A Musical Interlude

Note to the Boodle: Due to a pending upgrade to our blogging software, our comment function will be out of commission until late Wednesday. We apologize for the interruption in your conversation and hope you'll pick up where you left off tomorrow.

A guest post by Rachel Manteuffel:

Just before he left for international adventures, Joel told me he had always hoped to expand this blog's coverage of important issues such as musical theater. Well, no, he didn't. But I figure it'd be nice revenge for leaving this place to Achenrot if he returns to find that his blog is a cabaret, only a cabaret. (I hope your vacation is worth it, sir.) And the best way for you guys to register your displeasure with Joel's abandonment is to pretend you LOOOOOVE this new all-musical format. "Enough with the science," you might comment.

My dad and I were watching a video clip last week of Julie Andrews singing "Send in the Clowns" (by Stephen Sondheim), and he mentioned that the song had never made any sense to him. Why are clowns so desirable to this woman? Why is she so sad, exactly? Who is in mid-air? He had heard it a bunch -- it's one of the few songs from the last 50 years to be popular both on stage and radio -- and could only conclude that the song is a downer. I spent many minutes waving my hands and saying "See, she's an actor, and so there are actual, literal clowns around, but not circus clowns, and the clowns are like an insult that she's saying to herself..." without much effect.

So I came to the conclusion: Send in the Clowns is a beautiful song ruined by good singers. Listen to Andrews sing it (starting at 7:20). She's got a great voice and superb training. But that polish makes her seem more sad than angry, like she's revisiting the situation after years, when the anger has abated. That circumstance doesn't call for clowns.

What Send in the Clowns needs is a bad singer. Listen to Judi Dench sing it (starting at 1:30). I sent my dad this clip and he got it right away.

She's a broken woman. A nova-ing star. Someone who is razor-sharp about her own heartbreak, as it is happening. Desiree, the character, sees her situation as a playwright would and discovers that she is living a farce. Sure, it's funny, but she isn't the main character, who in a farce is ritually humiliated and ends up happy. She's the clown, the one mocked for wanting what she wants and who ends up frustrated. Send in the clowns, so the invisible audience knows to laugh at me.

And holy hot dogs, that's Judi Dench. She could crush any one of us like a bug. But here she is, her heart so broken that she is singing a song even though she knows she can't really sing. She aims for notes she can't sustain. She lets us hear her voice be not good enough. Judi Dench lets us watch her fail.

There's a little context from the play that's good to know. She had a fling with a man who proposed, and she didn't want to be tied down and so turned him down, even though she was pregnant with his child. He comes to see her 20 years later and tells her about his ridiculous, empty-headed 18-year-old wife, and she reminds him what real love and women of substance are, and offers him the rest of her life. He says no. He likes the idiot. Oh, and his marriage is still unconsummated after a year. He's turning down Judi for that.

You didn't really need to know that, though. You can see it in the clip. And because this is a phenomenal song -- but not when sung by Julie Andrews or Frank Sinatra or Judy Collins or Barbra Streisand or Grace Jones (Wikipedia says Jones's version is disco, so, even though I haven't heard it, I'm confident saying it doesn't work) -- Judi Dench is a better singer than any of them. Hope for the rest of us who sound like the first episode of American Idol tryouts.

A fella leaves his blog for a few days, look what happens. Total degeneration.

Hi from Lewiston, ME (home of Bates College -- another place we couldn't possibly afford).

Excellent kit, Raitch.

This weekend was "Into the Woods (Jr.)" Weekend. And the ScienceKids (or are they PlainKids when I use this handle) are big fans of Sweeney Todd. We're are getting to be all about the Sondheim in this house.

That clip is breathtaking, Rachel.

A cabaret sounds just right while Joel is gone. I promise I won't sing though.

Now I have got to go search for some coffee. Paper towels? How could I have forgotten that.

The best version of Send in the Clowns is done by Krusty the Clown.

Hi Joel! Hey Raitch... are we going dark at noon? A Kit with no Boodle?

Great vocal acting comparisons. Dench has it, Andrews merely sounds nice and looks pretty.

JA, Keep going up 95 another hour or so to Waterville and check out Colby College. NukeBro's done quite well with what he learned there.

Finally. After putting up with this place for all these many months we get to talk showtunes.

This is one of those songs that I find disturbing to listen to. For whenever I hear this song I am reminded of the 1975 Judy Collins version. Or, more exactly, I am reminded of 1975. Or, to be really truly exact, I am reminded of being 13 years old.

In other words, the song provokes in me an unpleasant sensation forever associated with the fear of cystic acne.

But my own queasy reaction aside, I agree with Rachael that this is an anguished song in need of an anguished voice.

To me, "the clowns" represent fake cynical people. People who always let the singer down. Therefore, I have always seen the the song as being an ode to futility, alienation, and existential angst.

So it is no wonder it hit me so hard when I was a freshly minted teen.

And is probably also why it has never really caught on as a party tune.

Good morning, Boodlers.

I am moderately concerned by the notion that the Boodle will be shut down for upgrades at noon today and remain so for 24 hours.

It's tempting to ask to reivew the upgrade plan, including those for backing up the data (it *is* all property of WaPo, is it not?) beforehand, plans for the notifications and upgrades themselves, workplan milestones and estimated durations of tasks and who's responsible for them, any backout and contingency plans in case it all goes catty-wumpus, the meet-me-lines for discussing status of the upgrade and for problem resolution (much less the decision trees and call lists for bringing in folks to assist with said problems), the test plan to ascertain if the upgrade actually was a success or not, and the notification tree based on that.

Based on my experience with the WaPo sites, I think this kind of planning might not be on the table for the blog comment systems.

bc

Posted by: bc | August 5, 2008 10:06 AM | Report abuse

I don't think the upgrade will be anywhere near as challenging as, for example, designing a "STOP" sign.

But I do hope the designers/upgraders consult Panabasis and Tibor Szegy-Legy.

All I have to do to get my wife to veto a musical is to say that it's by Sondheim. We saw Into The Woods many years ago and while the first act was very entertaining, the second act was a complete discordant mess.

We also saw Neil Patrick Harris in Assassins. Definitely the most bizarre musical conceit ever and that covers a lot of ground. Again, the whole show just didn't tie together.

Posted by: yellojkt | August 5, 2008 10:23 AM | Report abuse

Wow. Great kit, Rachel. (Evangeline is gonna be soooo pi$$ed when she hears I have a crush on both you and Judi Densch.) (Have been working on the Densch thing for a while anyway.)

Having never seen the show I was unaware of the context of this song, though like everyone else I've been listening to it (and not understanding it) for what? 30-some years, ever since Judy Collins sang it on the "Judith" album (credited by some as the reason Sondheim won it as best song that year).

But you are absolutely right: the song is not comprehensible as a stand-alone; it must have the background context-- and then must be sung accordingly. As for the Donna Summer disco version--well, words fail me.

Also, a similar example of a song that sung by a "bad singer" is the classic "I've Grown Accustomed to Her Face" song (recited?) by Rex Harrison in "My Fair Lady." Like Densch, Harrison is NOT a singer, and knew it, so never really tried to sing that song -- but like Densch, he carries it off in a way no one else could have.

However, the examples stop well short of William Shatner singing "Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds." *Really* well short. InCREDibley well short.

Thank you, Rachel, for this excellent topic. It is one which has occasionally been touched on in the Boodle but has been oddly absent from the Kits. An oversight no doubt, and I'm sure Joel is grateful that you've corrected it.

The huge difference Judi Dench brings to "Send In the Clowns", and what gives it its distinction, is that she's not singing the song at all. She's acting it, and she's a great actor. She happens to be acting with rhythm and melody, but the melodic content of the song is the least important part of the performance, and she makes its rhythm part of her acting rhythm. Any good or great singer can sing this very well, and many singers have. I can enjoy and respect those performances, but even an intelligent singer who understands all the nuances of the song can't convey it with the same emotional depth as a great actor. Sadly, many people who sing it are neither competent singers nor great actors, and those are not good performances.

People always think of musicals as having happy endings, or being primarily cheerful, but lots of them aren't and some pack a punch. Sondheim likes that style. In addition to "Sweeney Todd", look at some earlier musicals. "West Side Story" - Romeo & Juliet. Boy gets girl, boy dies. "Most Happy Fella" - except he isn't. "South Pacific" - romance founders on racism. Even happy musicals often have a moment of loss which usually provides the best songs in the show.

Yello, we (the StoryFolks, PlainFolks, and ScienceFolks, etc) have to disagree with you about "Into the Woods." The first act is wonderful, but at that point, it's just fractured fairy tales -- a fun, light-hearted romp, but with little depth or resonance, except for the deepening relationship between the baker and his wife. The second act gets into the kind of darker human thoughts and feelings that are part of the subtext of real folktales and fairy tales. The things you always suspected about Prince Charming, much more cleverly done than in Shrek-the-Sequel. The obvious consequences of killing one giant out of a couple. The shaky ethics of Jack's thievery. The foolishness of a girl/woman depending on her beauty to win her happiness from the kind of man who sees only that deep. And so on.

For a really great storytelling mash-up that gets at the universality of folktales, sometime you have to go hear my friend Bill Mayhew (Famous Storyteller) telling Don Giovanni as a Jack tale. http://www.voicesintheglen.org/tellers/bmayhew/

I have to defer to your semi-professional expertise, but all I get get out of ITW Act 2 is a lot of characters running around and a very ham-handed allegory about the dangers of nuclear weapons. It just reeks of anti-Reagan hysteria.

I was going to mention DR HORRIBLE as a fine future post topic in Achenblog's new all-musical format, because hey -- it worked for Joss Whedon (twice if you count the musical episode of BUFFY).

Other fave musicals of mine:
GIGI
MY FAIR LADY
THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE (more Julie Andrews)
AVENUE Q
INTO THE WOODS (since you mention Sondheim)
VICTOR/VICTORIA (still more Julie Andrews)

Conspicuously lacking? Anything by Andrew lloyd Weber. Not a fan.

Musicals with worse second acts than Into the Woods:

Big River
The Mystery of Edwin Drood

Classic Musical Theater (i.e. from before I was born or thereabouts):

West Side Story
Fiddler On The Roof
Cabaret
A Chorus Line

Contemporary (past ten or fifteen years)

Avenue Q
Spring Awakening
Mamma Mia

Under appreciated:

Altar Boyz
High Fidelity

Real Stinkers:

By Jeeves
The Woman In White (both ALW)

Vastly Overrated:

Cats
The Lion King
The Producers

For Andrew Lloyd Weber you have to go with either Evita or Jesus Christ Superstar. When Tim Rice was his Bernie Taupin.

I will admit, I liked "Cats" a lot. I am a fan of Eliot's "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats." I liked the touring production at National Theatre a lot more than the Broadway cast recording, which sounded to me like a bunch of recorded auditions for the performers' next roles -- lots of ability, no investment in the content of the song/poem. My sister and I are particularly fond of "Macavity", and thus we liked the bluesy take on that poem. Old Deuteronomy was boring, but that is true of the poem as well as the song and character. I spent a lot of time admiring the musculature of the dancers, both male and female, out of envy more than lust. If I had legs like that, I would be one heck of a cyclist. Anyway, I have always been fascinated by the way you can perceive muscles and tendons moving to accomplish some other action. There was a lot of that on display in Cats. I'll grant you, the music was a tad vapid, but the words were written by a librettist of not-inconsiderable ability.

Les Miz is pretty archetypal. Just hearing the name gets you humming the very insidious tune cootie. It's only fault is that it is perhaps a bit too long, but what are you going to do with Hugo?

I just saw a revival of it recently. Very bummed that Lea Salonga had been replaced by an understudy.

And if you are ever in London (or Vegas) catch We Will Rock You for the sheer camp value. Queen was never so kitschy.

Or else the "upgrades" are thwarting the spontaneous flow of conversation so integral to Boodle comment. Yes, I bet that's it.

No, wait...

Some of my best friends are in an anarcho-syndicalist commune...

That's better...

Slyness, I never realized until this moment, when I read the Wiki you linked to on A Little Night Music, that it was based on Bergman's Smiles of a Summer Night. That's one of my favorite Bergman flicks, and I have a book with four Bergman screenplays in it, from my college days; SOASN is one of them. (Never saw "Night Music," so otherwise wouldn't know.)

Learn somethin' ever' day 'round here.

If I may be so bold; A sticky note placed on or reasonably near the servers detailing how to properly set the time on said servers would go a long way toward easing this embarrassing situation. Just sayin'.

Ok, who asked for the auto-filling of the Name: field? As "auto-filling" comes before Bold, Italics, and Underlining, the techs did that first and never got around to the rest of the list.

It is 3:42 here...

Glad I found something new for you to learn today, Mudge.

I hope I'm around if and when we get back on kit to talk about musicals. The last one I saw was Little Women. I don't recall any of the songs, and they messed with the plot, so I wasn't happy. Why, why, WHY do people think they can improve on plots?

Wow, byoolin is going crazy over at the Celebritology blog with some very funny stuff.

Running for the bus.

I saw "Little Woman" which had both Sutton Foster and Maureen McGovern in it. Both were terribly wasted. The show had the most lackluster forgettable songs of about any musical I've seen recently. Can't remember a one.

Posted by: yellojkt | August 6, 2008 4:54 PM | Report abuse

Yello, that must have been the same production I saw here in Charlotte. I only went because my cousin's kids, who are mad for musical theater, asked me to get the tickets. I enjoyed their company, but yeah, what a waste of talent.

Tonight, Mr. T and I are going to see Much Ado about Nothing. I've never seen it and am looking forward. We don't get out much.

slyness,
Sutton Foster didn't do the tour, but you were lucky enough to catch Maureen McGovern.

New kit!

Posted by: TBG | August 6, 2008 5:14 PM | Report abuse

Yes, Maureen was the reason my cousins wanted to see the show.

Mom didn't much care for "The Incredibles" or "Wall-e" but did like "Seven Years in Tibet". I will try "Spirited Away" with its bathhouse of the gods.

It's now full summer. Onshore breeze, but hot anyway. The ocean is ready for tropical storms.
