A Mythical WBC Team That Could Never, Ever Lose

Fired up for the World Baseball Classic after last night's televised roster rollout? Me neither. As I've said before, the success of this thing -- at least in the U.S. market -- will depend solely on the star power of the players involved, and this year that star power has been submarined by injuries (real and imagined) and general indifference.

In fact, just for fun, let's build a roster -- we'll call our country East Apathy -- made entirely of non-WBC-participants (listed here along with the team they are NOT representing). I guarantee our team would whup any other real WBC squad:

C -- Joe Mauer (U.S.)
1B -- Mark Teixeira (U.S.)
2B -- Chase Utley (U.S.)
3B -- Albert Pujols (Dominican). (It takes some creativity to get both him and Teixeira into our lineup.)
SS -- Rafael Furcal (Dominican)
OF -- Manny Ramirez (Dominican)
OF -- Josh Hamilton (U.S.)
OF -- Lance Berkman (U.S.)
DH -- Ryan Howard (U.S.)

SP -- Johan Santana (Venezuela)
SP -- CC Sabathia (U.S.)
SP -- Cole Hamels (U.S.)

CL -- Brad Lidge (U.S.)

Speaking on behalf of all East Apathians, I love our team. Love the all-lefty rotation. Love the closer. Love trying to figure out a lineup card with all those sluggers. (Personally, I think I'd go Furcal-Berkman-Pujols-Ramirez-Teixeira-Hamilton-Howard-Utley-Mauer.)

I think they ought to just go ahead and give us the trophy now.

Yeah what's to like about the WBC?

How about team USA? Only superstars at every infield position. Plus backups of Jimmy Rollins and David Wright. Or maybe Jeter and Chipper are the backups? The two best center fielders not named Beltran, plus a possible future home run king in LF (Braun) who's hit 71 dingers in his first 2 years. Also, there are about 5 closers. And throw in Jake Peavy and Roy Oswalt; this team has me pretty fired up.

Any line-up card that has Ryan Howard batting 7th is too fun to pass up...

The two positions I can understand not wanting to play in the WBC are catcher and pitcher. Those are the two who risk the most injury/fatigue going into the season. Everyone else I'm not as sure about.

I wonder whether a change in the timing of the classic might make a difference? Seems like those who haven't played in winter ball could be at a disadvantage with the current timing.

BTW, it didn't get much (if any) recognition here, but I really enjoying watching the Caribbean World Series on MLB Network this year.
