad of an idea."

"O.K. then" replied the cattle buyer, "Get up and get your own damned blanket."

I sense a field day for CowTown!

Yup, our very own Doctor of Bovinity should have some relevant thoughts, fer sure!

Two ranchers from Oklahoma were at a cattle auction in Fort Worth. Once their neighbors learned where they were from they subjected the two to a steady stream of Okie jokes and derogatory observations on the Sooner state, concluding by referring to Oklahoma as "nothing but an outlying portion of Texas". "That's nothin' but a damn lie!" they retorted. "There ain't no place can out lie Texas!"

After living in Texas and Oklahoma for over 20 years, now that I'm gone one of the little things that I begin to miss is the noon farm and market report on the radio and TV, with all its talk of gilts and shoats, sows and hogs, canners and cutters. That, and the TV ads for cattle de-wormer. This is a treatment for bovine intestinal worms. It comes in tubes like caulk (only bigger) and is loaded into a caulking gun (only bigger) and squirted into the cow's rectum. The ads always seem to emphasize that the product would not "stress 'em or set 'em back". Yeah, right. Mooooooooooooooooooooooooo....

Posted by: kurosawaguy | December 9, 2005 9:29 AM | Report abuse

I remember TV ads for bovine conditions such as "cheesy gland" and "pulpy kidney." Ugh. I don't know what either of those things are, and I don't think I *want* to know.

Posted by: Achenfan | December 9, 2005 9:36 AM | Report abuse

SCC entry:
The ads were for TREATMENTS for these conditions. (I think the conditions themselves would be pretty tough to sell.)

Posted by: Achenfan | December 9, 2005 9:37 AM | Report abuse

I REALLY glad you cleared that up. I was wondering what the target audience might be for those products.

Posted by: Bob S. | December 9, 2005 9:39 AM | Report abuse

Hahaha. I like 'em. But I'm from that strange land called New England, so what do I know about cattle humor. What did the final arbiter on humor have to say about these?

Are the different colors and fonts some sort of secret code?

I've got a sneaking suspicion that the font mess is related to cutting and pasting, but who knows. FM, man, it's all FM (as we used to say in my avionics repairing days).

I also have to make an addendum to the "sex" Kit: I looked up those pictures from Penn of the kids doing you-know-what in plain view. The picture looks like it might have been taken from the next county over, and all you can see is what I presume is a guy's naked butt-cheeks pressed up against the window. No woman is discernable and whether copulation is occuring is strictly up to personal interpretation.

A kid is getting kicked out of school for this. Something that doesn't even rise to the level of PG-13. Sheesh.

Achenfan writes, "I think the conditions themselves would be pretty tough to sell." I agree

A quick search reveals:
"It is difficult to diagnose pulpy kidney as death is often the only clinical sign and it is often confused with bloat." And these days in our country, bloat seems to be endemic.

Then there is this from our friends Down Under (where they claim to be #1 in cheesy gland)-

"Cheesy gland pus, as the name suggests, has the consistency of soft cheese, becoming firmer in older lesions that are well encased. Lesions may enlarge slowly and reach a diameter of 20 to 40 mm. These abscesses may rupture and discharge pus with a characteristic greenish tinge." Just makes you want to get all antipodean, doesn't it?

Watch (pray?) for Texas rain, and if the wet stuff doesn't appear, possibly a glut of beef on the market in spring, with slightly lower prices for all cuts (?)--depending, of course, on the cost of oil for transportation. Heard it here first, folks.

Ranchers' hopes evaporating
Web Posted: 12/07/2005 12:00 AM CST

William Pack
Express-News Business Writer

With hay costing about twice its normal price, little if any feed on the ground and water levels in stock tanks receding daily, ranchers across Texas recognize that their run of good fortune may be drying up.

"Ranchers hoped to put three good years of rainfall together, but 2005 did not work out that way," said Matt Brockman, executive vice president of the Texas and Southwestern Cattle Raisers Association. "It's dealt us a setback this year."

How much of a setback still is being calculated because the drought -- a phenomenon nearly statewide that reminds ranchers of the severe conditions they faced in 1996 [been there, done that: nasty, nasty, never seen anything like it] -- is just getting started.

Cattle prices have stayed high, but there are concerns they may not last much longer, especially if the drought forces ranchers to sell off their herds.

If the rains stay away this winter and early spring, costs could reach oppressive levels for an already shrinking industry with rich South Texas roots.

"If this carries on into next year, you're going to separate the men from the boys," said Roy Baring Jr., a rancher and past president of the Bexar County Junior Livestock Show. "If it goes through the spring, it will be real tough."

What the National Weather Service calls San Antonio's 14th driest January-through-November period on record already has forced ranchers to ante up for costly hay and special nutritional feeds. Where land is running out of water, cattle producers have reduced their herd size.

The drought in South Texas isn't the worst in the state, even though San Antonio is almost 15 inches below normal rainfall from the beginning of the year and Laredo is almost 12 inches short of normal.

A drought monitor developed by the federal government shows the situation in South Texas varies from moderate to severe, while a strip of Northeast Texas from the Dallas-Fort Worth area to the Oklahoma and Arkansas border is rated extreme.

Mark Lenz, a weather service hydrologist, conceded what every rancher knows -- dry weather isn't abnormal for the area. But rain has been falling more heavily than normal over the past six years, with only 2003 producing below-normal rainfall, Lenz said.

The problem this year did not become serious, officials said, until August, September and October. Those dry months didn't provide the nourishing rains that are counted on to keep pastures fertile into the winter. Without adequate ground forage, ranchers were forced to feed their cattle hay and special nutritional supplements earlier and more intensely than normal.

That costs more -- this year quite a bit more because hay is in short supply and can cost twice or more what it normally does.

When fuel and labor costs are added to the product costs, the special attention could increase operating costs by $1 a day per animal, said Joe Paschal, Texas A&M University extension livestock specialist in South Texas.

"Our feeding costs have gone up at least 50 percent this year," said Brockman of the cattle raisers association.

But feed costs are only one headache stemming from the drought, and it may not be as thorny as the other problem -- the obvious lack of water.

Stock tanks throughout South Texas are running low, and in many areas that's all the water available for livestock. In some areas, underground water is too salty for animals; in others, it's in limited supply.

Rancher Baring said that in McMullen County, one of three where he and his family operate ranches, no well water is available. Rain there has been so scarce that many ranchers are 30 to 45 days away from running out of surface water.

"Without water, you can't run cattle," Baring said. "If you run out of water, you're done."

In the past, ranchers with dwindling water supplies have found extra land to lease that had water. Officials said property is becoming harder to find and more expensive to lease, but not just because water is drying up.

Big chunks of rural Texas have been taken out of ranching and devoted to deer and wildlife management for the benefit of hunters, not cattle.

The additional water costs that ranchers face will eat heavily into any profits they might earn off their breeding cows next spring, Texas A&M's Paschal said.

Rick Machen, extension livestock specialist in Uvalde, said ranchers must decide how much to gamble that the rains will return and their herds will do well next year.

They can't absorb an unlimited amount of production costs because they can't depend on having those costs covered at auction, he said.

As a result, ranchers are trimming their herds a little deeper than normal.

Joe Hargrove, a rancher who owns the Southwest Livestock Exchange in Uvalde, said about 20 percent to 25 percent more cattle than normal are moving through his barns.

They are mainly lighter calves going to feedlots and cows or bulls destined for slaughter, but the prices for the animals have held up well, Hargrove said.

Neal Leonard, president of L&H Packing Co. in San Antonio, said prices for all types of cattle have been at historic levels and have climbed slightly higher this year.

Those prices have allowed ranchers to keep going as the drought stretches on, but they need more rain to make 2006 a success. Otherwise, they could be facing the same tough choices they confronted in the last bad drought.

"We're at a crucial juncture," Brockman said. "Without rain this winter, we'll find ourselves in the same shape or worse than we were during the late 1990s and early 2000s."

Cattle sheep and goats are all subject to pulpy kidney, and humans can be infected with cheesy gland, so better stay home from the meat packing job if you have open sores or wounds. And listen, you slugabeds, I'm at work, I'm the only one here, and I'm up to my widdershinns in alien autopsies from the storm (they know nothing about driving in snow and ice, that's one of the ways to spot them). Just an aside to Science Tim. That sound you hear is me whacking my forehead with my palm! Of course, I'm familiar with the fact that there's an obervatory on the top of Mauna Kea. Just never had a reason to head to the top of the mountain...(and didn't realize that you'd be working within). Did/does the altitude give you better views of the heavens?

Am far more familiar with the Mauna Kea Resort, but as an outsider. The resort property gave Hawaii Prep Academy permission to bring the summer-school children down the mountain by van to watch their beautiful July 4th fireworks display from their seaside terraces.

But did receive an invite from a summer beau to ride horses on Pu'a Wa'awa'a (Pumpkin Mountain...hence the link I provide) Ranch back in the late '70s when it was still more of a working cattle ranch (and as the Web shows, today more of a bed and breakfast/tourist acommodation). His parents were the ranch *managers* at the time.

The cattle buyer was at his favorite watering hole and flirting with his favorite cocktail waitress when a loud argument started at a nearby table. The argument was about why oil prices keep going higher.

The cattle buyer listened for a few moments, and never being shy about sharing his opinions, he slid his chair over the table and joined the discussion...

"You guys have it all wrong. It's really pretty simple how we came to have an oil shortage here in America... Nobody bothered to check the oil."

He continued, "We just didn't know we were getting low in production and refining capacity. The reason for that is purely geographical. Most of our oil production is located in Alaska, California, Louisiana, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Texas."

"And our DIPSTICKS are located in Washington, DC."

Wow. I get to the Boodle late and I'm on the spot all ready. I have to confess I don't know much cow humor (I've got a huge arsenal of "yo mama" jokes - go figure) except for one joke I barely remembered so I had to rummage through the internet to find it (below). My father in law maintains a small herd of no more than 80 head and he sells them all locally. Suspicious of my white collar existance and post-graduate degree, he makes sure I get some "honest work" done whenever I come to visit. So, I know a bit about cleaning the barn (you don't use Fantastic), stacking hay, grinding feed, and watering and feeding calves. I have been spared the chore of crimping calves, though that day may come. I absolutely have never had ANY occasion to de-worm a cow, and the very idea makes me turn a little green.

Here's one example of farm humor: I'm typing up another for a post later:

A man's car stalled on a country road one morning. When the man got out to fix it, a cow came along and stopped beside him. "Your trouble is probably in the carburetor," said the cow.

Startled, the man jumped back and ran down the road until he met a farmer. The amazed man told the farmer his story.

"Was it a large red cow with a brown spot over the right eye?" asked the farmer. "Yes, yes," the man replied.

"Oh! I wouldn't listen to Bessie," said the farmer. "She doesn't know a thing about cars."

Bob S.,
You're right: I'm not trying. Hubby is home on a comp day for his travel to Philly.

I'm burning with desire to see Gaghan's new movie, "Syriana" that opens today and since it's colder than a cow's ? (I'd like to say slicker than cow slobber, but no precip...k-guy is probably much better versed in cow anatomy than I) outside, we're heading to the first show of the day at 11:05 a.m., just 1.5 miles from us, on the way/road to Bandera, "Dude Ranch Capital of Texas."

The brand-new multiplex is a hoot, with giant pictures of Roy Rogers (remember Dale Evans hails from Uvalde) and Gene Autry and other silver-screen cowboy stars. Every fixture is a Western motif.

So my mind is on Gaghan's hyperlink movie and oil, oil, oil, not cows, cows, cows. So, you and Cowtown (I was only kidding yesterday about the Henckels, Cowtown--you and bc are quite brilliant at parody) must hold down the cow-joke fort, since I'm set to leave the ranch and herd up some movie memories.

Here's the other one:

The County Agent was visiting a small dairy farm when he excused himself to use the facilities. He opened the door to the outhouse sitting at the top of a small hill and was embarrassed to find one of the farm hands already sitting within.

As the County Agent was closing the door, the hand cried out, "Hey! It's OK, you can come in. It's a two-holer!"

Sure enough, when the County Agent looked into the outhouse, there were two seats. The County Agent sat down just as the farm hand was finishing his business. When the farm hand stood and pulled up his coveralls, some pocket change rattled loose and fell down the hole. The farm hand cursed, then took his wallet out of his back pocket, fished out a five dollar bill, and through it down the hole after the pocket change.

The County Agent was shocked. "Why in the world would you throw five dollars down that outhouse hole," he asked.

The farm hand looked at the County Agent as if addressing a slow child, "We'll I'm sure as hell not going to go down in there just for thirty-five cents!"

Budda boom.

Ha ha, CowTown!

That outhouse story reminds me of the time I used a Port-o-John on the way back from Virgnina Beach this past Labor Day weekend. Someone had written the usual "Here I sit . . ." ditty on the wall, and then someone else had written something like "If you can't write something new, don't write anything!" This exchange reminded me so much of the 'boodle -- especially since I hadn't been able to 'boodle over that particular weekend and was experiencing withdrawal symptoms -- that I felt the need to pull out a pen and write, "Says who?!" [Oh boy. As my dear old Dad is wont to say, if I was twice as funny, I'd be a wit.]

When I told my husband I'd written graffiti on a toilet wall, he threatened to tell the Highway Patrol. I don't normally do that sort of thing, but, as I said, I was missing the 'boodle, and when you don't have Internet access, a toilet wall is the next best thing. Plus those "please do this"/"please don't do that" types really get my goat. [Resists urge to add a pulpy kidney or cheesy gland reference to the goat reference -- that would just make this comment too "busy."]

Altitude helps in astronomy because it puts you on the upper side of the clouds. For that to work, however, you need to have local weather systems that are stable and at lower altitude than the top of the mountain. Hawaii is a pimple in the middle fo the vast Pacific Ocean. Weather is relatively stable, clouds live at about 7000 feet elevation. The top of the mountain is at 13.8K feet, so the clouds are way down below. It's very odd to emerge from the observatory at dawn and find the clouds a mile below your feet. They look soft and fluffy and comforting... but they won't hold you up, so don't try to lie down on them and take a nap.

I can't believe I'm posting this, but here goes:

Remember the mooooovie, Colors? Robert Duvall, veteran cop, trying to explain to rookie cop Sean Penn why they shouldn't rush an arrest, tells this joke:

A bull and his son are standing on a hill looking down at a herd of cows in the valley below. Young bull says "Hey Dad, let's run down there and f-word one of those cows!" Father bull says "No, son, let's **walk** down; f-word em all!"

(Oh my God, I am heartily sorry for having offended Thee. And I detest of all my sins because I dread the loss of Heaven and the pains of Hell; but most of all because I have offended Thee, my God, who are all good and deserving of all my love. I firmly resolve, with the help of Thy grace, to confess my sins, to do penance and to amend my life. Amen)

Okay, there are others who can write thematic songs. This doesn't happen to be on the theme of the Kit, but Linda asked about Hawaii and volcanoes and astronomy, so...

No particular tune, just make it sound like generic blues.

Hmmm, Generic Blues. I bet one of the musical guys could come up with a Generic Blues song.

--------------------------------------------------
Astronomical Volcano Blues

I stood up this morning, and I walked out the door.
I saw the Sun rising, out over the shore.
I'm on top of a mountain, in the middle of Hawaii.
I've been up all night, just watching the sky!

I have these sitting on top of this volcano blues.
I'm learning 'bout the universe, and that's the news.
I'm going to come back tonight and watch the sky some more.
I'm going to sit here and wonder, what's it there for?

I'm in the control room and the 'scope's in the dome.
I'm on the same planet, but I'm so far from home.
My instrument sees the sky, and I see the screen.
My computer shows me squiggles -- oh, what do they mean?

I have these sitting on top of this volcano blues.
There's ozone on Mars, and that's the news.
I'm going to come back tonight and watch the sky some more.
I'm going to sit here and wonder, what's it there for?

There are stars on the TV and the spectra look fine.
They're dancing with planets, all of the time.
We wouldn't have found them if we hadn't gone to look.
Now, there's over a hundred planets in the latest textbooks.

I have these sitting on top of this volcano blues.
There's other planets than ours, and that's the news.
I'm going to come back tonight and watch the sky some more.
I'm going to sit here and wonder, what's it there for?

There are telescopes in orbit, there are scopes on the ground.
There's thousands of papers reporting what we have found.
There's sugar in space, and there's dark energy.
The next time that I look , oh what will I see?

I have these sitting on top of this volcano blues.
I'll never be finished, and that's the news.
I'm going to come back real soon and watch the sky some more.
I'm going to sit here and wonder, what's it there for?

I have these astronomically and grammatically and orthographically correct, sitting on top of this volcano blues!

An Okie is building a house. He has a pile of nails and he's nailing up boards. He picks up a nail, looks at it, nails it in. Picks up a nail, looks at it, throws it away. He continues like this for a while and then his friend, a Texan, says to him, "Why are you throwing those nails away? They look okay to me." The Okie says, "Well, I pick 'em up, and if they're pointing towards the house, I nail 'em in. If they're pointing the other direction, I throw them away." The Texan is disgusted. He says, "You Okies are as dumb as dirt. You don't know nothin. Those nails you're throwin' away? Those are for the other side of the house!"

I don't know why, but this is one of my favorite jokes. So sue me. I'm from Oklahoma and corny humor is my birthright.

When I was a kid, "Irish jokes" were all the rage. There was the one about the Irish banana factory that went out of business because they kept throwing away all the bent ones. And then there was that one about the Irish ice factory that went out of business because the lady who knew the recipe died. [I have some Irish blood in me, so I guess it's OK for me to make Irish jokes.]

Getting back to nails and hammers and being "as dumb as dirt," I just love the phrase "as dumb as a bag of hammers." (But I never use it, of course.)

Three college students were driving across Texas when they spotted a bull mounting a heifer in the field by the road. The SMU student said, "I wish I was that bull and that heifer was Britney Spears!" The University of Texas student said, "I wish I was that bull and that heifer was Eva Longoria!" On the Hawaii theme:

A man was walking along the beach and discovered a lantern in the sand.

He rubbed the ancient illumination device and a genie materialized. In a not-so-dramatic voice, the genie said "I'm getting sick and tired of having my soaps interrupted all of the time. You get one wish, that's it, make it good."

The man thought long and hard. Finally, his deepest desire was realized: "I have always wanted to visit Hawaii but I am deathly afraid of airplanes. My wish is for you to build a bridge to Hawaii so that I can drive there."

The genie was quite upset and replied: "Are you out of your mind? Do you realize how much concrete and steel that would take? I can't even imagine all of the undersea ecosystems I would have to wipe out so you can have a little vacation. Forget it, pick something easier."

So the man contemplated again for a while. When he was ready, he spoke to the genie: "I would dearly like to go to Hawaii but, if you cannot do this for me, I think I would like my wish to be an understanding of women. I would like to know what they want, what they need, and what they like. I think if I knew everything about them I would be able to relate to them better and be a better person as a result.

The genie looked rather taken aback. While rubbing his chin, he replied: "So, did you want that to be two lanes, or four?"

B. Crosby - Here's a political version of essentially the same joke:

In the late 1970s President Jimmy Carter, Egyptian President Anwar Sadat and Israeli Prime Minister Menachem Begin decided to shuck their multiple layers of security guards and take a walk together through the lush woodlands around Camp David. As the three were walking together through the forest they heard the Voice of the Lord Himself booming down upon them. They fell instantly to their knees. The Heavenly Voice from above said, "Arise, my sons. You need not be on your knees. You are doing my work. You are making peace. "In reward for your efforts, you may have the answer to any one question that may reside in your hearts."

President Jimmy Carter went first.
"Dear God," he asked, "when will we have a nuclear-free world?"

"In the year 2048," God replied.
And President Carter began to cry.
"Why do you cry?" asked God.

"Not in my administration," sobbed President Carter.

Then it was Sadat's turn.
"Dear God," asked the Egyptian president, "when will my Arab brothers finally be united?"

"In the year 4004," God replied.
And then Sadat began to cry.

"Why do you cry?" asked God.
"Not in my administration," wailed Sadat.

Then it was Prime Minister Menachem Begin's turn.
"Dear God," he asked. "When will Israel finally begin to get fair treatment in the world media?"

And then God began to cry.

"Dear God, why do You cry?" asked all three of them.

And in one heartful cry the Lord replied, "NOT IN MY ADMINISTRATION!"

Will Rogers was once invited to be the main speaker at a dinner honoring a retiring politician. Speaker after speaker rose and gave glowing testimony to the politico and his "30 years serving the people of this state." Finally Rogers was introduced and told the following story:
"When I was a young boy my daddy took me aside one day and told me to round up the heifer and her take over to the neighboring ranch. I did as I was told. I rounded up the heifer and led her down the road to the neighbor place. When the rancher came out and saw us, he motioned me to lead the heifer into the barn, where he tied her into a stall. He then drew me outside and told me to wait while he brought in the bull to serve her. Pretty soon I heard bawling and snorting and sounds of a struggle, so I peeked in through the barn door and I saw what the bull was doing to that heifer, and I know what you've been doing to the people of this state for the last 30 years!"

How many of you have milked a cow. I HAVE! First you pat her (Belle was Uncle Claude and Aunt Dora's milkcow)on the back and say something reassuring and imaginative like "Easy girl", then take a seat on a 3 legged wooden stool. You don't use all your fingers, just your thumb, index and bird finger. And you don't pull straight down; you kinda angle it and veer the stream towards the bucket. Once it's full and the cow is empty, you quick move the bucket before Belle can kick it over. She had a habit of doing that. Actually, you probably would use all your fingers, but that's the way I learned because Uncle Claude lost most of his fingers in a threshing machine.

I milked too. I was small and had a little help at first and dad always finished but I did do it.

Way back in the days of me milking, we also used to get squirted with milk by dad if we were misbehaving while 'helping' him in the barn. That developed into dad, 'can I have a drink of milk', so we'd stand there mouths open and get it fresh from the hoof. I've said before that kids just don't get to experience things like we used to.

I'm absolutely appalled by that student's suspension; at least it was reveresed, so the system learned something, but that kid still has to go to a school whose principal was publicly reprimanded for absurd behavior towards him. I don't envy that boy.

My European colleagues always have the trump card in making fun of American culture, and that's the fact that we Americans only speak one language, and we don't talk that one none too good neither.

I once met an astronomer couple in Chile. She was Italian, her husband was German. At home in Chile, they only spoke English at home, because their children were learning Spanish at school and didn't require the reinforcement. In Italy, they always spoke German at home, and in Germay, they only spoke Italian, except for talking to relatives outside the nuclear family, when they spoke whatever language was required. Jeez.

I've never decided where I come down on the bilingual education thing. Arnold is right in one sense -- to function in mainstream US society, you have to learn English, otherwise you are ghettoized. On the other hand, should a kid who lacks a great talent for learning language be penalized academically because he can't speak the language of instruction? The problem is one-size-fits-all education programs. You need exclusively English-language instruction, except for when it doesn't work. You need some sort of effective Plan B for kids who just can't get the hang of English.

Or another option: monolingual instruction for all kids, but alternating between languages on differnet days of the week, or differnt weeks, or some such thing. Let the English-speaking kids (and teachers) struggle through Spanish-only instruction on occasion. Our county offered only one foreign-language immersion program, in a school not very accessible to us, and only in French. J'aime le français, but it would be more of a service to students (and there would be more capable teachers available) if the program were en español.

Posted by: Tim | December 9, 2005 2:57 PM | Report abuse

On the bilingual thing: read Richard Rodriguez's many essays, and his book "Hunger of Memory." He makes a pretty convincing argument for monoligual education contributing to his success and integration into American culture, and he's the son of Mexican immigrants who grew up in California.

Posted by: jw | December 9, 2005 3:02 PM | Report abuse

Also, a friend of mine from home who moved to MA from Argentina when she was six believes kids aren't being done a favor by being allowed to speak and be taught in Spanish. She went to an elementary school where 100% of the people spoke only English, and now she speaks both languages without any accents crossing over.

I think the California experience with bilingual education (which has been the most enduring and most studied) has shown that immersion (English only) in the classroom is the most efficient method for learning English. But to disallow a student from speaking in ANY foreign tongue to a colleague outside of class is simple facism - the denial of another culture's legitimacy or worth. Prohibiting native speach is unnecessary for teaching English, and it's an unreasonable intrusion by the government into private lives. It's fine to expect that everyone should speak English where English is the general context for education or business. But no one can tell me how to talk to my friend on my own time.

I don't have a problem with classes in America being taught in English...but to not allow students to veer away from it in the halls? Or in their homes? I understand encouraging students to speak English at all times when they're initially learning it, but once they have, what's the harm in them speaking their native language when not in a formal educational setting? Most bilingual people I know can bounce back & forth with amazing ease...and I agree, Reader, I dig hearing other languages and wish I'd learned another one at a younger age...one of my good friend's 4-year old daughter is already fluent in French & English and is learning Spanish at school...

I am technically only a second generation Canadian. My grandparents were all born in the US or Germany. Most came to Canada as teens and adults in the very late 1800's. My father-in-law remembers being strapped in school for speaking German, and not English.

A bunch of cows and bulls were standing in a field. A huge gust of wind came along and all the cows fell over, but the bulls just stood there, bracing themselves against the gale.

So all the cows stood up and brushed themselves off and went back to their business. Pretty soon, a tornado blew through and all the cows were knocked to the ground again, and yet again, the bulls just continued munching on grass.

The third time, a hurricane blew through and all the cows were knocked into the next pasture. The bulls just said "moo."

Finally one of the cows walked up to one of the bulls and said, "Moo. What's the Mooing deal? How come the wind always knocks us for a big Mooing loop while you just stand there unharmed?"

The bull replied, "Moo. Isn't it obvious? We bulls wobble, but we don't fall down."

Ha ha, CowTown! That reminds me of a scene from one of my favorite Aussie TV comedy programs: A woman sends her daughter out to buy a little statue of baby Jesus for a wedding, and the daughter comes back with a bizarre arrangement of Mini BabyBels on skewers -- she thought her mother had asked for a "little statue of baby cheeses."

I take it that no one is familiar with the Land o' Lakes trick. Picture in your mind the LOL package: goofy landscape with American Indian woman kneeling and holding up a package of product at chest level. If one carefully cuts out the image of the butter box, and places a second identical picture behind the first (happily both sides of the box show the same scene), then move the overlapping images until the knees of the second image shoe through the hole you made, it appears that the LOL gal is presenting her bare breasts. To eight year old males this is the equivalent of discovering cold fusion, I kid you not.

1. Take one Lutefisk.
2. Then, get rid of it.

Wow, really sorry I missed the boodle today (got snowed/sleeted/freezing rained out of work, then at 6:50 a.m. ice on trees down the street came down and knocked out power to the neighborhood until noon. Then went out Christmas shopping and came home to tree decorating.
In reading over all the hilarity that ensued (TV Guide write-up: "Hilarity ensues on the Achenblog boodle when Joel and his in-laws swap cow jokes." Time Magazine write-up: "Midst cow poop stood the Achenblog.") I kept waiting for someone to make a cow joke referencing cow patties that Kurasowaguy might respond to, because I was already with this headline:

Guy pans moo goo.

But alas, the opportunity never came. With the proper timing, it mighta been a knee-slapper.

Posted by: mostlylurking | December 10, 2005 1:15 AM | Report abuse

Not funny ha-ha, but:

Many (dozens, nay, hundreds of) moons ago, I noticed that during wind-driven blizzards the cattle will almost always all keep walking along with the wind (like sloooow-motion tumbleweeds!) until they fetch up against a fence or some other barrier, and then huddle together for warmth.

Why not just huddle up where they were to begin with, rather than walk (sometimes miles) first?

Actually, the answers are pretty obvious, but it's kind of amusing to see it happening.

Posted by: Slyness | December 10, 2005 7:47 AM | Report abuse

There was a great boom and bust in the cattle biz in Montana and Wyoming in the late 1880's because of the behavior described by Bob S. There were a half dozen milder than normal winters which lured ranchers into the territory and caused the boom (anybody ever read Lonesome Dove?). The newcomers thrived and grew and put up fences. Then came a very severe winter. The cattle moved before the wind until they came to a fence. Then they stopped and froze to death in their tracks. In the days of open range, when they could have kept moving, they would have survived. This single winter set back the ranching industry for years.
