While all the players and coaches as well as plenty of fans left the field when a swarm of bees settled in at Petco Park, this intrepid usher decided it was time to salute our new leaders. And it seemed to work, at least until beekeepers vanquished the ball of bees that had followed their queen down the left-field line. No word on whom this usher has now pledged his service to in the interim.
Every summer, hundreds of young ballplayers, fresh out of the draft, disperse to dozens of far-flung locales -- rookie ball, instructional leagues, short-season Class A -- to begin their professional careers. For some it is their first extended time away from home, and their first time competing against players who...

NL Quote of the Night "It was a pretty thick wall of bees and I really didn't want a piece of it." -- Padres left fielder Kyle Blanks, who is allergic bees and was near the epicenter of Thursday's swarm Houston Astros 7, San Diego Padres 2 Some unexpected visitors...
Astros catcher Pudge Rodriguez got a friendly pat on the head from his former owner, a guy who happened to go on and serve as the President of the United States. Evidently it was a hot day (see the former Pres.'s shirt), though something tells us the air conditioning in the George W. Bush Owner's Suite is pretty strong ...

Why Cardinals catcher Yadier Molina decided it would be a good idea to inspect the lower leg of pitcher Joel Pineiro is beyond us. Clearly, Pineiro was suffering from a cramp and needed a nice drink of water ... or for someone to pull his leg. Looking at it? Probably not going to help much.
The Washington Nationals have a long, storied history of speedy (back in the day, we would have said "toolsy") center fielders who, alas, come up short with the bat -- a legacy that appears to have found its heir apparent with Tuesday's trade for Nyjer Morgan, a terrific defender who...

Hey, when you get punched out by a pitch that's clearly a ball, what are you supposed to do, fume? Well, actually that is what a lot of batters do, isn't it. Nevermind. Regardless, that's not Luis Castillo's approach. He's far too happy with life, and would rather just laugh at the act Fernando Rodney put on in yesterday's Moment of Levity: The Big Picture.
When last we checked in on the races for baseball's individual awards and team superlatives, a month ago, the Yankees and Rangers led their respective divisions, the Mets were comfortably above .500, the Rockies were uncomfortably below .500, and Joel Hanrahan's ERA was only 5.40. diti Indeed, much has changed...

Every closer has his own celebration. Jonathan Papelbon does the excitable fist pump, Mariano Rivera is a low-key gentleman and Trevor Hoffman can almost exude nonchalance. Detroit's Fernando Rodney? He likes to mimic a Las Vegas stand-up at the end of his act. Either than, or he's going to shoot his arms down and then back up again vigorously and try to fly away. Don't think it's happening Fernando. Sorry bud.
After closing out interleague play with an 11-7 record, thanks to a series victory over the Nationals, the Orioles look to end a seven-game skid against Boston as they host the AL East-leading Red Sox.
