The Maryland legislative committee that's investigating Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. for the way his administration handled the termination of dozens of longtime state workers was expecting tomorrow to be a banner day.
They had planned to call Joe Steffen to the witness stand. Steffen, you'll recall, was the Ehrlich political aide who called himself "the prince of darkness," kept a grim reaper figurine on his desk and, according to the testimony thusfar, had compiled lists of people to fire.
After months of staying in touch with Steffen, and a series of interviews, the legislature's chief investigator, Ward Coe, now can't seem to find Steffen. Last week Coe hired a process server to try and track Steffen down and serve him with a subpoena. But as of earlier today, still no luck, Coe said.
Coe said he has only one message for Steffen at this point: "Call me."
