Red Sox defections leave leadership void
After three consecutive seasons with nearly no turnover, the Red Sox are hemorrhaging members of their front office and managerial staff. That's two key departures in one week.

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture
Here's a hint: Dodgers pitcher Jon Garland, looking dejected on the mound, was pitching to the Padres. Here's a much bigger, slap-yourself-in-the-forehead hint: Those video boards don't have a "K" and a bunch of zeroes.

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture
Giants shortstop Freddie Sanchez needed a little help getting over San Diego's Chase Headley earlier this week, so he dialed into his legendary hopscotch career from elementary school. Legend has it that a young Sanchez once had 12 straight perfect hopscotch runs before the course had to be re-chalked.

Moment of Levity: The Big Picture
The man you see on the right in the photo above is Tony Gwynn Jr. Unlike his father, Tony Jr. is not the largest man you'll see in a baseball uni, standing a relatively modest 6 feet and 185 pounds. Short stop David Eckstein, however, really is as small as you imagine he is. And as he looks. What's the final tally? Try 5 foot 6, 170 pounds. And there's no way he's actually 170 pounds. Not a chance. Lot at him, he's being swallowed up by a 185-pound man in this shot! It's like watching your teenage cousin play in the major leagues. Ridiculous.

Which Picks Actually Signed
Stephen Strasburg wasn't the only first round draft pick to leave it until late to sign his first professional deal yesterday. A host of teams closed on their opening picks from the 2009 entry draft, with No. 2 and 3 overall picks Dustin Ackley (Mariners) and Donovan Tate (Padres) also agreeing to deals within the final two hours of Monday evening.
