Obama is a Muslim - 18%, 24% or ?

A widely reported poll from the Pew Research Center pegs the number of Americans who believe President Obama is a Muslim at 18 percent. Matt Drudge and others prefer the "shock" Time-SRBI poll showing 24 percent holding this false notion.

What's behind the big difference between these polls, and which is right?

Those seeking a single number are bound for disappointment: it's extraordinarily tough to measure the extent of this misperception. The "closed-ended" question format adds to this difficulty, since presenting people with incorrect answer choices may encourage such responses. The president's detractors are particularly apt to believe negative things about him, and in both polls, most of those who say Obama is a Muslim disapprove of his job performance.

This propensity to assign false, pejorative labels points to one difference between the polls: in the Time poll, 45 percent say they disapprove of the way the president is doing his job, while Pew shows that number at 41 percent.

Question wording is another differentiator: Time pollsters asked, "Do you personally believe that Barack Obama is a Muslim or a Christian," dangling red meat in front of the president's opponents. The Pew question presented respondents with a more extensive list: "Now, thinking about Barack Obama's religious beliefs ... Do you happen to know what Barack Obama's religion is? Is he Christian, Jewish, Muslim, Buddhist, Hindu, atheist, agnostic, or something else?"

Fully 44 percent of those who disapprove of the president in the Time-SRBI poll picked the Muslim option, far higher than the 30 percent of disapprovers who selected Muslim in the Pew poll.

Priming is a third potential source of variation. Briefly, the Time poll tackles the Islamic community center issue, whereas Pew focuses on religion more broadly. The mosque controversy likely primes partisanship, which in turn influences answers to the subsequent survey items. The full questionnaires are here and here.

A fourth difference is timing, with Pew's poll conducted before the president weighed in on the mosque issue, and Time's coming after. However, the dissimilarity in the questions makes a simple time argument impossible as the sole reason.

A fifth, less exciting factor is sampling error, the randomness that stems from drawing relatively small groups from big populations. Given sample sizes and methodology, though, a six-point difference is not trivial.

It's sad to see the intelligence of America at an extreme low with the ignorance of a group of people being manipulated for political garbage. If it wasn't sad it would make for a hilarious sitcom, but the fact is we are becoming a nation of dumb people and for that matter don't we live in a country where freedom of religion still exists even if we had a president someday who was a Muslim?

There are mass murderers and killers in this countries past who have killed in the name of their God, but did we ever in history go to the extreme of blaming all those in that religion for the crime of another. Or protest that there should not be a religious structure near the scene of a murder. America is rapidly becoming a country of lazy sheep who believe anything they hear which is usually one-sided and never do a little research to see both sides of a debate.

In a country of freedom of religion just think how our citizens would react if we had a president who was an athiest? Our many ignorant groups of people in this country would again show their dumbness with laughable protest and comments.

My question is what happened to America for it to go to such extremes when for 8 years no-one came out to complain about the quiet behind the doors decisions made where deals were made that has affected what we are facing now in this country.

It is a mathematical certainty.

WHO CARES!?

The media AGAIN is trying to divert attention by creating a strawman argument, so the whitehouse can play "being accused" and refute. This is how Obama won the election! These are their same tactics to avoid valid issues.

The real issue is that Obama sided with the Mosque by siding with one part of the first amendment and neglecting the other - the part about "free speech". Free speech is there to protest and disagree with disrespecful, distasteful, and simply bad thought out ideas.

The builders of the mosque insist its peaceful but ignore the fact that its disrespectful. They almost insist that people's feeling of disrespect are irrelevant or that them feeling at all - is wrong.

The builders of the mosque also ignore ,and are in almost in deinal, that (even if not their intenent) it will be a magnet for those who wish to pray, smile, and gloat over the desruction and murder of 2700. It simply is inevitable.

Obama sides with a very poor idea, regardless of his religion.

Posted by: jabberwolff | August 20, 2010 9:54 AM | Report abuse

Uh, Jabberwolf, what the President said boils down to this: the First Amendment protects freedom of religion. We should support this right because it is one of the great pillars on which the Republic was founded. Having said that, I won't comment on the wisdom of building the mosque there. That is for mosque adherents and the people of New York to decide.

So, can you kindly explain to me how "Obama sides with a very poor idea", other than in supporting the Constitution, which, as President, well ... you know.

To be honest the media needs to focus in on unemployment. They need to examine why corporate mergers, acquistions, and buyouts have destroyed the employment in the US along with outsourcing.

They need to devote time to discussing breaking up large companies into many smaller ones and end outsourcing and forcing outsourced jobs back into the US.

All this other stuff is non-sense.

Utter morons and Palin panty sniffers. Beck worshippers. Limbaugh addicts. Uneducated xenophobic white men in their middle years. Obama was raised and registered as a Muslim when he entered First Grade at St Francis of Assisi shcool in Indonesia. Once you are raised as a Muslim, your upbringing will never change. He is a Muslim. Also in 1981, we have a travel restriction in Pakistan but Obama was able to there and use other countries passport instead of a US Passport as Americans are restricted to travel to that country.

@ jabberwolff - why is the planned community center disrespectful when there are many other establishments in the direct vicinity of the planned site? There are strip clubs and off-track betting sites right next store to the planned site. Shouldn't these places be offensive to Christians since these activities are in opposition to the teachings of the bible. I'm with your line of thinking that if the area of the planned site and nearby establishments is considered "hollowed ground" (as NY Rep. Peter King has said), it is disrespectful to have any activity other than that which shows respect and deference to the horrible events of September 11, 2001. However, I'm not with you if only the planned community center is banned while the bars, strip clubs, coffee shops, churches, mosques, etc. are not held to the same standards. There should be nothing but a memorial in that area if the area is truly to be considered "hollowed ground".

But even for those who've never been to Islamic countries, it's pretty simple knowledge that kids of a Muslim father are Muslims by default at birth. Only he knows for sure whether his conversion in Rev Wright's church was real or just a cynical and opportunistic effort at building the credentials necessary to be a local community organizer and then run for national office. Clearly he was raised a Muslim as a boy. I imagine that's why his birth certificate has never been released - it probably lists religion as "muslim," and that's just something he didn't want to get into.

All you Obama haters are conveniently forgetting all the moaning you did about Obama's former pastor, Reverend Jeremiah Wright, during the Obama campaign. Is Wright a Muslim? (hint -- the answer is NO)

Of course, this is all beside the point. If you are offended by the possibility that he's not a Christian, then you are an intolerant bigot. And that is a fact.

Settlers first came to this country to escape religious persecution, and here we have people who call themselves Americans encouraging it.

Like his citizenship, Obama, and the White House, have failed to provide any information that would lead one to believe that Obama's isn't a Muslim, or is a citizen.

Obama was born of Muslim parents and grand parents, and his step father was a Muslim. He attended a Muslim school where his registration documents show that his religion was Muslim.

President Obama's middle name is Hussein, which was his grandfather's first name. The name, of Arabic origin, means "good" or "handsome one." It is common in Muslim cultures for children (both boys and girls) to have a middle name which directly connects them to their father or grandfather.

CharlieTuna666, as a matter of fact, I do know someone with the first name Hussein who is Christian. Hussein is an Arabic name, and is not solely a Muslim one. As I am sure you know, approximately 250 million people in the world are native Arabic speakers and I assure you that they are not all Muslim. Furthermore, this is a ridiculous argument. You posit that you can know someone's religion due to the linguistic origin of their name. I just don't think that argument holds water. How could you possibly know what someone believes unless you ask them?

Guess your "settled" answer is not so "settled".

Posted by: DCView | August 20, 2010 10:59 AM | Report abuse

Two key perspectives are relevant. One, Muslims have a reputation (appropos or not) for not being truthful (due to Mohammed's Quranic encouragement in the context of war). Therefore, a certain paranoia has developed around both Muslims and those "warm" towards them due to exasperated fear at how to get to the truth. Second, liberal Christianity, which Obama has chosen, is decidedly agnostic about which "path" is the right one, basically claiming they're all good. What really matters to the liberal Christian is not Christ over Allah or Buddha but rather the golden rule over greed and oppression. Therefore, both Obama's choice of Christian church as well as both warmth toward Islam and descent from a Muslim creates a perfect storm of disbelief among true believer Christians; who see Muslims as hell bound Christ-rejecting possible liars and liberal Christians as hell bound heretic, miracle denying do-gooders. Either way, though Obama likes Jesus' teachings, his "brand" of Christianity is prone to not care if Christ really rose from the dead. Rather, what matters is that Christ was willing to sacrifice for truth and justice. So, it is logically consistent to be a liberal Christian and pro-Quran all at the same time. Hence, the question becomes whether or not Obama leans far enough that way, that he might as well just be a Muslim who appreciates Jesus teachings as opposed to a Christian who thinks Islam is just as "right" a religion as Christianity. Liberal Christianity would not be offended either way. Conservative Christianity calls both spiritual wickedness.

If Ground Zero is such "Hallowed Ground" why is a huge skyscrapper being built right on it? Since it seems Americans are in the mood to judge what can be built 2 blocks away are we going to be able to decide which companies get to rent office space in the building? What if a Saudi Arabian-based company wants to rent there? If Ground Zero is so sacred then why hasn't NYC, the State of NY or the US Government, purchased this area of land like what happened to Gettysburg or Pearl Harbor? Why because NYC and NY State don't want to lose the revenue that building a huge, gaudy for-profit skyscrapper would bring in. Doesn't sound like this "Hallowed Ground" is very hallowed.

This is just a made-up controversy hatched for political purposes.

Did you people know that Rush H. Limbaugh--Rush A$$head Limbaugh's father--came from Nazi Germany origins? His name Limbaugh figures prominently in Nazi lore. The Limbaughs were widely know to have been involved with the Krupp family in Germany. Adolf Krupp was known as the man who built Hitler's military machine.

It is easy to see that the name Limbaugh is German and that name "Rush"--it is well known that German authoritarian types love to name their male children with macho typ names like Wolf and Rush. In German the name Rush means "Great Wind".

Rush Limbaugh is a Nazi and nothing any of you can say to me will convince me otherwise.

Obama puts hie incompetent self in a black liberal theology "church" for 20years that preaches, "...not God bless America but God Damn America". He advocates the killing babies just before they can take he or she can their first breath or just after. He condones a Monument to the successful Islmo terrorists on 9/11.
One thing is for sure, Obama is no Christian.

There should be no surprise with the growing number of Americans that believe Obama is a muslim. Many of his statements and actions lend credence to that belief and he rarely attends religeous services, preferring to play golf while thinking of ways to raise taxes. Americans will do the right thing and make a change next election.

So, this high-minded debate is really awesome and all, but I think you're missing the point of the article. It's about sources of error and discrepancy in polling data. This type of analysis is done all the time, but maybe if they try to do it with this hotly-debated question (which really measures what percentage of people we hope don't bother to vote because they're so stupid) they'll get people to read it and learn something. Sadly, that didn't seem to work out. Feel free to keep sniping at each other as if it might actually do any good/change any minds...it's mildly entertaining for the rest of us.

The more interesting stat from the poll is that only 34% believe Obama is a Christian, despite the media insistence that he is one. It seems a majority of American public (66%) doesn't find the media's proclamation very convincing.

Poll: Growing number in U.S. say Obama a Muslim; more Republicans say he's Muslim than Christian

----

More confirmation for me that Republicans are a separate race, not quite as evolved as Democrats and way behind Progressives and Green's.

What America needs is a strong third party! It will be good for democracy. I'll vote for Progressive or Green just to help make it happen.

He's not a Muslim... but the more important question is--AND IF HE WERE, SO WHAT? There's nothing wrong with Americans being Muslims or Muslims being Americans. We should champion the diversity of our country and one of the founding principles of our nation--freedom of religion. The President's religious beliefs are a personal matter and do not have bearing on his qualifications for the job. The White House should not feel compelled to waste time proving that he's a Christian. Just say that he is (if they even feel it's necessary) that his religion is a personal matter, and move on.

The hypocrisy of people no longer shocks me but it still saddens me. The last real practicing Christian in the White House was Jimmy Carter. I'm pretty sure I know how most of these people commenting that President Obama is a Muslim feel about Jimmy Carter!

One may not agree with President Obama, but to refuse to acknowledge his intelligence, his decency, his patriotism and his strong - and very real - family values speaks to something very wrong with America and, something very un-Christian.

There were also some comments indicating that the poster's IQ is somewhere in the low single digits. One thing illustrated by many of the comments, whether intelligent or stupid, is the degree of passion that posters have. I think passion is a worthy attribute. However, passion without intelligence is why we have wars, genocide, and Bush, Palin, Beck, Limbaugh, Fox News, etc.

It depends on who you ask and why? If those you ask hates this country and wants this country to be fundamentally changed and transformed to socialism then it's OK if they see Obama as a Muslim. If you ask those who wants to keep the America we grew up in, then their intolerant. First impressions are everything. Where did the people get this idea Obama is a Muslim? Where did the people get the idea Obama is a socialist? Where did the people get the idea Obama wants to take over everything and put it under government control? Where did the people get the idea Obama is a ruler, not a President? Where did the people get the idea Obama has the fundamentals of a Muslim because he was born and raised as a Muslim? Where did the people get all this. They got it from Obama himself. From his book, from those he associated with as he was growing up and from his actions as President. No one is to blame where the people got the idea Obama is a Muslim, but from Obama himself. He goes against the American people every chance he gets. He does it so naturally, he steps into it before he has time to think because that's the way he thinks. Obama is a Muslim in his heart, doesn't think like an American President, and doesn't see anything wrong with being on the opposite side of the American people and this country because he's more concern how he will look to those outside of this country instead of the American people.

When you see a poll like this and some of the comments listed here, it demonstrates that the American education system has truly failed to provide its people with the capacity to read and think.

@charlietuna666
There are quite a few Afro-American Christians, and Palestinian Christian, and Yemeni Jews and Iraqui Christians, Lebonese Christians, (didn't Mash's Corporal Klinger have a Uncle Hussein), Arab atheists with the name Hussein. The name is Arabic which is a nationality NOT a religion. You are merely displaying your xenophobic ignorance (Which for you Charlietuna666 means fear of strangers).

@mcaboy84 So I guess that means everyone who has ever gone to a Catholic School is Catholic forever even if they have never been in a catholic church, and I guess Madeline Murray O'Hare was a catholic despite her claims of atheism. mcaboy84 your comment makes no sense.

@jblast200 You are calling 80% of the people in this country who identify themselves as Christians, non-Christian. How dare you tell me what causes I can or can not support on the basis of my religion.

Hey, if you're going to bend over to Islam, at least respect their tradition. If the father is Islamic, the child is Islamic. That means, under Islam, Barak Hussein Obama IS Islamic. HIS children are Islamic. His WIFE is Islamic. And for Barak Hussein Obama to then deny is Islamic heritage is an apostasy, Barak Hussein Obama in an apostate, and under Islamic law, he's to be killed by beheading or stoning and if he was a little old citizen in an Islamic country, he WOULD be. But THIS is Islamic law. Obama IS an Islamic under Islamic law. Period. End of sentence. Grant him a pass on it if you wish (Rev. Wright's "church of hatred" was certainly no better), but at least respect Islamic tradition and law.

You Democrat deniers like to pick and choose. Respect this, disregard that, you choose your beliefs, you politics and your talking points according to the situation at hand whether Constitutional, religious, or military and defense. Well, I have news for you. Right and wrong isn't a salad bar that you choose your dish ala cart, right and wrong is right and wrong. Islamic law is Islamic law. It doesn't go away because it's inconvenient for this weeks' argument, Barak Hussein Obama is, by his heritage, the very definition of Islamic. As was his father, as are his children. Get OVER it. Celebrate it. Allow him the luxury of owning up to it. The truth will set him free.

THEN, we can settle up the issue of his lack of a valid birth certificate. You deniers have a lot to explain on THAT, too.

Whether you voted for Obama or not, whether you believe he is a Muslim or a socialist or a communist or a terrorist, there is a basic sense of unfairness in all of this. No one ever questioned any past President on his origins or his religion. Why? Why now? It is pretty G-dammed obvious why. It is racial.

Since we have all descended into this sort of basic unfairness and breaking of one of the commandments (Thou shalt not bear false witness...), then I charge all of you Obama accusers of being racial bigots. Can you prove to me that you are not? I also charge Ben Quale of being a dealer in child pornography. Will he--not can he--furnish evidence that he is not.

Folks, I think we need a reality check here. Answering a survey question doesn't really necessarily reflect ones true views. It's rather odd that as President Obama's popularity has gone down his identification as a Muslim has gone up. Those two thing aren't NECESSARILY connected and yet they appear to be in the survey.

I hope that no one is shocked to learn that I personally know people who would answer that President Obama was a Muslim on a survey and would also admit to knowing that it wasn't really true.

Christian, Muslim, it's all the same to me. Who cares? Me. I would rather see someone unencumbered by the mindless followers of any religion. Why an atheist might lie in order to start a war, he might stifle scientific research that could save millions of lives, why he might even... oh, wait...forget it.

Askgees, one could play that game with anyone. But isn't the most appropriate burden to be placed on those who accuse? Apparently you believe in the concept that one is guilty until they can prove otherwise. Well then, I believe you are a racist bigot. And I also believe that you were born out of wedlock. Can and will you produce evidence to the contrary? Until you do, I must assume your guilt.

How does this paper or any of its reporters know? The man is shrouded with secrecy, hides and deceives. But frankly, he could be behind the door worshiping a rock for all I care. People have just tuned him out and turned him off. If your actions never correspond to your words you are but a clinging in the wind. If you stand for nothing pretty soon you are just that, nothing. People do not realize is that the Presidency is a pr job. When your word means nothing, shallow and empty then you are finished. This man has nothing to really offer and he really never did. I would not make fun of those who think he is muslim since his behavior exhibited is anything but Christian.

The Democrats and the liberal media want America to talk abouth anything BUT the record of the Democrats.

They LOVE occupying voters with discussions on whether Obama is a Moslem.

They DON'T want you to talk out-
-Obama and the Democratic Party's giveaway of one trillion tax payer dollars on the Stimulous Bill which created almost NO jobs.
-How Obama and the Democrats cut Medicare by half a trillion dollars.
-How Obama's wild spending has driven the Federal deficit upt to 13-19 trillion dollars to be repaid later by your children and grandchildren.

Throw the bums out!!!

I look at a web site called RealClearPolitics that gives a list of several polls. What I find is that some are constituently more negative toward President Obama than others. That tells me that how you limit the sample, whether or not you just call landlines, and how you ask the question all influence the outcome.

Also, there is so much daily polling now that I think it makes media stories about the outcome of a single poll almost meaningless.

I think many more americans now think Obama is a racist.

This latest incident looks a lot like stagecraft and the same with the Sherrod Henry Gates and rev Wright incidents.

the story lines on all these incidents are phoney and concocted. This latest and the sherrod are similar in that the are 'faking' people out.

I nvever in my wildest nightmare ever thought we would have a president with so little ability and less conscience that Obama

His use of race to divide this country will do just that. Many will come to view his 'neglect' of the economy as purposful and meant to hurt the white population in this country.

this is a terrible situation brewing and the democrats are directly responsible.

After speaking boldly before an Islamic dinner group as to his intention to put the full weight of his presidency behind the Muslim right to build the Cordova Victory mosque that would overlook the hallowed crater of the former World Trade Center, Obama is now in full retreat to quell the firestorm of angry protests from the American electorate over his ill-advised bluster. His latest escape maneuver is to suggest that this is a "local" issue which he will not venture further into. Recall that it was Obama himself who wrote that in the event of a conflict: "I will stand with the Muslims". Well, for your enlightenment Mr. Obama, 9/11 and the murder of 3000 innocent Americans is anything but a local issue. This event, which you seem to take with such little regard, was an Islamic terrorist assault on our entire Nation. A Nation that so many patriots have shed their blood to build and to nurture. The same Nation that you have traveled the world denigrating in your self-promotional diatribes, especially before Islamic leaders to whom you bow. We were listening in silent disgust when you held America up to your Muslim brethern as a prime evil in the world; but, that disgust is no longer "silent"; and, you will feel the full fury of the tsunami that you have created this coming November. Please educate yourselves on the Muslim Practice of Taqiyya, lying to the infidels. This is why Obama is lying about his birthplace, religion, etc.

The Articulation of Taqiyya

Qur’anic verse 3:28 is often seen as the primary verse that sanctions deception towards non-Muslims: “Let believers [Muslims] not take infidels [non-Muslims] for friends and allies instead of believers. Whoever does this shall have no relationship left with God–unless you but guard yourselves against them, taking precautions.”[7]

Muhammad ibn Jarir at-Tabari (d. 923), author of a standard and authoritative Qur’an commentary, explains verse 3:28 as follows:

If you [Muslims] are under their [non-Muslims'] authority, fearing for yourselves, behave loyally to them with your tongue while harboring inner animosity for them … [know that] God has forbidden believers from being friendly or on intimate terms with the infidels rather than other believers–except when infidels are above them [in authority]. Should that be the case, let them act friendly towards them while preserving their religion.[8]

Taqiyya:
Muslim deception can be viewed as a slightly less than noble means to the glorious end of Islamic hegemony under Shari'a, which is seen as good for both Muslims and non-Muslims. In this sense, lying in the service of altruism is permissible. In a recent example, Muslim cleric Mahmoud al-Masri publicly recounted a story where a Muslim lied and misled a Jew into converting to Islam, calling it a "beautiful trick."

Taqiyya offers two basic uses. The better known revolves around dissembling over one's religious identity when in fear of persecution. Such has been the historical usage of taqiyya among Shi'i communities whenever and wherever their Sunni rivals have outnumbered and thus threatened them. Conversely, Sunni Muslims, far from suffering persecution have, whenever capability allowed, waged jihad against the realm of unbelief; and it is here that they have deployed taqiyya--not as dissimulation but as active deceit. In fact, deceit, which is doctrinally grounded in Islam, is often depicted as being equal--sometimes superior--to other universal military virtues, such as courage, fortitude, or self-sacrifice.

It's fun to watch the so-called "minorities" (really "global majorities" and essentially the non-White, non-Protestant population of Homo sapiens).

They side with their own ethnic/racial interests at each turn, whatever else they hate the White Protestant and defend "The Other" no matter how contradictory or absurd.

This is why my people have, traditionally, eradicated your people. There is no arguing with self-obsessed motley "Others" whose only interest in Self.

They do not care about others. They want only what others possess and, like criminals, howl with protest when caught.

Not one person in the US apart from Odumbo himself knows the truth of his birth circumstances. Perhaps he does not know as it's entirely possible his miscegenating, self-hating mother was too ashamed of her half-breed spawn to document it, instead "fudging" the paperwork for the best deal possible under the circumstances.

Be that as it may, it is awe inspring to witness the deliberate, willful suspension of disbelief among the howling Obamunist masses who, in unison with their COMINTERN talking points, spew the most hateful venom and mindless attacks to defend their Supreme Leader of the Moment.

Guess what, robot-brains? Your time is coming to a close because we the "Country Class" have had it to our eyeballs with your incessant greed and insulting mouth. That you are all, almost to a man, aliens that came here looking for money, seals your fate.

Otto,

I don't recall any one asking for the opinion of a two-bit, bucket mouth, drug addicted New Yorker in order to make a personal decision as to where they stand regarding whatever race, creed or religion obama is.
What I do know for a fact is this.....

He bowed to a King of a Mulsim country which would never tolerate Christians.

He snubbed Isreal, while coddling Palestine.

He allowed the president of Mexico to villify America. (Surprising since Mexico is a wasteland)

The following is a quote from his book, The Audacity of Hope
"Of course, not all my conversations in immigrant communities follow this easy pattern. In the wake of 9/11, my meetings with Arab and Pakistani Americans, for example, have a more urgent quality, for the stories of detentions and FBI questioning and hard stares from neighbors have shaken their sense of security and belonging. They have been reminded that the history of immigration in this country has a dark underbelly; they need specific reassurances that their citizenship really means something, that America has learned the right lessons from the Japanese internments during World War II, and that I will stand with them should the political winds shift in an ugly direction."

He said that in his stupid book Otto, you stupid left wing barf bag.

So actually no one knows for sure where his heart is (unless of course it's hoops, or vacations, or campaigning, or photo ops..........)

Similarly, there are Muslims of African and European descent - Rep. Keith Ellison of Minnesota is African American and a Muslim. However, our President is not Muslim and even if he were, there would be nothing wrong with that.

Interesting that the left wing colluding media (Jornolist) that jumped in bed with Obama a refused to even vet him would wonder why Americans don't really know who he REALLY IS.
Interesting again that Tom Brokaw and Charlie Rose, not really Republicans, were talking how little they really knew about Obama. This was JUST AFTER THE ELECTION!

Then they're pissed off about the results and blame Republicans.

erodrik:

If your understanding of your own racial history is this confused, it's no wonder your people were dragged from the Stone Age kicking and screaming.

I suggest you refresh your learning on the Mayflower and Plymouth colony; the warlike nature of the local natives who enjoyed killing each other as an act of macho; the various land purchases made by the Pilgrims and the Puritans that followed; the facts of numerous tribes that (correctly and wisely) sided with the Americans and today are fully integrated and successful.

As for the syphilis thing, you'll have to take that up with the spawn of the Conquistadors, currently invading my country at will. I dislike them as much as you dislike them.

The problem is NOT that people believe Obama is a foreign born Muslim. That is, as numerous articles state, just plain stupid. The real problem is that these people resent the fact that he is black. Calling him a Muslim is in fact a euphemism, for using the N-word. It’s politically acceptable and relieves people of having to confront their own deep seated racism.
The anarchists who are stoking these beliefs are keenly aware of what it means.
It goes like this: “A black man should not be president, but I can’t say that because I’ll get arrested and appear to be un-American. So instead, I’ll just say he’s a Muslim that wasn’t even born here. That way I can express my racism and appear politically engaged and still be able to deny that I am a racist.

So what if he had a Muslim father. My biological father was Catholic but I was not raised Catholic. He denounced Catholicism after the marriage of my mother and father. My mother was Methodist so he became one and that's how I was raised. Am I really Catholic then, when my biological father was one, at one time??????

And what about the Jewish religion/faith. They convert all the time from "orthodox to reformed". Many wives (raised in another religion) will take up the Jewish religion when they marry. Even the WASP(s)

President Obama has been doing a wonderful job, by the mere fact that everyone is out to get "something on him". Always know where your enemies are so you know where they are shooting from --is what I say.

What I have a problem with is his solution to use other people's money and resources to buy votes, and placing this Country in debt for decades to come. Candidly, wish he would find a religion to instill some discipline in his soul!

Muslims do see that due to parental upbringing practices and custom, not all children grow up to be Muslims. In Obama's case, the fact his father was a Muslim is trivial. His father was absent and had no hand in his upbringing. Obama was left in the care of his mother and her family who were secularists or Christian, repsectively. In short, due to his father's failure to participate in his son's upbringing, Barack eventually became a Christian. Even if Barack had been raised to be a Muslim by his father, he would have had to, at puberty, declare his faith, much like Christian Baptists, by stating, "'there is no god apart from God, and Muhammad is the Messenger of God.'" (Most Christians are ignorant of the fact that Allah translates as "the God." In the Orthodox Christian churches that use a Semitic language liturgy, e.g., Syriac, God (an Anglo-Saxon, Germanic word) is addressed as, alaha or Allah. Allah, as with God, Deus, Dios, etc. is not a personal name but a title.) There is no authority that can designate someone a Muslim who does not make this profession of faith. On the other hand, there is no authority that can declare a Muslim a non-Muslim; only the individual can accept or reject the faith. Ironically, conservative Republicans seem to have no problem embracing proselytes from non-Christian faiths who were raised in those faiths, e.g. Bobby Jindal, a convert from Hinduism or Niki Haley, a convert from Sikhism, but balk at accepting Barack as a Christian, in spite of the fact that he was not raised a Muslim. Given the fact that both Jindal and Haley were fostered in non-Christian homes and only converted as a young adult and an adult, respectively, the charge of opportunism or questioning the sincerity of their belief could more rightly be leveled against them than Obama.

Who thinks we have bigger problems in this country than worrying about if the President is Muslim? This is nothing but a distraction. Who cares if people think he is Muslim. My real issue with the President is he seems indecisive, makes a lot of false promises and inspires no confidence in showing us that the best way to overcome economic probles is to borrow more money and spend it as quick as possible. Call me crazy but this defies common sense and spells disaster for most Americans. President Obama was an elected official in Illinois prior to entering the national stage and he left that state broke did he not notice. Illinois has one of the biggests deficits in the country. Chicago has some of the most violence ridden schools in the country and some of the most corrupt political representatives in America. Everything in the Presidents past history points to the same problems we are seeing now. Change policy, and show some control of the situation Americans are never going to care what religion you are if policy and results are what you are judged by.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

So I guess Hillary Clinton is a Muslim too, eh? And she didn't use her American passport when she visited Pakistan this year either. And, my goodness, who told you that you are registered as a Muslim? You mean his parents put "muslim" as his religion on his 1st grade enrollment papers? Or, since "muslim" is not a religion, did they put Islam? And is Islam the only religion that people cannot convert from? Or have you not heard of the Christian communities in several different Arab countries?

If one just listens to what BO has said over the last 10 years or so it makes one wonder what his true religion is or even if he has one.

The "social justice/collective salvation" he preaches in many of his speeches is heresy and not Christian at all.

I only lean toward Islam because that's what his childhood background is plus this from an interview he gave in 2007,
"Obama recalled the opening lines of the Arabic call to prayer, reciting them with a first-rate accent. In a remark that seemed delightfully uncalculated (it’ll give Alabama voters heart attacks), Mr. Obama described the call to prayer as “one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.”"

I don't think many, if any, Christians would make that claim.......

Either way, though Obama likes Jesus' teachings, his "brand" of Christianity is prone to not care if Christ really rose from the dead. Rather, what matters is that Christ was willing to sacrifice for truth and justice. So, it is logically consistent to be a liberal Christian and pro-Quran all at the same time

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Your lack of knowledge about religious history makes "Conservative Christianity" sound like a cult. If you actually read the teachings of Jesus, whom you supposedly follow, you find that he would have never condemned one group of people as "bound for hell"....not even the Jews and Romans who put him on the cross. He still asked his heavenly to forgive them.

I don't know what "brand" of Christianity you believe in, but be careful passing judgement on other, lest you, yourself, be judged.

This is a very helpful article in that it points out some of the problems with interpreting poling results. It's especially important in that so much of today's "journalism" is based on polls, rather than actual investigation.

Another problem is that the results are presented in such a simple-minded, misleading way, due either to the poorly-constructed nature of the survey or to the reporter's ignorance. To make any sense of this particular poll, the various percents should be broken down in much more detail. We need to know, for example, what percentage of democrats vs republicans, liberals vs conservatives, moderate conservatives vs. extreme conservatives, Fox news vs MSM news watchers, and so on think Obama's a muslim. There are many of these sorts of markers that could be easily measured and analyzed. Then we could at least begin to understand what makes people so misinformed.

We have decreed that this shall be the case. We have also decreed that no one who is a member of this religion can change to another religion, and that anyone who was a member of another religion at the time that this religion was created, is no longer a member of that religion?

What? You don't agree? That's too bad, under our new religion, once a member always a member and you can be made a member either by being declared a member by the Chief Prophet or by being found to be a second cousin, twice removed to any member.

EVIDENCE THAT BARACK HUSSEIN OBAMA IS "OBVIOUSLY" A CHRISTIAN

----------------------
[During interview with George Stephanopoulos]

Obama: You are absolutely right that John McCain has not ... uhhh... talked about my Muslim faith, and you're absolutely right that that has not come--"

Stephanopoulos: "Your Christian faith."

Obama: "...My Christian faith..."

-----

"[The Muslim call to prayer is] one of the prettiest sounds on Earth at sunset.” ~Barack Hussein Obama

-----

"God damn America!" ~ "reverend" Jeremiah Wright, Obama's "spiritual mentor" for 20 years

-----

[image of Obama kowtowing deeply to Saudi dignitary]

-----

"...typical white person." [Talking about his grandmother who raised him.] ~ Barack Hussein Obama

-----

Dreams from my Father [from the title of a book by Barack Obama, referring to his Muslim father who did NOT raise him]

-----

"...they [certain rural Americans] get bitter, they cling to their guns or religion..." ~ Barack Hussein Obama

-----

Conspicuous absence of church attendance

-----

Obama verbally expresses strong unequivocal support for the "right" to build the Abomination Mosque at Ground Zero, a monument to Islam proximate to ground made sacrosanct due to the American blood spilled there as a result of an Islamic terrorist attack

===============

Maybe he is a Christian, but to pretend there isn't room for speculation otherwise ... well ... that sounds like a pretty desperate attempt to quash any and all scrutiny. And the President of the United States will ALWAYS be subject to scrutiny.

And, it's not like "switching" to Christianity would have any ramifications on "political packaging" -- or anything like that.

METHINKS THE "USEFUL IDIOT" MEDIA AND THE FRINGE-WACKO LIBERAL ZOMBIES DOTH PROTEST TOO MUCH.

Ah, more out of context mis-quotations. The quote was from a speech by his Pastor. Reading the quote in context, it makes a good deal of sense as a rhetorical device. But that's okay, its pretty clear that quotes can't be taken out of context and that obviously any few words taken out of context said must be considered to reflect the total and complete view of the man. Hmm ~ the Islamic standard, enforceable through the death penalty (which may be administered by ANY Moslem) is that if your baby-daddy was Moslem, then you are Moslem.

Living in the US we tend to forget this since people regularly change religions.

Another item of Moslem belief is that we are ALL born Moslem but we grow up and drift into religious error outside of Islam.

What I find simply amazing is the number of Jews and Liberals on the net who kvetch constantly about the Christian belief that there's but one way to Heaven and that's through Jesus. Then, they simply overlook the Islamic beliefs about what to do with unbelievers, or with Christians and Jews.

Polls are useless. For example, the poll apparently asked, "What do you admire about Muslims?" and a lot of people answered "Nothing". But I would have chosen that answer, since "Nothing" could be taken as a synonym for "Zero", and, if the Arabs hadn't invented the zero during the Middle Ages, we'd all still be trying work with Roman numerals!

There's a real question as to whether or not telephone polls are keeping pace with modern technology.

Polls have all sorts of built-in factors to try and insure accuracy, but it's true that they're basic format may be out of date.

The time when you could just randomly call thousands of people and come up with a relatively accurate cross-section of the American populace is coming to an end. Fewer and fewer people have land-lines, for instance. And more and more people screen their calls.

So the question is, do random telephone polls really provide an accurate cross-section of America anymore, or do the numbers skew mainly toward the segment of the population that has a land line and is willing to answer "unknown number" or "800 number" or similar.

When people found out that Barrack Hussein Obama was enrolled as a Muslim child in school and his father and stepfather were both Muslims, people said it didn't matter.

Is it a war or a US Soldier killing field meatgrinder?

Pernicious Democrats and their screwy numbers accounting for wounded and KIA USA heros makes everyone nervous.

I can't believe the news media spent so much time on the 18% that believes that President Obama is not a Christian. No other president in history has been treated as bad as this president. This is supposed to be the UNITED states but it seems like the news media is trying to divide the nation. They overlook all the good things that he has done. So far, we haven't heard the republicans come up with any plans to fix the problems that we face. They just want to hate President Obama.

It seems like we're missing the point about the mosque. Our pres is correct that this initiative is a 1st amendment right, but it is difficult to justify a reasoning for wanting to build this mosque at the chosen location. The muslim backers have to know that this will create animosity among some americans. Their proclaimed motive is peace and unity, but I have to question is it really? Over the course of history muslims have had a tendency to build site where they have claimed victories for Sharia law. Sharia law is very clear it leaves no room for unity unless you live by its law. I can't help but think maybe this is one of those instances. As far as our pres being muslim, he brought this on himself by commenting at all. It really should be for the NYers to decide. His only priority right now should be putting this great country of ours back to work.

How many of these fools take their family to church every Sunday like Obama? Even if he was a muslim which he is not, does that automatically make you an evil terrorist? Most polls use land lines skewering the result to reflect an older population. Poll people having no land lines and the results would be dramatically different.

Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets - Who in their preaching describe a broad way to heaven: it is their prophesying, their teaching the broad way, rather than their walking in it themselves, that is here chiefly spoken of. All those are false prophets, who teach any other way than that our Lord hath here marked out. In sheep's clothing - With outside religion and fair professions of love: Wolves - Not feeding, but destroying souls.

16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?

7:16 By their fruits ye shall know them - A short, plain, easy rule, whereby to know true from false prophets: and one that may be applied by people of the weakest capacity, who are not accustomed to deep reasoning. True prophets convert sinners to God, or at least confirm and strengthen those that are converted. False prophets do not. They also are false prophets, who though speaking the very truth, yet are not sent by the Spirit of God, but come in their own name, to declare it: their grand mark is, Not turning men from the power of Satan to God. Luke 6:43,44.

Id bet that many of the people who think President Obama is a Muslim are intense followers of his actions. They extrapolate and interpret those actions to conclude that he is more sympathetic to the political agenda of the Muslims than to those of Christian, Jewish and non-belivers.

Although I personally see a much more secular agenda, they have a point.

The results of polling always depend on the way the question and the answers are "cooked." What if you know what the President's professed religion is, but you don't know (or suspect otherwise) what his true beliefs are? How are you supposed to answer either poll then? At best you'll be counted as "undecided" or "don't know"--which is inaccurate if you think you do know but say that your opinion doesn't fit any of the offered choices.

Another complication is that many people are likely to answer depending on what they think the President's "religion" is from a cultural standpoint, rather than religious belief.

A further problem is that the people who answer one way or the other may not necessarily think it makes any difference at all what his religion is. Why does the author of this article, presumably a Washington Post reporter, automatically consider being Muslim to be negative? Because that's what the article says: "The president's detractors are particularly apt to believe negative things about him ... most of those who say Obama is a Muslim disapprove of his job performance."

I don't think the Republicans should be worried about President Obama's religion, since we are not sure what religion each of them practice. Everything the Republicans do and say out of their mouths go against Christianity. And what about the Ten Commandments? Well, keep reading because the Republicans have broken all of the commandments listed below.

Commandment Number 6: You shall not murder.

I guess Bush (Sr. and Jr.) and Cheney must have missed that memo when the invaded Iraq. And Cheney must have missed it when he shot Harry Whittington in the face. I bet Harry won't cross him again.

Commandment Number 7: “You shall not commit adultery."

Mark Sanford caught committing adultery. The party of family values, indeed!

John Ensign admits to affair with wife of a staffer and close friend. (He's guilty of the 10th Commandment too)

John McCain was still married to first wife when he took up with the current Mrs. McCain.

Newt Gingrich (x2, at least)

Vic Fossella admitted to police to having a child out-of-wedlock when stopped for drunk driving.

Larry Craig (same sex encounters count, too)

David Vitter (ditto paid-for encounters) implicated as a client of "D.C. Madam

Donald Sherwood admitted to an affair with a woman 30 years younger than him, after she accused him of physical abuse and attempting to choke her.

Ed Schrock, with a 92% approval rating from the Christian Coalition, had tapes of him soliciting for gay sex were circulated.

Donald "Buzz" Lukens was found guilty of having sex with a minor - a girl he was accused of sleeping with since she was 13.

Dan Burton while married, fathered a child by another woman.[106]

Dan Crane, Received a 100% "Morality Rating" from Christian Voice. Had sex with a minor working as a congressional page.[107]

Helen Chenowith in 1995 admitted to a six-year adulterous affair with a married associate.

Henry Hyde Judge who oversaw Clinton's impeachment proceedings had an extramarital affair with a woman who was married and had three children.

Mark Foley resigned after trying to solicit sex from male congressional pages via an instant messenger program.
While Democrats are not innocent, they are not hypocrites, and don't go around waving a white flag.

Commandment Number 8: “You shall not steal.

If passing 3 tax unpaid for cuts for rich, and starting 2 unpaid wars and dumping them in the next President's lap is stealing, what is?

Commandment Number 9: “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor.

Whoa, guess they did not get that memo either while trashing Mexicans, Latins, Blacks, and Muslims. I heard one Republican say "They are not my neighbors."
