Why Obama Won

Pretty cool: Ice on Mars.
--
I said I'd report back on the panel discussion yesterday at my old school, but a student blogger, Jennifer Epstein, from the Daily Princetonian, has already done a great job reporting on who said what, plus has slathered the A-blog in praise, which we soak up gleefully, shamefully, ecstatically. [See also, out of the blue, this nice attaboy on a blog I never heard of. The point is we're on a HUGE praise roll.]
Epstein:
'So why is Clinton, the one-time presumptive nominee, essentially out of the race? One big reason is that her campaign didn't take Obama seriously until it was too late. Last year, Klein said, her campaign answered the question "How will she win?" with "She's already winning." The campaign made the "strategic mistake" of "assum[ing] this would be over on Super Tuesday" while the Obama camp prepared for the long haul, setting up sophisticated grassroots networks in caucus states ranging from Iowa to Idaho and Maine.'
I think everyone assumed it would be over on Mega-Duper-Whopper Tuesday. I know for a fact I wrote that a zillion times and built some complicated argument based on it. But it turned out that Feb. 5 was a wash, almost an exact tie in terms of delegates won. And it was a tie despite the fact that Clinton won so many large states. She mysteriously ignored the smallers states that held caucuses instead of primaries. In the caucus states, Obama had what you might call a passion edge.
It's interesting how, when people talk about how Obama won this thing, they always bring up Idaho. It was a Feb. 5 contest, and it had 18 delegates at stake.
Way back on Feb. 15, Dan Balz in this newspaper explained how Clinton had made a fatal strategic error:
"Among the costliest decisions Hillary Rodham Clinton's presidential campaign has made this year was to largely cede caucus states to Barack Obama. It is one that, in retrospect, baffles Democratic strategists and, even more so, the operatives on Obama's team.
"Like Obama, Clinton threw everything possible into the Jan. 3 Iowa caucuses, spending $20 million to $25 million on what turned out to be a losing effort. The experience seemed to sour the Clinton campaign on caucuses -- she has repeatedly disparaged the caucus process in public remarks -- and ever since, her team has largely ignored them in favor of states with primaries. If the Democratic race is all about delegates, as the Clinton campaign declared shortly after the Jan. 8 New Hampshire contest, the decision has given Obama an unexpected gift.
"Here is a simple way to understand the consequences of that choice. Take two states that held Super Tuesday contests on Feb. 5: big New Jersey, with 107 pledged delegates at stake, and tiny Idaho, with 18 delegates up for grabs. Clinton won New Jersey's primary and made headlines for doing so early on that night, while Obama won Idaho's caucuses long after many of those watching had gone to bed. But because of the rules of proportionality, Clinton netted just 11 more delegates than Obama from her New Jersey victory, while he gained 12 more than her by winning Idaho.
"That pattern held through other states on Feb. 5 and Feb. 9, as Obama rolled up substantial margins and, as a result, harvested delegates in numbers that belied the relatively small size of some of the states. Eight states held caucuses during that period -- Alaska, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota and Washington -- and together awarded 305 pledged delegates. By the Obama team's calculations, the split out of those states is about 209 for him and 96 for Clinton -- an advantage of 113 delegates."

Excellent commentary by Ms. Epstein. She will do well. The Times of London is already saying that Obama has won...I suppose, since it's the middle of the night there, they are making predictions that will be true when the sun comes up tomorrow.

This is worse than when following Joel over to The Trail caused some of us to lose our handles. I got caught in a time-stamp+refresh problem on the last boodle and now I'm sure when I hit submit at least 3 new comments will appear that were not here. I'm getting a headache.
Sorry for redundantly shouting New Kit on the last boodle. Couldn't see anything after 3:06, but then that wasn't actually posted at 3:06.
Blogstein would be a good boodle handle since Ms. Epstein doesn't want to use it for her blog title.

Last Sunday, T.M. Shine had the cover story on the Washington Post magazine, many of you read it. The article was about how he was laid off from his job . He didn't name the company but I don't have any qualms about pointing fingers. It was CITY LINK, a subsidiary of the Sun-Sentinel. CITY LINK is a free weekly paper, very trashy, lots of kinky personal ads and promotions for escort services, etc. Even Shine's weekly column was liberally peppered with terms not acceptable for "a family newspaper."
I said I wouldn't touch CITY LINK ever again, but out of curiosity I looked at this week's issue today when I was at the library. The cover story is "Odd Jobs: When the ax finally falls, fall back on one of these careers." The suggested careers are as follows:
*drag queen
*mermaid
*balloon twister
*sign spinner
I have to bring this to the boodle's attention. A publication that lays off half of its staff and then runs this cover story is truly bringing a new dimension to the concept of "adding insult to injury."
Terry Shine's WaPo story:

This week's City Link cover:

I had my hesitations about becoming a Sun-Sentinel subscriber in the wake of the CITY LINK fiasco. But I'm confident that CITY LINK is not long for this world--I've been expecting it to go under for a year or so already. Meanwhile, the Sun-Sentinel has one feature that was missing from the Miami Herald: Jeff MacNelly's cartoon, "Pluggers." This cartoon really hits home for the Bertocci family. My favorite one from the past I think about every time I get out my purse: "A Plugger's wallet has more receipts than money."
Today's "Pluggers:"

The governor of Michigan said Clinton should get all her states delegates because it's not Clinton's fault the Obama campaign ran a failed campaign and followed the rules.
I won't accuse the Clinton campaign of dishonesty because it's obvious they don't understand the concept and it would be a waste of time.

I cannot believe that Hillary will take this to the convention. I think this would be an excellent time for the rest of the superdelegates to come out for Obama and put her out of her misery. She really has no shame, does she? It's all about her, rather than being about the country, very distressing.

Actually, no. I was just spoofing the whole time stamp thing, is all.
Wilbrod, I actually knew politics was more fun than hockey, a lesson I learned from the 1968 and 1972 Democratic Conventions, the Vietnam War, Watergate, and the 1974 Congressional campaign I worked on in Pennsylvania, when I was chief speechwriter and advance man for a candidate (we lost).
OK, a brief report on my day: it was a very good day. The only complaint I have is that my granddaughter's commencement took 80 minutes, for a relatively small number of kids. Only got verklempt once. Scotty, the wet vac was hardly used; I'll fax it back Monday. There were 20 of us at dinner at the restaurant where my son is no. 2 chef. Food was outstanding (my wife and I knew it would be). Tomorrow afternoon is the graduation party at my granddaughter's house: 150 people invited, more or less.

I expected something like the 1/2 a vote/delegate solution that the DNC ended up with, though I was hoping for something better. Couldn't tell what that is, though.
Back to the convention and the Superdelegates, which is what I expected. I don't think Ms. Clinton is done yet, whatever one may think of her campaign strategies or tactics, and I think she's earned the right to play things out until someone can claim the nomination unequivocally.
What she and her team choose to do may be different, but I think she's still got a few things to bring to the table, as does Obama.

Mostly, your clematis armandii is beautiful. Do they give out a sweet scent? I remember either the clematis armandii or another similar type of small white flower that gives out a sweet scent come evening.
CP, love your Nigella damascene, esp. the blue ones. I love flowers that are blue. When I was a kid, I use to hang around the hydrangeas in our front yard and admired them. I was fascinated at the way they change colour. According to wiki, acidic soil gives hydrangeas its blue colour. IIRC our hydrangeas kind of change colour. In the morning, the new bloom is white with a very light blue tinge. As the day progressed and the sun became stronger, the blue became darker. By noon, when the sun is strongest, the flower turned completely blue. We also had a plant that was 6-8' tall. In the morning, the flower would just be white. When the sun came up, the flower slowly turned from white to pink. By noon, the flower is hot pink. If there's little sun on that day, the flower would just be light pink.
I remember the flower that got everybody all excited when it first bloomed was the Queen of the Night. There no lights at our front yard. The only rays of light came from the fluorescent lighting inside our house. The evenings got dark by 7:30pm. My sisters and I sat around the flower and watched it bloomed. It became full bloom by midnight and then it starts to wither.

In anticipation of my beloved offspring's arrival on Friday, I renovated my front flower bed yesterday. Delicate flowers like the beautiful ones you grow up north would shrivel and die here in the summer so I planted tough, tropical plants: pentas and lantana. I have some pictures I've been meaning to post on my blog for a while, so I will try to get that done this morning, in appreciation of the efforts of others -- I really enjoy sharing everybody's gardens. There is a simple explanation, slyness.
The applciation and server managment practices at the vendors providing the blog and comment services for WaPo.com are not rigorous.
In this case, at least one application server has been employed with the time set incorrectly, and it's passing that incorrect time back to the comment data server.
This isn't new, and since blog comments are not as time sensitive as say, a finanical transaction application (e.g. banking or stock trading), it's clearly regarded as a simple annoyance.
I've said for years that there are simple ways for the WaPo dot com folks to address these problems by using common IT/Internet best managment practices and tools. Those of us in the financial IT industry figured them out 20+ years ago where billions of dollars can turn on the exact date and time of a transaction, but clearly that level of managment capability isn't deemed important here even though it costs next to nothing these days.
I'll get off of my soapbox now.
What do you call it when you see the same exact problems and the same exact results over and over again for years?

Mornin' all...
{* brushes sawdust from eyes *}
Ivansmom... I'm with you on your take on the Clinton women's reaction. I have no problem at all with a woman running the country -- just look at the males' track record -- but I can't stand this sourpuss sour grapes attitude coming from her camp.
I watched a good deal of the debate yesterday and believe they came up with the best possible solution considering the circumstances. They get their representation, they get their punishment for breaking the rules, time to move on and start thinking of November.
Speaking of which... bc... I think Obama has more than a sporting chance to beat McCain. Obama may not "connect" with the redneck vote, but I think he's doing a fine job of channeling the sentiments of the non-redneck vote (which I hope is enough, or I'm moving to Amsterdam).
Back to the shop to make more sawdust. Beee-yoo-ti-ful here in N.E. Ohio today. The garage door is wide open letting in all the sunshine and a nice breeze to boot -- just a perfect day weather-wise.
Peace out...

i'm glad hrc hasn't let herself be pushed out of the race. that said, i'm sure most of the superdelegates will get behind obama on tuesday or wednesday, and this will all be over. as it should be.
i think the michigan and florida decisions are fair. restoring full voting would lead to more chaos in future primaries (although that may still happen if having half your delegates in an early primary seems more influential). not restoring any delegates would have given republicans an advantage, which is a bad idea in swing states. (however, obama probably can't win florida, and michigan may be stretch.)

'Morning, Boodle. I'm off in a few minutes to go help set up granddaughter's grad bash at their house.
In the meantime, I would strongly caution anybody from making any sort of statements about who can win what staes. In actuality, we have ZERO factual basis to make any such prediction. Everything that has happened to date has been based upon primary campaigns, NOT upon a head-to-head campaign, nor upon what attitudes will be after both parties hold their conventions. In my view, nobody knows squat until the end of August. So moaning about this or that likelihood is just whistling in the wind.

Howdy here at 8:57 CDT. June is bustin' out all over. I was pretty sure the rules committee would follow their attorneys' recommendation and essentially seat half the delegates. After all, that is what attorneys are for: to give cover to unpopular decisions. RD so pithily expressed my sentiments on Hilary Clinton yesterday. I've gone from being a strong supporter to strongly disapproving. It seems like almost every action she's taken during the long and painful campaign process belies yet another quality I thought she had which would be worthy of the presidency.
This last delegate fight is just too much. I get really angry at the women claiming that anything less than seating the whole Michigan and Florida delegations is an insult to democracy and sexist too. I have pretty good feminist credentials, but I also have a pretty good memory. Hilary absolutely agreed the states should be sanctioned, until the sanction acted to her detriment. How is it unfair to require states to play by rules to which you've agreed? Also, Obama played by the rules, took his name off the Michigan ballot, and didn't campaign in Florida. It seems to me that seating the whole delegations under those circumstances disenfranchises voters in those states, who didn't have the opportunity to vote for both candidates because one played by the rules. Bah.
Time to catch the rabbit and get ready for church. We are not scheduled for rain here but it sure looks like it.
And thanks to Joel for the cool Mars picture. Congratulations on the praise - you deserve more!

David Brooks at the NYT--taking a humorous jab at the end of last week at the Dems:
You say people will judge the process by its results. If that's so and Obama wins the White House (as I expect he will) then I hope the Democrats will decide the problem with their primary rules is that they are not indecisive enough. What they need, to really stretch out the voting and vet their nominee, is a series of quasi-caucus, quasi-primary, quasi-frat-pledge-week/telethon-voting contests in which registered, non-registered and amnesiac independent voters gather to sing Dr. Seuss stories to the tunes of Wagnerian opera as a means of electing semi-pledged pseudo-undecided super-delegates. That way, they'll have time to vet everything from their nominee's ingrown toenails to their dental work.
Our local Robert Seltzer, writing in today's paper, "Despite Hillary, snookered Democrats deserve more from their party"
http://www.mysanantonio.com/opinion/columnists/rseltzer/stories/MYSA.060108.OPED_1B_Seltzer0601.2849f6a.html
If the two states [Michigan and Florida] feel disenfranchised -- and they should -- they can blame an organization that usually craves their votes: The Democratic Party. ...
Oh, the people got to vote, all right, but their votes meant zilch; they should have stayed home to watch "American Idol," a show whose winners are based on votes that actually count.
Unlike its Democratic counterpart, the Republican National Committee exercised some restraint; rather than sacking and pillaging the two states -- the political equivalent of a scorched earth policy -- the RNC voted to cut the number of delegates in half. [LL: The same decision that the DNC took all of yesterday to decide, as well as the five and half hours the 28 members of the 30-member Rules Committee spent on Friday night.]
Wisdom is relative; one party was stupid, the other more so -- dumb and dumber.
Voters should have protested, hitting the streets with the passion, if not the violence, of the demonstrators in the 1960s. ...
The voters in those states deserve to be heard, but their civil rights should be restored because it is the right thing to do, not because it will tip the delegate balance toward Clinton. ...
One thing is certain: Clinton will keep fighting for the voters of Michigan and Florida, the same voters she dismissed in the early days of the battle for the nomination.
"We understand that this violates the rules of both the Democratic National Committee and the Republican National Committee," Saulius Anuzis, head of the Michigan Republican Party, told reporters after the two parties decided to hold early primaries. "We don't care."
Maybe not, but the Democrats should have.

I have a hard time seeing how Hilary could win the general election. The emergence of McCain and Obama seems like strong evidence that this election is not going to be about mobilizing the base. People may say they don't know Obama well enough, or he doesn't have enough experience, but those are issues that can be addressed in a general election campaign. The Hilary loathers, and there are legions, could not be swayed if Dick Cheney headed up McCain's VP selection team and chose himself again.

A point I keep forgetting to make. Floridians need to be mad at their own Republican led legislature not the DNC. The Florida legislature set the date for the state run primary, knowing full well the rules of both parties called for delegate reduction. Of course I never expect facts or logic to hold much sway in most of Florida. Some side effect of the underground weirdness magnet I suppose.

Hilary should have embraced the nutcracker early on. Self-deprecating humor or veiled threat? Doesn't matter, either way it works. From personal experience I can say that there is nothing wrong with both being able to cry, and being able to make people cry. Just like Tanqueray, always in moderation.

I wonder if a wapo cookie is asking folks "what time is it?" I don't know enough about it, though...
Can't have it both ways with the polls. Either they are highly suspect, in which case no one knows which states will be swing states, or they are reasonably trustworthy, in which case recent elections were indeed stolen. I'm in the camp of "not sure" about polls.
I guess it's time to brush up on and re-refresh our old rhetoric knowledge. My favorite is the old "accuse your opponent of stating something they did not state, then demolish the argument." This works quite well. Not.
I do believe that all this is a big win for the internet. Folks in large numbers have been arguing on the net in more-or-less realtime for a good decade now, and all the old rhetorical tricks that worked for years on TV are getting pretty worn. In fact, they look like creepy things that crawled out from under some turned-over rock. In broad daylight. 11:48 EDT

Ivansmom, I completely agree with you. I've always admired Hillary in many ways, and even met her a couple of times over the last 20 years or so. My feminist creds are beyond scrutiny, as well. But over time, my admiration of her has morphed into annoyance. As boodlers might remember, I was strongly supportive of John Edwards at the beginning of this go-around (seems like a century ago). After Edwards dropped out, I segued over to Hillary, but I wasn't really terribly happy about it. After a few months of that, I found myself moving into Obama's camp.
Many of my feminist friends are so apoplectic that it appears that Hillary is going to have to concede to Obama, they are threatening either to vote for McCain or sit out the election. JFC, for crying out loud! The country itself appears not to matter one whit -- just their anger. That being said, I'm not thrilled at the way Hillary's been treated by the media or anybody else, nor am I thrilled to be able to buy the Hillary Nutcracker at an airport. It sucks. But survival, and thriving at your survival is the best revenge. Keep on smiling, crack jokes about it -- it drives the other side nutz.
Ah, well, my Red Wings are gonna in all likelihood win the Stanley Cup tomorrow night on home ice. The octopi shall rule. Makes me happy, man. . . .

Thanks to either A Bea C or Bia about the article on Millennials. I think that Mudge might be right, but I think the developmental view might help here. They are really not ready for adult life until about 30 or so. Yet, they are on the job and in the military theater and swinging credit cards and making whoopee like total-grownups. (Don't hate because I say this, young ems. I think that you might ripen nicely. However, parents everywhere, take a chill pill and let them struggle a bit growing up.) Hey, it is a burden to be the total apple of parental eyes and later find out you are one of (precious) many! Benign neglect has such advantages, as does this for many gardening challenges. Harding off young shoots so they thrive applies also.

It's not fair, it seems everyone enjoys great weather while the skies have been pissing on us for the last 48 hrs. Oh well, the seeds in the garden are well watered and all the freshly transplanted seedling are doing well. My day started by having to fish out the kitchen sink drain, something that seems required about once a year. It's weird, I never find any obstruction but then the drain is fine for another year or more. So I don't know what the problem is but the solution works, so I should count my blessings.
Firsttimeblogger, in the matter of the Stanley cup the proper etiquette to follow on addressing a Leaf fan such as boko is as follow: ask him how many times "your team" has won the Big Beer Mug since the Leafs won it in '67? (1967 not 1867, they're not THAT bad). For my team, the Canadiens, I usually ask is it 10 times or 11? (It's 11). It really gets under their skin. What's the number for the Wings?

Very funny, Boko. But, actually, there are so many Swedes on the team (and I know plenty of Swedes, um, intimately), and they are so talented that I wouldn't be at all surprised if they could skate on their hands, and blindfolded, too, and still win the coveted Cup. Gotta be proud, eh?

As someone who believes that the hockey season is over when the Maple Leafs start playing golf I find it hard to get behind another team. I feel,> however:}?!! that in these troubled times I must declare for the Detroit Red Wings.
My first reason for doing so is that Detroit needs all the bucking up it can get and if any city deserves a good bucking it's Detroit. I've spent many pleasant hours in various Detroit musical venues and excellent 10 pin bowling facilities (5 pin blows!).
My second reason is that no Newfie has his name on the Stanley Cup and I think it;s high time that changed. Detroit Red Wings player Daniel Cleary is only the second Newf to play in the finals and I hope his name will grace Lord Stanley's cup this year.
No thong jokes please.

Oh, I know, LAL, and I didn't mean it sound like I was picking on you or anyone else. Your analysis is perfectly accurate, reflects the conven tional wisdom, and portrays the picture as it exists today. I don't disagree at all. Where I do disagree is whether an analysis of *anything* as it exists today means anything. IMHO, it doesn't mean anything at all. Wll Flroida be tougher than some other states? Sure. Does it mean Obama can't win it? No, not at all. It just means it'll be a bit harder than some other states. But there is nothing so special about Florida that we should make it some sort of bellweather, that's all. There is so much that is going to happen in the next 90 days that a snapshot -- even a highly "accurate" one -- at this moment doesn't mean squat. We simply Do. Not. Know. But pundits and political commentators just cannot bring themselves to say that, and as a culture, we have lost any sense of patience or tolerance for ambiguity. We seem to be incapable of saying, "I dunno...let's wait and see what happens..." But there are a lot of times when THAT is precisely the correct answer: "I dunno...let's see what happens." Guessing can be fun, but more often than not guessing is a pretty useless activity. We don't permit it in many oither lines of work, and I see no reason we should permit it in political anyalsis.

mudge, my comments about florida were based on age, ethnic, and other voting demographics that have been quantified in various fashions. the dems will have a harder time in florida against mccain, who is popular among latinos who vote more conservatively in florida than they do in the southwest and california. the age demographic favors mccain as it favored clinton in the dem primary. there is also a significant jewish population that for various reasons may not be as pro-obama as it would be pro-clinton, although it generally favors the dems. other factors may change the race between now and november, but it's definitely not a blank slate situation.

Dr G and I just returned from a wonderful mini roadtrip through Pennsylvania to celebrate (a month early) our 25th anniversary.
Stayed Friday night in Mercersburg at the delightful James Buchanan Hotel on Main St (also had a fabulous dinner there). We veered off the direct course on our way through Maryland (there is no such thing as a Direct Course on a G family road trip) into Brunswick, Md, and had a great lunch at Mommers Diner there.
After Mercersburg, we zig-zagged our way to State College. We stopped at Mr Ed's Elephant Museum on Route 30 near Caledonia State Park and wound our way up Routes 233 and 322.
We had a great Austrian dinner in at a cute restaurant called Herwig's Austrian Bistro in State College last night and stayed at the Hotel State College, which is directly across from the main entrance to Penn State on College Ave. Dave o' the Coonties... I thought of you while we were there (there were many boodle connections on this trip, I must say).
Returned today via a great road... Route 655 all the way from Belleville, Pa, to Hancock, Md. It was incredibly beautiful.. driving through a big valley and then wound through some mountain gaps, with lovely farms and towns along the way.
All in all a fine way to celebrate our 25 years of marriage. We spent lots of time laughing at things probably only he and I would think are so funny. Sometimes I can't believe I managed to stumble upon him at all. Lucky me.

Hi, TBG - wondered where you were - glad you were off having a good time.
I've spent most of today getting a new cable modem installed. It's working now - hope it continues to function. Then I went outside and pulled weeds - nothing is more satisfying to me after wrestling with computers.
Glad you like the flower pics. I wish I were a better photographer. It's overcast and windy today, threatening to rain, so I'll wait for a better day. Got better batteries for my camera too. rainforest, the clematis armandii is lightly scented - very sweet. Maybe if it were warmer here when they bloom the scent would carry, but you have to get close to smell them. I planted honeysuckle for the scent - but it's the same story, even though it blooms in the summer here.
I wish the Dem primaries and caucuses hadn't wound up being so close. What is it these days with close elections? Or maybe winner take all rules make things seem more decisive. And why does Puerto Rico have so many delegates when they can't even vote? Questions, questions, questions.

TBG, you anniversary trip sounds lovely, happy 25th! Laughing about things only the two of you find funny is one of my favorite things too.
Had a wonderful day in Boston. We met friends in the Public Garden at the bridge over the swan boats and went to an 'art walk' on Beacon Hill. Great architecture there, many hidden gardens and terraces, I don't know how the residents find their homes in the dark. The artwork spanned most media and many subjects, altho' seascapes and flowers predominated. It was a perfect weather day, warm but with enough breeze to keep from dripping as we climbed the hilly roads. Every time we go to Boston (in good weather), I fall in love with it all over again.
We visited my daughter on the way home. They've started her on the machine that flexes the knee and it is very painful. She drew a picture of what the doctor had to do to put her back together. Part of the top corner of the tibia broke off and shattered and slipped down beside the fibula. He used a bone graft, a plate and nine screws to put it back together. She has run her last marathon, or any other race. It's going to be a difficult convalescence for her. She can't drive for three months and heaven knows how she will manage the dog - he's sort of rowdy. We'll all help as much as possible. #1 daughter has already decided that the granddaughters can be useful dog-wise, and there are a lot of neighbors that #2 has helped over the years who I hope will step up and return the favor. She should be able to work at her other job, it's only a mile away and they can chauffeur her back and forth. But it's going to be a long, frustrating summer for her.

By now, it's not just a yard full of palms. It's rioting vegetation. The cycads even give an "earliest beginnings of the earth" feel.
So of course I continued a bit farther south to IKEA, where there were enough customers to make for a fair-sized riot, and Sawgrass Mills, the metastatic outlet mall. For some reason, the core is junky, the accretions lavish.

Hey everybody, I'm looking forward to seeing what time this diatribe posts.
We made it to Las Vegas, but without my computer. I don't normally get upset about much, but realizing that the black bag behind dottir 2's seat wasn't my computer prompted a loud Anglo-Saxon term to come out of me. All is well, however; she went back home and put the computer back in the house, as it had been left in the carport. And since the Internet connection here at the Luxor is $14 per 24 hours per computer, it's just as well that I have to use Mr. T's. The Luxor doesn't even haven WiFi, we're connected with an Ethernet cable for heavens sake!
We wandered around long enough to see that one can find great diversity in this town. As Mr. T observed, it's an American melting pot.
Sneaks, make sure the dottir has appropriate medication and does her exercises. TBG, sounds like a great weekend. Mudge, I hope you didn't overindulge too much. Cassandra, fifty years? We're happy to get 30 out of a pastor in my neck of the woods.

Good evening, all.
Spent a good day with the kids; a fun picnic, some football, and then an enjoyable and relaxing dinner with friends. Ok, now I'm doing laundry, but it needs to be done...
Mudge, I read Vedantam's "Dept. of Human Behavior" every week, and his series during this election cycle's been quite interesting. Good to know I'm not the only one enjoying it...
TBG, congrats and happy anniversary to you and Mr. T. Sounds like you had a really enjoyable weekend. Please pass along my regards to that lucky chap o' yours...
Now, I thought we'd have some idea about how the whole Dem presidential candidate nomination process is going to play out after this past weekend's meetings, but frankly, I can't say that I really know with any certainty much more than I knew on Friday evening.
I know that the Dems expect to win in November, but high expecations seem to be a road to problems lately. The Patriots expected to go 19-0 and win the Super Bowl (sorry, you Pats fans); Mitt Romney, Mike Huckabee, and Rudy Giuliani were all so worried about Fred Thompson that they didn't watch McCain's campaign closely until it was too late, all-around singer David Archuleta expected to beat rocker David Cook in American Idol, and Hillary Clinton expected to be the Dem candidate for President.
For 2008:
In - fighting like there's no tomorrow
Out - swagger
I hope 2008 won't be the year of political paranoia, but one might make a case for it.

Surgery and reab of that nature - I've never been through it myself, but I've heard stories.
All of the folks I know who have been through something like that considered it a success in the end, but it wasn't easy.
I'm sure she'll be fine.
cassandra, I do hope you're OK, too.

TBG, sounds like your road trip was very enjoyable. Happy 25th anniversary. A major accomplishment I'm still trying to reach.
I know those areas you traversed having been to all. My mother went to Penn Sate (as did my aunt, uncle and grandfather) at State College. She returned for post-grad classes and other events many times, often taking us with her. Such a picturesque setting.
There is so much beauty in our country! We just have to, as they say, get out there. I've now planned another mountain trip around July 4th as a birthday present for my sweetie. Really, it's kind of nice when the kids just don't want to go with you. We still have plenty of family time.
Bad Sneakers...sending healing thoughts to your daughter.

Hi! It's a beautiful morning here in this sector of TGWN.
That's wicked injury your daughter sustained B. Sneakers. It's very much like a dancer friend of mine suffered when she playfully performed one those 'jump 'n spin' thingys at a party. Unfortunately she was wearing sneakers so when she came down her foot stayed put while she spun around it. Fortunately she had already decided to go into teaching.
I don't know if my little anecdote is helpful so I'll beam healing thoughts your dots way.

'Morning, Boodle. We had 2 inches in the rain gauge this morning.
I can faithfully report that the bluejay chicks are growing like weeds. Now we often see them sitting on the edge of the nest, looking out upon the world. They have grown tremendously in the past week, and have feathers, though they still don't look like the can fly. And they no longer squawk all the time; they've been content to just observe. And I wonder if they haven't become acclimated to our comings and goings so close to them; they ignore us completely though we're often within 2 feet of the nest. And my wife hasn't been attacked lately, though she is still very wary of the mother bird.
We brought home a ton of leftovers yesterday: ribs, chicken, cole slaw, potato salad. Our kids made up two plates last night, and I put up three lunches for me to take to work, and there's still enough left for two dinners. The caterers also put out a bottle of BBQ sauce on each of the 9 tables, and we brought two of them home virtually intact. Couldn't bring myself to try to bring home the keg of Bud, nor the three bottles of vodka on the drinks table. (The bottle of Absolut vodka went pretty fast; the Wolfschmidt's remained.) They went through more than 350 pounds of ice keeping everything cold.
All right, onward and upward. Scotty, Cassandra, you folks up yet?

Hey, you all,
In thinking about all the political opinions from pundits, I wonder what The Joy Boys take would have been, especially The Colonel. Back in the working days, Harden & Weaver's radio show helped me to get myself together in the early morning with their foolish, halarious nonsense.
Weatherwise, looks like another sunny warm day here in the great state of northern Virginia.

Sounds like we'll have a heat wave here by the end of the week. Typical New England weather, two weeks ago we were cold and wet, now it's summer. Scotty, welcome to the joys of homeownership! Happy Monday (ugh) everyone.

Oh well, we have plenty of time to dress and get breakfast before we trek the mile and a half to the convention center before 8.
Last year, this convention was in Boston (and I got to meet Sneaks and "S"!). Mr. T commented that the convention itself is about as far from our hotel this year as it was last - but this year we walk, instead of taking the ferry ride across Boston Harbor.
Thanks for the tips, mostly. Did I mention that the only reason I came is that we're doing a helicopter tour of the Grand Canyon on Wednesday? I thought I did.
Interesting that Ted Kennedy is having surgery at Duke, rather than closer to home. I didn't realize Duke was that high on the list for neurosurgery.

I haven't been to State College since 1971. At the time, the Creamery was thriving. They sold local apples in the fall, too. For some reason (probably its isolated location), the equivalent Creamery at the University of Georgia was less busy.

Reprint of a Houston Chron article in our paper today, titled on B3 as "It's squabbling vs. unity as Texas Dems convene this week, Clinton and Obama forces jockeying over delegates and party chair may face a challenger."
http://www.mysanantonio.com/news/metro/stories/MYSA060208.3B.demsconvention.389a738.html
The gist of the article is that this coming Friday's Texas Democratic convention will be contentious. Texan Clinton chairman [and longtime friend] Garry Mauro said Clinton told him she will speak to the convention Friday. Should be interesting.
Meanwhile, as far as the upcoming Texas GOP convention, John McCain will pass. Who will speak in his stead? None other than former presidential contender and former Massachusetts governor Mitt Romney. Interesting, no?

Slyness... that's why I'd rather stay in a Best Western... those "luxury" places nickel and dime you to death. The $80 room at the BW has a comfy bed, a clean bathroom and FREE WiFi. I enjoyed the Vedantam piece. I have an excellent grasp of women's suffrage history, as befits a former League of Women Voters county president and longtime civic advocate for women's issues, and I think the article is right on target. I find no fault with its accurate summary of the history of the 19th amendment or the larger problem of race vs. suffrage. It is, of course, intended to give a brief glimpse rather than an exhaustive discussion of the particularities of the history of the women's movement. The article does an excellent job of raising what many feminists have long considered troubling: the historic divide between feminism (particularly suffrage) and civil rights, on both sides, which has weakened both causes.

I don't see how describing Vedantam's work as "a real stinker" would make mature adult readers receptive to whatever arguments you may be amassing there, Linda.
Certainly makes me less inclined to read it at all, much less give it any consideration whatsoever.

Ah do b'lieve Ah feel a song comin' on,
and it goes
a little sumpthin'
lahk this:
It's astounding,
Time is fleeting
Madness takes its toll.
But listen closely, not for very much longer
I've got to keep control.
I remember doing the Time Warp,
Drinking those moments when
The Boodle would hit me and the blog would be calling.
Let's do the Time Warp again...
Let's do the Time Warp again!
It's just a jump to the left,
And then a step to the right,
With your hands on your hips
You bring your knees in tight.
But it's the pelvic thrust that really drives you insane,
Let's do the WaPo Time Warp again!
It's so dreamy, oh fantasy free me,
So you can't see me, no, not at all.
In another dimension, with voyeuristic intention
Well-secluded, I see all.
With a bit of a mind flip.
You're there in the time slip,
And nothing can ever be the same.
You're spaced out on sensation, like you're under sedation.
Let's do the Time Warp again!
Well, I was walking down the street just a-having a think,
When a snake of a guy gave me an evil wink.
He shook me up, he took me by surprise
He had a pickup truck and the devil's eyes.
He stared at me and I felt a change.
Time meant nothing, never would again.
Let's do the Time Warp again!

politics and gardening threads. my favorite things!! tbg, so glad you and dr. g had a nice 25th celebration. thanks for taking the time to answer my email re: posting to the boodle. turns out i wasn't the only one with the problem.
will only be able to drop by once in a while -- but i so missed the boodle it is nice ot check in and read about all the same folks, and the goings on and musings in boodlers' lives.
i did post a longish comment about where i am, gardening, etc the other nite, but it never showed up. will attempt to beat the migraine god by reformulating post:
am still in williamsburg: i moved in with a friend who had a large home that was largely empty upstairs. i take care of her dogs in exchange for all rent, utilities, etc. she even pays the cable connection! she makes a ton of money and has refused my offers of pitching in financially.
this has been a most welcome turn of events -- and it put the move to the west on permanent standby. i really didn't have enough money to move and "make it."
julie (my friend) has also allowed me complete reign over the front and back yards re: gardening. and her neighbor wanted a new perennial bed. so this past spring i tilled, composted, planted and mulched two brand new beds. the neighbor's perennial garden is mostly in the "sleep" phase of the "sleep, creep, leap," metaphor -- but enough annuals give it some color. keeping her dogs out is proving to be a problem.
i put what was left of my mature perennial garden in the front. it looks very nice this year. no pics yet.
i really enjoyed the garden pics posted in this boodle. so nice!!
the bed i tilled in our own backyard turned out to be truncated this year. i was diagnosed with breast cancer (confirmed on april fool's day, of course). i had little time to put stuff in before the surgery. so it's all tomatoes (black krim, green zebra, beefmaster, and 3 surviving heirloom small tomatoes -- julie's dogs got 3 of them). i just threw in tons of annual for color.
i had a double mastectomy on may 14th and will probably be starting chemo in july. but the cancer was caught very early (stage 1b) and so no worries about long term survival.
as far as hrc is concerned, everybody has already said what i believe. she did lose the nomination back in february, and as a woman, i am quite turned off by her shrouding herself in the victim mantel.
i always thought the point of feminism was being given the oppotunity to the same resources and chances that men have always had -- and then competing as equally as possible. certainly i'm not saying sexism isn't a problem anymore -- it most certainly is - and yes, there were many in the media who were quite sexist and nasty to hillary -- but this was her nomination to lose. she was the front runner from the beginning.
the loud cries of "victim" from some of her supporters strikes me as really hypocritical and ugly.
i do think the press is amplifying the number of women who feel this way though. my sister drove past the dnc meeting on friday and said there was quite a crowd there. but i don't think they represent a majority.
there are some really bad feelings now. i do believe they'll fade as the general election really gets underway. if these women have just one reason to get truly behind obama, they need think no further than who mccain would put on the surpeme court -- and what this could mean for abortion rights.
mudge, am so glad you're granddaughter's graduation turned out nicely. i do wish we could get two inches of rain down here!! we're still in a drought. we got some catch up -- but it's still pretty dry.

There's a website with the popular vote counts from all the primaries and caucuses. And it has a spread sheet where you can mix and match which category of votes you want to count. Under the most permissive counting possible, Hillary has nearly 18 million votes and over 191,000 more than Obama.
http://www.fivethirtyeight.com/2008/06/popular-vote-scenario-tester.html
In the very critical category of votes by people not allowed to vote in the general election (US territories including Puerto Rico) the Hillary advantage is 265,689 to 125,615 accounting for almost 75% of her edge.
I modestly propose that Hillary be put on the ballot as the Democratic nominee in Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, and US Virgin Islands. She can then spend the next four years proclaiming herself President of Places Not Counted. Michigan and Florida could be half members in that club.

thanks so much mudge and scotty! am really okay. my family is rife with breast cancer (both grandmothers died of it, my mother is 20 year survivor of same type i have) so i wasn't the least bit surprised when it came knocking on my door. i was really surprised at how prepared i was emotionally. i always knew i would get it.
mudge -- i hope your friend is doing well. my niece is a marathon runner. she knows a woman who was undergoing chemo for breast cancer AND training for a race at the same time. i think i'll be okay.
i will get to wear some cool wigs and, after nearly 50 years as a brunette with lots of curls, am thinking of brown-aurburn hair cut in a straight page boy --kind of like victoria beckham!!!
i may be winking in and out of the boodle a lot -- but i guess that's better than a year's absence!

nelson,
Good luck with the treatment. You sure sound like you have the right attitude. Your friends in the Boodle are cheering for you.

FYI, Shankar Vedantam and Kimberle Crenshaw, a constitution/civil rights scholar, are having a chat on that race versus gender thing for the last 40-some minutes, at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2008/06/01/DI2008060100724.html .
Althoigh who knows? perhaps it's a real stinker.

nelson, my thoughts are with you. I have a good friend in Sweden who has had breast cancer and has so far survived quite nicely for more than 5 years. Her mother had it, too, at the same age (diagnosed at 52), and she's still alive (well, with a fair amount of dementia at the age of 86, but, still. . .). You know you can count on the boodle for support.
Now, back to the mines.

And on the other side, counting only primary (and not caucus) results from states and DC and ignoring Michigan, Florida, and US territories gives Obama a half million vote lead.
It is so Democratic to let everybody keep their own score and declare themselves winners.

nelson, great to hear from you. It's been quite a year for you - glad you're sounding positive and hope things continue on that note. I'm especially glad to hear you're gardening - I know how much it hurts not to be able to do that. I was thinking about the "sleep, creep, leap" adage just the other day - I have 2 clematis in creep mode and several in leap.
Bo Diddley was a huge influence on rock and roll. RIP.
Thanks, SD, for the sheep to sweater story. I'll leave others to that, thank you very much.

Nelson, it is so good to hear from you. Your gardening, like that of other Boodlers, is an inspiration to me. Good luck on your continued recovery, and enjoy those cool wigs. Remember we're here to help out should you need us, even if only with encouraging words.

nelson - I'm sorry to hear that you have to go through this treatment. It sounds like you are exactly where my sister-in-law is with her treatment for breast ca. I'm glad you have got a garden with a carte blanche to go wild. That sounds like good therapy to me.
Posted by: Kim | June 2, 2008 2:13 PM | Report abuse
nelson, it's so great to hear your're doing well. Thoughts - many people's thoughts - are with you. You'll look great no matter what you choose to do, because people see what's in your heart far better than what's on your head.
Bo Diddley, he'll be missed.
I once hung out with him on the sidewalk outside a National airport terminal at about 7:00 AM after having seen him play the night before (Blues Alley, IIRC). Some of the guys working at the terminal were hanging out and talking with him, and when I stopped and told him how much I enjoyed last night's show, he thanked me and started singing "Who do You Love?", smiling at me. All of us - the guys working the terminal and myself - all joined right in and sang with him all the way to the end. Loudly. Danced and played air guitar, too.
Then all of us laughed, clapped each other on the backs and shook hands, and resumed our lives with big smiles on our faces. Even though we all have different lives and come from different backgrounds, sometimes it takes something as little as a song and the right guy to lead it for us to remember that we're not so different under these hats we wear.
As I've said before:
Bo Diddley: Nice guy, heckuva hat.

Nelson, so glad you are posting again, I wish you well in your recovery - it is great to read your cheery post but remember this is a good place to post on those days when you are feeling so positive.
I am sending you down the calm I experienced today at lunch, cloudless skies here and warm. Walked around the historic waterfront area one block from where I work. The air was full of lilacs, chestnuts, wisteria and a multitude of other spring blooming trees and shrubs. The homes in this area are all about 150 years or so, many with big porches and old trees - just lovely and good way to spend lunch and restore the spirit.

again, thanks again everyone. will try to be a better member of the family and show up once and a while!
and now for something completely different: did anyone watch the horrific nat geo special on "stonehenge decoded" last nite? and neil silberman was worried about indiana jones ruining the image of archaeology!!!
the magazine article was more balanced, provided more scientific data for the dates, burial remains, etc. and allowed for other opinions that de-emphasized parker pearson's view that stonehenge was just about ancestor worship.
it could easily be about ancestor worship, among other things.
for him to take his knowledge about ancestor worship from madagascar and lay it on top of stonehenge is a pretty big jump.
from what little i've read (which is admittedly precious little -- i'd need to see a lot more to really be informed -- but what the heck!) there could be a variety of conclusions drawn from his work.
his real genius was in finally, finally moving beyind stonehenge itself and undertake a more regional approach. i'm surprised at the length of time it took british archaeologists to move beyond stonehenge as being unique in its environment.
in american archaeology, someone would have gotten a grant for a regional survey and testing program for the area around a monumental site long ago. huge monuments like this tend not to exist without outlying sites and manifestations.
i'm very happy to see someone finally putting stonehenge into a regional picture. and the forensic work -- what tiny amount i've read about -- is really quite good.
but it's not good archaeology to lay out such an overarching opinion as with what we do know. it's especially not good science to transfer burial and ancestor veneration practices from a modern group of people in madagascar to a culture that existed 5000 years ago and that we only know of through the material remains.
one needs to be very cautious in drawing such extreme conclusions from what is still sketchy data.
the tv program was unwatchable to me. from made-up language and hair styles to images of a howling mob scene at the summer solstice . . . ouch!!!!!
stonehenge ain't decoded. we just know more about how the other sites in the area tie in with it -- and the existence of a large village/town has been found.
my 2 cents worth. i'll take indy jones and crystal skulls -- which we all recognize to be fun and fiction -- over what national geographic is pushing.

Excellent rant nelson, it's got to be good for you to get that blood going.
Mudge and Martooni have been pretty mellow lately so we had to rely on omni and yello for our much needed dose of spite and venom. Now, thinking of it ManyTims, Frosti and Ivansmom have contributed some pretty good umbrage too. But eh, you just can't have too much umbrage, all bits are welcome.
The tomato-eating dogs, are they big ones? I'm trying to teach the Puppy to "respect" the gardens and flower beds. He is starting to get the concept of flower beds but he can't figure out why bare soil and geotextile are out of bound. Specially when the LiquidCat can go wherever she pleases. I explained to him that the cat doesn't leave behind a line of tracks the size of teacup saucers and 3"-deep but he doesn't get it, yet.
Let's just say that it is a work in progress.

bc, that's an amazing story. I think Who Do You Love is one of my favorite rock and roll songs - not that I would ever had had the nerve to sing it along with Mr Diddley himself! I saw Tom Rush, a folk singer, perform it solo a couple of years ago, and it's my all time favorite Quicksilver Messenger Service song (it was the one whole side of their Happy Trails album, which shows how old I am).

Larry Pinkney on Obama:
This is a man who has enjoyed the fruits of America at the blood and expense of Black Americans and others, but who has paid virtually no dues.
This is a man whose father had also enjoyed the fruits of university schooling in America but subsequently returned to his native Kenya.
This is a man, who also like his father before him, neither served in a branch of the US military nor in any organization in America opposed to US military adventurism.
This is a man who as a deeply corporate military industrial complex US Presidential candidate, has called for "unilateral" US military actions in other nations. [And why not? After-all, his father, himself, or his wife and children were not and will not be the ones killing and being killed.]
This is a man who, in Chicago, pretended to support the human rights of the Palestinian people but who is now known to be a huge supporter of the apartheid Zionists and their powerful and insidious political lobby in America.
This is a man who dares opportunistically to feign admiration for the late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., but does not share the collective memory, pain and deep concerns of Black America, other people of color, or even of numerous white Americans for that matter - in the ongoing struggle for equality and justice in this nation.
This is a man who has de facto contempt for the past supreme sacrifices made by thousands of activists from so-called "militant" organizations such the Organization of Afro-American Unity (OAAU), the Student National Coordinating Committee (SNCC), the Black Panther Party (BPP), Students For A Democratic Society (SDS), the American Indian Movement (AIM), the Revolutionary Action Movement (RAM), etc.
This is a man who is silent about the need for reparations for Black American descendants of slaves and the genocide of the indigenous so-called "Indian" peoples on this continent. He is the consummate opportunist who, in reality, cares nothing about the horrors inflicted upon Black, Brown, and Red peoples in this nation, and has repeatedly signaled that he plans to inflict even more "unilateral" military horrors upon various nations and peoples of the world.
This man, Barack Obama, is but a more articulate, younger, and shinier version of the current and infamous US Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, adorning himself dangerously and abundantly in superficiality and double-speak.
