Poll: On economy, (still) more negatives than positives

For the first time since last fall, President Obama's handling of the economy merits a positive rating from half of adults, according to a new Washington Post-ABC News poll. Still, most measures of public perceptions about the economy have shown little improvement. And as the parties stake out their economic claims in advance of the midterm elections, the percentage of respondents who say the economic stimulus program is helping has dwindled.

Overall, nearly nine in 10 rate the economy "not so good" or "poor," and while three in 10 see improvement, the same figure say things are getting worse. Among all adults, three in 10 say the government's efforts to stimulate the economy have helped, with about one in 10 seeing "a great deal" of progress from the government's efforts.

Fewer of those polled credit the stimulus program with helping the economy than did so last fall (37 percent said the program was helping in November, compared with 30 percent now). Those numbers are now about on par with those from last summer. Nearly half (49 percent) say the program has made no difference, up 10 points since November, while one in five (20 percent) say the package has damaged the economy.

Views on the stimulus are more closely connected to perceptions of whether the economy is improving than to party identification. While 45 percent of Democrats think the package has helped, that climbs to 59 percent among those who say the nation's economic conditions are on the upswing. Likewise, while 11 percent of Republicans say the package has hurt the nation's economy, that jumps to 42 percent among those who think the economy is backsliding.

The inching up of Obama's approval rating on the economy comes as views of him as an empathetic president are on the decline. In the new poll, 51 percent say Obama "understands the problems of people like you" - a five-point drop from late March. The decline is nearly all among Democrats and Democratic-leaning independents (86 percent viewed him as empathetic in March; 76 percent do so now), and mostly among those with lower household incomes (61 percent in March vs. 47 percent now).

In globalization economy we must found new directions for our own economy. If these directions could create 100% of employment all problems will be solved.
If money alone could save economy we will never have bubbles in housing or cars industries.
They had more money than most of any others and fail,

The real shame is that the party of no is winning the porpaganda war and may be in position to do more grevious, and perhaps even fatal, damage to the republic. By blocking and stalling they are slowing the recovery, spreading misery and thereby making people angry. And their cyicism is well placed -- instead of being angry at the people who caused the disasters, and are slowing the repairs, they are angry with the repairman.

It is like getting angry at the fire company instead of the arsonist because the arsonist used so much accellerant that putting out the fire is so difficult.

Two weeks back we went to visit a community and the home builder said they are raising prices because the economy was doing so good and that they have so much demand for the homes.

... I was told by my employer that there would be no wage increase this year like last year because the economy is doing so bad ...

Economy - good or bad ??? Depends on who you are and whom you ask and which America you belong to -- for average joe and consumer ... economy currently sucks!!! ... 401k tanking, jobs at risk, no wage increases or future prospects, rising energy costs, rising home prices and rents, dwindling interest on savings in the bank.

.. For businesses .. exceptionally low rates of borrowing and low wage costs, high profit margins and so on ...

Here in the Hampton Roads region of Virginia the economy is visibly worsening. Home foreclosures in this morning's newspaper were more then four pages with just a handful of job offers with only two being real jobs. More then sixty thousand jobs lost last quarter with our areas last major private employer, International Paper closing the mill for good and moving production to Brazil. The Norfolk truck plant is now in Mexico and get this...the Mexican embassy held a "Latino Jobs Fair" in Virginia Beach for unemployed illegal Mexican workers some weeks back. None on our local private ship yards now have any work or any scheduled, and that has never happened before now even in the Great Depression. Several local banks are in trouble and real estate prices for homes and now commercial are still falling.
The charity feeding stations here look like Haiti and there are more families begging in shopping parking lots. Behind my home in the park people, including and elderly veteran were living in thier cars...police made them move on. There was a homeless veteran living under my house this past winter, even signed his name, and there is evidense that someone was living in the crawl space of my next door neighbor...and in other crawl spaces in our community.
We keep hearing about some recovery from government and media talking heads...but we are now laying off teachers, some schools here are going to a four day week as is VDOT...hell the state has even asked for volunteers to cut grass along our highways...the contractors and thier illegal Mexican workers are too expensive now...very soon many of our municipalities and our state will not be able to meet thier debts and obligations even with cutting back on expenses...hell the newspaper reported that there were signs of improvement....sure...temporay seasonal job hiring in the Summer tourism industry...how that is an improvement is a mystery...and besides it looks like the beach tourism season will be a disaster...and the temporary college students and illegal workers from Mexico will be laid off...as will the temporary US Census workers...I guess Wall Street's off-shoring of industries and jobs, thier latest conspiracy of looting and theft has done us all in...and now the situation in the Gulf, the loss of the fishing industry and related Gulf business will push the economy over the cliff, which it was going over anyway...now only much quicker.

Well said. Clearly, you are too smart to fall for the Republicans' cynical and destructive tactics. But I fear that most of your fellow citizens are a good deal less intelligent, or at least less informed. It is worth recalling what Adlai Stevenson said, during the 1956 presidential campaign, when a woman exclaimed, "Mr. Stevenson, you have the vote of every thinking person!" Stevenson replied, "That's not enough. I need a majority."

For all these morons asking Obama where the jobs are I can only agree. The solution is of course to create a new Bureau of employment and have the government hire enough people to get us down to 5% employment.

That's what these loons are asking for right? Because Obama can't force private employers to hire people and these kooks hate the government and want to see the majority of civil servants fired.

Truth is the morons don't know what they want or how to get what they think they want. They just want to yell.

What most of the Post commenters overlook is that our nation's problems began in earnest in the Clinton years, accelerated during the Bush years, and continue without interuption during Obama's brief period in office. Both Democratic and Republican politicians have been corrupted by corporate America. Our future is national bankruptcy, anarchy, and a military takeover to quell the insurrection.

There is no hope because the American people are either too stupid or too greedy, depending on which class they belong to.

Everything I have seen locally and nationally, the great stimulus did nothing but help the states meet their budgets, but only for FY 2010. Now the states are having to make the real cuts necessary to try and balance their budgets. I saw a lot of jobs saved with the Stimulus, all government workers at Fed, State, and Local levels, but nothing in private sector jobs. You can bash the Republicans for just saying no, and would like to see the Dems just say no also. During this economic disaster in which everyone is to blame, Just Say No To Spending seems the relevant course.

As we are almost continuously reminded, this is an election year, and if the polls are to be believed, the outcome of this year's election is uncertain at best. I say "uncertain" because polls in June are not the same as votes in November, no matter how many "experts" tell us differently.

Jobs, when they come, will come from the private sector growth. One thing that motivates hiring is certainty, or at least a belief in continuity. What economic growth we see between now and November will probably be the result of OVERTIME, not HIRING. This is also why unemployment numbers lag the rest of the economy when recessions end; it is risky and expensive to hire, before business growth is better assured. It is also expensive to lay people off, so many employers avoid hiring before they are sure.

Liberal Democrats have bought a lot of votes over the years with pie-in-the-sky schemes that cannot survive today. The first recipient of Social Security paid in $22 and before her death at age 100 she had collected $22,000 in benefits. Government employees including teachers have life time jobs, health care and pensions that often exceed their pay. Still Obama and his liberals spend money- as if we had it. We don't. The national debt is 13 trillion dollars. The deficit is over a trillion dollars. Obama and his liberal Democrats from New England to California are spending us into bankruptcy. Americans are now awakening to reality. Liberals prefer to live in a world of dreams.

Amazing just amazing synopsis. 35 years of stupid and reckless domestic policies and it can attributed to Pelosi and Barney Frank. Wow you're brainwashed.....this started under Reagan and was accelerated with Greenspan and the damage they did can't be just swept under the rug.

The endless babble of gov't is the problem we must de-regulate and then piling on tax cuts for the super rich while burning through S.S. trust funds to cover the losses.....that BOZO sure was a great President with sane fiscal policies. We're just lucky our economy survived while the U.S.S.R.'s didn't. He almost had both of us lose that game of chicken.

If the economy is so bad why is every other car I see a brand new luxury car? Why are the malls packed? Why are the movie theaters packed? Why is Whole Foods packed? Why are new $1000 handbags all over the place? Oh right, the economy is only bad for the really poor and the opposition party is fostering this notion merely to get votes so they can get elected and lavish their donors with tax breaks and no bid contracts.

Since when has the employment of one let alone thousands of more bureaucrats been of any benefit to society? The fact that 99.44% of the politicians and the bureaucrats are unemployable outside of government shouldn't give mandarins and miscreants the right to be supported by the taxpayers. It's an out and out waste of monies. Obama is very representative of the government-career employee, ie. incompetent, dishonest and a terrible steward of other people's monies. Give me a Washington Post/ABC Television poll and I can give you the results in advance. Their ideology is wore on their sleeves.

Is this too much for 9,5 million new jobs ??!...
I need the US Government's cooperation to realise it !
Since March 25 , I tried my best to contact President Obama and his Administration by sending e-mails,certified letters and fax(s).
I hope , the US Government will pay attention to my project !
....9,5 million new employment opportunities !

The economy was doing great then the Dems took over in 2007, Obama being part of the "First Hundred Days." The three years of Democratic policies have ruined this country, but at least we now know the Republican administrations work for the working class, the Democrates only work for the upper class and unions. Funny how Democrates deny they have been in power for three going on four years.
