McDonough Expects Ehrlich's Decision in January
Beside talking about his own intentions regarding a gubernatorial run, Del. Patrick L. McDonough (R-Baltimore County) was quite chatty last night regarding those of former Maryland governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R).
McDonough said his understanding is that Ehrlich will make an announcement in January about whether he is seeking a rematch with Gov. Martin O'Malley (D). Among other things, that will allow Ehrlich to see the fate of Republican gubernatorial candidates on the ballot in Virginia and New Jersey, both of whom are in competitive races being closely watched nationally.
"I think he wants to see how those races turn out," McDonough said, noting that Ehrlich has traditionally been a "late starter" in his campaigns.
Henry Fawell, a former Ehrlich spokesman now working in his law firm, declined to comment directly on the timetable provided by McDonough.
"I'll just reiterate what Governor Ehrlich has said repeatedly," Fawell said this morning. "He's going to make a decision at the time he believes is best for him and his family."
McDonough said yesterday that he would not move forward with a bid if Ehrlich gets in the race.
