Virginia Goes to the Polls, BTN Takes to the Airwaves

As Virginia voters prepare to head to the polls Tuesday for one of the nation's few odd-year statewide elections, a Washington Post poll shows a divided political landscape: one more favorable to Democrats than any since they lost control of the statehouse in 1999.

Half of likely voters in Virginia say they'd prefer that the Democrats wind up in control of their state legislature after Tuesday's vote. 42 percent want Republicans to remain in control.
The poll found that voters are generally content - 57 percent say the state is going in the right direction and 67 percent approve of Democratic Gov. Tim Kaine's job performance a year into his tenure - but they are less than satisfied with the state legislature.

More than half of voters disapprove of the job the legislature is doing, with more disapproving of Republicans in the General Assembly than the Democrats.

The vote Tuesday could turn out to be a bellwether for next year's Presidential contest. Virginia has not given its 13 electoral votes to a Democrat for President since 1964, but the poll suggests next year might be different: 52 percent said they would prefer that a Democrat win next November.

Full question wording and methodology for the Post's Virginia survey can be found here.
