A Very Long Distance Ejection

Philadelphia center fielder Shane Victorino doesn't seem like the likeliest candidate for a contentious ejection from a game. He's happy go-lucky, always smiling and seems to embody the total ethos of his Hawaiian homeland.

On Sunday, all that goodwill evaporated quickly, and led to one of the strangest ejections you'll ever see: a home plate umpire throwing out a man playing in deep center field.

Victorino was tossed after he threw his hands up in disgust in center after a pitch from Phillies reliever Rodrigo Lopez. And once he was tossed, Victorino made sure he was going to get the most of his ejection, sprinting in to home plate from center field to argue with umpire Ed Rapuano.

After brushing off catcher Paul Bako and being restrained by manager Charlie Manuel and first baseman Ryan Howard, Victorino took his place in the clubhouse. After a cold shower he was a lot more rational about the entire experience, yet still seemed perturbed by Rapuano's calls, and the fact that he was ejected from an umpire he felt he was on good terms with.

"I definitely had no intentions of touching him or anything like that. I love the guy and that's why I'm so upset. He's one of those guys you can play grab-ass with and have fun with out there on the field. I think that's why it's more frustrating to me, that it was him that got my first ejection from a major league baseball game."

See, he sounds happy-go-lucky again with an hour or two of being ejected from a game! How can you go wrong with that?

Here's the video footage of Victorino's big charge, and note just how active Ryan Howard has to get to hold the spritely center fielder back. Remember, Howard stands 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds; Victorino is 5-9, 160. that's seven inches and 70 pounds Howard had on him, and the girthy first baseman had to use all of it to hold him back ...
