Cooking for the Snowpocalypse

Soups, stews and desserts were what Washingtonians cooked during the big blizzard last weekend, according to local cooks who responded to a tweet from Food editor Joe Yonan.

Stephanie Spear wasn't one of the thousands who rushed to the supermarket for supplies. She used the day to clean out her fridge. Spear, her roommate and best friend had breakfast for dinner: Southern biscuits, bacon, eggs and fruit. The meal was paired with wine, served in Spear's special glasses designed to hold an entire bottle of wine.

Jon Hussey, in contrast, did stock up. He lined up for an hour and a half at the Harris Teeter on Pennsylvania Avenue to make sure he had everything for his "Snowpocalypse Guinness Stew." The dish calls for organic beef (he got his at Springfield Farm in Parkton, Md.), good beef stock, stout, red wine, potatoes, carrots and onions. "I'm not sure if it was the beef or if my wife and I were just stir-crazy, but we both agreed this was my best batch yet," Hussey told us.

Olga Berman got creative with her comfort food. She made a Vietnamese-inspired matzo ball soup. The broth is scented with coriander, cloves, star anise and ginger. Berman then added ribbons of carrots, shredded Napa cabbage and matzo balls made from a Manischewitz mix. For the recipe, visit her blog, Mango & Tomato.

A sweet recipe came from reader Jennifer Ricklin. Her snow-day cooking: eggnog cupcakes. The recipe includes dark rum and store-bought eggnog (she prefers organic). But our grand prize for snow cooking goes to Cathy Barrow, who blogs at Mrs. Wheelbarrow's Kitchen. She made Edna Lewis's cornbread from "The Taste of Country Cooking," Rancho Gordo black beans, poached eggs, a rustic apple pie, Chocolate Swirl Cinnamon Marshmallows to give away for the holidays, and cocktails (!): Spiced Glogg with Port Wine & Cointreau from New York recipe site food52.

Snow days, it turns out, aren't so bad after all.
