List of Potential Pelura Successors Grows

The list of names circulating as potential successors to James Pelura as chairman of the Maryland Republican Party continued to grow Tuesday. For those keeping score...

The most intriguing: Mary Kane, the former secretary of state under former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) -- and wife of John Kane, Pelura's predecessor as GOP chairman.

The most unlikely: Daniel "The Whig Man" Vovak, a political eccentric who often wears a white powdered wig when he speaks at events. Vovak announced his candidacy in a press release Tuesday, saying: "Maryland is currently a haven for Democrats, but it wants to be Republican."

Other names, including some previously mentioned in this space, being floated by GOP insiders include:

* John White, an Annapolis marketing executive who was the runner-up in 2006 to Pelura for party chairman;

* Chris Cavey, the current first vice chairman of the party;

* Ellen Sauerbrey, the GOP nominee for governor in Maryland in 1994 and 1998; and

* Al Redmer, a former minority leader in the House of Delegates and state insurance commissioner under Ehrlich. Redmer said in an interview that he would "never say never" to the job but is more interested in running for Congress or state Senate in 2010.
