About Behind the Numbers

Welcome to Behind the Numbers, a look inside the data that helps define political activity and debates. Behind the Numbers will feature looks at interesting bits of information from polls, surveys, and voting data -- much of it collected by The Washington Post and washingtonpost.com, but also from external sources. We aim to highlight interesting trends, new findings and analysis for our readers, complementing The Post's extensive coverage of politics by bringing to life facets of the data.

The contributors for Behind the Numbers are Jon Cohen and Jennifer Agiesta of The Post's polling staff.

I'm frequently bemused by people who self identify themselves as "Conservative" (capital "C" intended). "Bemused" because when the issues are addressed they are frequently contradictory and/or inconsistent.
I'd like to read some in depth surveys or polls seeking out their core beliefs.

Keep up the good work.

It is my wish that all of our troops be extracted from the middle east and we order the oil and send the check, period.

God bless us all.

I don't believe this writer's numbers. Where did you get such a pole? This contradicts everything I have read, heard or seen, relative to the American publics view on immigration. My understanding crosses parties; Republican nor Democrat agrees with a government that allows the borders of the country to remain unprotected. I believe this to be a bogus story. Shame on the Post for allowing it. Oh, it could be written by someone who may be illegial. These days you just don't know.
