The president's ratings on Afghanistan

With Barack Obama making his first trip to Afghanistan as president, a Washington Post poll finds the issue to be one of his strongest. It stands as the only issue tested on which his handling merits majority approval and more strong approval than disapproval.

Afghanistan is also an issue where the president is buoyed by cross-party support, but dragged somewhat by less enthusiastic support in his base.

Overall, 53 percent of those polled approve of the way Obama is dealing with the situation in Afghanistan; 35 percent disapprove. Among independents, exactly half give the president positive marks, and 35 percent negative. In contrast, Obama's approval rating on four big domestic issues in the poll sits below 50-percent both generally and among independents.

Afghanistan has long been a bright spot for the president in terms of public opinion, in part because Republicans give him more positive marks here than on any domestic issue. In the new poll, 37 percent of Republicans approve of Obama's management of the conflict there, more than doubling his overall 17 percent job approval rating among the group.

Democrats broadly approve - 69 percent approve to 21 percent disapprove - though that overall positive masks far higher ratings among conservative and moderate Democrats (75 percent approve) than among liberals (58 percent).

Separately, the public places greater trust in Democrats than Republicans to manage the situation in Afghanistan, 43 percent to 33 percent, though that is largely a matter of partisan preference. Independents split evenly between the two parties, with 32 percent saying they trust each and one in five favoring neither party.

Americans give a narrow edge to Republicans on handling the U.S. campaign against terrorism (43 percent trust Republicans more, 37 percent Democrats).

Afghan occupation (aka War) shows how right-wing Dems are and what utter lunatics Repukes are to be to the right of the Dems.

END this Afghan occupation, this total waste of our money and lives, set aside daily slaughter of Afgan people. I mean we are told we are in Afghanistan because of threat of Taliban/Alqaeda. Give us a break. what threat!!!!

I mean to see what a pathetic of a nothing of nothing threat (Army) Taliban (or Alqaeda) is consider the FACTS::

How many Tanks does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Fighter Planes does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Ships does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Missiles does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Helicopters does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Submarines does Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Naval basis does Taliban or Alqaeda have? ZERO.
How many Air Force basis does Taliban or Alqaeda have? ZERO.
etc. etc. ZEROS are the arsenal (the threat) from Taliban or Alqaeda.
Indicating that the fear we need to have from Alqaeda should in fact be near ZERO.

I mean is Alqaeda a threat, sure it is but this threat is not even as big as IRA was to UK and you did not see UK go crazy and start bombing Ireland in a so called "War on (IRA) Terror" act which would have in fact created many more recruits for IRA, you did not see UK start saying such non-sense as "Catholic Terrorism.." "Catholic Terrorists..", or invade a Catholic country in central America which is equivalent of US invading Iraq. And finally how UK got rid off IRA was to seat down and negotiate with it and address its grievances. And equally importantly this did not stop UK from providing its people with Universal Nationalized Health Care and many other Social services.

Realist20 LIES about Obama, and proves that his name is ironic. There is no "reality" to his comments.

1. Obama is not "hated by the electorate" and THIS VERY PAGE PROVES IT! "Overall job" for "All Adults" is above 50%. Therefore, the majority of "the electorate" APPROVES of Obama. The small minority of the electorate who "hate" Obama are mostly a provably ignorant subset of the Republican Party. Evidence: 24% of Republicans are so STUPID they think Obama may be the Anti-Christ. Wow! That's some extra-strength ignorance, right "realist20"?

2. Obama has gone FAR beyond the Cheney-Bush policy in Afghanistan.

For one thing, Obama is not diverting forces away from the REAL war in Afghanistan to a BOGUS war in Iraq.

For another thing, Obama is not HOLDING BACK TROOPS WHO KNOW WHERE BIN LADEN IS, the way Cheney-Bush-Rumsfeld did, right realist20?

Obama is tougher on the Afghanistan terrorists than Cheney-Bush. Obama is actually wiping out Al Qaeda, which Cheney-Bush FAILED to do. Remember, after wiping out the Taliban, Cheney-Bush allowed the terrorists to flourish again in Afghanistan. Right, realist20?

http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2010/02/obama-tougher-on-al-qaeda-than-bush.html

3. The Cheney-Bush domestic agenda CRASHED THE US ECONOMY! Did you forget? Obama is fixing the mess Cheney-Bush made.

Realist20 is 0 for 3. Three assertions, three FAILS!

Obama's advantage is temporary. I read twice as many American soldiers are being killed now than last year. I doubt this war is going to end soon. Changing tactics will not change the outcome. The Afghans will be invincible as always. It is insanity trying to civilize those people. We are not as civilized as we think we are. Materialism is not civilization. Many others will conclude the same in a short while. Mr. Obama is wasting billions while so many are suffering right here. He has converted this country into a welfare state with borrowed money. If he is smart he should retrench and not explode like he is doing with American lives and resources. I voted this guy thinking he is different. He is not.

Obama is engaged in another stupid drug war - the war on poppies in Afghanistan. According to Applebaum in Slate:

Afghanistan's opium exports account for somewhere between two-thirds and one-third of the country's GDP, depending on whether you believe the United Nations or the United States. The biggest producers are in the southern provinces where the Taliban is at its strongest. Every time a poppy field is destroyed, a poor person becomes poorer.

Once again, Obama is a nightmare for the environment. He wants to poison all the poppy fields. The State Department has requested a $750 million for an Afghanistan counter-narcotics program that is expected to be granted. An estimated $152 million of that aid is expected to be spent on the aerial poppy eradication program.

We don't need another drug war. We need to get out of Afghanistan. We need to legalize drugs.

The presence of Washington's main man in Afghanistan will boost the status of Karzai`s government. They will now have an influential friend and longtime partner in the war against anarchy. Dissidents must now give up opium driven fantasies of power and come out of their caves. They must accept a small slice of the American pie before only the crumbs are left over.

Make no mistake - the only reason Obama is in Afghanistan is to take the focus off of Health Care and the fact that he, Pelosi and Reid rammed through a bill that 80% of the country did not want. His approval ratings are below 50% - and he's using them for a political photo op. Up until now, he didn't 'need' them.

I don't think it's a coincidence that his policies that people approve of are a continuation of the previous approach to Afghanistan.

It's no coincidence that this is much easier than when he has a progressive base he is trying to appease; that pandering to the progressive base has been what has gotten him into such hot water.

When he takes a more conservative approach, magically he gets higher approval ratings.

tjohn1 is breathtakingly WRONG in his ignorant attack on Obama.

1. tjohn1 says "I read twice as many American soldiers are being killed now than last year."

Due to the FAILURE of Cheney-Bush, last year there were way too few troops to be effective and they were not going into the areas they needed to go. So more casualties are inevitable to get the job done.

Why were there too few troops? Because Cheney-Bush diverted the war on terror from the real threat to US civilians (bin Laden/Taliban) and into a non-threat to US civilians (Iraq). Right, tjohn1?

Evidence: "We've got a massive influx of troops, we have troops going into areas where they have not previously been and you have a reaction by an enemy to a new force presence," said NATO spokesman Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale.

http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5ihcYrdxHyEs5g09fIPeMNJh0b6mQD9END6400

2. tjohn1: "Changing tactics will not change the outcome."

WRONG! Obama has ALREADY changed the outcome by wiping out FAR MORE TERRORISTS than Cheney-Bush in comparable periods. Cheney-Bush let bin Laden get away and let the terrorists set up camp again in Afghanistan. Obama is getting rid of them.

3. tjohn1 "It is insanity trying to civilize those people."

Who? The tea-partiers? You could be right...

4. tjohn1 "Mr. Obama is wasting billions while so many are suffering right here."

Uh, did you miss the epic passage of the greatest reform of health care in history? Thirty million will finally be able to STOP suffering.

5. tjohn1 "He has converted this country into a welfare state with borrowed money."

Uh, did you miss that this county was converted to a welfare state long ago? Did you miss that the worst money borrowing was under the likes of Reagan (tripled the deficit) and Bush (worst deficit death spiral in history)?

Look at how GREAT Democrats are on the deficit and what a DISASTER Republicans are, right, tjohn1?:

http://www.eriposte.com/economy/indicators/bush_deficit_graphic.gif

PROOF that Democrats are much better on reducing the deficit than Republicans.

Now that's CHANGE WE CAN BELIEVE IN!

kblit's attack on Obama is provably WRONG!

kblit: "His last two picks for DHS were both crooks"

WRONG! Prove either was a crook.

You can't. While you are FAILING to do that, you can school yourself. To prove you are not even right about "serious ethics issues," take a look at Bush's RECORD number of resignations for "serious ethics" issues" (below) and tell us how Obama's picks compare.

http://thedcshuffle.com/2009/02/11/complete-bush-appointee-resignation-scorecard/

Absolute manure that President Obama is following "the conservative approach" in Afghanistan. The conservative administration diddles away with 1/4 the manpower and a tiny fraction of the material to do this job. They did this because conservatives were far more interested in illegal wars for oil and fantasies about democracy domino theories than attacking and killing the terrorist cartel that attacked the United states. BECAUSE conservatives dropped the ball so thoroughly for so long we now have a real struggle. If bus had done the Obama approach, or really any sane approach, in 2002 we would not be in Afghanistan at all except as business partners at this point. bin ladel would be dead, and quaeda would be a memory. Remember the historical fact that even among Muslims who hated the US 9/11 was generally viewed as a horrific and cowardly act and it really tanked qaeda's popularity. It was the bush bungling and the Iraqnam war complete with torture, abu Graihb, and Gitmo coupled withleaving qaeda to its own devices for half a decade that brought them back to life.

So no, Presidnet Obamais not foloowing "conservative" ideas. He is acting like a sane sensible visionary leader of the worlds greatest nation. Not like some chimp pimping for oil companies and arms dealers.

The misleadingly-named "Ombudsman1" attempts to LIE with this gem:

"I don't think it's a coincidence that his policies that people approve of are a continuation of the previous approach to Afghanistan."

WRONG! The Obama polices that people approve of are the exact OPPOSITE of Cheney-Bush-McCain.

1. Obama is getting us out the the Cheney-Bush failure that was the decision to invade Iraq (which never attacked US soil) and put the troops into Afghanistan. Do you see the CHANGE Ombudsman1?

2. Bush had way too few troops to be effective and they were not going into the areas they needed to go. Obama fixed that, even though it meant disappointing the left and much of his own political base.

The bogus-named Ombudsman1 says: "It's no coincidence that this is much easier than when he has a progressive base he is trying to appease;"

Did you miss the fact that Obama DID choose to disappoint his progressive base by adding troops to Afghanistan? Obama took on his base because it was the right thing to do. That's called leadership. Statesmanship. Strength.

That's what the Republicans lack, right, Ombudsman1? Most Republicans can't even take on the VIOLENT members of their tea-party fringe, let alone their entire base, right, Ombudsman1?

Ombudsman1 continues to lie: "When he takes a more conservative approach, magically he gets higher approval ratings."

Prove it.

First of all, more troops in Afghanistan is NOT a "conservative approach." The "conservative approach" is to divert essential troops from Afghanistan (when they were about to get Bin Laden!) The Cheney-Bush conservative crowd let the terrorists take over Afghanistan again. Obama reversed those "conservative approaches" and is doing better against the resurgent Taliban than Cheney-Bush did.

Facts beat Ombudsman1 again!

HOPE AND CHANGE!

Interesting, you say that as you type on your computer using readily available electricity and uncensored bandwidth on a free web site that allows any opinion by anyone 365x24.

The war in Afghanistan is being fought to preserve our way of life that you recklessly and obliviously take for granted in your blinder constrained version of our world. It is under fire on two fronts, from fundamental terrorists who are based in that region and also we are an oil dependent country so preventing further economic turmoil requires stability in that middle east, regardless if we like or not or which administration caused this mess. Our policies aren't perfect, we've made mistakes, but I speak the truth -- and we were attacked on our homeland plus our way of life is in direct threat. Thus, the theatre of war known as the Afghan front is part of the so called "Global War on Terrorism" and fully justified. I don't feel the same about Iraq, we need to get out of there - it's the Hawkish philosophy gone haywire and has contributed partly to our economic mess at home. Obama knows this and has a timeline for slow withdawl, so he's been quite competent in handling that theatre as well, my .02.

Mr.President, please explain to us simple people of the U.S. how the war in Afghanistan will protect us from homeland attacks by Islam terrorist such as the 9/11 NY and attempted attacks since then including the Ft.Hood massacre, plus bin Laden of al-Quaeda's recent threats to kill captured U.S. troops?

It seem the U.S. is making a huge investment in Afghanistan at the sacrifice of U.S. troops killed and injured and billions of U.S. tax dollars going to Afghanistan every month. U.S. troops are fighting the Taliban and what do you hope to accomplish?

Obama’s objective must be to defeat the Taliban insurgents. Are you having trouble identifying the enemy of the U.S.? Do you think Afghanistan will be pro U.S.?

It's harder to see now, which regime, the USA or Afghanistan is the most autocratic and non-responsive and authoritarian against the wishes of its own people.

How the worm has turned! Obummer now needs KARZAI in an attempt to boost ratings in the U.S.

We will lose Afghanistan eventually. We are not fighting only the Talibans and Al-Qaiada but the more important millions of multinational islamic fanatics with unlimited supply from all over the world assembling now in the safe havens of Pakistan after being wiped out by our US troops in Iraq.Remember how the 150,000 Russian troops were defeated in Afghanistan. These worldwide multinational islamic terrorists will eventually reach overwhelming numbers and easily defeat our US troops. The only solution is to make the safe havens in Pakistan and all islamic fanatic extremist nations or regions radioactive for thousands of years to make them unhabitable hoping they will become extinct. We can warn the islamic civlians to leave before bombing but they would prefer to stay and die for martyrdom to go to heaven with Allah and 70 virgens. Time is on their side and they have been relentless for a thousand year.

LarryG62 appears to have all the fact tea-bagged out of him.

LarryG62 hatefully spewed: "Odumbo's polls must have indicated he need to do some more pandering for the military. Thet's the only reason this slug would head over there."

Obama has better polling than Bush.

http://theplumline.whorunsgov.com/terrorism/poll-obama-doing-better-job-than-bush-on-national-security-and-terror/

Therefore do Republicans also only travel to war zones when their polls are low? Looks like you forgot to add that.

LarryG62 (where are MoeG62 and CurlyG62?) fails to provide a shred of evidence for this: "For him to chastize the Afghanis about corruption is the height of hypocrisy, given the abject state of corruption in Odumbo's party."

Prove it. Where is your evidence?

And when you come up with any, let's compare alleged Democratic party corruption to this:

http://thedcshuffle.com/2009/02/11/complete-bush-appointee-resignation-scorecard/

"Forty-two Bush Administration appointees resigned under a cloud of controversy over the past eight years. Only now could a final tally be calculated. So many had resigned that it actually has become difficult to remember every one of them. Some were well illuminated by the mainstream media while others were just a passing blip on the political radar."

Read the massive Republican corruption in just one administration, not counting the likes of Vitter, DeLay, Randy "Duke" Cunningham, Ensign, etc.

LarryG62, are you one of the staggeringly huge 24% of Republicans who are so stupid they think Obama might be the Anti-Christ?

michel1835 lies: "all the policies used in Afghanistan were tested in Iraq by the Bush administration... libs just come in fresh and clean , with a lot of rhetoric , but no new and original ideas or solutions"

WRONG! Cheney-Bush pulled the troops out of the nation that harbored Al-Qaeda (Afghanistan) and put the troops in a nation that NEVER harbored Al Qaeda and actively hated them (Iraq). Obama is trying the "don't be stupid like that" policy, which Cheney-Bush never tried. New, original solution!

Cheney-Bush tried the policy of "don't let the allied troops go get Bin Laden WHEN THEY KNOW WHERE HE IS HIDING!" Right? Obama is trying the "don't be stupid like that" policy, which Cheney-Bush never tried. New, original solution!

Cheney-Bush kept the tiny force left over in Afghanistan out of the regions they needed to be in and they let the Taliban take over again, right? Obama is trying the "don't be stupid like that" policy, which Cheney-Bush never tried. And many towns are springing back to life in Afghanistan. New, original solution!

Cheney-Bush tried the policy of "ignore Pakistan and ignore Karzi's corruption." Obama is pressuring Pakistan and Karzi, as he promised. New, original solution!

michel1835 fails!

michel1835 says: "Obama is still continuing to use Mr Bush's top military : Gates , Petreaeus and others"

So then the switch from FAILING in Afghanistan to gaining real ground in Afghanistan can only be due to what?

The new Commander-in-Chief! Don't you love CHANGE?

Shockingly, michel1835 says one true thing: "the Republicans do all the dirty work"

Yes. Cheney-Bush did a lot of dirty work, like invading Iraq, because

Iraq did not attack US soil (which we knew BEFORE the invasion)

Iraq had no WMD (which the UN told us BEFORE the invasion)

Iraq had no operational connection to Al-Qaeda (which MANY US and international intelligence agents told us over and over again, and which the Cheney-Bush crowd suppressed)

Iraq HATED Al Qaeda and Al Qaeda hated Saddam's Iraq. But Al Qaeda sure loved Cheney-Bush's Iraq!

Or perhaps AuthoritativeAuthoritaria can point to all your comments saying Bush was "patting himself on the back" when he visited the troops. You can't? Wonder why? Is hypocrisy required for Obama-haters?

And how obese do you have to be for tall and thin to be grounds to try to insult someone?

The poll is weighted heavily with democrats thus the results skew in favor of Obama and the democrats. Not even the CBS poll has Obama this high. All other polls, take your pick (Gallup, Pew, Rasmussen, Fox, PPP, Quinipiac etc. etc) have Obama at well under 50% approval. Just today, Gallup had him matching his an all time low. So much for Obamacare helping him. This latest stunt won't help him either. It'll be seen for what it is.

Friedman said it best. If Iraq goes well, it matters. Win, lose or draw, whatever happens in Afghanistan, it matters not. Obama is exercising a talking point from the election. In turn, he's dumped 120,000 troops into a situation, a country, that doesn't matter. Osama Bin Laden is dead. He was killed the first month of 2002. THAT is why we don't see him, we only hear what CIA says isn't likely to be Bin Laden. Obama is a moron. He's bombing in a sovreign nation, Pakistan, putting troops into Afghanistan where it really doesn't matter, and at the same time, ruining relations with Iraq and Israel.

Bush and Cheney KNEW Afghanistan didn't matter and could never be civilized. To them, Afghanistan was barely worth the drones it took to keep an eye on things.

But along comes President Dummy to mis-calculate the situation and double U.S. casualties there while ignoring the war on our Southern border with Mexico, cancelling the space program and set up unconstitutional entitlement programs. And the press doesn't breathe a word in protest. The Left is a bunch of morons too, btw.

I can't wait until he's gone. A dumber President we have never had.

moebius22 asserts: "The media's preoccupation with health care which has helped the President's numbers."

Actually, the opposite is true. The media preoccupation with the endless health care debate (prolonged by Republican Bad Faith), coincided with a lowering of Obama's poll numbers.

"Public cooling to health-care reform as debate drags on, poll finds"

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2009/12/15/AR2009121503717.html

Deeper analysis of polls showed that much of this was due to the media's preoccupation with airing tea bagger lies without calling them lies, like government death panels (lie), government bureaucrats between you and your doctor (lie), and loss of Medicare (lie). People fooled by these right-wing lies in the corporate media tended to rate Obama lower in the polls. Only time will tell if the facts can penetrate the corporate-funded tea-bagger lies. Do you understand now?

"A major headline about troop or civilian death's will likely hurt it."

Actually, major headlines about increased casualties in Afghanistan do not seem to have Obama's majority approval ratings on Afghanistan.

Maybe that's because of all the positive change that Obama brought to our Afghanistan policy.

Some questions for lars54:

lars54 says without a shred of evidence: "the only reason Obama is in Afghanistan is to take the focus off of Health Care"

1. I guess that's why Obama did the HISTORIC signing ceremony for health care, the HUGE rally to promote it, etc. Why would he do that if he wanted to "take the focus off health care?"

2. It it possible that Obama can finally take some long-delayed trips now that the Republicans can no longer waste the nation's time pretending to be bipartisan while negotiating in bad faith?

lars54 lets his fantasies leak into print: "and the fact that he, Pelosi and Reid rammed through a bill that 80% of the country did not want."

3. If your definition of "rammed" is to gain a Constitutional majority, then what bill in the nation was not "rammed?"

4. And where are you getting your bogus "80%" numbers from? If 80% are against health care reform, why do 48% approve of the president's job on health care?

That slightly more than the number who disapprove, but I'll grant you that the nation is pretty evenly divided.

5. Fortunately for Obama and America, a huge number of the "disapprove" people also believe tea-bagger LIES about the bill, like "government death panels," "government bureaucratic between you and your doctor" and an end to Medicare. Now that you know the truth, will you help to get it out? Or would you rather that those lies prevail?

Are you going to answer?

Regardless of whether the current Afghanistan policy is the correct course one must note it is the only area where Republicans give Obama a reasonable amount of support. Afghanistan will cost taxpayers 30 billion this year. The occupation of Iraq will cost 139 billion. That is 169 billion. Where was the debate on that in Congress? Why weren't Republicans screaming about the 139 billion, at least, for Iraq? Where were the teabaggers when Bush was invading that country? For that matter, Grover Norquist who has never seen a tax he liked, where the hell was he in 2003 when Bush started spending US tax dollars on that invasion? Has Norquist ever said one word about the waste that is Iraq? Yeah, I know, Norquist is one of the biggest pieces of scum to ever inhabit this country so what do you expect?

Why is it that Republicans can spend billions for the military without batting an eyelash but when it comes to providing for the basics for ordinary Americans, health care for instance, they say it costs too much?

Obama met with the troops in Afghanistan? I wonder what he told them, that he's ashamed of America! And that the troops are murderous cowards hurting the poor muslims and they should be ashmed of themselves?

So, since the democrats are in office, I guess they are no longer rooting against our boys in the military like they were when Bush was in office.

Interesting that some think that Obama is "finally" embracing the Bush/Cheney surge when in fact Obama, before being elected, campaigned on pulling troops out of Iraq and then redeploying 30,000 troops to Afghanistan. Now having done that, Pres Obama is receiving praise for his success in Afghanistan, and his use of Predator drones and unmanned weapons (and less reliance on ground troops) in Iraq is proving far more effective than anything Bush/Cheney did during their 8 years.

hey wpforumtroll....

i don't think i'd be too quick to put that healthcare blunder into the 'win column' just yet. you of course realize that some 14 states have filed lawsuits against its legality.

and if you have the time.. i would suggest you go to www.realclearpolitics.com and click on 'polls' up at the top of the page and then select healthcare.

they list some 100 polls from around the country, and 90% of them show the american people OPPOSE obama's healthcare bill... and it's not by a small margin.. it's by a full 10%.

I'm guessing the ONLY reason Herr Obama is in Afghanistan is to appease the HCR opponents. Herr Obama has a strategy for everything, trust me. This FOOL does not care about America, does not care about our military.

We're gonna DUMP THE TRASH in November.

Apparently dumpbama doesn't realize that this November is not a Presidential Election, and that he'll have to wait until 2012 to vote against Obama. Several other commenter seem to have the same notion, unless they're just cutting and pasting from some rant against Pelosi (who, by the way, is not in any danger of losing her seat in November either).

This is the depth of ignorance we're up against. Maybe in November he'll see that Obama isn't on the ballot, think he's no longer in office, and go home happy to watch Fox News.

It's just a shame that Obama has such a divisive, polarizing, hateful personality. He could be such a great leader of ALL of America.

This story is right of the Dems play book. And since when is a six point (43 to 37) difference slim? That's about the margin Obama won by. I guess WaPo will now note that he won a slim victory in 2008. Give your readers a little more credit. Just report the differences. We can decide if they are slim.

What the poll shows is that when Obama pursues sensible policy for a center right country, he gets popular backing which is why the country opposes so much of what the Obama-Pelosi-Reid regime has attempted and done so far. Nobody likes this crew. Congress's approval ratings are the lowest in history. Where's that story? When Bush's ratings tanked it was a daily mantra. Pelosi and Reid have horrible poll ratings. People despise them.

Obama is running away from the health care story by diverting attention to foreign policy. In the last 3 days the WH has put out stories on Russia, Israel and now Afghanistan. It won't work. Many people rightly suspect that Healthcare Reform 1.0 will be followed by 1.1,1.2,2.0, etc. The real goal is to destroy private insurance. In five years the private sector will be so overburdened by the costs that they'll cry uncle and beg the government to take it over which the Dems happily will.(Witness the 100s of millions of write off and thousands of layoffs announced since Tuesday.) The national debt will be written in scientific notation to save ink and type space. The door will be open for China's new role as the world's only super power. The unintended consequence that the libs haven't faced is that unemployment will be double digits for decades and many other programs will drowned under the tsunami of health care costs: Cap and Trade, Energy, Infrastructure, etc. will all be abandoned. Defense will consist of the border patrol with sidearms. A political victory for Obama is a massive loss for the country. The Dems have done more fiscal damage in one year than at any other time in history.

Hunker down America. They're just getting started. Since many of them now are de facto lame ducks, they have nothing to fear. Save your cash. Learn Mandarin or Cantonese.

Palin Tells Constitution-Loving Tea Partiers: We Don’t Need A President Who Is A ‘Constitutional Law Professor’
________________

Note: Most of Your Presidents Past & Present were Lawyers, as well as Senators, Governors, Some Congressmen are Doctors, i Guess Sarah Palin would Rather have Lower or Under -Educated People like Herself in the Oval Office as Commander In Chief.

Search Light Rally: The Tea Party movement loves to express its affection for the Constitution. The Los Angeles Times writes, “Adherence to what supporters deem to be a strict interpretation of constitutional principles is a key tenet of the tea party movement.” Yesterday’s Tea Party rally in Searchlight, NV, for instance, was filled with imagery of the Constitution. Protesters carried signs that read “I honor the Constitution” and “What about the Constitution don’t you understand?” Rally attendee Norman Halfpenny, a 77-year old retired Marine Corps veteran, said, “We need to get our Constitution back.”

In her speech at the rally, Sarah Palin of course paid homage to the Constitution. “Our vision for America is anchored in time-tested truths that the government that governs least governs best, that the Constitution provides the path to a more perfect union — it’s the Constitution,” she exclaimed. And so it’s extremely puzzling that Palin introduced this new attack line against President Obama yesterday:

In these volatile times when we are a nation at war, now more than ever is when we need a commander-in-chief, not a constitutional law professor lecturing us from a lectern.

Ironically, the crowd cheered wildly at Palin’s line.

Perhaps the Tea Partiers feel more comfortable with an “MBA President” who leads the country into economic and international crises.

It looks like Taliban might be defeated after USA would officially withdraw from Afghanistan. Look what is happening in Iraq. the very pro-American PM is, supposedly, ELECTED. A long chain of suicidal attacks with many victims precipitated this election. It seems that USA is much more skillful in organizing suicide bombing and media propaganda than in direct fight. Maybe, Afghanistan is too uncivilized for such approach, who knows? But in any occasion this strange war without purpose and enemy does not look nice, but arm manufactures think differently, and that is, probably, the main issue. Anyhow, the winners in politics are those who are currently THE MOST ADVANCED TECHNICALLY. Obama government should finally realize it in full, even if his predecessors failed to do it.

Posted by: aepelbaum | March 29, 2010 10:58 AM | Report abuse

AuthoritativeAuthoritarian, Palin is not less
approved by Americans than Obama is, and that is how the majority of the country think now. At least, it looks so. I am not in the prediction's business.
The war in Afghanistan is the pure slaughter, which arm manufactures need to test their production. And exactly so it looks. If Obama wants to look better than his predecessors, he needs to develop the new technological revolution. Otherwise, his personality and also color of his skin would make him the worst president. And that is it.

I could not find any statement of just what percentage of voters polled are Democrats vs Republicans vs. Independents.

Specifically:

1) What was the total number polled?

2) How many (what percentage) are Democrats?

3) How many (what percentage) are Republicans?

4) How many (what percentage) are Independents?

I cannot determine the above from the above poll. Without this info, the poll is impossible to interpret.

What if only 20% of the the people polled are Democrats? Knowing that 87% of the Democrats polled approve of Obama's Afghanistan policy does not mean much if only 20% of the voters are Democrats. Similarly for Republicans and Independents.

It also is important to know what percentage of the overall voting population (not just those polled) is Democrat vs. Republican vs. Independent for such polls to be meaningful.

It doesn't matter how many people approve of Obummer in Afghanistan.

After all, people elected the known Marxist trash into the White House in the first place so how smart is THAT?

What matters is, 'Is The USA Winning?'

The answer is "NO" and "It Can Never Win" and "America Is Fighting The Wrong Enemy".

The Enemy is Islam, always has been. Wake up.

Destroying Islam's Haj Holy Places will destroy Islam's credibility and show that Allah for the fake that he is. Short of this and the USA HASN'T GOT A CHANCE.

Always remember (and never forget) that it was Prez Geo Bush that started the Predator and other drone attacks program in the ME.

The fact that it has expanded during the Obummer Admin only confirms the VALIDITY of the Bush Strategy.

A nascent technology, drone warfare has leaped into the 21st Century to take its place in the Arsenal of Democracy.

The United States, Taliban and al Quaeda are mired in two endless wars between MERCENARY ARMIES with both sides committing war crime atrocities on a daily basis -- FOR MONEY.
Suicide bombers are rewarded with up to a quarter-million USD to their families.
Blackwater et al personnel (under whatever name on whatever excuse) are extravagantly paid and the merc companies make big profits.
American military personnel are poorly paid for the risks they take and the things they do, and very poorly looked after when they return home in bits physically and/or mentally -- like most mercs.
And they are all mercs.
Patriotic, brave, dutiful, some even near-saintly, but without the pay and the promises, few would be there.
And without the enormous profits, none of the corporations would supply a single round.

Retired U.S. Marine Major General Smedley Darlington Butler, one of only 19 people to be twice awarded the Medal of Honor, says:--
"War is a racket. It always has been. It is possibly the oldest, easily the most profitable, surely the most vicious. It is the only one international in scope. It is the only one in which the profits are reckoned in dollars and the losses in lives. A racket is best described, I believe, as something that is not what it seems to the majority of the people. Only a small 'inside' group knows what it is about. It is conducted for the benefit of the very few, at the expense of the very many. Out of war a few people make huge fortunes."

In WWI, A.E. Houseman said:--
These, in the day when heaven was falling,
The hour when earth's foundations fled,
Followed their mercenary calling
And took their wages and are dead.
Their shoulders held the sky suspended;
They stood, and earth's foundations stay;
What God abandoned, these defended,
And saved the sum of things for pay.
