Marines Waiting on Basic Supplies

U.S. Marines pushing deeper into Taliban territory in Afghanistan’s Helmand River Valley are short of basic equipment and supplies ranging from radios and vehicles to uniforms.

Here in Garmsir District, critical supplies of food, water and ammunition are being dropped to troops by helicopters ferrying sling-loads to bypass roads implanted with bombs, leaving little room to carry other gear.

Several Marines from one company, for example, ripped their pants during an arduous foot march and are still waiting for replacements — some in boxer shorts, officers said.

“We’re short vehicles, we’re short frog-suits [uniforms] ... radios are trickling in,” said Gunnery Sgt. Robert Larosa of 2nd Battalion, 8th Marine Regiment. Larosa said that the lack of basic gear is unprecedented in his experience, which includes seven other deployments. “This is a first,” he said.

Another logistical challenge is that Marine camps and outposts here are mainly being built from scratch because the Marines are the first coalition forces to move into southern Helmand in significant numbers, and the area lacks existing facilities to house them.
Many supplies did not begin to arrive until the Marines themselves deployed, Larosa said, and with intensive operations underway, their delivery is still lagging behind.

With such urgent demand for critical items, non-essentials such as mail, toiletries and tobacco have become rare luxuries at Marine outposts. “They either send chow and water or mail — I’d much rather have the water” in the 100-plus degree heat, said Larosa.

Still, the deprivation is taking a toll. “No mail, no PX. People are starting to get ornery,” said one officer. Mail has arrived about three times in the past month and a half.

Marines in the battalion are exploiting every possible opportunity to get supplies needed for the troops. For example, when Brig. Gen. Larry Nicholson flew in for a commanders' meeting at Camp Delhi today, he was asked to bring with him a fresh supply of plastic "wag" bags that Marines use to dispose of human waste.

"Hey, did we get the wag bags?" Nicholson asked his staff before departing.

Earlier this week, Larosa decided to launch a one-man supply chain. Armed with orders from his men and a large plastic crate, he jumped on a helicopter to the nearest large base, Camp Leatherneck near the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah. Once there, armed with $1,200 of his own money, he literally stripped the PX shelves of cigarettes and chewing tobacco.

Larosa’s shopping spree irritated customers at Leatherneck, but, arriving back at the camp in Garmsir, he was greeted as a conquering hero.

“This is my craziest deployment yet,” he said. He is keeping the stash of tobacco at the foot of his cot until he can distribute it all to those who placed orders.

Dear DOD Logistics Pogues,

Get these folks some pants, water, MRE and Copenhagen before I use all of my vaction time and savings to take it to them personally.

Maybe FedEx should be hired as a contractor.

Thank you 2/8 Marines for putting up with this.

Keep it random, keep it lethal.

Heard on the news that some people want to pass a law that our troops cannot smoke. Good grief - these men and women have enough stress already and now some anti-tobacco freakoids want to take away something that gives them a little pleasure and is NOT against the law!!!!

If this is the "freedom" and "democracy" they are fighting for, then it might as well be dictatorship by the health nuts. It is not a good habit, but I can think of a lot worse - all we have to do is look at our politicians and see prime examples of what not to do. Isn't it funny that the very people who want to dictate our lives are the ones to break the laws?

So anxious was Barack to engage in the "good" war in Afghanistan as opposed to the "bad" Bush war in Iraq (which we were actually winning) that once again lack of proper preparation and forethought has left our men without the equipment, etc. they should have. How long before the cries to leave are heard?

The bean-counters at the Pentagon want to take away these Marines tobacco privileges? I'd send them smokes and dip, but the mail isn't getting there. Kudos to the commander.

you are really clueless aren't you you poor dear!...The beaucracy and the hipocrosy from the GOP during the Iraq war was unprecedented...No one had the correct or enough armor, they lacked the basics for many months. Rumsfeld, after being told by military brass that troops needed these things scoffed at them and put them in their place. Only after Gates and the new defense admin step in that these things were addressed. Obama is trying to fix messes made by the idiots that were voted into office by the evangelists and people that actually beleive that religion and politics should be together! I hated the last 8 years of blind driving...I do agree congress needs to be flushed, but not replaced with bible thumpers!

So where is the headline attacking the Commander in Chief?? Remember the headline bashing Bush!! I mean full front page wrath at Bush!

So, now we have Obama the big "D" Commander in chief! He, not Bush, just sent these units into Afghanistan in the past 6 months! So let's hear it for Obama!!

Of course none of you pathetic lefties know anything about logistics or military tactics or strategies, nor do you really care!

Afghanistan is land locked and surrounded by nations unfriendly to our mission in Afghanistan! So we have to fly every piece of supplies half way around the world and drop them into a mountainous region with no place for airports.

This is why the small footprint and CIA strategy worked and was advocated by Bush and smart leaders. Of course, Obama just tosses in some troops and washes his hands of the mess? And, he moves onto his Marxist dreams for the good ole USA!!

Now our most effective troops in Afghanistan -- the CIA -- are going to be put in prison for secrecy and doing their job by Eric Holder(0bama AG, or tortured forever with Congressional hearings by Nancy Pelosi!!

It is time to get this picture corrected!

Do you think it may have something to do with the fact that the pentagon is blowing 150 million a copy on a jet plane and billions on that V-22 Osprey piece of junk that still does not fly missions instead of basics for the ground pounders? As an ex USMC I can say with some authority this is standard operating procedure for the paper shufflers and number crunchers.
Billions for weapon systems that seldom work as advertised and pennies for the troops.

This is a failure of the Generals.

If only 90% of them had malaria and dysentery, no food or water and no ammo...

...then the biggest A55HOLE of them all; fatmouth - MacArthur would order them to attack like he did at Buna in 1942!

To be a General, all you really have to know is:

"Starving, sick, dehydrated men who cannot move, cannot fight". Anybody who can function, given more people, guns and bombs than the other side MIGHT (vietnam) eventually win. But without supply, you are certainly doomed.

MacArthur never learned it, apparently neither did the current General-jacka55.

Unemployment, real honest-to-god people out of work and looking for work, not massaged government numbers, is around 20%, the highest since the Great Depression. Our soldiers cannot get basic food items and equipment and live in barracks that kill them via electrocution. KBR, that gigantic Haliburton abortion, does this, has served troops spoiled food, ran those filthy military hospitals where badly wounded troops were ignored for days on end. lying in filth. ITT sold our ultra secret night vision technology to the CHinese who, in turn, make cheap night vision equipment and sell to to the North Korean's and Al Qaida and Iran. The Indian's, who flood us with cheap guest workers and survive via a twisted and sick parasiticle relationship on this country sell nuclear technology, cruise missile guidance systems, all stole from the U.S. by their H1-B guest workers, and the government looks the other way , even participates in a coverup to keep the politically incorrect news concerning the failure of their global policies from being made generally known. What's wrong with this picture? Our political representatives are self serving hacks. Our businesses are nets of treasonous cockroaches. We have sold our technological crown jewels, traded our jobs and factories, peddled our future, and all of this is now known as "free enterprise" (and, evidently, visiting a prostitute, if we are to believe the example set for us by our representatives, is a new kind of marriage). Meanwhile the 'NEW BOSS' ('MCGREEN BERET') committed these MARINES without the proper supply lines to support their mission. Didn't he pay attention during the classes about Napoleon and the Nazis invading Russia? Expect the Pentagon to swing into action on these "unusual" procurement requests: clothes, ammunition, fuel, food, toilet paper. First, they'll appoint a commission to study the matter. They'll eliminate any trace of waste, fraud, and abuse. Several years later, after eliminating the toilet paper, they'll put out a request for proposals geared so that only one favored corporate entity has any chance of winning a contract award. After the award there will be the inevitable protests, that will be adjudicated within six months or so. Then the delivery schedule will be negotiated, unless recompetition is ordered.

You are so right crazyeagle. Logistical support in the back country takes time and there are few places in this world as deep and dark as the Hindu Kush. We need to know about these issues and push our government to correct things as quickly as possible. Unfortunately, it is unrealistic to expect rear echelon kind of supplies and support for advance party, front line troops at the initial phases of setting up fire bases. The priority is food, water, ammunition, medical supplies and construction materials. Once the forward fire base is reasonably secure and stocked with these priority elements, then things should improve in due order. If they don't, we should get mad, but for now, it is building up and securing the position that matters most.

Can anyone read this and not scream BULL? If the Marines went into the area the second week of July, as reported by the Post, how is it that they ONLY got mail three times in the last six weeks? They have been out of Leatherneck for a few weeks, and out of Tobacco? No PX established already? Where is the Coffee-Bar!! Oh the Horror! Each Marine is ordered to carry an extra set of cammies, if they lose both we share, no one is patrolling in the fruit of the looms. The tone of this article is skewed to have the Marines appear to be a bunch of rank amateurs vice warfighters that can live hard for months on end. Key point that is totally inaccurate is that "some are in boxers". Really? At 140 degrees most of us are Commando!!! All I can say is "just because it is in the news does not make it reality". As a Marine Gunnery Sergeant with 12 years of service, I can say that this is blog is rather funny to me. First of all, in the past 12 years I have seen quite a few news articles that are either grossly misinformed or biased against the military. It seems to me that this one is both. The first issue I've got is with Marines lacking frog-suits. What the article fails to tell is that these frog-suits are brand new uniform items that are still in initial production. Of course there's going to be a shortage. But Marines still have their desert cammies that they can wear. I personnaly do not believe the reporter's claim that there are Marines walking around in boxers. The reference she utilized was "officers". Being that this is not specific, it sounds to me that the reporter is reporting hearsay and rumors as news. Second, as many other Marines have posted here, the reporter does not understand or appreciate the logistical complications that come with creating a new Forward Operating Base (FOB). These complications are made even harder because much of Afghanistan is still in the 14th Century when it comes to technology. The country has very few roads. The ones it does have are not built for heavily-armored MRAPs. However, they are full of IED's. Both of those things make logistical convoys kind of difficult. Resupply by air is also difficult because most of the country is mountainous. The thin high-altitude air is not very conducive to helicopter operations. You also have to remember that air assets (both helicopter and C-130's) are already stretched thin by current combat operations as well as logistical support for other parts of Afghanistan. The reporter doesn't mention any of these important factors. Instead, the message implied is that our government and military are quite imcompetent and do not care about service members. This practice has become quite frequent with our politically biased news organizations. It's so frequent and so bad that it has become comical. What's more comical than that are all the left-wing and right-wing nuts who come on message boards like this and post their crazy ideology without regards to any facts. The rest of the civilian population just reads this and doesn't know any better. Good thing we have Marines like MarineOnPoint and crazyeagle who can come here and put out some good old-fashioned common sense.

I am the mother of one of those Marines in this Company, and I find it deplorable that we are NOT taking care of our soldiers any better than that......if we send them out there, then the powers that be ought to see they get what they need. Get with it Washington!!!!!!!!

I also am the mother of one of those Marines over there. What is frustrating and concerning to me is that I have been sending care packages (at least one a week) for several months now - most filled with common necessities. My marine has not received any of them. So where are those packages? I support my son and have tried to send him basics such as deodorant, soap, socks, baby wipes, etc. because I knew supplies were scarce and he needs them. When I've sent boxes, I've included enough for several of our guys over there, trying to help as many as I could. I know several marine moms with the same story. Where are our care packages ending up? It is very, very difficult to keep sending care packages over there when they aren't being received. The boxes that aren't being received by our sons are numerous -- it's not like there are a couple of boxes in the corner of a tent that have been forgotten and are going unnoticed.

Where are they going?

Anyone who's been forward deployed, since Moses was a corporal, has known the tuff times.

There's only so much logistical capability to go around. That means going out and coming in.

Like the grunts, I'm sure the '4 shops are doing their best.

Making do with what you've got is nothing new to armies through out time. Fortunately in this case, the light at the end of the tunnel is visible.

@marinemom, contact your marine's command to seek answers. I would suggest holding packages until you hear from your son.
