Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

No, it's not nearly as significant as the legion of FAILs documented by Agent Steinz over at the D.C. Sports Bog, but Nick Johnson had a pretty notable bat fail on this foul ball after Wednesday night's lengthy rain delay.

The Legacy of (the Other Type of) Drug Use

The Rangers' strength and conditioning coach, Jose Vazquez, and Manager Ron Washington are both openly worried about outfielder Josh Hamilton's ability to stay healthy because of his past cocaine addiction.

When It Clicked: Mariners RHP Felix Hernandez

Felix Hernandez was 19 when he broke into the major leagues -- to stay -- and 21 when he one-hit the Red Sox in a game that was supposed to be all about Daisuke Matsuzaka's Fenway Park debut. Still, when we asked Hernandez to tell us when it clicked, we...

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

This girl in Arlington wins the award for best use of a rain delay after she got sick of sitting in the heat during a torrential downpour (yes, it's still hot, sticky and humid when the rain pours down in the DFW corridor) and decided to take matters into her own hands. Hey, just because the Blue Jays and Rangers couldn't play doesn't mean she had to suffer, right?

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Tuesday was not a good day for Chris Young. Not only did he have to watch someone circle the bases in front of an obnoxious scoreboard graphic, he had to do it four times ... one person (Andre Eithier) twice. If only he was shorter, the HOME RUN!!! banner image on the scoreboard wouldn't be right above his head ...

The List: Baseball's Hardest Throwers

So, Stephen Strasburg's fastball has some giddy-up, as the old scouts say. He reportedly has been clocked as high as 103 mph and is said to be consistently in the high 90s. (On the two occasions I've seen him pitch in person, he was more like 95-98, but who am...

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Tigers outfielder Josh Anderson has some wheels -- get it, wheels in the Motor City, current economic climate notwithstanding -- but we're pretty sure he isn't Superman. He'd have to be to save this White Sox homer. The bigger question is whether he could save himself from a faceplant or separated shoulder.

Does the MLB Draft Need a Medical Combine?

Some insiders are openly calling for MLB to take a page directly from the NFL Draft playbook, with a Cleveland Indians officially claiming the league desperately needs a pre-draft medical combine, where teams could assess the relative health of all the players they're considering picking.

Talking Behind Their Back: Athletics

A pitiful three-game showing in Oakland put an end to Baltimore's disastrous six-game West Coast road trip. How bad was the Oakland swing? Cesar Izturis had to have an emergency appendectomy. Felix Pie fouled a ball of his throat. Two starting pitchers failed to make it out of the first...

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Finally, a functional reason for the Padres' camoflauge uniforms: Disappearing into the background in mid-steal to hide where they are from a catcher. Now THAT is a brilliant uniform trait. If only we'd picked up on it before Tony Gwynn Jr. was caught mid-theft yesterday and crouched down on the dirt.

How Can the Pirates Keep Trading OFs?

Last week, the Pirates traded away an All-Star outfielder, sending Nate McLouth to the Braves for a panoply of prospects, though none are viewed as sure-fire major leaguers. Amazingly, McLouth is the third starting outfielder the Pirates have sent away in the past season, each of which was among the...
