Dimmer Light on Democrats' Firings?
Loyalists to former Republican governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. are accusing Democratic lawmakers of applying a double standard to the firing practices of the past and present governors.
In recent weeks, Republicans have been circulating a list of a couple of dozen state workers, some of them active in GOP politics, who have been fired or demoted since Democratic Gov. Martin O'Malley's arrival in January.
Ehrlich's firings prompted a 14-month investigation by the Democrat-led General Assembly, which culminated in a lengthy report that found that the governor dispatched loyalists into state agencies to identify people to fire.
Anne Sunderland, a former public information officer at the Department of Aging under Ehrlich, said she expected to be shown the door after O'Malley won the governor's race.
"To the winner go the spoils," Sunderland said. "I have no problem with that, but when Governor Ehrlich did the same thing, everyone went ballistic."
Democrats argue that what O'Malley is doing is hardly the same thing. For starters, the scope of Ehrlich's firings was far greater: His aides put the count at 284.
And Ehrlich's methods attracted a lot more attention. During the first two years of his tenure, for example, a longtime aide, Joseph Steffen, worked in three state agencies, fostering a reputation as a hatchet man by placing a figurine of the Grim Reaper on his desk and telling co-workers that he had a "death list" of people marked for dismissal.
O'Malley aides said terminations in the new administration are being handled by Cabinet secretaries with no direct guidance from the governor's office.
"Governor O'Malley is committed to building a professional and competent state government for the people of Maryland and has recruited highly qualified, professional Cabinet secretaries," said O'Malley spokesman Rick Abbruzzese.

No, that's in Rufus words. The truth is O'Malley is not doing the same thing. So where is this list huh? They are people like Tom Marr's daughter, Ron Smith's wife right?

These changes are miniscule compared to what is coming. Do you realize that there is very little institutional memory in Maryland as to the repercussions of raising the state sales tax. The tax increasing crowd is looking at what happened in New Jersey and is saying, "we can get away with it." Not so. Raising that state sales tax will be the biggest mistake they've made. Don't look at New Jersey. Look at Delaware, which has no sales tax.

Hey Robin - maybe you should move to Delaware to defend those people from the possibility of a sales tax.

"...Terminations in the new administration are being handled by Cabinet secretaries with no direct guidance from the governor's office."
O'Malley's administration has started to quack like a Glendening ducky--a bad omen for Maryland.

Murphy shows his total ignorance of the subject. Ehrlich used his appointments office vis-avie Steffen and the gang to circument legal hiring and firing practices. Cabinent Secretaries are supposed to be responsible for personnel decisions. Why do you thing McCabe went whining to Ehrlich about Steffen having more authority than he did?

Murphy another typical ignorant Ehrlich supporter. Cabinent Secretaries are supposed to do the hiring/firing not the Governor's Appointments Office. Your boy Bob had Steffen with more authority than Chris McCabe.

I agree with Sunderland in the story - you expect Governors to be able to pick and choose who works in their administration. It was a rediculious notion that the Democrats went after Ehrlich on it and it's not a big deal now that O'Malley is doing the same thing.
Irionic and amusing turnabout, but still not a big deal.

The entire state government is not anyone's "Administration". Where is this list? There is documented prrof Ehrlich fired people illegally. Not the case here.

HiggsJr, before you go calling someone ignorant perhaps you should learn to spell first.
The real crime committed here is the 14 month witch hunt investigation into Ehrlich's firing practices that are, apparently, perfectly OK. The list of 284 names could be anyone with a Democratic voting card fired for ANY reason. O'Malley's thugs wouldn't exaggerate these numbers would they? After all, O'Malley has never lied ummm except on his Bar application, his promise to reign in fees, to fully fund Thornton, to keep BGE rates down...
Remember this:
When O'Malley lies your BGE bill multiplies.

OK, O'Malley-haters, Bush-apologists, the Erlich governorship was one of MD's most corrupt. The verdict on O'Malley's term is not out. Only time will tell, and he has a lot to prove, but let's not dress up Erlich as anything more than he was. Take O'Malley on his own performance. Just because Erlich stunk, does not mean O'Malley will not also stink, but pitch him the ball and see if he can hit. I hesitate to call him OUT this soon. The truth is that BGE rates are going up 50%, if Erlich was re-elected, it was set to go up 75%. That is fact. It tells me O'Malley CAN be effective, though he cannot work miracles. The ICC will be a crucial test for him. Some are for it, many (like me) are against it. I don't think the state can afford the $3 billion debt. If O'Malley, can make the tough choices, either canning the ICC, or somehow balancing the state budget without canning the ICC (which WOULD BE a miracle), than the guy is the real deal.

Guess what BG from PG -they found witches! a bunch of blather to divert from the subject. Ehrlich was more corrupt than Glendenning which is saying a lot. Save your partisan whining for right-wing talk radio where Ehrlich resides. Independents like me are sick of it. from both parties. O'Malley made an effort agianst BGE. He can't be held responsible fro Ehrlich's rubber stamping. He will be judged on his own record.
And BGE does not even serve much of PG County.

Truth, I like the humor in your oxymoronic pen name.
If you're an independent, I'll eat my shorts. You continue to bash Ehrlich, who, by all accounts, did a fine job of cleaning up Glendenning's mess. My guess is that it makes O'Malley look better when you blame everything on Ehrlich, right down to O'Malley slipping on a banana peel on his treadmill. I bet Ehrlich left it there, didn't he? Name a single "corrupt" act in Ehrlich's four year term. The TRUTH is that you can't, can you? Not one. You want to see the list of 12 Republicans fired by O'Malley? Well, I want to see the 284 person list that O'Malley's henchmen have concocted. I don't see anyone whining about that but it's like the article's title indicates, "Dimmer Light on Democrat's Firings".
By the way, BGE does serve significant portions of PG County. Have you heard of the City of Bowie? BGE also serves Anne Arundel and Calvert Counties. If Ehrlich was re-elected BGE rates were NOT going up 75%. Campaign season is over, you can come back to planet reality now. Since we're telling the TRUTH, let me also remind you that O'Malley said his Public Service Commission would take BGE to task, unlike Ehrlich. I ask you and Donny, what have they done? Rolled over a played dead, that's what. It's obvious now that there never was an O'Malley plan to fix this mess. LARGE portions of the state will have jaw droppings energy bill increases at the end of this month, and, thanks to O'Malley's lame 11th hour idea to temporarily cap increases at 15% with no possibility to opt out, EVERYONE will be paying interest on his election ploy on top of the sky rocketing increase.

The bottom line with this article, I think , is that in the final analysis, most Marylanders were not satisfied with the Erlich adminstration - so they elected O'Malley. O'Malley may be meet Erlich's fate in the next election. It will be based on performance. I think Marylanders are tired of the political spin machines and want the state to prosper regardless of who is governor. Some may actually blame O'Malley for our "deregulated" power crisis, but he fact is that this mistake swept the country during Bush Sr. administration and was carried out corruptly during the nineties. The results are situations like Enron and our current rate hikes. BG.PG - I feel your pain and frustration...Pepco is raising my rates too. I can't really pin this rate hike on O'Malley...it would be like pinning the death of ABC Monday Night Football on Bush Jr. Now THAT is a crime. I would gladly pay twice as much for cable AND electricity to get Monday Night Football back...instead - we have "reality shows"...what a bunch of CRAP! O'Malley inherited a mess...however, if he cannot handle the situation - he'll be replaced. No intelligent person really expects these long-term problems to be solved over night, though. We'll see how he handles one full budget cycle and the ICC fiasco. We all may soon be in more debt than BGE and Pepco could ever foist upon us. Good luck.

No surprise really, O'Malley has always been everywhere on everything. It is wrong if you do it, but no problem if he does. He will tell you one thing and deliver you another.
To the person who put Ehrlich and Bush supporters together, aren't you done with that now that the election is over. You know it is not true, but hey it was O'Malley's only campaign point

Where is your story today? The Washington Post dropped the ball! A judge agreed saying O'Malley had fired someone politically...ALREADY...and we are not even past the halfway point of his first year! How dare the Washington Post take O'Malley's side on here and ignore a pressing story that made the front page of the Washington Times, Baltimore Examiner, AP ran a story on, etc.

From a news source unafraid to print the truth about the O'Malley administration:
"Judge Susan A. Sinrod ruled that Greg Maddalone was fired illegally by the O'Malley administration because of his political ties to former Gov. Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., a Republican."
"Democratic lawmakers in 2005 accused the Ehrlich administration of illegally firing thousands of state workers because of their ties to previous Democratic governors."
"After the Democrat-controlled General Assembly spent 13 months and $1.1 million of public funds to investigate the charges, Mr. Ehrlich was found to not have fired anyone illegally."
Whenever the truth comes out, it does not bode well for the Leftists.

The Post ran many stories last year about the witch hunt on the Ehrlich Administration. Then, apparently taking orders from O'Malley, Busch and Miller, the Post sees fit to ignore this latest development. The Post is losing its credibility and, if this continues, will be just like the Baltimore Sun in the region that isn't even good enough to wrap crabs. Come on, Wagner! Write the story as it happens, not as you would like it to be.
Posted by: Bootlickers | June 14, 2007 12:10 PM
Rufus, here's my favorite part of the article:
"House Speaker Michael E. Busch, Anne Arundel County Democrat, and Senate President Thomas V. Mike Miller Jr., Prince George's County Democrat, were unavailable for comment about the Maddalone ruling yesterday.
Mr. Busch and Mr. Miller, who spearheaded the investigation of the Ehrlich administration's firings, have not said whether they will consider a similar probe of the O'Malley administration."
I'd really like to comment on that but I think those two paragraphs speak for themselves.

I agree the Post is ignoring this scandal with O'Malley written all over it. Incredibly, they also refuse to report the story that the Vice President was abducted by aliens and a look-a-like Dick Cheney is actually instructing the president. GIMME A BREAK! Erlich was NOT re-elected for many reasons. O'Malley won...deal with it...digest the sour grapes already! If O'Malley fails as badly during his term...he will join Erlich in the "one-termer" club. Let's see how he does.

We're not ignoring the story...it's called getting scooped. We're following the Examiner story in tomorrow's paper and will post on the blog when it's ready.

People voted for O'Malley because they couldn't vote against Bush.

In other words, the Left-wing press will close ranks to defend actions taken by O'Malley while they used to condemn the same actions when taken by Ehrlich.
Imagine our surprise.
