Matt Wieters Is a Golden (Bobblehead) God
No, this is not an addition to the Wieters Facts site. Nor is it to say Matt Wieters is planning to jump off of a roof and into a pool while rocking a sweet mustache.
No, as it turns out, somewhere in Prince George's County there is hidden a golden Matt Wieters bobblehead doll.
The Bowie Baysox - Baltimore's Class AA affiliate - has an interesting promotion going. The first fan to find the golden Wieters bobblehead and return it to the team's headquarters will win a real Matt Wieters prize pack that also offers the opportunity to throw out the first pitch at a Baysox game. Clues to the whereabouts of the gilded catcher can be found hidden on the Baysox's website.
I have to admit, I've never heard of this type of promotion for a player, let alone one that hasn't played for the franchise in question this year (Wieters has spent the entire season in Class AAA Norfolk). However the combination of competition, scavenger hunt and Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory has me intrigued. I mean, what other promotions like this could teams do? Could the Nats go in search of a Stephen Strasburg Money Tree?
