Shopping: Take the bread and run

Union Station upped its food quotient considerably with the April 1 opening of kiosks in the portico at the far left, where the Metro escalators are. The best development may be Lyon Bakery's modest monument to good breads and rolls. It's the first retail outlet for this commercial bakery, run by Alidad Hakimi and located in Southwest D.C. You've probably had Lyon bread, as it is served at Taberna del Alabardero, Cafe Deluxe, Bazin's on Church, Busboys and Poets, Johnny's Half Shell and Cashion's Eat Place, to name a few.

Now you can walk right up to the very pleasant Ramy Salih, a bakery sales associate, and buy fresh baguettes for $2 (regular, jalapeno and cheese, rustic) and loaves (rustico, pain levain, sourdough, multigrain, braided challah, pumpernickel, walnut raisin, rosemary) for $3 and "sample" size rolls in several varieties such as brioche, cinnamon raisin, multigrain and pumpernickel (four for $1). These are breads with crust that crunches when it's supposed to and chewy, satisfying insides. If there were little tubs of flavored butters, I suspect some boules and baguettes would never make it all the way home on the train. Morning commuters on their way into work have been grabbing the brioche and cinnamon raisin rolls, Salih says.

Call to place an order a day in advance (202-484-2100; ask for kiosk pickup) and it will be waiting for you. The stand is open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Mondays through Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sundays. (Business has been slower on Sundays, so those hours may change.)

Alidad has hopped on the frozen yogurt bandwagon with a Frozen Yogurt Indulgence stand, right next to his bread stand. He uses organic milk and organic yogurt, which makes the frozen product taste a little bit creamier. Two flavors are available each day; over the weekend, plain was paired with a shockingly pink, but all-natural, pomegranate. A plain eight-ounce cup costs $3.50, and two toppings will bring the total to $4.95.
