A taste of what will be at area farmers markets this week:
THIS JUST IN/LAST CALL
At today’s FreshFarm Market in Penn Quarter, shoppers will receive free cups of hot apple cider. Garner’s Produce of Westmoreland County is in the for the last few weeks of the season, and will have hearty greens, winter squash, potatoes, broccoli and more; Quail Creek will have macaroon gift bags ($25), fig bread and Christmas wreaths ($35); Everona Farm will have lamb sopressata ($5 for 2 ounces), fig torta, sheep’s-milk cheese and dill sage sheep’s-milk cheese ($32 per pound; Black Rock Orchard will have apple/grape cider ($2 pint, $4 quart), fruit roll-ups ($3 each, 2 for $5); Wollam Gardens will have holiday wreaths ($50); Lynnvale Studios will have holly centerpieces ($15); Here’s the Catch will have wild-caught oysters.
At Saturday’s FreshFarm Market in Silver Spring, Atwater’s Bakery will have fruitcake; Copper Pot will have sausage and sage ravioli.
At Sunday’s FreshFarm Market in Dupont Circle, Wollam Garden will make its last appearance for the season.
At Sunday’s Takoma Park Farmers Market, Keswick Creamery will feature marinated feta cheese; Clear Spring Creamery will have Camembert and Diva’s Dome; this is the last week that Blue Ridge Botanicals will have evergreen wreaths ($45 to $60) embellished with pearly everlasting, staghorn sumac, guinea feathers, rose hips and more; Twin Springs Fruit Farm will have greenhouse vine-ripened tomatoes ($2.99 per pound) and a 5-or-more tomato sale ($2.49 per pound), plus lettuce, arugula, a limited supply of Middle Eastern cucumbers and green beans, as well as eggplant, “sugar snack” carrots, Brussels sprouts, sweet white and mild red onions, three varieties of winter squash (kabocha “Sunshine,” buttercup “Bon Bon,” acorn), “Vivaldi” yellow potatoes, Japanese and Beauregard sweet potatoes, hardneck garlic and 14 kinds of apples; Glenville Hollow Farms will have potatoes, winter squash, spinach, cabbage, kale, collards, turnips, broccoli, popcorn and Brussels sprouts; Black Rock Orchard will have Bosc pears for two more weeks, plus Asian pears, apple cider and 12 varieties of apples.
SPECIAL EVENTS
On Sunday, Takoma Park Farmers Market will sell its market tokens in $5 increments at the ATM table.
At Sunday’s FreshFarm Market in Dupont Circle, chef Matt Hill from Charlie Palmer Steak will cook a dish from 11 a.m. to noon.
