Rodriguez Elects to Have Surgery on Hip

And so one of Alex Rodriguez's worst springs takes another turn as the embattled Yankees slugger has chosen to have surgery on his hip that will sideline the third baseman for 6-9 weeks.

This surgery to repair a torn labrum in his right hip is merely a stopgap as doctors feel that this will allow Rodriguez to play the rest of the season but will not completely fix the problem. As a result, Rodriguez will need to have another operation at the end of the season.

In addition to the torn labrum, Rodriguez had also been diagnosed with having a cyst in his hip. The cyst has since been drained and there was hope that Rodriguez could or would play through the Yankees' season despite the pain.

If all goes to schedule, Rodriguez should be back in May but until then the Yankees need to find a temporary third baseman. Cody Ransom is the Yankees' best in-house option but the 33-year-old has less than 200 major-league at bats in six seasons, batting .251 with 24 RBI. Or the Yankees might go a completely different direction (it is the Yankees after all). What do you guys think?

Mark Grutz or Ray Durham would be good options as supposed to trading and spending more dough for another top notch 3rd baseman. A temporary one at that. Plus, the Yanks have a knack for getting production out of vets in the twilight of their careers. Ruben Sierra anyone?
Maybe they can acquire Scott Rolen from the Jays in exchange for some NY Rangers box seats and a player to be named later?

Nick Cafardo is sometimes a random idea generator, but he suggests trading for Chone Figgins. They have Brandon Wood who could play 3d, and Figgins could move to CF once Rodriguez gets back. Garret Atkins is a more obvious target, and he also suggest Melvin Mora. Mora would fit the MacPhail sell high mode. Perhaps he's more willing to give Cody Ransom a shot than Cashman.

Betemit might also be a good fit.
