Mikulski 'not retiring,' announces campaign team

Mikulski.jpgPerhaps this will help quell the recent retirement rumors: Sen. Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) announced senior members of her re-election team Monday morning, saying in a news release that she is "looking forward to a vigorous campaign."

Mikulski announced that Simone Ward would serve as manager of a campaign that also includes media strategist Mandy Grunwald and pollster Fred Yang.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going," Mikulski said. "I am not shy, and I am not retiring. And neither is my top-notch team."

With an approval rating that has remained in the 60s in recent polls, Mikulski would appear to be one of the most difficult Democrats to knock off in an election year in which many other members of her party are either in trouble or retiring.

Among the Republicans angling to challenge her are Carmen Amedori, a former state delegate, and Eric Wargotz, a Queen Anne's County commissioner and pathologist.

The complete text of Mikulski's news release is below.

(Baltimore, Md.) -- U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-Md.) announced today she has assembled a team of seasoned senior advisors with extensive experience in both Maryland and national politics for her upcoming re-election campaign.

"When the going gets tough, the tough get going," Senator Mikulski said. "I am not shy, and I am not retiring. And neither is my top-notch team. I'm looking forward to a vigorous campaign."

Democratic campaign veteran Simone Ward is leading the high-powered Mikulski for Senate team that includes well-known media strategist Mandy Grunwald and top pollster Fred Yang.

Campaign Manager Simone L. Ward has a long history of working with women who have successfully run for national office. Most recently, Ward served in the political department at EMILY's List, advising winning candidates like Congresswoman Donna Edwards (MD-4) and U.S. Senators Kay Hagan (D-N.C.) and Mary Jo Kilroy (D-Ohio). Ward knows Maryland. She has advised statewide races in Maryland for the Democratic Coordinated Campaign through the Democratic National Committee. Ward is also the former Executive Director of the political association Democratic GAIN where she helped develop strategy and staffing for coordinated and candidate campaigns for more than 10 years.

Joining Ward on Mikulski for Senate is Mandy Grunwald, who serves as the campaign's chief communications strategist. She is founder and principal of Grunwald Communications, which has tallied a win in each and every one of its U.S. Senate races for the last three election cycles, including the campagins of Senators Al Franken, Jeanne Shaheen, Amy Klobuchar, Hillary Clinton, Ken Salazar and Sherrod Brown. Grunwald is also recognized for her work as media consultant for Hlllary Clinton's historic 2008 presidential bid and for Bill Clinton's 1992 presidential campaign.

Rounding out the team is pollster and Maryland resident Fred S. Yang, a partner in the political division of Garin, Hart, Yang of Hart Research. The political division represents 12 U.S. Senators, including Mark Warner (D-Va.) and Bob Casey, Jr. (D-Pa.). Yang's knowledge of Maryland's political landscape comes from his work for Governor Martin
O'Malley, Congressman Frank Kratovil, and Baltimore Mayor Stephanie Rawlings Blake, among others.

Please!! Let there be a viable challanger to this uber-liberal troll of a woman. Either stop electing these liberal fools or stop wondering why MD has so many pedophiles roaming the streets instead of in jail where they belong and why we give $1.2 billion dollars a year to illegal aliens!!

If you don't like the State of Maryland, leave the State of Maryland! Perhaps you would find people to your liking and ilk in Virginia, or Russia for that matter.

Hit the bricks, and good riddance!

I support Senator Mikulski and continue to donate to her re-election. She is great!

Probably the same thing people like you said in Massachusetts, we all know how that turned out, LOL! Virginia is a fine state, we would do well by adopting some of their policies here in MD, especially the ones that are clearing out the illegal alien parasites. Mikulski is a liberal troll, I'm sure you're cut from the same fabric no doubt.

Darn; I was going to recommend her for a medal of freedom for retiring and saving the union from her mindless crap.

That's why you should move your sorry butt to Virginia where the like minded right wing nut jobs have a firm hold of government.

We dont want, or need, the backwoods bigots and segregatonist in Maryland. Good riddance D-bag!

Good luck getting the Senator out of office. Im all for getting her out but Maryland is a cold blooded liberal state, none of the wack jobs in the race now can even make a dent at her. Amedori is a virtual no name no a days and Wargotz is just crazy. I'll bet he was the one that started the rumors in the blogs. I mean he even starts a website try to steal the "money bomb" technique as well. As much as the Tea Bag party of Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Beck would cringe, MD needs a MODERATE to run against any D's in MD unless you live in the Eastern Shore. I may not like Babs but compared to the two that are in the race now, Id vote for Babs.

Glad you recognize Dr. Wargotz as a front-runner. The other R candidates simply don't matter. They are goofy. It will be Wargotz vs Mikulski and that will prove VERY interesting!

Eric Wargezt is a birther. See the Youtube Video. It's embarrassing for him, its certainly embarrassing for the Republican Party in Maryland.

I'm scared for the Republican ticket for senate if all we can put up to face an entrenched and well-liked Senator is a queen anne county comissioner who if you watch this video is NOT representative of Marylanders.

Only thing interesting will be how bad he gets trounced by Senator Barb.
