2009 Humiliating Predictions and Very Special Contest UPDATE

Hah! No, there's not really an update. But we really do want everyone to proffer up their season predictions in the comments below. So get going, before the season gets going and you miss out on the eerily alluded to "Very Special Prize". It'll be worth it folks, it really will.

OK, that is all. Now back to your regularly scheduled prediction post.

One ancillary benefit to the downsizing of America's newspapers, or at least the one for which I work, is that there is less room for the writers to embarrass themselves in front of a mass audience. Hooray for progress!

Case in point: This year, The Post's Baseball Preview section (which ran yesterday in the print edition, and which you can find here and here) was reduced by two pages, and among the cuts were my traditional (and traditionally dead-wrong) predictions of the playoffs and individual awards for the upcoming season. And really, it's just as well.

Last year, for example, I was the Washington Nationals of prognosticating -- in other words, almost certainly the worst in all of baseball. I had the Mariners winning the AL West (they finished last), and the Tigers winning not only the AL Central (they finished last) -- but the World Series, as well. (And no, I wasn't trying to suck up to my editor, an unabashed Tigers fan. I really believed it.) Eight teams made the playoffs, and I correctly picked only two -- and one of those (the Red Sox) made it as the AL wild card, not as the AL East champ, as I predicted.

In the individual awards, my picks were only slightly less abominable. I nailed the AL rookie of the year (Evan Longoria) and NL manager of the year (Lou Piniella), but whiffed on everything else. In my most egregiously incorrect pick, I had Justin Verlander (he went 11-17, 4.84) winning the AL Cy Young -- not that anyone ultimately picked the right guy (Cleveland's Cliff Lee).

So, here we are a year later, and thanks to some well-conceived space cuts, I've been spared the ignominy of another embarrassing slate of picks in the newspaper. Whew.

Except... oh, what's this? We have a baseball blog now. And there are no space limitations to it. (Look! I'm almost 300 words into this post, which is ostensibly for the purpose of making my 2009 picks, and I haven't made a single one!)

So, here's the deal. We'll turn this into a contest. I'll put my picks below -- all six division winners, the two wild cards, the two pennant winners, the World Series champ, and all eight of the major individual awards -- and invite everyone who reads this blog, plus my fellow BI bloggers Cam and CJ, to post their own predictions in the comments section.

We'll keep tabs on the predictions (the deadline for submitting will be Monday afternoon, even though the season technically starts Sunday night), and at the end of the postseason we'll award a Very Special Prize (as soon as we think of one) to the best prognosticator. For tabulating results, let's say:

*One point for each correct playoff pick (half a point if your division-champ pick makes the playoffs via the wild card, and vice-versa).
*One point for each correct award pick.
*Two points for each correct World Series participant.
*Three points for correctly picking the World Series champ.
*For tiebreak purposes, predict the Nationals' win total for 2009.

Here goes my picks:

AL East: Red Sox
AL Central: Indians
AL West: Angels
AL wild card: Yankees
NL East: Mets
NL Central: Cubs
NL West: Diamondbacks
NL wild card: Dodgers

World Series: Red Sox over Mets

AL MVP: Grady Sizemore, Indians
AL Cy Young: Jon Lester, Red Sox
AL Rookie: Travis Snider, Blue Jays
AL Manager: Terry Francona, Red Sox

NL MVP: David Wright, Mets
NL Cy Young: Brandon Webb, Diamondbacks
NL Rookie: Tommy Hanson, Braves
NL Manager: Jerry Manuel, Mets

Nationals' win total: 73.

So, there you have it. The goal here is not to beat my picks -- that would be too easy. No, the goal is to beat your fellow BI readers and win the Very Special Prize. Fire away.

I just read the post where the deadline was set at 1:10. Does the fact that my picks were 19 minutes late disqualify me? I took a late lunch today... :-/
