From the Floor: Picking Biden

The Denver Pre Plan
I have just learned some very exciting news. My delegation's co-chair Congressman Elijah Cummings will be addressing the Convention on Wednesday night at 8 p.m. Exciting and well deserved.
My Joe Biden connection
I am a proud graduate of the National Urban /Rural Fellows program, M.P.A., class on 1997. Dr. Tony Allen was a classmate. At the time, I found him to be friendly, charismatic and academically brilliant. He was a proud Delaware native who would assert, "I'm from the first, great, tax-free state." I would frown and think to myself, "Come on Delaware, give me Philly, Boston, Cali or D.C., you've got to be kidding?" Tony would often share his desire to be governor of Delaware one day.
Saturday, we learned that Senator Joe Biden is Obama's V.P. pick. I decided to look up my friend Tony since the state of Delaware was all over the news. I was not surprised when a basic Google search yielded the following: "Tony served as Special Assistant to United States Senator Joseph R. Biden, Jr., where he wrote the Senator's speeches on equality and social justice and coordinated statewide efforts in housing and nonprofit organizational development."
I also discovered that Tony has served on numerous boards, including the Institute for Opportunity and Equality in Washington, D.C., the Delaware Community Foundation, the State of Delaware's Judicial Nominating Commission and most recently The Wilmington Hope Commission, just to name a few.
Tony and I never kept in touch but hopefully that will change now that we have a mutual friend in common. Thanks, Joe.
