A Who's Who for Hughes

A tribute last night to former Gov. Harry R. Hughes drew a who's who of Maryland Democrats, many of them making sure to congratulate the state's next governor, Baltimore Mayor Martin O'Malley.

Hughes was saluted by the Maryland Center for Agro-Ecology, a University of Maryland entity that is renaming itself in his honor. The event, held at the Annapolis Sheraton, doubled as a toast to the former governor's 80th birthday.

Besides O'Malley, soon-to-be statewide officeholders in attendance included Lt. Gov.-elect Anthony G. Brown, Comptroller-elect Peter Franchot and Attorney General-elect Douglas Gansler. Others present included retiring Sen. Paul Sarbanes and former Sen. Joseph Tydings.

Standing in the hall during cocktail hour, O'Malley drew the largest crowd of well-wishers. There was one attendee, though, who seemed to nearly bump into his circle but quickly moved on: Jervis Finney, counsel to outgoing Republican Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr.

That movie about his life, "The Aviator", was fascinating.
