Obama, the 'Superman' movie flack?

By Valerie Strauss

President Obama is welcoming to the White House the five charming students who starred in the education film “Waiting for Superman.”

Thank you, Mr. President, for helping Davis Guggenheim promote “Superman,” which presents an often misleading and sometimes dishonest look at the public education system. The $2 million grant that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation gave to market the movie worldwide apparently wasn’t enough to whip up publicity.

The five students in the film are shown trying to escape their troubled traditional public schools by participating in lotteries for admittance to public charter schools. It is, for sure, emotional.

Through no fault of the kids, Guggenheim edited the film to make it seem as if charter schools are a systemic answer to the ills afflicting many traditional public schools, even though they can’t be, by their very design. (The film also fails to mention that the biggest research study on charter schools shows that test scores in only 17 percent of them are better than their local traditional schools.)

The film also unfairly demonizes Randi Weingarten, president of the American Federation of Teachers, and promotes reforms that are driven by business practices not really suited for a civic institution.

Obama saw Superman and said in an interview last month with NBC’s Matt Lauer that it was "heartbreaking" and "powerful."

That was the same interview in which he said that schools in the D.C. public system were making progress but were not as good as the private Sidwell Friends School where his two daughters attend. He didn’t, of course, mention that Sidwell would never adopt the standardized test-centric practices that his own policies are forcing on public schools.

But I digress.

Obama has long expressed support for charter schools, and his main education initiative to date, Race to the Top, encourages states to allow more charters to open. And, of course, it is always delightful when the president shows the White House off to young people. What a great educational experience.

Still, Obama’s embrace of the “Superman” stars seems like an extension of the film's marketing campaign, which is doing just fine already, thank you.

The $2 million Gates grant, details of which you can see here, was issued last August to Participant Media, LLC, with this purpose: “to execute a social action campaign that will complement Paramount’s marketing campaign of Waiting for Superman.”

If Obama really wants to help promote education films, he could take a look at “Race to Nowhere,” a documentary that isn’t backed by a Gates grant but, as my colleague Donna St. George wrote, explores “the strains of competing in a pressure-packed academic culture that is highly test-driven and pushes some students to the edge.”

His time would better be spent by talking to education experts who aren’t enamored with his policies and using his extraordinary intellect to come to understand how he is getting education so wrong.

COMPARISON: a highly effective instructional technique
DIRECTIONS: Compare these two statements:
“Waiting for Superman"
"The film also fails to mention that the biggest research study on charter schools shows that test scores in only 17 percent of them are better than their local traditional schools."
“Race to Nowhere”
“...the strains of competing in a pressure-packed academic culture that is highly test-driven and pushes some students to the edge.”
REFLECTIVE QUESTION: STUDENT, PARENT, TEACHER, TAXPAYER. Using one of these perspectives, which movie speaks truth to power?

Ms. Strauss,

What part of the film is misleading? I'm a teacher- I saw it. I work in DCPS. Have you ever seen how parents in DCPS fight and claw to get their kids in any school other than a DCPS school? Guggenheim never once in the movie suggests or states that Charter schools are the answer. His point--only point in fact--is that no child in this country should be reduced to a lottery to get into a school...no student should be reduced to a ticket...How does he unfairly characterize Weingarten? Does she not lead the union? Did she not engage in lawsuits to keep teachers in the "rubber room" in New York? How do you refute that less than 1% of unionized teachers are fired for poor performance each year compared to a significantly higher margin in law and medicine....

You keep citing generalizations in every editorial you write without any facts, research or supporting evidence. How can you be a journalist in a paper of the stature of the Post? Very concerning...

How Rhee's antics undermined my child's school

from a concerned
DCPS parent:

re: Michelle Rhee’s “mom friendly” comment,
prepared specifically for the Oprah show, about
moms not tolerating mediocre teachers being given time to grow and develop professionally. “Well ---
The unqualified, needing-to-grow-professionally,
TFA principal that Rhee PUSHED on our school, despite protests from a panel of engaged, informed, truly progressive, professional educators and parents with advanced degrees in education . . . . . (this TFA principal) hired and protected even more inexperienced, unqualified teachers who will take YEARS to develop into true professionals. But the principal and those teachers all know how to say “yes” to their boss. Too bad they don’t know the basics of how children learn, or the nuances of curriculum and instruction. It is hard, hard work indeed to have to reprogram my kids every day after school, to get them to embrace and understand learning again. Rhee’s influential, BAD decisions and practices, more than ANY OTHER failure of the DC Public School system, has me on the verge of pulling my kids out of school. Rhee embarrassed herself mightily at the DC screening of this film (”Waiting for Wall Street Super-scammers”) with her comment insulting DC voters. My kids, and the
350 others in their school, will not be devastated at all when she leaves. We assume she will head
to the business world for which she may have
more appropriate skills.”

The DCPS decline in test scores
in elementary schools
(Reading and Math) now reflect 2007 levels.
In actuality the drop was 4 points of proficiency.
These drops in elementary reading and math represent
an overall drop of 9-10% fewer elementary children
scoring proficient compared to last year.

One of the realities of Rhee’s brand of reform leadership is that our youngest children
are not being taught well.
See here= />
http://gfbrandenburg.wordpress.com/2010/08/20/detailed-results-on-the-dc...

If the reforms were having an impact one would expect
that the third graders who entered the school system
when Rhee did 3 years ago, and are taking the DC CAS
tests for the first time, would have shown great promise now. Unfortunately the opposite is true;
the test scores show declining proficiency rates.

The most difficult thing about being a parent of a child in DCPS is the huge lack of analysis in the mainstream media and the general spread of misinformation about the nature of educational gains (or lack there of).
We have a lot to learn from our third graders and owe them a qualified educational leader who can truly enable them to have high-quality learning experiences.

Unfortunately for DC teachers, the greatest beneficiaries of Rhee’s lack of real educational leadership have been the charters — because people have flocked to them for cover as Rhee closed 20 some schools. But perhaps as a teacher you and your colleagues at the charter should ask yourself why isn’t the quality of the schools good enough. Why aren’t all children everywhere being provided with the curriculum rich learning experiences you benefited from at the private school?
What needs to happen next to ensure that goal?

I assure you it is not it has nothing to do with the desperation and other articulate passions expressed by people like Rhee.
It has to do with getting to the hard work of providing children with significantly enhanced academically rigorous curriculum and learning experiences —
including their families in the process.
Passion (and broom-mongering) aside, Rhee
really didn’t bring it ---
nor was she headed in that general direction in my view.

I have heard Gray speak on the educational issue and he has stated that he will move forward with reforms just not with the expansion of testing as Rhee planned. Hopefully that will mean that our children are getting higher quality instruction here in
DC, rather than Rhee’s’ ‘teaching to the test’ approach which has
hijacked meaningful, viable real education.

We can only be glad the teacher 6402 is not a journalist - talk about "generalizations" and writing without regard to "facts, research or supporting evidence."

Hmmm - that sounds like the WaPo editorial board.

By the way - parents also fight and claw to get INTO some DCPS schools -it's called the lottery system, just like in "Superman."

Did anyone else read the article in September's Ebony where Michelle Rhee proudly touts the fact that programs like TFA and her 'New Teacher Project'
are bringing in teachers from the 'elite' schools?
She had to backtrack when
Dr. Julianne Malveaux, president of Bennett College, challenged her.
And, Rhee didn't mention that these programs bring in teachers with no disciplinary skills (such as herself -- remember her fond anecdote about
"taping shut 2nd grade students' mouths
in Baltimore")
and these unqualified, untrained or minimally trained recruits are basically temp. workers not committed to the profession of teaching.

These programs are NOT designed to develop
a professional corps of teachers. No one becomes an expert in only 2 or 3 years. I don't understand why Rhee (or anyone else) spends their energy trying to build and repair schools with these types of temporary teachers. They are a band aid -- nothting more (band-aids are easily peeled off, fall off) --
a pseudo-reform sham providing cover
for a Wall Street-funded
edu-profiteering scam
that doesn't heal anything
and doesn't construct anything
worthwhile for the children.

Valerie -- Randi W. was indeed the impetus for and champion of the infamous "rubber rooms" in NYC because she truly believes no teacher should ever be fired or deprived of pay or pension. No matter what. Leave No Teacher Behind.

It took years and tens if not hundreds of millions of dollars to reduce this theft from NYC taxpayers. You should know better. You should go back to the New Yorker expose on it two years ago, if not to the court documents.

Anything, I repeat, anything that blunts organized teacher unions and their unambiguous focus upon constituency devoid of student progress should be entertained. Education is moving to the internet. The education priesthood is resisting with every trick at their disposal.

Bill Gates has announced prize money for implementations.

Business is disgusted with graduates from the education cartel.

When I was working at a very large computer company, we had to put the "top 10 percent" college graduates that we hired through "boot camp" training school to weed out the "inflated grade" graduates.

Typical tripe from the blogger.
Face it:
As long as the some of the poorest students who go to the worst colleges to study the most puerile subjects become school teachers, then the US public school system will suck. (Would anybody with more than an IQ of 75 be able to bear the typical curricula of any school of education?)
As long as the public school unions make it next to impossible to fire the most incompetent teachers and insist on artificial entry standards, the US school system will suck. (How many teachers were fired in DC before Rhee took over? Is such a low rate realistic in ANY profession?)
As long as a**clowns like this columnist and ignorant parents and taxpayers excuse such incompetence, the US school system will suck. (Why is the blogger so defensive? Is she simply another incompetent affiliated with the school system?)

Just the facts:
Shaw Middle School's scores did not even stay about the same. They went down -- reading scores declined from 38.52% in ’08 to 29.20% in ’09 and it’s math scores went from 33.33% to 29.02%. This can easily be verified at the official website http://nclb.osse.dc.gov. Did you not check? Did you just take Chancellor Rhee’s or Principal Betts’ word on it? The fact that Shaw’s scores didn’t go up is a major embarrassment for Rhee. She installed a new principal, who hired a new staff, selected for being young and “unjaded” and he paid the kids for good behavior and attendance. It seems imperative that Rhee is asked to re-examine her determination to pursue this method and not gloss over an obvious failure with her ongoing pathological prevarication & misrepresentation of the facts.
(as per writer

--------------------------------

Michelle is full of herself..... and facts show... Her scores went down ! The ironic part is watching Rhee loyalists twisting themselves into pretzels to rationalize a 4% drop in D.C. elementary school test scores. Suddenly, the entire test-and-punish crowd is explaining to us how test scores don't mean anything and how test scores are tied much more to out-of-school conditions. The problem is that she has made rising standardized test scores a central measure for achievement -- hers, students and teachers, writes Washington Post columnist Valerie Strauss. So, feel free to judge Rhee on her insistence on placing so much importance on test scores (as have today’s other titans of education reform, such as Joel Klein in New York City). She believes they are so important, in fact, that she recently announced that she wants to expand their use in city schools, so that, in time, every D.C. student from kindergarten through high school is regularly assessed to measure academic progress and teacher effectiveness. But judging her reforms on the actual test scores, well, as my kids say, “Not so much.” -- Posted by Mike Klonsky

Imagine thinking tenure, guaranteed pay raises and insisting on degrees in education will result in mediocrity at best.
After all, no teachers should ever be fired short of premeditated murder.
And the idea of actually testing for results? God forbid.

Only in the never-never land of public education.

test scores for the school as a whole had been disappointing. This suggested that Rhee's students and done inordinately well. Today, Gary Emerling in The Washington Times, reports that the test score improvements cannot be substantiated and he casts doubt on whether such gains were possible.

Rhee's resume says the following:
Taught in Harlem Park Community School, one of the lowest-performing elementary schools in Baltimore City, effecting significant measurable gains in student achievement. Over a two-year period, moved students scoring on average at the 13th percentile on national standardized tests to 90% of students scoring at the 90th percentile or higher.

According to Emerling, Rhee said the test in question was the Comprehensive Test of Basic Skills (CTBS). While it appears impossible to recover test scores from that period, quite a bit of data is contained in a 1995 report compiled by the University of Maryland, Baltimore City. The report includes CTBS scores of Harlem Park 2nd and 3rd graders for the years Rhee was a teacher. That data suggests that Rhee could not have made the gains her resume claims........"

CHEATING ON THE TESTS,
under (unaccountable) Michelle Rhee's watch.....

"Forty-five of Washington's 150 public schools had at least one classroom with an elevated erasure level in 2008, according to the analysis, disclosed by District officials this month. A closer examination of the data shows that suspicious erasures were most heavily concentrated in third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-grade classrooms at a half-dozen schools: Aiton Elementary (seven classrooms); Marie Reed Elementary (six); Takoma Education Campus (five); Langdon Education Campus (four); J.O. Wilson Elementary (four); and Bowen. Five of the schools made gains that exceeded citywide averages. Langdon's scores held relatively steady.

In some cases, the "flagged" classrooms represent the vast majority of students who took the exams in April 2008 in those schools. At Aiton, where reading proficiency doubled to 60 percent and math proficiency more than tripled, the seven classrooms included 136 of the 154 students who took the DC-CAS. At Marie Reed, 121 of the 158 test-taking students were in high-erasure classrooms. At Takoma, it was 92 of 168.

In all, elevated numbers of erasures at the six schools involved classrooms with 573 students. More than 44,300 students attend District public schools, but only students in grades three through eight and 10 take the test.

CTB McGraw-Hill declared the data "inconclusive," and no teachers or administrators have been accused of wrongdoing.

Former D.C. state superintendent of education Deborah A. Gist, who ordered the analysis last year after seeing huge jumps in proficiency rates at some schools, asked Chancellor Michelle A. Rhee to investigate further. Citing the CTB McGraw-Hill's characterization of the findings, Rhee decided against a closer look."

Let's say she fired 300 out of 4000 teachers. Considering that virtually none have ever been subjected to any real evaluation and many are products of US schools of education, less than 10% seems to be a pretty low firing rate. My only question would be, "Why so few?"

Rhee embarrassed herself mightily at the
DC screening of this film
(”Waiting for Wall Street Super-scammers”) with her comment insulting DC voters.
My kids, and the 350 others in their
school, will not be devastated at all
when she leaves.

According to the IG interview with former St. Hope employee Jacqueline Wong-Hernandez, the same time Rhee was listed as a St. Hope board member, she was identified as the consultant for the New Teacher Project (which recruited teachers for St. Hope schools), the consultant for the reconstruction bridge span and the consultant for the reconstruction of the HR department. On a memo she was listed she as the Chief Operating Officer for St. Hope Academy. On an organization chart she was identified as president. As lodesterre writes:
…Ms. Rhee's titles at the St. Hope Charter Academy boggle the mind. Were all the positions paid positions? How did she perform the duties of board member and Chief Operating Officer at the same time? As president, Chief Operating Officer and Board Member at the same time? as President, COO, board member and a consultant for St. Hope on three projects, at the same time? How did she act as a consultant for St. Hope on the New Teacher Project, an organization that supplies teachers to schools, and as a consultant for St. Hope's Human Resource Department's reconstruction? Obama has been an on-going teacher basher. Let's hope he understands the repercussions of his actions. See ya in 2012, Mr. President.

"Now let's have a "manifesto" by the Upper Big Branch mine executives and the BP executives on how to fix the fossil fuel industries... One of the underlying issues here is that the government wants us to educate children to serve as vassals in the corporate system. This is a deadly, mind-numbing business which can easily be measured by standardized tests. Some of us subvert the system and continue to educate children to think for themselves and exercise the freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution. The irony here is that recycling the godawful materials given to teachers as "curriculum," and creating materials based on critical thinking and critical reading improves test scores anyway--it's a side-effect. (There are a few problematic issues--the way the ACT tests "reading" is actually a test of "skimming for answers," not "reading for comprehension." And the math tests are only for speed.) We can distinguish between skills and help students recognize what's important for a meaningful life, even if the administration doesn't see it. The key for teachers is throwing away the pre-fab curricula generated by the big-ed business, and producing lessons that teach critical thinking and social awareness. Yeah, the teachers who take on the challenge may get fired, but they may not. And at least they'll have their integrity."

please read deeply.....

Where is the "accountability" for...
> the CIA and other corrupt
govt. & Wall Street-affiliated players
involved with international drug smuggling
for decades (!)
-- deliberately inundating
communities & specific neighborhoods with heroin,
cocaine, meth, pills (MDMA/ecstacy), etc.
It is a documented fact that the CIA
& corrupt elements of the U.S. govt.
& freemasons have been involved in large-scale
heroin distribution operations and also
involved in the deliberately induced
crack cocaine epidemic targeting black neighborhoods (for the purposes of social undermining & political-economic control).

Where is the "accountability" for...
> The 'entertainment' industry
flooding our youth with heinously toxic,
cognitively poisonous VIOLENT VIDEO GAMES
and GANGSTER-THUG GLORIFYING music/videos
that promote
crime, substance abuse, disgusting conduct,
mistreatment & violence against women,
anti-educational achievement,
anti-positive values, anti-professional careers,
anti-healthy, responsible behaviors !

Where is the "accountability" for
self-proclaimed edu-profiteer BILL GATES & MICROSOFT in producing & promoting VIOLENT, PATHOLOGICAL
VIDEO GAMES, including first-person shooter games,
such as HALO !!!??? --
which, unfortunately, too many of our country's
children, our country's students heinously waste
too much time messing around with,
messing themselves up with --
instead of healthfully, smartly & beneficially using that time for... productive experiences, studying, exploring/learning, participating in sports, teamwork, creative arts music, outdoor activities & nature, significant time with friends & family, engaging in community service !!

Where is the accountability for VIACOM
& other media corporations
(eg. instead of the "BET" channel being utilized
for positive, inspirational, educational
or meaningful programming --
it has mostly
broadcast the worst sociopathic, demeaning,
undermining junk -- promoting
gangsterism & exploiting our vulnerable youth
with pernicious mind-killing crap.

FACT! --
Where is the "accountability" for Wall Street
& elite financiers,
such as MERRILL LYNCH and OPPENHEIMER,
previously the MAIN INVESTORS & SHAREHOLDERS
owning majority stock in the company
that produced the 'GRAND THEFT AUTO' video game
as its main product !!!

Also, what about the corporate soda-pop
& junk food pushers targeting children ?!

The reality is that ethical, caring, dedicated
public school teachers have been the
'good samaritans' courageously
teaching with tremendous effort daily
to educate & constructively help chidren --
to transcend, overcome hardship,
to cultivate wellbeing & achievement --
despite the grotesque obstacles
& destruction foisted on us by
irresponsible, unscrupulous, rapacious and
duplicitous corporate execs. & financial elites,(societally-sabotaging/damaging,
corrupt oligarchs, such as Goldman Sachs,
J.P.Morgan/Rothschild scamsters et. al.
who've caused millions of chidren & families to be homeless.

Valerie, your kids go to Georgetown Day School. Please tell me how President Obama is any more of a hypocrite than you are.

Obama, with his hire of Arne Duncan, is no education expert and we should not spend time heeding his opinion on educ matters.

Valerie's last paragraph is right on the money.

It's becoming abundantly clear that Valerie Strauss is on pace to out-troll all the trolls who comment on her blog. For someone who trusts the CREDO study and Diane Ravitch's narrow viewpoints as if they were the word of God, you'd think she actually had something, like her kids' education, invested in public schools.

Superman is a movie and democrats are actually becoming informed and making decisions that the union doesn't like. Get over it. The rest of the country is moving on and you and your teacher union buddies are still crying wolf on conspiracy theories of privatization, the "demonizing" of teachers, and how everything else except schools should be responsible for student learning.

Reading this blog and its comments is like watching a desperate and whining child thrown a tantrum to avoid getting in trouble for punching his kid sister in the face. Good for a shake of the head and a chuckle at his seemingly endless bag of excuses, but certainly not for an honest word or, gasp, real news about the argument.

Dear DCKidsFirst,

Try to limit the hyperbole, and do exactly what you complain about in your own writing: Provide "an honest word or, gasp, real news about the argument." I would even settle for a fully developed argument.

If this is difficult for you, I can help you get started: First see the movie in question. If you have already done this, then ask yourself if it truly offers a balanced view of the material. Marshal your arguments and positions. Then provide specific pieces of evidence from the film that either support or refute an opinion. Please be specific as my 9th grade English teacher used to tell me.

You can certainly use a little bombastic hyperbole to spice things up, but try not to overdo it. What you have here is just dripping with over-the-top sarcasm and derision. By stating your position this way, it sounds as if your position comes before the DC Kids First position that you pretend to hold.

What's this about Obama's "extraordinary intellect?"

Why stroke him like that, Valerie?

Anyone with an "extraordinary intellect" wouldnt so intellectually impoverish the curriculum or spread neoliberal policies across the nation via such destructive "education reform," like Johnny Appleseed on speed. That's what our extraordinarily intellectual President is doing.

He is simply idiotic and/or a craven neoliberal politician when it comes to education policy. He is doing a world of harm to us. And to the children.

Like lacy, I am done with this "community organizer" who is wiping out communities centered around public schools, placing the sword of Damocles over real education...

Add to this that he is killing our unions, weakening our middle class. (Where is all the opposition aimed these days? At the two BIGGEST unions in the USA - teachers' unions - the NEA and AFT.)

I, for one, find nothing to admire or aspire to, when it comes to President Obama's intellect. He may talk a good (platitudinous) game, but what he does is bloody awful.
