Michael Rund, president of the Professional Fire Fighters of Maryland, said he saw no need to wait until former governor Robert L. Ehrlich Jr. (R) enters the race, a development expected later this month.

"We know what we have with this governor, and we know what we had with the former governor," Rund said after an afternoon event with O'Malley in a Baltimore union hall. "(Ehrlich) wasn't very labor-friendly."

The firefighters offered praise for O'Malley's efforts to upgrade statewide communication systems for emergency responders, among other initiatives.

"You guys risk your lives for fellow citizens, fellow citizens you've never met," O'Malley told leaders of the group. "It's been a privilege to stand with you."
