Unspun: Maryland House Speaker Mike Busch
"I love to teach. I love to coach."
An offbeat interview with a Maryland politician
Interview by John Wagner
Name Michael E. Busch
Position Speaker of the House of Delegates
Growing up, was there a TV show you would never miss?
I used to watch "Spin and Marty" all the time when I came home from school. ... They were two young kids that had gone out to live on a ranch. It had all the wholesomeness of Walt Disney, and I watched it all the time.
What do you do to relax?
I work out and golf and exercise, and I coach my two daughters (ages 11 and 14) in basketball and lacrosse.
What is the most recent song you've downloaded to your ipod?
I don't have an ipod, and I have not downloaded to an ipod. I'm an individual who still loves Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Doobie Brothers and the Eagles. I'm not much in tune with modern-day music, to the chagrin of my daughters.
What's your favorite possession?
I don't really have a favorite possession. I love my daughters and my wife, but I don't consider them possessions. Besides that, I guess my golf clubs.
BlackBerry or iphone?
BlackBerry. We still have numerous worlds to conquer with the BlackBerry, but we're good with the phone and messaging portions.
What's your favorite sports team?
What movie have you most recently watched twice?
"Sherlock Holmes." I took each daughter one time.
What's your biggest goof?
There's a long list. I'd imagine not putting more effort into high school studies.
What surprises you most about being a politician?
The extraordinary effort that people put in to make their communities a better place to live in, despite the distractions and criticism.
If you weren't involved in politics, what would you do with that time?
I'd either be teaching or coaching or a combination. I was a teacher before I got here. I love to teach. I love to coach.
