Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Here's a hint: Dodgers pitcher Jon Garland, looking dejected on the mound, was pitching to the Padres. Here's a much bigger, slap-yourself-in-the-forehead hint: Those video boards don't have a "K" and a bunch of zeroes.

The Wrap: AL

There were a lot of good quotes from Thursday's games so let's enjoy them all by having a quote to go with each recap. Minnesota Twins 8, Detroit Tigers 3 "We just didn't want to see them celebrating." -- Twins outfielder Denard Span on his team keeping the Tigers from...

NL Quote of the Night: "I've known this day was coming for a while. I was kind of emotional out there today. I did have some tears in my eyes. ... It's a really great day for me and I can't thank the organization enough." -- San Francisco's Rich Aurilia,...

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

We've always been skeptics of Dodgers Manager Joe Torre's mandatory hair cut policy, but clearly his appetite for short hair has waned since Manny Ramirez arrived on the scene last year. The slugger's dreadlocks have gotten so out of hand that, as you can see on this recent swing against the Padres, they often can get in the way of his actual vision. Now, we're not optometrists or professional baseball players, but this seems a bit counteractive to us. Just a thought. Maybe a trim would help Manny snap out of his recent power slump?

A Sign-Stealing Scandal in Detroit?

The Twins awoke this morning to discover (largely via media members) a video was circulating around the Internet purporting to show Twins catcher Joe Mauer signaling signs, or perhaps pitch locations, to teammate Jason Kubel on Tuesday night, when Mauer was a runner on second base and Kubel was at the plate facing Tigers ace Justin Verlander.

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

See, in San Diego Tony Gwynn Jr. would have been able to make an unobstructed attempt on this homer hit by Arizona's Chad Tracy. Instead, the ball was struck in Arizona, which is why we call it "Chad Tracy's home run" as opposed to "Tony Gwynn Jr.'s spectacular, home run-stealing grab." Minor difference there.

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Sure, this is a pretty great shot, but you know what makes it even better? Check out the raised fist of the one man in this photo wearing a Red Sox hat. That's right, he seems to be cheering for the ball to hit Yankee fans. Amazing. And to think, with an agile move he might have been able to snag this Jacoby Ellsbury foul for himself ...

Which ALDS Series Will the Yankees Pick?

Here's the deal: By virtue of clinching the AL's best record, the Yankees get to pick which best-of-five Division Series they prefer: Series "A" or "B." The difference? Series "A" has an extra off-day between Games 1 and 2, which stretches the series out in such a way (the five...

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture

Evidently this is what it looks like when you're managing a team headed to the playoffs, and one of your key relievers gets decked by a line drive. That's what happened to the Dodgers' Charlie Haeger moments before Joe Torre trudged back to the dugout with his head in his hand. Just imagine what he'd look like if L.A. was trailing Colorado in the NL West!

Best Team in the NL (And It Really Isn't Close)

There is one true juggernaut out there in Contender Land, but you probably can't name their starting rotation or their leadoff hitter. They are the Colorado Rockies, and they are the best team in the NL -- dare I add, by far.
