Perez Confirmed by U.S. Senate
The U.S. Senate has approved the nomination of Thomas E. Perez to head the civil rights division of the Department of Justice, ending a long wait for the Montgomery County resident and O'Malley administration Cabinet member.
The vote this afternoon was 72 to 22.
Perez is a former Montgomery County Council member and has been serving as secretary of the Department of Labor, Licensing and Regulation for Gov. Martin O'Malley (D).
Republicans had delayed Perez's confirmation over concerns about his stands related to immigration. Perez's replacement, Alexander M. Sanchez, has already started work.
