Navarro Lines Up Council Support in MoCo's District 4

Montgomery County Board of Education member Nancy Navarro picked up endorsements from four of eight council members this afternoon in her bid to fill the vacancy left by the death of council member Don Praisner in January.

Valerie Ervin (D-Silver Spring), Nancy Floreen (D-At Large), Michael Knapp (D-Upcounty) and George Leventhal (D-At Large) were joined by a diverse crowd of community leaders as they formally announced their support for Navarro in a courtyard outside the council building in Rockville.

The council members praised Navarro's experience grappling with tough budget issues on the school board and said she reflects the diversity of the eastern county district she seeks to represent.

Navarro is one of six Democrats and three Republicans competing in special election primary contests set for April 21.

Still unknown is whether the other four council members will line up behind one of her rivals. County Executive Isiah Leggett (D) is a close ally of the family of Del. Benjamin Kramer (D), but he has not publicly stated his preference in the contest.

We need somebody who is homeowner-friendly on the council. Nancy and her supporters on the council all supported a 13.5% increase in the property tax this past year in a recession, the largest increase in 20 years. And Nancy and her supporters on the council all opposed the passage of my Ficker Amendment which increased the number of council votes necessary to exceed the charter property tax limit from 7 to 9. This Ficker Amendment passed in District 4 by 2,000 votes despite the opposition of Nancy and her council supporters. Now one vote can make a difference on the council.

We need to stop using homeowners as an ATM in Montgomery County. We need someone to champion homeowners and that is my goal.

We do not need another panderer for illegal aliens on the MoCo council.
