Padres Trade Matt Bush to Blue Jays

Last week, Dave launched into the incredibly depressing story of Matt Bush, the Padres' No. 1 overall draft pick in 2004 who was dropped from the team last week after his latest ridiculous off-field incident ... in which he threw a high school lacrosse player and "represented" his high school by screaming "I'm Matt (expletive) Bush," and "(expletive) East County,". We should mention that he's now 23.

Well, someone was bound to take a flier on Bush, and today someone did. According to the San Diego Union-Tribune's Bill Center, Bush was traded to the Blue Jays for the ever ubiquitous "player to be named later".

Whether he can stay out of trouble in Toronto -- or pitch or hit any better than he did for San Diego, for that matter -- remains to be seen. One thing is certain: with the player to be named later likely a conditional matter (i.e. the better Bush plays and behaves, the better the player San Diego will get back), the Padres will either feel remorse with what went wrong or they'll never get anything out of a No. 1 overall pick.

How did the Nats not take a flier on this guy?

1. We love problem children
2. We can always use more minor league talent
3. Half our minor leage roster goes by "Player to be Named Later"

I just saw the Post's online discussion schedule for tomorrow. THE Jamie Moyer is hosting a discussion? That's kinda odd, but okay.

The guy picked up and threw a high school lacrosse player. And this is just a few days before he was supposed to be reporting to rehab training after Tommy John surgery.

I bet the Jays didn't even send a scout. All they had to do was read the police report! Throwing a baseball should be cake for this kid.

Seriously, though, in addition to his physical rehab, the Jays should consider sending Bush through substance abuse rehab. All three police incidents involved alcohol.
