At College Park: Fingers Crossed

Scores of students packed the Grand Ballroom at the student union of the University of Maryland at College Park to watch the results from today's historic presidential election. CNN played on one screen, while Comedy Central aired on another. Raucous cheers broke out as CNN called a set of states for Sen. Barack Obama, while another student cursed loudly as a state was called for Sen. John McCain.

Laura Barrantes, 33, an Obama campaign worker, said she was brimming with anticipation. She had taken a picture of her ballot, the Obama-Biden ticket checked, and posted it to her Facebook account.

She said she had been waiting for this moment since Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention in 2004. "I have that speech on my iPod," she said.

"It's going to be a close, close call," added David Olson, 20, a sophomore majoring in theater and government who had gone to Richmond to help the Obama campaign. "I'm crossing my fingers."
