Ehrlich Takes Aim at Franchot

Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. is, of course, running for re-election against Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley (D). But Ehrlich (R) directed his heaviest firepower toward the Democrats' candidate for comptroller, Montgomery Del. Peter Franchot, at a Republican dinner last night in Baltimore.

"Peter lives on an island," Ehrlich said of the Takoma Park resident to the roughly 1,000 attendees. "Chances are, no one in this room will ever visit that island."

Ehrlich said he was concerned that Franchot, who upset imcumbent William Donald Schaefer (D) in the primary, would "stop me" on the Board of Public Works, a three-member panel on which both the governor and comptroller sit. Several Democrats have also expressed concerns to him about Franchot landing on the panel and taking over as the state's chief tax collector, Ehrlich said.

"I am here to assure you that is not going to happen," Ehrlich said. "He doesn't even know what a comptroller does."

The Republican nominee for the position, former University of Baltimore business school dean Anne M. McCarthy, picked up on that theme upon taking stage later.

"Unlike my opponent, I am actually qualified for this job," McCarthy said. She urged the audience to vote for her and bring 10 Democratic friends to the polls with them in November to do the same.

It may take something close to that to derail Franchot in a state where Democrats outnumber Republicans nearly 2-to-1. A Baltimore Sun poll published the morning showed Franchot leading McCarthy 54 percent to 29 percent, with 17 percent undecided.

Last night's dinner was capped off with the unveiling of the newest member of the Maryland GOP, Sen. John Giannetti, who is switching parties to run in November for a seat which he lost in the primary.

I like Franchot. He was very active around the state before the primary and if he continues that high level of visibility he'll keep his lead.

Ehrlich should be going after O'Malley (not Franchot) much harder. O'Malley is nothing but a dumbed down version of Clinton, a mini-Clinton or Clinton-lite, without any real record of accomplishments. Ehrlich should drive that home when Clinton comes to town next month to campaign for O'Malley.

What has Ehrlich done? He campaigned on the single issue of bring slots to Maryland and failed. The Right will undoubtely bring up the fact that the Democrats control the Assembly, but an opposition legislature didn't stop Mark Warner from making Virginia the best-managed state in the nation or Mitt Romney from working with Democrats to pass common-sense health care legislation. The simple truth is that Ehrlich is a partisan hack who would rather disparage those who disagree with his politics than work for a better Maryland.

Divided government can be good for the public so long as the respective branches along their division to reach sensible compromise. Ehrlich isn't sensible, he isn't cooperative and he lacks any accomplishments worthy of reelection.

"Divided government can be good for the public so long as the respective branches along their division to reach sensible compromise."

Should read: Divided government can be good for the public so long as the respective branches work alongside their division to reach sensible compromise.

Giannetti is a dirtbag whose "values" are pretty suspect. I wonder why the Republicans want him so badly.

Franchot's leftism makes him a horrible choice for any government position. Send him packing, fast!

Under Franchot
the dollars will flow
to Casa De Maryland
and others who know
how to wildly spend
taxpayer money
while so many are deceived by
Franchot's milk and honey.

Ehrlich should be going after Leggett the Democratic party's nominee for Montgomery County executive, who was rejected as Kathleen Kennedy's and Mayor O'Malley's running mate, who is now running as an "independent." Three out of three rejections would be a strike out that would make even Peter Angelos happy.

Now Robin Ficker is calling himself "Mocogovote". He's in a bad mood because Ike Leggett bested him in an event before the Wheaton NARFE group yesterday afternoon. For example, Ficker got up and told this long, pointless story about how he was going to challenge Adrian Fenty to a bicycle race to get a chance to meet with Fenty to discuss issues. Leggett just got up, said "All I have to do is pick up the phone; I was Adrian's Torts professor in law school", and sat down. Ficker turned red and looked ready to start to cry

Bob Ehrlich was mouthing off on primary day mocking Franchot and questioning whether he would even reach 15%. Peter will get more votes than Ehrlich in November. Bobby doesn't have to worry. O'Malley will be dealing with Franchot.

I say Amen!

I'm tired of hearing Ehrlich boast about the problems in Baltimore. He's been governor for four years, what has he done? Note to Bob: Baltimore is the biggest city in the state you govern. He doesn't care about solving problems. He just wants to score some political advantage.

He's a great campaigner, and a terrible governor.

He sounds good, but he doesn't delivery.

Of course they'll visit that island. When Peter is Comptroller all the fat cats who forked over big money for last night's Republican fundraiser will go to his office to grovel for some land sale or tax break to line their pockets.

Fortunately, we'll have a Comptroller who is going to be looking out for the interests of the people, and not the insider elite.

I'm looking forward to voting for Peter Franchot for Comptroller.

I can't wait to see Robin Ficker's new ad in the Montgomery Weekly section of the Post tomorrow. He's got the best newspaper ad campaign I've seen and I've been on the Hill fore eleven years.

Robin, I keep telling you that you're not going to fool anyone until you learn how to spell properly. Let me ask you again: what services are you going to cut to make good on your repeated promises to return $150 million to the voters? I dare you!!!

Pepe, your anti-Ficker rants are off topic and the bore the hell out of the rest of us. Quite making yourself look so foolish and bitter.

Franchot will try to turn Maryland into a socialist state with taxes that are burdensome beyond belief. Just look at his home town of Takoma Park, where he has chosen to live. It has the highest property taxes of any municipality in the entire state. Many Takoma Park homeowners pay more in property taxes than residents of Potomac and Bethesda because of the extraordinary Takoma Park city taxes. Also, the city of Takoma Park spends more per-capita on legal costs than any other city in the state. At the same time, it has highest crime rate of any city outside Baltimore.

Rufus, if you don't like what I have to say, don't read it. I plan to continue to exercise my right to state my opinions, just as you do so frequently. That's all.

Little Pepe, I stay on topic at least. Your Ficker hate-fest adds nothing to these discussions.

Posted by: Rufus | September 28, 2006 12:53 PM

Thank you, Robin...oops, I mean Rufus. Wonder why I confuse the two of you...

Erlich needs to remember that he didn't get elected, Steele did! Could someone please tell him that! Everyone voted for Steele during his election, mostly because we wanted a african american as a Lt. Governor.

Posted by: Concerned Voter | September 28, 2006 1:26 PM

Ok Concerned Voter, so why not an African American Senator then as well?

What are Franchot's qualifications to be Comptroller? Should one be more than just a politicial? I would think a background in State finance or accounting would be a pre-requisite.

Posted by: Steven | October 1, 2006 8:22 AM

That's why I voted for Rosapepe! Enjoy loss #2 in November, Giannetti.

Posted by: Shawn Magnuson | October 4, 2006 2:54 PM

MR.Ehrlich, As someone who has always voted for you I am disgusted by what your conduct has become. You certainly take joy in childish behavior and disgusting tactics

Posted by: Eileen | October 6, 2006 11:32 AM

Franchot is arogant and power hungy and has no business in the comptroller's office. McCarthy, fired Dean of UB, is not any better. Why can't a visionary, honest person run for public office.
