Mariners Land Bill Hall

The Brewers had quietly let it be known for awhile that they'd love to offload outfielder Bill Hall on any team that really wanted him. Well, it turns out that a team really wanted him, after he was designated for assignment: The Mariners. Seattle and Milwaukee agreed to a trade yesterday afternoon that sends Hall to the Mariners in exchange for a minor league pitcher, Ruben Flores.

Hall is anything but a slam dunk for success in Seattle. Mired in a season-long slump (he's hitting just .201 with a .265 OBP), Hall plays in both the outfield and at third base, but he's more of a natural infielder, which means he will almost assuredly displace Jack Hannahan at third for the time being. Of course, Hannahan is only playing at the hot corner because Adrian Beltre suffered one of the most painful sounding injuries in the history of mankind -- testicular bleeding caused by a one-hopping hot shot off a White Sox bat that Beltre took last week. There are rumors that Beltre may be lost for the season with the injury (it might require surgery ... yeah, we know, it keeps getting more and more painful sounding), and with his future in Seattle anything but certain, the Mariners felt a need to move for more cover at third base.

If Beltre does return, Hall would probably get a decent look in the Mariners' outfield, where some are casting doubt on Ryan Langerhans' ability to hit with enough power (or a high enough average) to stick around in an everyday role.

Is this a big winner for Seattle? Maybe. Milwaukee has agreed to pay an undisclosed chunk of Hall's 2010 salary, which undoubtedly makes it a lot more palatable for the Mariners to take on. But Hall will still need to show that he can get his averages back to his career numbers -- .253 BA, .312 OBP, .446 SLG -- to justify the $8.4 million he's due next year, let alone the $9.25 million option the team will hold for 2011.

Did the Brewers eat Hall's salary or did the Mariners take it on?

The Brewers ate a large, undisclosed majority of it. They've also agreed to take on some of the 2010 salary, too, though the amount they're assuming next year is still completely unknown.
