Who said cupcake?
A soft launch in the restaurant world provides opportunities for feedback and fine-tuning, and the same has been true for the new bakery in Chevy Chase called Frosting, A Cupcakery.
The shop and coffee bar is tucked into the newish band of businesses facing the Metrobus lanes at Friendship Heights. Frosting is a tasteful oasis in pale blue and white. Michelle Snow Bracken and Todd Bracken's wedding story is framed and on the wall. To this War veteran, Frosting's cupcakes may give Georgetown Cupcakes a run for its money: They are beautiful, just the right size and come in several dozen delicious flavors ($2.75 each). Carrot and lemon are currently high on our list. Because the shop's hours start early, morning commuters can pick up doughnuts, individual coffeecakes, poundcake slices, biscotti, brownies and sugar cookies. Gluten-free options are available.
The Brackens and Michelle's mother, Ann, are partners. Recipes are family secrets.
As of a few weeks ago, the cupcake flavors stood at a total of 29. But "I've just added Fluffer Nutter to our baking schedule," Michelle said last week, which she described as vanilla cake with marshmallow filling, a peanut frosting, a dollop of marshmallows and a drizzle of honey on top. "The response has been sweet." New biscotti flavors and a frosted almond sugar cookie are additions as well.
The shop's been selling since April 21, but will celebrate an official grand opening on June 5th.
