Bobby Cox Can See the Sunset He's Riding Into
To many, the biggest surprise about Cox's announcement that he'd come to terms on a one-year extension is that he announced his retirement at the same time. As he put it, the only way Cox was ever going to retire was by giving himself a time line and sticking to it. Now he has one.

Red Sox Designate Smoltz
Despite one of the greatest pedigrees among pitchers in the past 25 years, John Smoltz was designated for assignment by the Red Sox this afternoon. There were no known lingering injury issues for Smoltz, so this was a move made purely based on his performance.

Red Sox Land Martinez for Less Than Imagined

Smoltz Enters the Superunknown

Glavine is Done ... For Now
Tom Glavine disclosed that he has no plans to sign with a new team this season in a conversation with Buck Lanford of FOX 5 Atlanta. Proving that even he is hip with modern technology, Glavine shot Lanford a text message that spelled out the end of his season, though not necessarily the end of his career.
