Obama approval sinks in the South

President Obama heads south to Savannah, Georgia Tuesday to pitch his economic program. But in Washington Post-ABC News polls during his tenure, residents of the nation's southern states -- particularly whites -- have expressed broad doubts about the effectiveness of the stimulus package and Obama's leadership.

Last summer, six months after the package passed, about four in 10 Southerners said Obama's economic program was making the economy better, approximately the same as in the rest of the nation. But by October, that figure had dipped to 35 percent in the South while holding near four in 10 elsewhere. One year into Obama's term, the South's take on the stimulus remained doubtful: just 34 percent said it was helping.

There is broader skepticism among whites in the South. In August, among that group, 34 percent said the economic program was making things better. By January, it had fallen to 27 percent. Three in 10 said it was making things worse.

Beyond his economic program, the South has not been a friendly region for Obama. His approval rating dipped below 50 percent there in a Post-ABC poll conducted in September, before it had done so anywhere else in the country. Among whites in the South, it fell below the 50-percent mark three months earlier.

In the latest Post-ABC survey, 49 percent of Southerners approved of the way Obama is handling his presidency. Among Southern whites, the president's approval rating has fallen below four in 10, the only region of the country where that has happened; 37 percent gave him positive marks. On the economy, just 32 percent of whites in the South said they approve.

Views on the stimulus and Obama's handling of the economy by region are below.

White, male, racistist. The South has never gotten over the Civil War. When Johnson signed the 1964 Civil Rights Act the South went GOP. All because they just can't move forward from being racistist. I say let the South secede. No big loss.

It's not just the South, it's not just "whites", it's not just the Stimulus. It's about how bad this President has turned out to be. If you take away the die hard liberal, he can do no wrong sector of this poll. the numbers stink. President Potatoe Head has let his ego run away with reason. He is no longer interested in making health care better. He is only interested in getting something; anything, passed. Botoxic Pelosi is the same. She would rather watch the Democratic Party sink than admit that the plan is wrong. How many Dumbocrats do you expect to "take one for the team"? The entire Congress as well as the executive branch need to start listening to the winds blowing out of every part of this country. The people who care; the ones who actually have a stake in what is going on and how bad our future looks right now, are very unhappy. We are getting vocal and come November, we will speak our dissatisfaction with the current status quo. Washington DC listen up.... you are there to make this country better for all of us; not just the one who have bought your votes. The internet has made it possible for the voters to look at your campaign finances and how you vote. It makes me wonder how you can look at yourselves in the mirror each morning after what you have done to our country.

Why be surprised? This is one of the worst disasters to hit America. We have a President who is totally unprepared to fill the job. This is not Chicago, this is America

His continuing visits to states is nothing more than an extension of being on the campaign trail. Ob is attempting to use his tongue rather than his brain to get things done. It is not only the Repubs but more important , the independents who think the Pres. is doing a terrible job. Funny, but even lib polls show OB with poor ratings and the Congress with a 14% approval rating. Because they are dumber, it will take a longer time for the Dems. to see the direction we are going in is the wrong way.

Seems to me the media is intent on making this an issue about race whenever it can. Why else would they segregate polling in the South, but nowhere else?

Perhaps Obama polls poorly in the South because unemployment numbers are really bad in the South and they've felt no positive effects from the stimulus?

No, that wouldn't be sensational enough.

Posted by: boosterprez | March 2, 2010 12:54 PM | Report abuse

Will any media outlet ever have the balls to talk about why the republican party has become an all-white party (99%), with dying demographics? It is a remarkable story, instead all they talk about is how Obama "can't win in the south", or Appalachian mountains, or the "working class white vote". This is a remarkable story that no one talks about. Race is only one element, too.

Many of you thrive on the race card~ whites against blacks! If I recall tens of millions of whites VOTED for this inexperienced man who voted "present" and was inbedded with corrupt ACORN! People it is LACK of experience not his COLOR! Even ML King said the judge on charactor! People are doing that today and find Obama to be lacking such with his campaign of lies.

Shingo56, man are you stupid. Do a little research before you run your stupid mouth. The republicans split off the democrat party because the democrats were the slave holders and the founders of the KKK. It the republican leader lincoln who freed the slaves as the republican party hated slavery and thereby emancipated the slaves with the defeat of the democrat confederate army. The republicans have always been the black man's best friend, however it seems the black man will always take the easy way out if offered. Affirmative action and entitlements offered by the KKK democrats have been readily accepted by the lazy black people thereby keeping them dumbed down and on the democrat plantation. You can lead a negro to water but he wants dope and booze.

It's amazing just how much of a polarizing figure Obama has become. Part of his campaign last year -- that attracted many folks who voted for him -- was to show that he was above all the pettiness. People then thought -- 'well Bush was so divisive and polarizing - but this guy is so positive'...

I think the unhappiness with him predominantly stems from essentially wasting a year on "comprehensive", "universal" healthcare... He and his party aren't on the same page as the people. While the media [especially MSNBC and FOX] like to sensationalize the Tea Party's loud "far right" activism -- I think there are many opposing Obama a bit more quietly.

Obama is not a moderate -- he is clearly a far left liberal -- perhaps even a radical. And not only is he potentially a radical, but he is also incompetent and fails to be as transparent as he said he would be.

First, there is nothing interesting in the finding that Obama's approval ratings among southern whites has fallen, since one would naturally expect the southern black voters to be the last to abandon ship.

Second, when Obama campaigned, he obviously lied a considerable amount. He led the voters to believe he was a centrist healer and, of course, he was a radical socialist unwilling to compromise. Those who voted for him didn't listen to the comment that no one really knew him and that he had no experience.

It doesn't take the polls to tell us Obama isn't a leader, but he is doing just what the outside special interest groups and Liberalists hired him to do - bring our Nation to its knees.

Obama doesn't even attempt to lead, but deliberately tries to destroy Our Nation and those of us who call ourselves citizens of the United States.

Don't know what day or when, but the day will come when America realizes that we have a very, very dangerous man in the White House.

There's no doubt, he should be removed from office along with Pelosi, Reid and some others, but accomplishing that isn't easy. In the meantime, if he passes the healthcare reform and continues spending, America will be in a "Depression."

For those who keep defending him - it's past time to look around and admit that everything Obama touches turns to ashes.

May God Bless Our Nation

I am surprised your editor agreed that this story was news. What's new? Is this a trend story? we all know by watching television that the GOP and Tea Bag Parties are attended by mostly white, middle aged men. In addition, I must have missed your margin of error for your poll. In most polls, the margin of error is +- 3 - 5 percent. In some of the cases you cite, that would result in single point drop.
So follow the horse race if you will; report on the sizzle, not the steak. And your readership, like the president's popularity, will continue to decline until something big happens to both of you.

...or, if you want to trace some of these attitudes backwards to the 60's ... the following quote is from Andrew Young (Atlanta) in 1970 (National Review, 18 Feb 1977, p. 194)...and then try and understand what the rest of us might be concerned about:

"...it may take the destruction of Western civilization to allow the rest of the world to really emerge as a free and brotherly society, and if the white West is incapable of brotherhood with colored peoples, then this small body of colored peoples, black people within the white West [White House?] may be the revolutionary vanguard that God has ordained to destroy the whole thing."

In the last presidential election, Barak Obama actually did worse than John Kerry in many white districts of the South. In other parts of the country, he did surprisingly well. So, it's no surprise that in more difficult times, the white and quite "frankly" , racist, opinion is being heard loud and clear in the white regions of the South. This sentiment is most noticeable but not restricted to the South. It has also been seen in the many white-only, tea baggers meetings across the land. At least the tea baggers are more open than they were in the past. They are no longer wearing their white robes and hoods.

Response to heridavidson: No, dear. "West" means Western countries and culture. Many years ago when I read DAYS OF OUR YEARS by Van Paassen, I concluded that it's nothing short of a miracle that there's a white man living on the face of the earth, given his treatment of blacks for time out of mind. Were there any kind of justice in the universe, this would not be the situation. Blacks who have survived and risen above their status in history have shown remarkable restraint in responding to their past and in forging cordial relationships with the White community as a whole. Obama is the first president since FDR to attempt putting true Christian principles into effect by giving succor to the less fortunate of every color and persuasion among us,thus attempting to stem the tide of such atrocities as the Bush tax cuts for the filthy rich and restore a viable and essential middle class to the American economy.

Seems to me you're trying to imply that because more Southern whites disapprove, it's because of racism. Got a news flash for you; despite the existence of some racism, race relations in the part of the South I came from were and are now far better than they are in the northern area in which I now live. You will never completely rid the world of racism, human nature being what it is. That said, everyone I know disapproves because of his policies, his agenda, the people he surrounds himself with, and so on. I don't care what color he is. All I ask is someone with the competence and capabilities needed to do the job. He has neither requirement.

There is nothing new with the outcome of the polls. As long as you have Americans who hates for reasons unknown to themselves, they will always disapprove of president Obama, who is black, but we tend to avoid that truth and lie to ourselves. They tend to ignore that he has demonstrated more sense of unselfishness than any president I've seen. It has been told many times, he didn't create the mess he inherited by taking office. And for those "Republicans" who have down played the stimulus monies in their state, yet benefit from it, you are the hendrance of all that is gone bad in the Whitehouse. Most of the job layoffs are deliberate to make Obama look bad, and we know it. But again, that's the "Satan" or hate in use. It applies to whoever it pertains to......

The information presented is incomplete. The numbers don't show approval ratings of blacks, hispanics and other non-whites. It critical to see if those poll numbers also declined or if they stayed the same.

Without that information, it's beneath the dignity of the Washington Post to imply that only whites disapprove of President Obama. The most charitable thing I can say is that it's an egregious error.

Is it so hard to believe that the country is becoming disenchanted with a President who is pursuing statist policies? Cap and trade, health care, massive deficit spending, sweet heart deals for the unions, are all examples of policies that have been rejected by the American people who don't want to depend on the government.

The President campaigned as a centrist but when elected, ran hard left hence the disapproval of the country.

We are now reliving the appeasement foreign policy strategies of Carter 40 years later.

Yeah I'm from Wisconsin and like some other comments I say let the South succeed. The Constitution says states can in fact succeed. Their phony patriotism is pitiful and the way they treat blacks and other minorities is absurd. They like to string people up down there; when is someone actually going follow the law and string them up for treason?!?

I believe its time for the American people to assume responsibility for where we are. This is our government, and these are the people we have chosen to represent us(and most times the same person over and over again). Then we sit back uninvolved in our government, living our comfortable lives, and digging ourselves into debt because we are such a materialistic country. Our government is a reflection of who we have become and once we recognize that, maybe we can have some real change. Wake up people! The change begins with you!!!!!

@twotimetuna - um, exactly where did you learn your mythical "history" of the GOP being the party of blacks? You are so far off topic as to be in another solar system.

@usmc1969 - Did you vote for Bush? How about his father? Ronald Reagan? They had as little (or as much, however you want to measure) experience as the current president. Will you kindly drop the ACORN crap? No one ever saw or paid any attention to ACORN until the last election, when suddenly it was the monstrously evil, left-wing behind-the-scenes, black helicopter Boogie Man that suddenly could control election outcomes. LMAO!!

@Coodeh - Agreed. I laugh when I'm told of the quality education their children are getting here. Of course, it almost always in private school "'cause the public schools are a mess because of the unions." An average FL 6th grader is at least a full year behind similar kids in WA, OR, NY, NJ schools. I'd be for national educational standards if I wasn't afraid that the South would dumb down the whole nation to their loose "standards."

@momsablogger - I agree. I live in the FL Panhandle where Bush was considered too liberal(!), so while there's a lot of "I'm not raciest" talk here, every time you ask someone to be specific about a complaint, they inevitably bring out a variation of the old "black welfare queen/lazy shiftless drug-dealing pimp" as an example. Never a white person; always a black (or "Mexican").

2. Joe Wilson shouted "You lie!" in front of the Congress and the Nation. Repubs should be ashamed!
3. Repubs have said from the beginning that they would defeat the health care bill so that it would be Pres.Obama's "waterloo." Repubs should be ashamed!
4. If you watch House or Senate floor actions, you will repeatedly see Repubs. use delaying tactics that really waste taxpayer dollars. Repubs should be ashamed.
5. When Pres.Bush was re-elected in 2004, the Repubs told unhappy Dems to "get over it." Now, with a Dem in the White House, the unhappy Repubs need to "get over it" and start working with Dems.
We really need to vote these Repubs out in 2010 for the greater good of the nation.

I'm sorry, but I just have to respond to RobertCurleyJacobs, who not only has obviously never been out of some backwoods shack in Wisconsin, but doesn't seem to know the difference between secede and succeed. I'm sure in his idiotic comments he didn't really mean he wanted to see the South succeed. And his thinking southerners "like to string people up" is ludicrous, and thinking such an act is "treason" further proves he doesn't know his backside from a hole in the ground. Get a life, guy.

The South continues to demonstrate its backwardness by electing conservatives. Despite the South now being the GOP base region, Obama actually carried three Southern states---Florida, North Carolina and Virginia, though he ran very poorly in much of the rest of the South. The states in the South Atlantic region were much closer than in the Inland South.

The Southern states not bordering the Atlantic Ocean all gave at least 55% of their vote to McCain, indicating that the South is indeed out of step with the rest of the nation. McCain got 46% of the vote nationally, but 55% + in every southern state that is not on the Atlantic Coast.

I wish we could see what would the economy be without the stimulus. People would be surprised.

Actually the stimulus should have been larger. I think the American people should be made aware how crumbling and unsafe our infrastructure is. As a structural engineer, I can tell only about structural issues, but our power distribution, roads, almost everything is in dangerous state. Borrowing money for something we desperately need, and will create value, would have helped the economy much more and we would be now getting out of recession. But there are ignorant politicians who look at their on interest and they want to act as a sand in the economic gear. The said part of it is that the American people "bought" their rhetoric. The only mistake the Obama administration did is not being forceful enough and watered down the program hoping for bipartisanship. It turned out a wrong approach.

Being a 'son of the south' for nearly 65 years and having many black friends and neighbors it is my opinion that folks such as Shingo66 and others with similar thoughts are just ignorant concerning who we are in the South. Most of us work in mixed race workplaces; most of us live in mixed race neighborhoods; many of us worship in mixed races churches and nearly all of us have a better knowledge of what is being done to our constitution than the average American outside of the south has a clue.

Having said all of this I would welcome a peaceful secession of the south from the Union as it appear to me that the upper East Coast, the West Coast and much of the upper upper mid west are more into hand outs and 'going on the government dole' than they are in getting out and earning an honest living and working for what they get rather than having the "wealth be spread around" as BHO would have us do. Indeed if the wealth is to be spread around lets do it the old fashion market way of those who work the hardest have a shot of reaping the rewards for their hard work.

May I offer a wager? Perhaps, with a single Confederate dollar bill?
President Obama will win a second term.

I do remember...
Nixon channeled the "silent majority" and in effect legitimized the white man's irrational fear of black folk.

Reagan spoke of "States Rights" in Philadelphia, Miss. Message received.

Bush Sr. had Lee Atwater show the scariest photo of a black convict (Willie Horton). Message received. All Dukakis' fault.

Bush Jr. had Rove massage the message expertly and instead of beating the same dead horse, fate brought him a present.... some pulverized Arabs (by their own hand)...the greatest boon to xenophobic chauvinism. Message: "We don't have to change.....it's all those darn A-rabs or "Islamics" or whatever you call them from over 'there' ".

But, tough guys, with all the ridicule and orneriness, President Obama is playing this classy while third-raters like DeMint, McConnell and numerous other Senate Republicans (and the grinning congressman who occupies and shames Madison's seat) are acting like mouthy brats while they line their campaign pockets with Insurance Industry largesse. For Shame.

If we collectively don't smell the coffee about health care, the country will financially be in deep ----.
Even the dumbest supremacist will then learn (at some hazy level) he was dead wrong. For sure the electorate will. Come 2012, Obama will win again.
Hold on to that Reb $1 bill.
Stop quoting polls from a population made illiterate by TV and Hannity's posturing. Limbaugh's braying and Sarah's little jumbled words.

I cannot quote you a poll from the Confederacy on Abe Lincoln but I bet Jeff Davis would be 40 or 50 points ahead in such a poll! Did that make him a winner?

The enemy is us!

The entire GOP machine has decided to systematically sabotage every one of his proposals. Nothing can get through the senate because the 40-41% minority is making unprecedented use of the filibuster threat (something they claimed to be philosophically against when it threatened to be used against them, in the matter of judge confirmation). This president has 40% of government using every tool at their disposal to make sure he fails, simply out of being p!$$#d off that he won. Is it any wonder that people think his policies are "not working"?

Mel Brooks had it right in "Blazing Saddles." To paraphrase a movie critic whose name escapes me, put a black man in charge and some people go crazy.

Almost every person I know who voted for Obama has buyer's remorse. They were fooled into believing his campaign rhetoric instead of looking at his radical past. But they learned, and we can now go on to defeat him and his leftist agenda. It's not good for America. It's not good for the western world. Where would they be if they had to depend on themselves for protection against this Islamic scourge? Every democracy should pray that Obama is defeated in 2012, or we will become as defenseless and impoverished as so many European and other countries around the world. I live in the south. Surprisingly, many minorities now see his arrogance and his inability to govern.

First Obama doesn't claim to be a Christian and unfortunately you don't know what one is. Given the economy of Oregon, it doesn't appear he done you any favors ... open your window and look outside.

As far as the South being stupid, just how many degrees do you have? I have THREE.

Here in Texas we also have some of the best medical schools and people come from all over the world to get treatment. What does that say for the North?

Most of us would just as soon leave you all to your misery .. we also have most of the oil. You can barely get wood for your wood stoves/or fireplaces ... because your worried about a 'spotted owl'. Damn good decsion, wiped out half of your economy, didn't it. Or do you pay attention to those minor detials?

How is you all's socialist medicine working out lately? Sucks doesn't it. We studied it back in the early 90's, and seen it sucked back then ... yes, we can read here in Texas.

We also recognize STUPID, when we see it.

You can keep your socialism, and we will keep our freedom.

To everyone who claims Obama is far left radical I ask you to please show me the radical nature of his policies thus far. Far left anything left? Would someone as far left as Obama suggest a tax credit to create jobs? (Obama did!) To those who point to the health care plan I can link you to articles that explain that this plan is very similar to the moderate plan from the '90s. At times fool hardy, not willing to push and do the right thing, but the more popular thing, yes. But radical? No! you are merely repeating media talking points with out any evidence.

Spare me! Your own figures do not support singling out the South for Obama's disapproval ratings. Check out the Midwest where he is equally if not more on the decline. In fact, his net overall negatives are about the same nationwide. Please stop trotting out the race card to rationalize the incompetence of the Obama administration - and that is really what your headline is about.

Posted by: vh1422 | March 2, 2010 5:15 PM | Report abuse

I am from the Midwest. I am not a racist. I do however, strongly disapprove of this President's policies as do a majority of my fellow Mid-westerners and it has nothing to do with the color of his skin.

Maybe you don't get it (like the Administration), but we are in real financial trouble. Although he and the Congress pay some lip service to the problem, they don't want to address it because they think they derive power from spending. In reality they lack either the intelligence or political will to get this country back on strong financial footing.

Just one example is the proposed massive health care bill(s) at an astronomical cost no one can reasonably estimate. If you truly believe the health care bill(s) they are proposing will help solidify our country's financial well being then I have a bridge over the Potomac to sell you. Until the folks inside the Beltway grasp the fact that the government run entitlement programs and redistribution of wealth are the problem and not the solution we are in for financial ruin. We can't even fix the ones we have, much less start a new one. Whatever happened to personal responsibility?

What I am sick of is the media playing the race card when negative rating information comes out on the President - it has nothing to do with race and everything to do with the President's policies and ineffectiveness.

You can not explain away the NJ, Mass, and Virginia results by labeling everyone racist. We strongly disapproved of the Republicans free spending and deficits only to quadruple the deficit. Anyone who really believes that sending more money and power to Washington will solve any problem let alone "fix" health care is either fooling themselves or truly ignorant of every large federal program ever enacted. The idea that they will insure another 10 to 30 million people for free is laughable at best and criminal at worst. The only thing man made global warning has not been blamed for is the health care crisis. As Thatcher said so well, "the problem with socialism is sooner or later you run out of other people's money." Washington, we are broke and profligate spending won't fix it.

Posted by: billunderhill | March 2, 2010 5:43 PM | Report abuse

The naysayers on this health care bill scream about cost -- "$900 billion will bankrupt the country."

Well, first off its $900 billion over 10 years, so that averages $90 billion per year. The US annual Defense budget was over $600 billion for the current fiscal year and exceeds $700 billion for the next.

The Iraqi and Afghanistan wars consumed at least $100 billion in direct costs per year, yet we had 2 tax cuts to "pay" for the wars.

Our annual baseline defense budget (which does not include the war costs mentioned above) exceeds the sum of the next 52 countries defense budget COMBINED. Annually we spend more than Russia, China, all of Western Europe, Japan and all of the Middle Eastern countries -- COMBINED, EACH AND EVERY YEAR.

Talk about math challenged . . .

I find it fascinating that Obama still gets the "far left" tag when his policies are clearly centrist. Is this code for something? For those of you that criticize Obama for attacking healthcare, I ask you how would you try to get control of a sector in which 1/6 of the nations resources are currently devoted? And that same sector is growing at double digit rates and presents a cost that our competitors currently subsidize or outright pay for out of the public trough.

For those of you that criticize his handling of the economy, what's your presciption? Let me let you in on something. Many of the jobs that were shed during this last debacle aren't coming back. Sorry. A lot of corps use this recession as an excuse to eliminate or outsource costs. And that means that our economy has create new jobs. So unless you got another tech revolution or something similar, its going to be long slog back. That's not Obama's fault and there's not much he or anybody else can do about it.

So much of the vitriol that I read here suggest that Obama's not smart enought to do the job. Yet all the Republicans can talk about is tax cuts which exacerbate the problem by making an already untenable wealth distribution problem worse. They countenance "wars on drugs" that can't be won and support "wars" on terror that don't make sense (since when can you declare war on a tactic). There's billions of "stupid" dollars being spent but some of you would make Obama the new "Lennin" if he went after them. So he's stuck doing a few things that might make a difference that he can garner sufficient support for. Welcome to America.

I am a CT native with some deep familial ties to the South. The South suffered, arguably, well-deserved losses during the Civil War and long afterward. Except for the American Revolution, northerners never experienced anything like the wide-spread devastation of their homes and personal lives that the South endured for decades after that war. They paid the price big time with carpetbaggers and more humilitation at every turn. Is it any surprise that there are still lingering hostilities a few generations later? Maybe had Lincoln lived, there would have been a better reconcillation. Posters here who turn on their southern brothers are not being thoughtful. The Civil War was more about political leverage in the national legislature than it was about the noble and absolutely correct abolition of slavery. Had the leaders at that time been more thoughtful instead of so politically charged, we may have avoided the carnage that ensued and the fallout we still struggle with today.

Not only are our dear old president's approval ratings dropping across the board, but he has failed to do anything positive for our country. A person's words and ideas can only take us so far, and as wonderful as it is that President Obama can read a script with eloquence, it does not help us in any way, shape, or form. WAKE UP AMERICA! He doesn't know what he is doing, and he has made that quite clear himself. It is a sad day when one's own party fails to support their leader, so is a shock that the republican south is smart enough to speak up? Come November, we need a real president, because I have sure as hell had enough of these "change" shenanigans.

Black v White....in the South.

Just watched a movie "A Time To Kill" ref Grisham. Based in the 80's fictional and tab fanciful outcome.

I've been reading and listening to historical data on the politics of the so-called deep south.

The issue of "slavery" which "many" colonists enjoyed during the 18/19 century was undermined by the British, yes, those that the continental army/volunteers defeated in the 18th century. It was the British that manned anti slavery ships on the west coast of Africa to slow the flow of disenfranchised native people. The slow down met with anger but then the realisation that we better look after "our property" i.e. health! Interesting that this very day the biggest fight by the US government is "health reform" and "jobs"!
On the latter issue of "jobs" the southern whites are not getting the benefits of the previous POTUS i.e. transferring businesses with government incentives "dollars" to sure up "the deep south"!

So don't get so "proud" of your Lincoln; he was also a slave owner! Many take the high moral ground later in life, it's a money back guarantee for the "highway to heaven" even if just subconscious! I believe we over-rate our public officials and love to call people "great"!

If people are not willing to attain knowledge then we are all doomed to disaster! Wars, where old "wise men" send young "many" near unemployable, in a very competitive market place to their premature deaths in the name of "democracy" this is but a word and doesn't describe the USA, a republic yes! Government especially GOP have for decades made it very difficult for many people to actually have a vote! The antics the previous Bush administration put in the way of ordinary people to get a vote was reminiscent of Hitler/Taliban etc. This doesn't take into account the actual "vote" those that got past the obstacles and then had their intentions lost or court appealed in GOP strong holds in the in state of Florida, no sir this is no democracy!

So, for many in the south they are now the "slaves" filled with hatred for another humans; colour of the skin! They may feel betrayed by other "whites" "liberals" for taking away what they seen as "pets" and no cost labour!
Why do many in the world see this region as "genetically inferior" because many of these folk are of colour and glad not to be "white"! Many live in abject poverty but still scale far superior to southern morality!

White Male chasing 60!

I get it. All the white guys who voted for Obama, without whom he could not have been elected, have suddenly turned racist as a result of a Republican conspiracy. It has nothing to do with the left wing idealogy of this incompetent administration.

This is a pretty good summary of why the country is stirred up.

MA,VA,NJ AND EVERY POLL OF THE VOTERS SAYS NO TO HEALTH CARE REFORM AS PRESENTLY CONSTITUTED:
Trillions of dollars in added deficit spending.
Trillions of dollars in unfunded Federal mandates for the states.
$100 trillion plus in unfunded Medicare liabilities, unfunded Social Security liabilities, National Debt and future debt from bills already enacted by Congress.

Fatal flaws beyond unfunded state mandates & deficit spending in the Medicare Reform Act (Senate or House Version):
Medicare access for ALL foreigners (40 + million) in the USA legal or illegal (defacto with no verification enforcement) without corresponding access for Americans abroad AND NO MEDICARE ACCESS FOR AMERICANS ABROAD LET ALONE THE DENIAL OF COVERAGE FOR AMERICANS PRESENTLY ENROLLED IN MEDICARE FOR VARIOUS TREATMENTS AND DRUGS NOT COVERED.
Political payoffs for unions built into the bill (SEI in particular).
No legal liabilities for any medical person or institution EXCEPT doctors for errors, omissions or incompetence. 20% lower reimbursement rates for doctors. A current growth rate in numbers of practicing doctors of 1% AND WE EXPECT THEM TO HANDLE AN INCREASE IN PATIENT LOAD OF 10-15%!

Couple all of the above with 20% unemployment and underemployment and the higher taxes represented by the above and you expect the voters to have amnesia when they cast their ballots.

LOL ON REELECTION IN NOVEMBER CONGRESS.

You wouldn't know a "left winger" if you fell over one!

Incompetent?

Is your name is Robert van Winkle?

Global Financial disaster!

What % of white males in the "deep south" actually voted for Obama? Or just didn't vote, what was the "informal vote"? How many registered GOP (male) voters didn't vote?
It was the election GOP had to lose!

They left the "mess" to any new government.

Obviously, not one of the "grunts" sent into harms way? Or who has "health insurance issues"? Don't find it difficult to secure good employment...didn't think so! To be on effected by the above and vote GOP....what can anybody say?

No conspiracy, just business as usual in the US of A!

Posted by: porpie9254 | March 2, 2010 8:25 PM | Report abuse

PRRWRITER,

That sure spells disaster; an informative read, thank you!

You have 40mil illegals and visitors that receive medical attention without payment?
Many "illegals" work very cheap and your government do nothing i.e. status in the US?

The US is legally "insolvent"?

Isn't it time for the "patriotic" those with real wealth to "dig deep"?

What % of the US is now foreign owned?

What % of the US work force are actually in unions? In Australia it is currently 18% over 50% are government workers!

Are you saying that medical practitioners are "much worse off" financially? MD's are still the domain of the wealthy....students debts are an impasse for bright "poorer kids"?

We have a number of US trained MD's here in Australia.

My comment is directed at BROOKLYNBORN1 who made comments regarding his view of President Obama. Your spelling is suspect and your inane observation as to the performance of our President is not worth my time, but your commentary regarding race is shameful. I live in New Mexico where all ethnic groups get along pretty well. I do however, support your right to make a fool of your self.

Hey, whoa there, all of you. I was born, bred, and live in South Carolina. All of us who live here are NOT ignorant, racist and still fighting the Civil War, and certainly not all of us are right wing ideologues either. I can well assure you all that I support President Obama and the job he is doing, and believe me, I am embarrassed by the antics of Mark Sanford, Joe Wilson, Andre Bauer, and Jim De Mint. I neither voted for or support these fools, and resent the implication they represent my views and values. So, dear readers, please realize there are plenty of us of like mind here who choose to stay and fight the good fight for our belief that change will indeed come.

It's all about race. Always has been.

Southern whites have found a "straw dog" in the Tea Parties that covers overt racism. Didn't hear a peep outta' them when Bush et al spent trillions of $$$$$ to take us to war. Now the South doesn't approve of this President because he's trying to give us affordable, inclusive health care, get us back to work, redo the public educ. system, find commonality with enemies (that would be the Congressional Republicans), put in place financial safeguards and more than 200+ actions approved by the house, sent to the Senate and stopped by bull-headed, Southern & mid-Western brain burps.

Still caught up in opposing ANYTHING if Black people are for it, only fools vote against their own best interests. This would be Southern whites. Bless their lil' hearts!##

Some people seem to think that the American economy can be rebuilt in a single year. Not so. And the rebuilding must involve all sectors of society and all political parties - not just one president and his political party. Not just the government but the citizenry as well.

This is the time for the Republicans to rise above partisan politics and throw in their cooperation for the good of their nation. Loyalty to the party must take a backseat when loyalty to the welfare of the American people is at stake.

God bless the United States of America, the greatest democracy the world has ever know! God bless the people of the Stars and Stripes!

The present system of blogging, which does not require the blogger to give his true name, hides the same under the protective mantle of anonimity. It is certain that much of the mud thrown at the faces of public figures would be minimized, if not altogether eliminated, if the blogger's true name were required to be included in the blog box.

The mechanical blocker of objectionable words built into the system does not work because the practitioners of mud-throwing use raw idiomatic phrases which the mechanical blocker cannot recognize. - Carmencita H. Acosta - Journalist & Textbook Writer

Well, as one whose family has lived in the South since the 17th century, I'm not surprised Mr. Obama's numbers are sinking here.

Generally, Southerners don't care much for Marxists, or even neo-marxists. And that probably explains his increasing popularity. People know Obama better now.

Let's stop the Republicans from selling themselves as fiscal conservatves. The most expensive spending program in history is the "Bush tax cuts". In their relentless persuit of campaign contributions, they spent $1.8 trillion to bribe rich Americans by cutting their taxes so that they would make large contributions to their 2004 campaign.

If Obama has three years left in his term as President, why is he trying to jam Health Care down the throats of the American people, who don;t even want the bill in his first year in office? If most of the population does not want the bill,he has to know it is a very bad one. We need health care reform but not in the underhanded way it is being presented i the Obama administration.

How about that? With homes and businesses in the south turned to Fox's news, what can you expect? The main-stream media and many of its 'pundits'join in. At the bottom of this and I am going to say all these words to keep from saying that hated word "racism". Too many whites don't like and some hate blacks. Then I am going to tell you about Nixon's 1968 strategy, built on racism has played a central a role in American politics since he realized he could advance Republicans' fortunes by appealing to the racial fears of working-class whites.
Capitalizing on white resentment, Republican conservatives seized the initiative to launch a majoar legislative and legal assault calculated to nullify or reverse gains of blacks, arguing that black progress was achieved by infringing on the rights of whites. Nothing epitomized this assault on black progress more than the rhetoric and policy initiatives of white-America's most beloved President, Ronald Reagan. It was Reagan who skillfully injected terms like "black racism" and "reverse discrimination" in the political discourse.
Racism in America is spoken obliquely through cultural words. The Republicans have appealed to conservative values and used cultural issues such as gay marriage, abortion and religion to mobilize their base. Now, they speak in couched terms of "wanting my country back". Hell! No! They don't want a black president and now that he is President they want him to fail and you can throw in a few Democrats to help them out, if you're honest.

I am 71, white, grew up in Detroit. one of the most racially divisive cities in the country, lived in Virginia for 28 years, am married to a white girl from Mississippi and have lots of relatives still living there. In the south the N word is still used by many, including some who believe themselves liberal, to show their independence from the rest of the nation in many things. But it comes down to race. Scratch the surface of many native white southerners and you find a deep well of disgust about being governed by a black. I often hear great praise for black athletes, actors, writers, from white southerners but open hostility when black holders of public office -- at any level -- are discussed. And the news media (Post included) goes out of its way to deflect attention to side issues to avoid tackling this issue head on.

You Go Thelma1!!! I agree with you. They want President Obama to fail so bad, until its ridiculous. One commentor said that Obama has failed and that he's lied. Failed and lied where and about what? I'm willing to bet she couldn't tell you. Unless they're mimicking Fox and Friends. And we know how they operate! And oh, the polls that always conveniently show up, are so bogus! Who and where do they come from. Where can I sign up?I have yet to be asked what I think about anything. Another thing, a lot of you have very short memories. It took years to get our country in the state its in, thanks to G.W. Bush and his Administration. Mind you, Obama did not create the mess but you would've thought he did. I'm sick of all the convenient memory lapses. And another thing, a lot of you can pretend to be blind, deaf and dumber but we who support Obama can see and hear well. The Republicans are to blame, with a few Democrats, for why we are not progressing like we should. It should've never taken this long to come to a decision about the health and welfare of the American people. We all see whose to blame, but as usual, the blame always fall on Obama. If we don't come together as American people, then all of us fail! Look at our country! I am appalled at what is going on. It seems that the gloves came off when Obama became President. We need GOD in our lives more than ever!

"FEED ME or GIVE ME JOB" pure communism in action. Government takes over and responsible for everything. No personal responsibility. If a man rapes a child it is not his fault, it was the society's fault and Govt should 'treat' him! If I do not have a job Govt should feed me, cloth me and shelter me and give me health care! If I buy a house which I can not afford, Government should forgive my loan or blame the Bank for giving loan to you. If I did not save for my son's education, Government should pay my son's college fees. Where is this country heading...White house is full of Communists and Obama acts like one!

Y'all read this, every word, Mississippi professor in exile in NY:
Hmmm, Let's see beyond the venting:
1. Obama saved at least 3 million jobs with his stimulus: mostly teachers, firefighters, police: they are out spending money,
2. Obama inherited 3 trillion in accumulated deficits from Bush II- by high-end tax cuts + 1 trillion for the very successful Iraq War (not even on the books just as the coffins at Dover were censored)
3. Obama has set free market, crash and burn economics back with a dash of Keynes
4. Obama has not played to the polls, will accept 1 term, does the right thing and infuriates his opponents because he is so damned good,
5. 40% of the electorate are dead from the neck up and 80% of those live in Red States
6. The Republicans have been bought and paid for by the Rupert Murdoch’s and Roger Ailes's and their mouthpieces
7. The tea party kids and far right clowns following Messrs. Beck and Limbaugh are to be empathized with: they are in their death throes: look at the demographics: the Millenials, hispanics, blacks, sane whites
8. Obama has regained the respect of almost every country on the planet, a definite negative for Beck-Palin-McCain-Romney.
9. Of course everyone wants a healthcare bill tailored to their needs-- so an ambitious one is going to cause grumpiness: sort of like ending slavery, establishing social security (socialism in 1936), and medicare (single payer).
10. A few smart Republicans (no, not an oxymoron even today) like Lindsay Graham and Christie Whitman are already beginning to mourn the death of their brand, they see their colleagues approaching delirium and that even the "pair-less" media will get trampled in the new rush: they had moments of lucidity in 2008 and early 2009.

I went back and doubled checked this is not to biased they have poll numbers on WHITES but not blacks and other races? I know this newspaper won't beleive this but BLACKS do vote and they are also unhappy with Obama and it's NOT because he didn't pass health care it's because of his spending.. remember blacks also work and some actually make enough money to see the big taxes coming their way..How racist..

Democrats lost the South when Lyndon Johnson passed the civil rights bill. They were quick to forget that he gave them the REA and numerous programs which they value to this day. Race was and remains consuming for many - not all - despite progress. I include Texas although we also have a large, more literate, less racist population and we are nearly democratic.

Progress was made a long time ago on race, Obama is just an awful President plain and simple. No amount of racially tinged polls distributed and initiated by the WAPO will change that.
